There is a great interview with Ian where he talks about playing with Leland Sklar. "He's like a rock, he just holds it for you. If you slip and push it a bit he gives you this look and its Oh, I've been a bad boy." 🤣
This was the first album that introduced me to the music of deep purple back in 76. Now in 2022 I'm.60. I've seen deep purple live twice in new Zealand
Live from Made In Japan is my favourite live song from any band.If you listen to that you will not believe what you are listening,Lord was 200 years ahead of his time!
Many car speakers were blown by this song, if my experience is any meter. But truly, Salvo, the live album _Made In Japan_ elevates the studio performances into something transcendental; you need to treat your head to some Deep Purple live cuts.
The 'screech effect' during the drum breakdown is Jon Lord shaking and manhandling the Hammond organ, or 'The Beast' as he affectionately referred to it at times.
One of the best albums ever by one of my top 10 favorite bands of all time! Their 4 studio albums from that era are classics that are worth full reactions. Also, the best thing they ever did was the amazing Live In Japan double album, try Highway Star from it, even better than the original! Enjoy. 🎵🎸🎤🎹🎶
The scratching you are hearing is Jon Lord on the Hammond Organ... It's very short, sharp stabs at the keyboard making that noise... I've seen him do it live.. (Yes I am a very old git) Keep on rocking.
Yep, it's clear now! You are officially a member of the Deep Purple family. Welcome, my friend! 🤘😁 PS - I agree that this song gets so overlooked. I've linked to two more that don't get enough attention, in my opinion. Stormbringer (1974) - ua-cam.com/video/4C2K889u_90/v-deo.html Speed King (1970) - ua-cam.com/video/lIHh1T3SQyE/v-deo.html
STORM BRINGER by Deep Purple 1974 with White Snakes lead singer new to the band this song starts out with synthesizers sounds and it's pretty awesome through out the whole song recommended too
Oh my lawd!! I needed something to get moving this morning lol. Enjoyed this one, and this entire album is great. Next up try "Lazy" from this same album.
Remember this album next time you’re looking for an album to review. No excuses! ✌️ No one else has figured out how good or important this one is so go ahead there’s only six more tracks 🔥
Last time i saw Deep Purplev was in 1999 or 2000 can t remember for sure ! but it was in Montreal at Bell center and it was a 2 bands night ! ELP and Deep Purpe on 2nd ! !
I was 10 in 72. This machine head album was my first record purchase with my chores and working in the vineyard money. It rocked. The whole album is wicked. The 2012 cleaned up version doesnt do it justice. My parents immediately brought me home some headphones.
DEFINITELYYYYYY IN THE TOP 50 ROCK ALBUMS OF ALLLLLLLLLLL TIME SALVO, NO QUESTION!!! 😊YOU SHOULD JUST DO THE ALBUM, JUST 7 TRACKS, ABOUT 40 MINS. AND IT'S THE 50TH ANNIVERSARY OF IT, AMAAAZINGGGGG MAN! 😊 ENJOYYYYYY THIS SALVO . YEAH IN ORDER THE HOLY TRINITY OF HARD ROCK METAL : DEEP PURPLE, LED ZEPPELIN AND BLACK SABBATH, SABBATH BEING MY FAVORITE AND THEN PURPLE 😊, CAN TAKE OR LEAVE ZEPPELIN, DON'T CARE TOO MUCH!
Great stuff! Cruising town Friday nights in the 1970s with Space Truckin blaring. Brings back great memories! Im 61 but still just played this on my drums for my grandkids and it blew them away! Gotta give them great music experiences and Deep Purple has it in spades! Thanks for the reaction! Yours was mine 50 years ago! LOL!
The intro riff is played by Jon on the Hammond (run thru Marshall amps). The riff as Ritchie described it was originally a thumb exercise. That effect/sound during Paice's drumming is Jon on the Hammond. Paice puts on a drumming clinic. Yes, it is very heavy because Jon, Ritchie and Roger were all playing the riff, just piling it on.
Was seeing flyers up in Paris advertising their upcoming concert in '75. Was bummed that it wasn't part of our school group's Easter recess trip itinerary
Woman from Tokyo - DEEP PURPLE one of their signature Rockin' songs of 1973 full of great drums guitar 🎸 riffs and Hammond organ keyboards and the lead singers super creative voice. Recommend it
All you need is Space, a heavy duty truck, a pair of dice for the rear view mirror and this song. Oh, I forgot something. You can crank the volume up all the way in space since no one will hear it except you!
the pair of dice, lol! I'm flashing now on all the cool-ass painted/muraled vans I saw in the 70's as a kid, lol. By the time I got my license that "fad" had passed!
"Gotta do this live" Yea, first the live version from 'Made in Japan', and then if you are ready to take it even further than that, even though it is the next evolution of the band, check out the video from the California Jam and check out Part 2 of Space Truckin through the end of their set. I'll just say this about that: There was no encore because they had to get in a helicopter and get out of town because the local authorities were on their way to arrest them. An absolutely legendary metal/hard rock performance.
I know the cartoonist R. Crumb had that long-legged dude striding down the road and the caption was "Keep on Truckin' " I think...not sure when that woulda been tho, if he was inventing or reflecting...
