I was fortunate to have seen the tour for this album in 1985. SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO SOOOOOOOOOOO So good. Bad Company opened for them. One of my favorite concerts ever. I can't express how LOUD a deep purple concert was. They held the Guinness record for many years.
Saw them in early June in 1985 in Stockholm. One had to be in a telephone queue for tickets for the 10 000 seat ice stadium. "Sorry, the concert on Friday is sold out". Oh. "But there is an extra concert on Saturday. It is sold out". Oh. "But there is a second extra concert on Sunday, there are still seats left. Is that OK?". Yes!!!! Bloody brilliant! I bought eight tickets and a bunch of friends and my sister came along.
The middle section sees a shift to 9/4 time. In concert, Jon would solo on the Hammond. They closed the song with Ian Gillan singing a line from Jesus Christ Superstar (which he appeared on the original album singing the role of Christ) played along with middle eastern scales.
This was one of two successful singles from the much anticipated 1984 comeback album by the pioneering Mark II lineup of Blackmore, Gillan, Glover, Lord, and Paice. "Knocking at Your Back Door" was the other single and another standout. Mk II hadn't been heard from since 1973, the year of their legendary "Made in Japan" and becoming the biggest band in the US. Another DP song with Michael Moorcock inspired lyrics is "Stormbringer." The "Live in Paris 1975" rendition is particularly strong. Moorcock also influenced and occasionally collaborated with Blue Oyster Cult and Hawkwind, the two most well-known bands of sci-fi, fantasy, and assorted arcana.
The Michael Moorcock books centered on the concept of the eternal champion - a warrior in various guises who would appear at a time and place when desperately needed to save a civilization (or world) from disaster.
Was fortunate to see many iterations of “Purple.” This was a highlight. John Lord remains a personal favorite that added an element few other bands had. Don Airey was John’s “perfect choice” to replace himself when he left for health reasons. RIP John.
He didn’t leave for health reasons he just didn’t want to tour anymore..he died about 10 years after he left deep purple from pancreatic cancer to pursue classical type music.
Another cool song by them is "Pictures Of Home" from their album Machine Head, along with "Maybe I'm A Leo". Really awesome that you got to this one, yeah, it's one of my favorites, thanks!
The video was shot at the mansion they recorded the perfect strangers album in Stowe Vermont. This was their comeback album in 1984 after this version of the band broke up in 73.
Does this remind anyone else of Stargazer by Rainbow? Sal…., I’d never heard this Deep Purple song before! . I kept thinking it reminded me of something. Snd it was Stargazer by Rainbow. You haven’t heard that yet I don’t believe. Similar vibe. Blackmore on guitar, Dio on vocals (one of the best rock vocalists) and the fabulous Cozy Powell on drums.
Mark II started 69 and ended 73. Then they had Mark III and Mark IV up until late 75 when Paice and Lord disbanded the group. And in 84 Mark II rejoined to see if the magic still was there, and it was.
Yeah, this was their comeback album after been apart for years. And they didn't know how they'd be accepted. They found that they were accepted quite well since they had to add 2 and 3 shows to alot of the stops when they toured for the album. And they never liked making videos that's why the video didn't make sense. When they came to Cleveland they played the d jays from WMMS in soccer and kicked their ass. Yeah. Peace
This is by far my favourite track off the album (which was the first they released after I "discovered" them, and the last I bought on vinyl.) Knocking At Your Backdoor is good musically but shows their worst instincts lyrically, and the rest is...fine. For something a bit different, maybe check out Gillan & Glover's cover of Lonely Avenue. I sang it at my wedding! Also: ha ha, Rush did a song about that zone called, appropriately enough, The Twilight Zone. You'd probably enjoy it!
deep purple mark 1 from 1968-69 had a different singer and bass player. mark 2 1970-1973 is the version here that reunited. deep purple mark 3 1974-75 once again had a new singer and bass player. the singer for mark 3 was david coverdale who would start the band whitesnake in 1978. there are many versions of deep purple. each one unique
Comeback in the idea of a return to this lineup of the band. Group had been a bit hit and miss during the years between this lineup breaking up and their reformation in the 80's
I think this song can give thanks to Led Zeppelin’s Kashmir. Same vibe. Deep Purple was against doing music videos so they just recorded them while making the album. You need to do Deep Purple Woman From Tokyo studio version.
Dude, I know you seem to be digging older music But, if you like music that takes you on a voyage of the mind. You NEED to check out Avenged Sevenfold . The song Higher and Exist. Both will take you on a journey you will never forget. I'm 59 years old I was there when Deep Purple was on top both times. I also thought NONE of this later metal worth a crap. Then I took the time to explore as you are now. I'm here to tell you no one tells a tale like A7X. Give them a try.
As a diehard Purple fan, it pains me to say that I actually do not like this song very much. The riff is so, so good, as well as the ethereal, melodic elements in the outro - BUT - I feel it is completely discordant with the main melody of the song.
Man do I agree. It would have been great if they would have just showed them playing through the song. Soccer? Hot air balloon? Half empty pool full of green shit. Really bad.
GREAT song!!! Video is crap. They could have done SO much with this either showing the band playing all the way through, or incorporating some really cool special effects. Instead they just pieced in so much non-sequitur nonsense!

Me too! Excellent concert

Awesome concert in 1985
Same here, South Fla!!! Still have the long sleeve purple concert shirt!✌🎶
Me too, glad it was the classic Mark 2 line up, it was loud as hell and they played great.
Doesn’t get any “DEEPER”than “PURPLE “ 💜💜💜Love this song!
Deep purple is super mega great band...school of rockers...
Hell of a comeback album
Perfect. Perfect ❤❤
The middle section sees a shift to 9/4 time. In concert, Jon would solo on the Hammond. They closed the song with Ian Gillan singing a line from Jesus Christ Superstar (which he appeared on the original album singing the role of Christ) played along with middle eastern scales.
Such a great band, especially this 'classic' line up, they never did a bad song.
Jon Lord is the best in his keyboard for this song

Hey man I see u react to purple all the time! Cheers to u
Great song I rember waiting in line at Tower Records for the release.... knocking at your back door is another banger off this LP
Just a great rock song. No filler all killer and some dope lyrical lines in it
Deep Purple like Led Zeppelin

Great reactions as always, the closing riff always reminds me of Zeppelin’s Kashmir.

Great song. I would suggest Flight Of The Rat next. Off the Deep Purple In Rock album. This song is 3 seconds short of 8 mins. A real banger.
Good call. One of those songs that has it all.
nice
For future reference....all Deep Purple songs are cool :)
Deep Purple is one of the greatest bands ever but if you like music based on Sci fi and things of that nature you need to check out Blue Oyster Cult.
The video was shot at the mansion they recorded the perfect strangers album in Stowe Vermont. This was their comeback album in 1984 after this version of the band broke up in 73.
Twilight zone? Zone? Either way this song is fire
"Thumbs Up From Downunder!"
Yeah!
You were probably were referring to the Twilight Zone, but the keys/organ at the end definitely have a Dr Who feel.
It was just nice to see the band back together and getting along and having fun together even if short lived.
True, the outro definitely leans toward the mystical. I always thought of it as more of an Arabic vibe to go along with the dimensional aspect.
Does this remind anyone else of Stargazer by Rainbow?
