It's also why Toranaga didn't stay in Yabushige's village for too long preferring to row back to the safety of his own Samurai aboard his ship. While Omi pulls his Toranaga's son's strings, Kiku pulls Omi's strings and who is behind it all? Toranaga of course. To ensure her loyalty, Kiku's courtesan contract was bought by Toranaga. Toranaga's son acting too early would not be a disadvantage to Toranaga if he is already prepared for war. It would still take the other regents 6 months after the last frost to prepare a response. That means Toranaga would have had to store weapons, food, and supplies at least a year before the cannon incident.
This part was not explained very well, but it wasn't just about a dick measuring contest. Omi is responsible for Yabushige while he's in his village. Someone jumping at his lord with swords could be countered with his usual samurai bodyguards. But a sudden pistol attack would be harder to contest. So for security reasons they did not want him to have guns near any important people. On the flip side, if he did give them up, he'd also never get it back. So keeping them in the house is the half compromise they did and only because his consort Fuji actually outranks Omi in terms of nobility, which is why he bothered to bow and respect the situation.
In the original novel & the 1980 adaptation, the "cannon tactic" scene was actually a gun training scene. This show replaced it with cannon tactic because it's not historically accurate in that period for the Japanese to unable to use guns. They've been using guns for 50 years in battles, so guns were already pretty common in that era. Even Japanese warrior monks at that time knew how to use guns. With cannons, British tactics was unheard of at that time (1600) because there were no English person in Japan before William Adams (the inspiration for Blackthorn character). Adams was the 1st English person ever stepping his foot in Japan. This is why I like this show. The showrunners make an effort to be as culturally & historically accurate as much as possible whilst still respecting the novel as the source material for the story.
Riffles was already main strategy even during Nobunaga's era. By the time Nobunaga unified (almost) the whole Japan, most samurai and their troops already mastered the use of guns. That's why Fuji, the granddaughter of famous samurai, know how to use it as well.

@@asadyousafzai937 Originally, during the Sengoku period, when a lord played a playful game with his vassals, he would give a gourd containing pieces to the victorious vassal. The vassals around him ridiculed him and said, ``It's a very stingy reward,'' but at the end of the game, the lord exchanged the gourd for a famous horse. From there, the term ``pieces from a gourd'' came to be used to refer to receiving an unexpected reward.
The Paper Walls, Tatami Mat Floors, Gravel and Moss Gardens are all to prevent assassinations, they make noise and are fragile to interact with. The Consort not sleeping is also to prevent assassinations, to keep watch until the Lord is actually asleep.
Wrong, Mariko explained why the houses are built with those materials. The gravel is put down so the moss can grow on it because moss is very important to the Japanese culture, that’s why the stone slabs are there, to walk on when the moss grows on the gravel. As far as the consort not sleeping, there are guards both inside and outside the property walls. Everything you said was factually false.
@@Sufferingzify No. Again, everything you say is wrong. You seem obsessed with reducing everything to assassinations and that sort of thing. That's not how real life works.
The actor for Omi really broke out a pretty killer expression there at the end, just the hint of a shit eating grin, buddy was playing Toranagas son right into doing exactly this, smart move
Not quite, Omi is far from little finger. Kiku who planted the idea into Omni’s head is Toranaga’s spy. So Omi influencing Toranaga’s son is actually Toranaga’s plan from the start. With this move, Toranaga get the result he want (forcing Ishido to move out from the safety of his territory to start a war), but also able to test whether his son is a kind of person that can get played or not.
36:35 What Blackthorne's sampling is called Natto. They're fermented Soybeans; very sticky and stinky, hence the comparison to "rotting cheese". It's considered a breakfast staple in Japan today.
I think making Blackthorne over-emotional was a creative choice so he looks like how he would look to the Japanese. Traditionally, Western shows about Japan just make the Japanese seem really stoic and opaque. Instead the Japanese seem normal in this show and Blackthorne looks rude and unstable. lol
The fact that you said you love black sails is an instant sub, then you busted the flush by saying you love prison break :D Fuji is my favorite character atm, I think she will not want to leave John after her 6 month obligation.
that's because this is only a mini-series, 1 season covers the entire original book, so after the first season they would not have anymore source material to work with, so it makes sense to only have one season. But I agree ti's sad, this show is so great, it would be great to have more seasons, but it would be hard for them to make more seasons when there are no more source materials to work with.
44:49 ChainShot! If you UA-cam “chainshot” there’s a mythbuster video of a chain being shot from a cannon and that one doesn’t even have two heavy balls on either side. Based on that video I’d imagine the Shogun scene is pretty accurate of a real ChainShot hitting a live horse and rider.
BTW - in the book while swimming everybody was naked.Women to because in the book Mariko was also swimming. Just sayin'. --- And Fuji is a bad ass! --- Excellent job of editing!
If you remember, the guard says "You are now a prisoner of Lord Kiyama", the christian lord that wears red, the one who sent the assassin and attacked Toronaga's group in the woods
Someone else explained that Lady Fuji's father is Lord Yoshii Torunaga's Right hand man, thus her place in the chain of Nobility is far above Lord Yabushige who is only a vassal Lord to one of Yoshi's lesser Bannerman. Thus explaining why Yabushige had to bow to her as she pointed the gun at him.
your are mostly right but it was omi san, who bow to fuji sama not yabushiga who is not a simple vassal to toranaga. Yabushiga is the lord of the province Izu. Omi is only the ruler of a small fisher village.
Natto are just fermented soy beans. Very popular food in Japan, even today. Most households make their children eat natto at a very young age, as it is very nutritive. Obviously, some Japanese do not like it, but others mix it with rice or raw eggs.
I hope that our boy Yabushige's luck changes soon. Aside from being obsessed about the nature of death. Yabushige's sensibility and rationales are most relatable for us in modern time.