I remember hearing this song for the first time in college, and I thought they were talking about the bars in Dallas instead of the Borealis. It's my favorite Deep Purple song, and the words have been corrected in my mind, but the amazing sound starts off with John Lord's Hammond C3 blasting through the Marshall Stax speakers. That's the hyper deep; metal sound you hear. Imagine a Hammond C3 producing a metal sound, but that's John Lord for you, perhaps the greatest rock n roll keyboard player.
Hi my new friend, that effect is Blackmore on guitar, better example is Flight of the Rat, so the live is crazier we all have to suggest Space Truckin from Made in Japan, about 19 minutes, but for the fun of the video why dont you react to Part II of Space Trucin from the Cal Jam you never seen anything like it, major damages. Also SPACE TRUCKIN' is the LAST THING THE CREW OF THE CHALLENGER HEARD before it crashed, memorialized later in CONTACT LOST on a later album
Watch the version from Live in Denmark which was filmed by Danish TV Its b& w . The bass is very high in the mix and you lines across the screen caused by the high volume but see can see Mr Blackmore play has guitar with feet .
This has been a favorite of mine since I first heard it when I was about 11 or 12. A great song to end a great album. The worst track on Machine Head was Smoke on the Water IMO and it was the the biggest hit they ever had. When a Blind Man Cries would be a very nice change of pace. My favorite live track from Purple is Mandrake Root ua-cam.com/video/uOzUkkofOfY/v-deo.html
5:00 "What is that effect" - that's the sound of a pick scraped over guitar strings lengthwise. I'd dare to guess it's been sampled and played on loop in the studio recording because it's so consistent, but I wouldn't be surprised if Ritchie was able to make it that consistent in live performances either.
I disagree, it's more likely a sound from the organ. If you listen and watch performances from around this time with the band, Jon Lord does many similar sounds when creating rhythmic ambient backing for a guitar solo or a groove together with the drums.
If you thought this was cool , wait until you check out the live version from the album MADE IN JAPAN !! It's 18 minutes long , but well worth it !! The organ will blow your mind !!!
Cool to see you get straight into the funk from the get-go! DP's "HUSH" also has a bad-ass riff from the start, funky as hell. Ian Paice just kills the drums thruout this classic tune! Not sure if you've done "Kentucky Woman" or, while I'm on the theme, "My Woman From Tokyo," but those are both fire, featuring extremely cool keyboard moments, both organ and piano. You were so right to blurt out "We're gonna do this one live!" and, as you've likely heard, the "Made in Japan" album version of this song is superb!
On the back of smoke on the water album rat bat blue no one does it cause it's so long but if you want to hear them just go every where to long for this but do give it a spin.
If you could listen to Machine Head while driving down the highway without breaking the speed limit, you're a better girl than I. The entire album is fire.
More references here to headphones. Why are people so sold on headphones ? Havent you ever heard quality SPEAKERS powered by a quality amp? No headphones have ever thumped me in the gut or filled my body with sound starting at my feet. Even the best earphones only give you less than 80 % of the dynamics. They are not even suitable for quality classical music ..... except classical guitar. But add an orchestra to a classical guitar and it too needs a complete sound that only quality speakers can give.
This whole album is awesome from start to finish.
It turned into a greatest hits album, not a bad song on it
One of the first albums I ever bought. So good.
I think the "Made In Japan" album is better overall.
Ian's drumming carries the song, his timing is flawless!!
Saw them in 1984 at western springs Auckland . They opened with Space Trucken .
Everytime you hear a sound you never heard before on a Purple record it's always Jon Lords Hammond.
Well said!
Live from Made In Japan is my favourite live song from any band.If you listen to that you will not believe what you are listening,Lord was 200 years ahead of his time!
Paice on fire
My favorite song on this album is "Lazy", a great song. I loved this album.
Many car speakers were blown by this song, if my experience is any meter. But truly, Salvo, the live album _Made In Japan_ elevates the studio performances into something transcendental; you need to treat your head to some Deep Purple live cuts.
and headphones
If you want an eargasm then listen to Lazy off the same album.
YES! I rec'd some songs in my comment just now, but forgot Lazy, dammit! Sweeeet song! Studio or live from...wait for it--"Made in Japan"!
Ian Paice is ridiculous ❤
That scratching sound during the drum solo, is Jon Lord comping on the organ.
You need to do a track by track of this entire album!! 💜🎸🎤
If you didn't own this album in the 70s you were square. Brilliant tune.
Best song on Machine Head is Lazy. Give it a listen. You wanna hear anything live listen to Made in Japan.
The 'screech effect' during the drum breakdown is Jon Lord shaking and manhandling the Hammond organ, or 'The Beast' as he affectionately referred to it at times.

