Hands down best Deep Purple song ever. Saw em several times starting in 73. Never seen this version. You should check out the Made in Japan version. The studio is nice. It's what hooked me 50 years ago.
Just saw Deep Purple last week for the first time. Still performing with Ian Paice, Ian Gillan, and Roger Glover. They did this song, most of the classics and some newer things. They have Don Airey on keyboards since 2002 but still featuring the Hammond, and a brand new guitarist Simon McBride since 2022. They were older and Ian can't scream like he did 50 years ago (imagine that) he's still great. Don't know why I didn't catch them back then like I did Black Sabbath and Led Zeppelin, but glad I finally completed the set. Great response. Back then I was more into studio mixes, but have grown to love the extras that come with jams during live performances. Like you indicated, both are worth a listen.
Ritchie Blackmore is one of my favorite guitarists of all time. Ian Paice is one of my favorite drummers and John Lord on the organ!!! My favorite band of all time.
We went to see DP in Chicago in the early 70’s, Ian Gillan was sick and couldn’t perform. Refund was offered, but the rest of the band would play. That concert is still one of my favs!!
I worked as a stagehand when Alvin Lee and 10 years later played an arena around here, 10 years after was the 2nd concert I ever went to. Van Morrison was the opening act. He got booed off the stage lol. Next came the MC5 and they rocked the place ending with my love is like a rambling rose. 10 years after then opened up with hello little schoolgirl :) They did going home for the encore and had everyone on their feet. Hell half the people were standing on their seats the place went totally crazy This is like in 1968
Check out Strange Kind Of Woman from the same concert, this version is not much different from the Made In Japan version, which has a more decent sound, but live footage compensates. After all, the concert in Copenhagen (in Scandinavia) took place on March 1st, 1972, when Machine Head had not yet been released (will be released only on March 25th) and was only the second performance on the tour and the group was just working out their chips.
If your a person starting drums you can't go wrong with Ian his chops will take you to all the different music like jass blues rock swing etc there all there if you pay attention one of the greats .absolutely 👍
Most of Deep Purple's live shows are just jam sessions. Some of their live songs are over 20 minutes long when the album version is only 4-5 minutes. Amazing group definitely a must watch.
the beauty of a DP concert in the 70's was they never played the songs the same night by night...you never knew if you were going sit through a 3 minute or a 30 minute song...I was lucky enough to see them a few times....
Oh yes dude. Thank you so much for reacting to this brilliant track from the brilliant Deep Purple. One of my most favourite bands. As some of our friends have mentioned...check out Made in Japan... awesome. I was 11in 1968 when I first bought a DP album and I have been hooked ever since. Looking forward to your next reaction. Peace from Liverpool UK 👍✌️🤘☮️
Although there is no video of the recording of the Made in Japan album, without a doubt they are the best versions, do not miss any, your head will explode
“Strange Kind or Woman” from this same show PLEASE!! 🔥🎤🎸 There is a “Call & Response” section between Ian Gillan & guitarist Ritchie Blackmore that’s insane!!! You won’t be sorry ♥️🔥
Didn’t get to see them until the reformed the MK2 and played Knebworth 1985. Poured with rain all day and mud everywhere, one of the best bands ever. A lot of us old school rock fans have found a new love in Band Maid you should check them out they are the real deal.
It is too bad there is not a video version of the Made in Japan album, because this one is like band practice for the perfect sound of that one which is the best!
I like Lazy, especially the Jimmy Barnes and Joe Bonamassa cover. For Deep Purple at their best it is the 1970 live BBC TV performance of Sweet Child in Time and the Made in Japan live Speed King. Also recommend the video of Ian Gillan doing When a Blind Man Cries..... Ian as a solo artist with a brilliant backing band.
British bands would often do short tours to Scandinavia…usually Denmark and Sweden….as it is an area easy to get to from England and they could work out any up issues before a tour to the US.
Salvo, 2 suggestions, first, hear the album version...from Machine Head album, then check out Joe Bonamassa and Jimmy Barnes paying props! Will blow yer mind bro! Great react!
You gotta hear the album version from the Machinehead album, its legendary and blues jam perfection - live is good too but after you hear the album version youll see what im talking about
Never a complaint with Deep Purple. So many great jam bands to explore. This riff is so great to 'expand' and groove on. Nice key change too. These guys could even swing. Speaking of forgetting......Don't give up on Genesis. You have not really played anything 'serious' from them and in particular from the '70s. Do be warned: Genesis is not a 'blues band'. They intentionally avoided that genre; perhaps because SO many bands of the era were deeply blues oriented. 'The Cinema Show' might be a good one to try. Interesting vocals, keys and drums.
Sal……I don’t know how to break this to you, but if you think Scandinavia refers to Canada……..then…….there are some serious gaps……😏. A globe would be helpful. 😉
Deep Purple are a live band every performance is original no two performances are the same. The album version is a nearly version of the song. Listen to the Live in Japan which is 3 consecutive concerts in Japan . The best permanent were released as Made in Japan.
Yeah, you should have reacted to the studio version. Also, just a thought ... you really don't need to warn us about the possibility of videos being blocked, because if they are, we won't see them. Just something you might consider. Except for SOME of Deep purple's live performances, like Child In Time, they are almost ALWAYS better in the studio than live. The live performances you normally see that ARE good, are usually the studio version synced with the live video. I will just suggest to you, and I know that sometimes it's easier OR more exciting to do the live versions but, there are very few bands that do it as good or better live than in the studio, and if you've never heard how they originally meant for the song to sound, and you don't ever hear them in the studio, you really don't know the band at all. Some live recordings will make you dislike bands that are otherwise great, and it may just be that you heard a lousy live version, not their best.
no, mostly the studio versions are good but the live versions are way way better, at least live in the 70s. I guess it's a matter of opinion and taste maybe but I prefer the rawness and jamming of the live situation with this band. Many other bands I very much prefer the studio version though...
@@michaelkarlsson5966 I can definitely see and appreciate that. For live though, I prefer groups like The Allman Brothers Band (Fillmore East and Eat A Peach), Bruce Springsteen, some Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, AC/DC, Eagles, Journey, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Alice Cooper and Stevie Ray Vaughan, to name a few. What I miss in DP's live stuff is the killer solos by Richie Blackmore and John Lord from the studio versions. I don't mind them noodling around, but to me, they never match the awesome beauty of the original ones (IMHO, of course). But, to each his own, right👍😎😊 ???
I highly recommend Deep Purple's live album titled Made in Japan. ! You must check it out ! One of the two of three greatest live rock albums ever !
Dont I know you from John Slops :)
@@robertkern9911 Probably
@@robertkern9911 By the way:. What happened to John ? He hasn't done a live cast for 4 days now.
I agree, but, for me, Machine Head is THE one...
@@alansmith7626 Almost everything on Machine Head is on Made in Japan....and it's even better live. Especially Space Truckin.
This was one of your best reactions. This is how I remember rock being, as long, jammy and loud af. No “hurry up and get to the chorus” in those days.
The album version is perfection.
Yep
Hands down best Deep Purple song ever. Saw em several times starting in 73. Never seen this version. You should check out the Made in Japan version. The studio is nice. It's what hooked me 50 years ago.
Not for me, one of my least favourite. I prefer Burn, Stormbringer, Highway Star
STUDIO
have you heard Joe Bonamassa and Jimmy Barnes do this tune? Is so Amazing to me, they really did the tune justice!
@@alansmith7626 Jimmy is a legend here in Australia and Joe a fantastic guitarist
Five of the greatest rock performers of all time, each a master of their instrument!!!
Yes !! Definitely react to the studio version.