Yea but in beggining i was thinking he is toronaga spy but now im wondering if he is a spy for christians being christian himself and the chick consort who said omi should be lord is maybe toranaga spy just my thoughts though.
@@kylegareau9238ohhh i never thought of it that way. And the shot where we saw the christian sending a pigeon and toranaga recieving it could be a mis direction as to who is the spy. Clever way of staging the scene. Love it.🤯🤩
@@Lord_Fenrir another reason i feel its her the guy that sends the pigeon he only sees anjin before yabushige(prolly spelled wrong) sees the anjin and the chick would have heard omi and yabu talking after yabu spared the anjin and toranaga says to mariko that the barbarian would could be real useful to him meaning he would have known the porteguese wanted him dead and the courtisan prolly relayed it to him, idk maybe i thinking to hard into it but just seems more plausible now that i think back on it.
@@kylegareau9238 no it actualy makes sense. Its really clever since in the books and 1980s version kiku and blackthorne actually meet i believe and it affects his relationship/rivalry with omi. yes it's all about social class and status and seniority, it's polite to address someone who has a higher social class and status or is senior to you as "sama", but it's disrespectful for someone to address someone of a lower status or junior as "sama". The gardener is just one of Blackthorne's workers, his staff are all beneath him in status, being the Hatamoto and the lord of his own house he cannot call his staff "sama".
I don't write with the intention of discriminating against people in the West. In the era of this story, people in Europe and the United States were sometimes seen in the same way as animals in Japan. At that time, Fuji was ordered to become the wife of a Portuguese, so it must have been very prepared.

Bushido, the code of conduct of a samurai, applies to women and men. Seppaku can only be performed by the elite. There are many ceremonies that are supposed to be performed precisely. You see many, many examples of highly ritualized movement here. Also Buddhism is important. There is obvious tension between Christian lords and traditional Buddhists. Pure Land Buddhism is presented but not discussed.
this episode was so good. this show so far has absolutely blown me away. its gotten compared to game of thrones a lot but to me it reminds me more of black sails.
What a great reaction and program. This episode begs the question, "What was Isido's men doing there in the first place?" Who inform Isido of the training? This was not, "I'm delivering a message and happen to stumble upon a training exercise of cannons". Remember Toranaga is a "master tactician and strategist". I believe the message was an excuse for the real reason. I, also, believe that Mariko was "sharing the pillow" with Blackthorn. Thank you for a wonderful reaction.
He’s the first and only sailor not to immediately find a wiring lady the minute He hits a port. Fiction is fun. I’d bet the farm he was so noble on the other side of the world with people He doesn’t know
Apologies to you all, but the summaries are not your strong point. The reactions are good and fun to watch, but if you’re going to summarize, be more prepared. I know the names are hard but, the storyline are being confused to a point that I just forward to the reaction.

