  • The Kunisaki Peninsula (国東半島, Kunisaki Hantō) is situated in northern Oita Prefecture, facing the Seto Inland Sea. It has a number of valleys radiating from Mount Futago at its center. Mostly covered by forests and sparsely populated farmlands, the peninsula is dotted with temples of various stature, from the important Futagoji Temple and celebrated Fukiji Temple to less prominent, small and rustic ones.
The Kunisaki Peninsula is characterized by its steep terrain and volcanic soil which is easily permeated by rain water resulting in a very particular sustainable system of agriculture, forestry and water in the oak forests and ponds, which have been designated as a Globally Important Agricultural Heritage System.
In this episode of Feel Fukuoka`s Kunisaki series, Sam will do stay at a farm house and also try temple lodging. Check out what he experienced during his trip, leave a comment, like and subscribe.

great video, content and presentation, I loved that you made it about the place, location and the experience, and not about your ego or personality like so many typically jikochu westerners do.

Great video as always! Sam, how's the level of English understanding there in the peninsula? You seem to have a great command of Japanese and at least one of your hosts spoke English, but if a beginner-level Japanese speaker were to visit (I would say I'm close to A2 level), how would they fare?

Do you have any recommendations to find shukubos and farm stays in japanese rural areas? During my studies abroad in Kyushu, I visited a wonderful shukubo in Kyoto, which is quite known for temple lodgings. However, this time I would like to take my family around in Shikoku and Kyushu and stay at a temple overnight as well. The only shukubo I could find online in Shikoku seem to accommodate masses of pilgrims and I would much prefer smaller and more quiet places where you can eat sitting on tatami as well, so looking for less commercialized ones.
