  • A BBC news report on the return of HMS Hermes from the Falkland Islands (1982)
Off air recording made onto Philips Video 2000 format tape, hence dodgy playback (compared to VHS) when copied to DVD after 28 years (in 2010, and now finally uploaded in 2017) - the recorder still played back, even if some tapes have deteriorated a bit.

But now I hear that they are doing there best to save her from scrap, and preserve her in liverpool, we can only hope and wait.

@@damionord9142 why will they be commanded by the US, then? I thought we were just a customer buying the jets. They have more than enough carrier strike groups of their own...the issue is that these carriers need a lot of planes to operate at optimal capacity and make sense (plus more in reserve) and our government is dragging its feet on ordering them. It makes me wonder why they even bothered paying for a pair of giant carriers if they can't afford the planes...maybe should have just ordered one and saved the cash to pay for planes + investing in destroyers for a protective surface fleet. Outside of US planes, I don't know what else we'd operate anyway? Typhoons and Tornados are really old now, and the proposed Tempest project is years off.

Almost 40 years later and there is immense pride in my chest. I wonder, if something like that ever happened again, would we ALL get behind the effort? I suspect not… and THAT is the real tragedy.
Make patriotism different from racism… it’s makes no sense. And re introduce OUR National Anthem to our schools and media ASAP.

It's sad that it takes war to unite the people and the country. Why can t we do the same in peacetime?. And Margaret Thatcher talks about pride when she almost wiped the Royal Navy clean off ships.Never ,never, never trust or believe any politician they are all the same. I am proud of our armed forces unfortunately they are always tasked and rearly properly kitted out for the task at hand, more so to be proud of them.