To compare a consort in another book, Lady Jessica is Ledo's consort in Game of Thrones. Her son is the heir unlike if she was a prostitute. That would be a "bastard."
Regarding the sex scene - it's subtle - they agreed to send a courtesan (prostitute) to the Anjin - but what actually happened was She (I forget her name) went to Anjin instead (probably because she's attracted to him) but publicly the story is that a courtesan was sent to the Anjin - hence her need to keep up appearances; as it would be improper /conflict of interest if she was known to have slept with the Anjin. They don't do a great job of explaining this - as we aren't shown the conversation about sending the courtesan and also it isn't clear that she was the one to visit the anjin (as her face was obscured). Anyway, that's what I gathered from this scene.
Also, as part of polite society, Fuji was the consort; so Mariko cant very well admit that She slept with John behind Fuji’s back. But from her knowing look, id assume Fuji was aware of the “yobai”. And for his part, John quickly took the hint, did not pester her further, and just mentioned his appreciation for the “gift”. I guess in our modern world, we could just narrow it down to two words: plausible deniability.
If I remember correctly, I think in the book they actually do send a courtesan to him but it is dark and she's wearing Mariko's perfume. However, in the episode here, it is definitely Mariko, which makes sense.
lol, i was a Japanese restaurant once and I was curious about Natto, and the Japanese owner warned me it's strong (as in the smell and taste), like several times, so I didn't try it.
Did they fire Chain Shot at the end, two cannon ball's linked by a chain. These would not bounce on but they would bury in the mud. And looking at the muddy ground I am not even sure if a cannon ball would bounce. The only problem was the accuracy of the shot's, I am going to put that down to Blackthorne being a execellent teacher.
@@kylegareau9238I agree, maybe the show intentionally trying to misled us in thinking that the Old Christian man is Toronaga’s spy because of showing us a scene where the Old man sends a Pigeon with a message on it and Toranaga also receiving a Pigeon in Episode 1. I think the Old Man is actually sending the Pigeon to Kiyama the Christian Samurai Lord while the Pigeon Toranaga received was from Kiku.
Actually they didnt understand it wasnt the cannon that was better given that the cannons that were used in the demonstrations were 50 years old in the story bought from the portuguese and I believe and these are not English cannons, The Englishman used his maths and english naval cannon techniques to make the cannons work better in use. (Also his cannons are probably still in Edo city along with his men)
somebody made a comment that maybe the Portuguese gave them a worse demonstration on purpose so as to not show their hand. In the event of any conflict the Japanese would not be well prepared for the Massacre the cannons could cause
British cannons were just superior. Faster to reload, can be fired from a greater distance and far more accurate than anything the Spanish could field. Partly why the Brits won, often, against the Spanish Armadas. Spanish tried to offset it with simply having three times the amount of cannons the English had - But to no avail. During that time period the English were unbeatable at Sea.

We saw him sending letters on the birds in episode 1
He’s a spyyyyy!
@@TerryBernardino Moss is slippery, and gravel makes a sound when tread upon. The Consort not sleeping before their Lord is for actual protection.

He is the little finger of this show
Not quite, Omi is far from little finger.
Most people don't eat natto for breakfast anynore in Japan. They eat miso soup, onigiri, omurice, or sandwich. Natto now is more of a delicacy.

I think making Blackthorne over-emotional was a creative choice so he looks like how he would look to the Japanese. It's sad to know this show will only have 1 season. Let's hope it will keep the greatness till the end.
I didn't know this :(
that's because this is only a mini-series, 1 season covers the entire original book, so after the first season they would not have anymore source material to work with, so it makes sense to only have one season. But I agree ti's sad, this show is so great, it would be great to have more seasons, but it would be hard for them to make more seasons when there are no more source materials to work with.
also this show is FANTASTIC
I'm so happy your Channel is more successful now. 😊 Love from Assam, India 🇮🇳♥️🌺💚💚💚

ChainShot!
He can afford it since Kiyama is a business christian.
Hiromatsu is her grandfather.
Natto are just fermented soy beans. Very popular food in Japan, even today. Most households make their children eat natto at a very young age, as it is very nutritive. Obviously, some Japanese do not like it, but others mix it with rice or raw eggs.
It smells awful but it doesn’t have much of a taste, though it’s good with rice.
Its actually great with kewpie mayo
The convenience store natto maki is damn tasty!
Very true, it's one of the most healthy foods on the planet, as it takes calcium from the arteries and puts it in the bones.
I hope that our boy Yabushige's luck changes soon. Aside from being obsessed about the nature of death. Yabushige's sensibility and rationales are most relatable for us in modern time.
I just love the actors expressions, he really nails it.

