Adam adds a new prop replica to his collection: Kylo Ren's helmet from Star Wars: The Force Awakens! This is actually Adam's second Kylo Ren helmet--he has a modified Black Series Voice Changer helmet and now this high-end model by Prop Shop. We examine the prop to admire its fabrication and detail.

Kylo Ren's helmet is such a beautiful design. Mind you it does look better with the hood, but it both pays tribute to Vader's while standing completely on its own.
I think it makes you look live Marko Jaric, which is not a good thing.
It looks like a platypus. That isn't a scary animal and this helmet made Darth Emo not a scary character at all.

I'm pretty sure that was Darth Vader's ashes.
Darth Vader's ashes are scattered to the wind. Remember that many decades have passed since Vader's funeral in the forest moon of Endor.
In an interview not to long ago, JJ Abrams said that the ashes were from all the people Kylo Ren had killed. Therefore Kylo keeps the ashes of his enemies as some type of trophy.

Adam, don't you feel slightly ripped off paying $2,000 for a 3D printed piece? Seems like at that price point they should be making molds and using higher quality materials, while still giving it that authentic paint job and look.
I Agree he could make a better and cheeper version himself.
I guess it's as much to do with funding the company and it being worth their while to make, plus licensing expenses. It is as authentic as it's possible to get (without being film worn) and they have decided that's $2000, for whatever reason. There's nothing making anyone buy it's clear what the situation is going in. As Adam and Norm say, you can get one almost as good for under $100, so it's not like people who want this helment is being held to ransom. Adam seems to think it was worth it, so for him it was worth it. For most people it won't be.
This is the closest to the original you will get, mold it and cast it, will make it have a different shape, shrinks and the detail gets lost in the cleaning process
keep in mind though it is made in with an industrial 3d printer which goes upwards of 100s of thousands of dollars!
Aside from the materials that thing is licensed, and that makes it way more expensive.

Dudes, Andrew Ainsworth has been selling original Storm Trooper armor since quite a while. Lucasarts did try to shut him down, but lost in court as far as I understand. So there's a 1976 A New Hope original prop maker selling stuff legally at least partially using the original molds.

take a deep breath. Prop shop although they did work on the film as out source did not do costume effects on star wars force awakens, that was Pierre Bohannas amazing team. Pierres team have done some amazing work including the tom cruse exosuits for edge of tomorrow. Prop shop may have got the contract to make replicas but they are just scanning the work of another team.

Peter Lyon, the swordsmith who made the swords in the Lord of the Rings movies _has_ made official swords for sale to the public sold through Weta Workshop. Very pricey and very small editions.
Same can be said for the rings from the movie.

This is completely a new Era for fans and nerds alike, I'm actually kind of surprised this hasn't been done to the extent before (at least the legal side of things) especially with the explosion of Cosplay and ComicCon type events.
And there is a reason why some props you can find that were build by fans are much more complex and sophisticated than the original. Because they try to fit all functions in one thing.

There are a few legal examples of Prop makers selling their props.
A Notable one is Joe D. Mack selling his Remake Elm Street glove.

I would love to see a one day build of a lightsaber you can make from parts from a hardware store...but not using other peoples make up your own.
How I understand it; propshop did not create the original Kylo helm. They got permission to used the original props in high resolution data scans, but these aren't "screen used" or even "model mock ups" just accurate, high grade prop replicas.
Prop Shop did create the original props for The Force Awakens. They used 3d printing to replicate the props from the original movies for TFA in order to correctly match things such as the interior of the Millenium Falcon. There is the backwards case of the 9/10th Doctor's sonic was replaced by a prop remade from a released toy of the original because the larger size fit hands better and showed up better on screen.

The hood that Kylo Ren wears is very thick and large, so whenever he wears the hood it does tend to make the helmet look a little bigger. Not to mention the large scarf/caplet that he wears also hides his neck making it tough to tell where it all starts and ends. Theres a shot or two on spoiler-bridge that show the helmet clearly resting on his head without the caplet when he is wearing the alternate version of the costume and the helmet does actually look slightly smaller when you can see his neck.
Either way, I'm gonna assume this helmet is made to the same dimensions as Adam Driver's head.

I've worked for Pierre twice and hate seeing some one else getting credit for his work. having just finished shoot episode 8 I can personally tell you we had our own prop shop on site making the props, go to IMDB and ask your self if prop shop made all the props why are there so many prop makers on payroll?

Amazon Review repeatedly bring up the Black Series Kylo Ren helmet being too small for adult males in many cases. Seeing a side-by-side comparison of it with this would be great.
Ok, so was after a black series one for a while , but sold out in Australia, and gave up looking. While watching this went on eBay and found one and purchased before video ended, impulse buying at its best

Voice changer is kind of crappy (as most are in costume helmets) but if you want it to look more real, check out Cosplay Chris, he redid one and it looks really good.

This helmet costs more than twice of what an official, licensed Darth Vader helmet cost back in 2005 and that helmet is more complex and consists of more pieces than Kylo Ren's.
Rubbertoe Replicas makes props for Doctor Who and also sells replicas of them to consumers
