I went to Argentina about 10 years after the war and travelled all over the country. I found the Argentina people very friendly and hospitable and went to the memorial to the Argentine dead which was very sad and it all seemed to be very futile. The war had to be fought but it should never have happened at all.

Thanks for putting this up Rod. I was there with my father welcoming my brother home. He will tell you he is not a hero but for me he was. Not because he was fighting a war to protect Maggie's re-election but purely because he survived and came home. He was and still is sad because of those that never got to go home to their families. Both British & Argentinian.

@Justin Time , you are quite right but if his brother fought there he's allowed to criticise any politician he likes.
Roderick Macdonald often points out in his lectures that the war led to the collapse of the Argentinian dictatorship which had killed 30,000 of its own citizens. For which thy received no thanks (from the Argentinians).

@Justin Time On June 10, 1770, the then Governor of Buenos Aires, Francisco de Paula Bucarelli, ordered the eviction of the British occupants of the Falkland Islands, which at that time were considered as crucial territory for the control of the inter-oceanic passage between the Atlantic and Pacific and the southernmost areas of the planet.
The importance of the Falklands had already been highlighted by George Anson, the first lord of the British Admiralty when he pointed out that "This island must handle the ports and commerce of Chile, Peru, Panama, Acapulco and, in a word, all the Spanish territory in that sea. It will make all our expeditions to these parts more lucrative for us and more fatal for Spain."

Roderick Macdonald Hi Roderick, I have just watched your video hosted on another channel ua-cam.com/video/vh5Z6MgxTsk/v-deo.html - I added a comment thinking it was directed to your channel (in error) so I will post here -
      Roderick
Thank you for posting this. I enjoyed it and could have handled another hour!
Absolutely loved the Lancelot episode and expect you have dined out on that one a few times.
I was 'involved' serving as an engineer on a carrier (the one that the Argentinians claimed to have sunk), so while busy most of the time - had some time to think. As mere engineers we could just not understand the logic of the South Georgia and Goose Green Ops at the time - the only upside I suppose was neutralising Sante Fe (Sub) - but that was mere happen stance. They may have also created fear, uncertainty and doubt for Menendez.
Just one very minor point so you can amend your speaking notes - at 29:30 Antelope 21 Frigate (not 42).
I think I have caught up with all your output to You Tube - anymore?😀

    • @RoderickMacdonald
      @RoderickMacdonald 6 років тому +3

Thank you so much for your helpful comments Norman. You are so right about dear Antelope our escort F21 Frigate. I met up recently with a retired Argentine Brigadier General who was a commando on the Falklands/Malvinas. He confirmed the neither South Georgia or Goose Green made any difference to them. As long as they controlled Stanley they controlled negotiations for the Islands. He said they were worried by two events. Firstly when we landed and secondly when they realized we had built an airfield and had harriers ashore. Congratulations on your service as an engineer on board ship. There are no "mere" engineers, just essential and brave ones. Thank you. If you want to watch more you can go to corecorporateconsulting.com/government-services/ which covers most of what has been published on different events. Thank you again Norman.

And don't accuse the falklanders of not being indigenous or the British generally of being imperialist since Argentines themselves are not indigenous to Argentina since they're all of European origin (only the native indians are indiginous to Argentina) and the Argentine nation itself exists only as a result of Spanish imperialism.

It's hard to think of a more foolish decision than to fight men like that, who were ultimately backed by politicians.