This song was born the same year I was! Thanks for this reaction. I love these guys
The whole album is great!
It’s the cow bell..and this song live from made in Japan is almost 20 minutes long it will blow you away.
Yep, it's clear now! You are officially a member of the Deep Purple family. Welcome, my friend! 🤘😁

There's a live version on the Made in Japan album
STORM BRINGER by Deep Purple 1974 with White Snakes lead singer new to the band this song starts out with synthesizers sounds and it's pretty awesome through out the whole song recommended too
Do space truckin live from the made in japan album. It's 20 mins long. All deep purple should be live
Thanks for doing this one, As a child, one of my older brothers listened to Deep Purple and this song was my first experience of great Rock!
Oh my lawd!! I needed something to get moving this morning lol. Enjoyed this one, and this entire album is great. Next up try "Lazy" from this same album.
This song always reminded me of The Doors' "Hello, I Love You." Deep Purple was so good.
Remember this album next time you’re looking for an album to review. No excuses! ✌️ No one else has figured
out how good or important this one is so go ahead there’s only six more tracks 🔥
I know this is on Made In Japan, Im sure its on a ton of their other live shows too.
There was some good early Deep Purple too. Not as heavy metal but good songs. Try "Hush" or "Kentucky Woman".
Last time i saw Deep Purplev was in 1999 or 2000 can t remember for sure ! but it was in Montreal at Bell center and it was a 2 bands night ! ELP and Deep Purpe on 2nd ! !

Anything from made in Japan is superb
Live made in Japan!! A must, Great reaction!

If you do a live version, do the one from the live album Made In Japan, all the live versions are best from Made In Japan. It has no video though.
Incredible album.
I agree with the reviewer. This maybe be fav recurring riff ever
All you need is Space, a heavy duty truck, a pair of dice for the rear view mirror and this song. Oh, I forgot something. You can crank the volume up all the way in space since no one will hear it except you!

Nice choice. Love this song. Great reaction.
DEEP PURPLE MAESTROS FUNDADORES DEL HEAVY E HARD ROCK 🎸 A 🤘🏻🤘🏻🤘🏻

Double-live album "Made in Japan" is one to check at your leisure Salvo.
Wait until you listen to the live version from the made in Japan of space truckin
One of the greatest riffs I've ever heard- great reaction!
Who started the “Truckin” thing?. Was it the Grateful Dead song Truckin or was there something earlier.?
I know the cartoonist R. Crumb had that long-legged dude striding down the road and the caption was "Keep on Truckin' " I think...not sure when that woulda been tho, if he was inventing or reflecting...
Awesome reaction Dude 😎
One of the ten best albums of all time. Yea I said it
Awe man! Wish you had done the live version from the live album Made in Japan !
Machine head and deep purple in rock are 2 awesome albums. They kick ass from start to finsh.
I remember hearing this song for the first time in college, and I thought they were talking about the bars in Dallas instead of the Borealis. the effect is made by Jon on the organ. You can hear him do similar sounds alot live from around this period.
I like particularly the MADE IN JAPAN live album - this track has been wildly expanded and add much to the studio version.
I recommend it.
Now review the movie "Space Truckers" with Dennis Hopper!!!
bought this when it first came out, if I look to the right, there it is on the shelf
💜💜💜thanks for this -Ive got my old vinyls out- to get the original effect
THIS WAS FROM THE 40TH ANNIVERSARY, NOT THE ORIGINAL 72 ALBUM 😊, THIS WAS OFF OF THE 2012 RECORDING
No it's the same recording as on the original album. There is a slight difference in mix and mastering though.
Watch the version from Live in Denmark which was filmed by Danish TV Its b& w . The bass is very high in the mix and you lines across the screen caused by the high volume but see can see Mr Blackmore play has guitar with feet .
That jams!

That Ritchie Blackmore 👌🏽👌🏽♥️😁
💜same here and I them in Birmingham, UK they were awesome!

When the deep purple falls...The scratching sound was probably the guitar. Live in Japan.
If you thought this was cool , wait until you check out the live version from the album MADE IN JAPAN !! It's 18 minutes long , but well worth it !! The organ will blow your mind !!!
WOOHOO! love them!😁
Ouch. My ear drums popped🤘❤️
'knocking on your backdoor'.
This is where obituary started
You had to if heard smoke on the water🤘❤️ by these cats
i heard they were going to do some shows with BOC aloha

The screech is guitar. Ian Gillan did the part of Jesus in the original version of the Rock opera Jesus Christ Superstar.

Roger glovers bass
Wait until you get to the live version on Made in Japan --- :)
More balls than any of the bands going around these days.....
Live version, select Made in Japan, twenty minutes and two seconds. :)
Clutch Spacegrass. Check it out
One word..... Lazy...... same album
Check out.
Space trucken live Japan.....
You may not survive the live Space Truckin' done in NY 1973. You have been warned.
This has got to be an altenative take, not the original album take. Try to take alisten to the same track on Made in Japan Live.
Big mistake not listening to the live Made In Japan version, which is much better.
I was born 15 y to late...

DO NOT do a live version. Just saying.
Oh hell yes! 🫵 Come on
