Falklands 40: Returning Home

- 2022 marks 40 years since Argentine and British troops fought to gain control over the Islas Malvinas or Falkland Islands. The ten-week conflict started on 2 April 1982 and ended on 14 June when Argentina surrendered.
In April 2022, 10 Falklands veterans came to Fort Nelson and shared their stories with us. We spoke about their time in combat and the return home. Some sailed into Portsmouth and were greeted by tens of thousands, others had smaller welcome parties. All told fascinating and moving stories, some of which can be seen as part of the exhibition and some are told in this video.
From 25 May, there will be an exhibition at Fort Nelson to mark the 40th anniversary of the Falklands War. This exhibition depicts Portsmouth during the war from the point of view of the local Portsmouth newspaper, The News and features moving stories from Falklands war veterans.

What a team !
If any Veteran reads this, you got a hero's welcome, because even if you didn't believe that you were heroes, the British people did. You had liberated British citizens from an occupier, so you deserved to be welcomed home as heros.
I've never served, but a sincere thank you to all who risked everything in the carrying out of your duty on that all but barren rock in the middle of nowhere.

There’s a good documentary from Timeline that shows both perspectives and interviews taken a few years after the war. There was no glory in the war, only horror and tragedy. At least they got home
yeah i mean Argentina and UK were just killing eachother for a piece of rock. i'm from Argentina and i really don't care about the war i don't care about that island. i think is more important my own country. But leaving that aside i think the horrors of war is what we should care about

This reminds me of the part in "Helmet For My Pillow," where they are finally relieved and the emaciated men are helped up the cargo netting onto the ships. Leckie describes asking a sailor if anybody even knew they were on Guadalcanal, and he is told that they are considered heroes. The troops had no idea anybody had even heard of the battle.

Yeah but they still haven't learned a damn thing. And they're having to suck up to the PRC to try and fix their economy.
Argentinian here, new generations understand the war like an attempt to hide the economic and social problems Argentina was going through.
And we are less fanaticized with the isles, we need to think about our mainland which is in crisis.
Hopefully when our country recovers we can make an agreement that benefits both countries 🤝🕊️

It was retaking an island that had over 1,000 British citizens on it, it was not native people under subjugation. I guess it's colonial, but it was an empty island when taken except for first generation whalers that lived there and were allowed to live there after it became a British terrority
