There was a Next Gen episode where two Klingons were beamed aboard supposedly without weapons, but once in private they both took parts from a belt-buckle, a tip from a boot, etc and put together a couple of assassin weapons. I’d like to see the separate parts for that machined. Even on camera the prop looked extra cheesy, but this guy could improve on that I’m sure.

I still have my dad’s tricorder! One of his favourite stories was about when a student came into his shop to ask about what type of metal a part was.
So Dad- already recognizing the metal- pulls out his tricorder and hits a few buttons, beep boop whirlwhirl and goes “ah, that is a type 316 stainless steel!”
The student then wore a huge grin and turned to leave. Apparently he had never seen a tricorder before because he thought it was all real 😭 my dad had to chase him down and explain it was just a toy so he didn’t eagerly tell the superiors about a magic metal analyzer he had. I don’t think they had portable XRF metal analyzers in the 1980s, so that must’ve been wild
    Love you lots, Dad

I love the Cobra Phaser, There were two versions of that design. The version shown here was made early on in the show, but by TNG's season 6 through to DS9's third season and Voyager's first season, it didn't have the markings on it and the power level meter was removed, which I believe was due to battery power considerations as this was before the prop redesign.
As for Geordi's VISOR, We did see the inside, though not in detail, in "Starship mine" when Dr. Crusher was modifying it to emit a hypersonic pulse. And we only saw mesh used behind the brass pins at least ONCE in the second season which is when the all-metal version of the prop was produced. The first season was literally a heavily modified banana clip which you can tell because of the pins alternating between the upper and lower frame.

    • @Jastor00

      @julia.h3673 3 місяці тому

I've never been able to get over the banana clip aspect of Geordi's visor, and always imagined the silly conversations in the prop department must have gone something like guys saying, no one will ever notice, and then a woman walks by and says hey, nice banana clip hahaha!, but then the guys held firm, yeah, no one will notice. (that imagined convo is all said with love, but the visor is a banana clip and always will be in my eyes).

That phaser is nice and all, but it sure would be cool if they had the overload feature- "...now if you hold both buttons together, you can initiate the overload sequence..."
    Um, take my money!

I had a Playmates toy phaser (that I picked up at a church thrift store of all places) that actually had that feature. Holding both buttons for a few seconds caused it to play the overload buildup sound then ended with a big explosion sound.
I burned through so so many AA batteries playing with that crazy thing.

If SNW production starts using these as props, it won’t be the first trek series to do that. Some ships in previous series were off the shelf model kits. Enterprise used toy TOS phasers in season 4, and even toy versions of their own phase pistols

The phasers built for Strange New Worlds cost $6,250 (US) apiece. So if you have to give an extra a phaser and have them stand in the background, you give them the toy phaser.

Haven't they used toys for background ships too?

    • @Tuskin38

@@DogsRNice I can't think of any toys used as a background ships, but they have used commercial model kits as far back as TOS.

Love Adam's reaction to these replicas. It's the same as mine, but he has the experience of building props like that, so he gets the added joy of seeing the results of "what if we had to time to make this look real?"
I'll probably never own one of these, but if I had the means I would totally get them.

At 8:58 he starts going into the difference between a prop replica and an electronic accessory and why certain products can/can't do certain things, and it makes total sense. The Wand Company has the replica Pokeballs which retail for around $99+ depending on the type of ball you get, but it doesn't even make sounds or open! But, after hearing this explanation it makes total sense lol

Adam's trigger discipline while handling the phaser is great to see. Also I wonder if putting a couple of adhesive foam feet on each of the visor's temples might be able to pressure fit it in place onto thep person's head...

I would do small neodymium magnets. Glue those to the temples in the correct place, and thin steel plates on the visor.