He is a spy, it shows on episode 1 while Rodriguez was explaining the three hearts to John.
The writing and directing was really well done. Misdirection and telling whats happening without saying who.

17:42 Not using "sama" for the gardener is a highborn-lowborn thing. Like you wouldn't call someone a Lord unless they were a Lord.
yes it's all about social class and status and seniority, it's polite to address someone who has a higher social class and status or is senior to you as "sama", but it's disrespectful for someone to address someone of a lower status or junior as "sama".

Yes, it has sex scene
@@gtavgamer670what a weird response. I take it you didn’t like it, and so you figure those who did like it had superficial reasons? Seems a little short sighted.. if I reading correctly, of course. Maybe you actually really just like sex scenes

I like the fact they went back to old school romance scenes like in Troy, not over the top or grotesque
He said there was 2 Christian lords, Ishido, the leper and one other guy. They seem to forget Toranaga is the “one other guy” 😂
@@TerryBernardino 4:08 nope, there were 5 in total including Toranaga and four were present in the meeting: Ishido, lepresy guy and lord kiyama(both christians) and that other dude that didn't really say anything and was just looking around. I do like you guys reaction, specially that dude in the end, he sounds badass
To compare a consort in another book, Lady Jessica is Ledo's consort in Game of Thrones. Her son is the heir unlike if she was a prostitute. That would be a "bastard."
Comparing Shogun wirh GOT is like calling Michael Jordan the new LeBron James of Basketball.
Y es
Sama means sir.
San means Mr. or Mrs.
The guy you refer too as a spy is in fact the informant to Daimyo Toranaga, you see him sending a pigeon in Ep 2 or 3.
You mean Mariko?
Also, as part of polite society, Fuji was the consort; so Mariko cant very well admit that She slept with John behind Fuji’s back. But from her knowing look, id assume Fuji was aware of the “yobai”. And for his part, John quickly took the hint, did not pester her further, and just mentioned his appreciation for the “gift”.
I guess in our modern world, we could just narrow it down to two words: plausible deniability.
@@P.Whitestrake Yes I believe so thanks 👍
If I remember correctly, I think in the book they actually do send a courtesan to him but it is dark and she's wearing Mariko's perfume. However, in the episode here, it is definitely Mariko, which makes sense.

natto is simply fermented beans
lol, i was a Japanese restaurant once and I was curious about Natto, and the Japanese owner warned me it's strong (as in the smell and taste), like several times, so I didn't try it.

During that time period the English were unbeatable at Sea.

the fact that the show has fuji and blackthorn show more of a love connection then the real love interest in mariko is very concerning but then again the actress that plays fuji sama should of been mariko and the other actress that plays mariko should of never been hired in the first place. the only reason they got her is cause she's a looker. other than that shes playing the charecter of mariko all wrong. the book and the 80s tv series were so much better with the role of mariko then this show is doing right now.
I don’t get a love connection between Fuji Sama and John at all. Just politeness and trying to be respectful. Mariko and John having romantic feelings has been pretty clear to me
@@MarieS610 we all know that he is suppose to have this love connection with mariko. it's just doesn't feel like those two are even the bit most connected in that way. you feel that more so with fuji then mariko but who knows maybe over time the actress that plays mariko will figure out how the character from the book and tv show acted. plus given how much more screen time mariko has had with blackthorn vs fuji. still a great show just not sold one bit on the actress that plays mariko. she has the same acting style from Pachinko and brought it over to this show.
I feel the same way. I thought that they would break down Fuji's so called "eight fold fence" bit by bit over time and eventually She will come to care for him(maybe not necessarily romantically), not by duty alone but due to her own feelings towards him.