Oh, did you hear Glover sing the Gillan repertoire? Tell me, please. 🙏
Saw them in Hershey Pa. In Nov. 1972 Machine Head Tour.
What can one say about this god of a rock band, 50 yrs they have been in my life, ❤🙏
So many Bands of that time had extraordinarily talented musicians.
they played at K.B hallen in Copenhagen Debmark
Finally glad you did this reaction. This was great.
Another excellent rock jam is Ten Years After, "I'm Going Home," at Woodstock, EPIC!

10 million percent pure and absolute talent
One of my favorite DP songs!
Been lovin this one for 5 decades. Still kicks serious ass. The band line-up is absolutely stellar.
El Rock de los 70 lo mejor Zeppelin purple Floyd Emerson etc
Made in Japan is the best live from deep purple
I recently learned that John Lord ran his B-3 through a stack of Marshalls. Amazing!

My fav from them by far
To see Ian Paice play a killer drum solo the song to go to is THE MULE from the MADE IN JAPAN abum.
Or Live In Copenhagen 😊
This whole album is fire. Everybody was great at what they did.
You should listen to Flight of the Rat from Deep Purple in Rock album.
Everybody is watching Richie and no-one realises they are listening to Ian Paige throughout the entire song...

Blues rock done to perfection!
Joe Bonomassa and Jim Barnes do a great cover of this
There is no harmonica.
Just for the record, it`s from Copenhagen Denmark and was showed in the danish television (Danmarks Radio) a week after

If you're lazy... There's no place for you in this band... :p
Ian Paice has been Purple's only drummer, from 1968 to the present (yes they're still recording). Why tamper with perfection?
Ian Paice doesn't get the recognition he deserves.

alwayS do the ORIGINAL FIRST JUST LIKE STAIRWAY TO HEAVEN THEN DO THE LIVE THE ORIGINAL IS LEGENDARY TJE AUTHENTIC ORIGINAL THAT MADE IT FAMOUS
Scandinavia is Norway, Denmark, Sweden and Finland.... Vikings!
Nope, not Finland.
Finland is a Nordic country in Northern Europe. Subtle difference.
not so many vikings though! Haha! More than 1000 years since those times! ;)
Finland is a Fenno-Scandinavian country, not a Scandinavian one.
