I feel for DF. I've seen them be accused of being PC fanboys and against consoles, being Xbox fanboys, PS5 Fanboys...etc. I've also seen people say X person is terrible and others are great, while another set of people say Y person is terrible and others are great. People are nuts, just look at data from a neutral perspective and go from there.
They are called fanboys and you do best to try and ignore them. Anyone with more than 3 brain cells can see DF are neutral and HAVE to be otherwise they lose their respected reputation.
It’s the fanboys, they just get upset when their preferred console dips to 58fps and the other one doesn’t, or it dips to 1300p and the other one doesn’t. It’s ironic seeing fanboys call DF fanboys lmao
@@VisualsByMax1 what’s funny about people like that is that without videos like this they wouldn’t even be able to tell the difference between versions. Like no one actually notices of resolution is 200p lower on one version yet these people make it out to be like this massive thing
DF is the best at what they do, period. They don't have any equals on UA-cam. It's disheartening to hear John be fazed by those fanboys, especially on Twitter. These are all such good people, they deserved to be praised not shit on when someone's plastic box doesn't perform how they want it to.
I remember getting a decent way through Metro Exodus when it came out but I remember bouncing off it unfortunately due to some annoyingly frequent crashes. Hopefully that's been sorted, plus the massive frame rate boost is a great reason to come back. I think it's worth appreciating how many developers are giving us free patches like this rather than a paid remaster - a good time to be a gamer I think
@@kingslayer1781 Even with the flashlight sometimes it's too dark and having an OLED TV causes black crush. They will definitely patch it in a few days I think.
That’s pretty much the norm for cross platform games. Xbox usually runs a slightly higher resolution, but PS5 runs a more consistent frame rate. Both can have their advantages
I would never have guessed we'd see real time ray traced GI on these consoles. This is a huge achievement. With this and ratchet and clank last weekend, im curious to see what other features devs can cook up.
@@earnistse4899 You can use ray tracing in a "cherry picked" manner, perhaps for reflections, shadows, mixed with faked/baked or cycling global lighting conditions -- but integrating RT into a full Global Illumination (GI) pipeline - affecting an entire given environment - is computationally demanding. By that I mean, even for a $2500 PC with a powerhouse CPU&GPU -- real-time ray tracing of any sort is expensive (taxing) on any modern game-focused hardware. So it's very impressive that 4A pulled this off on $399-$499 game consoles... and at a solid 60fps to boot, no 30fps compromises. GREAT effort by 4A on these Series X and PS5 versions. Perhaps these consoles are going to surprise us more than many people theorized. Thanks to smart use of scaling and reconstruction techniques. The $299 Series S manages to produce rather decent results, considering it's working with only 20 CUs and diminished memory. Users on 1080p displays receive a good result for such a low cost little box. The saving grace of the Series S is likely the strong CPU.
@@earnistse4899 That's a bit subjective, as the consoles use custom parts. But it's all AMD so you can guesstimate. *Maybe* a Ryzen 7 3700x CPU, and *maybe* the RX 6800 XT - albeit with reduced CUs. Generationally/feature-wise those are pretty close matches. Adding to the subjectivity on PC is the different image reconstruction algorithms between Nvidia and AMD GPUs (valid to mention here, considering 4A's proprietary engine temporal reconstruction and DRS), with Nvidia's DLSS being the vastly, vastly superior solution vs. AMD's up and coming FSR. One uses intense AI/machine learning and benefits from dedicated hardware - the tensor cores on recent Nvidia GPUs, while AMD's in its current form is a glorified spatial upscale - albeit very efficiently using general purpose compute, with room there to improve.
I am not changing my TV settings that much to fix the brightness/gamma issues in a game. Clearly it needs to be fixed by 4A as no one should have to fix something like a properly calibrated set to make ONE game look better.
I blame them for leaving the issue, not for the problem existing. And like you said, Remedy fixed it (I personally didn't know there was ever an issue) but 4A hasn't and the issue started on their PS4 version. It's not like the consoles are incapable of producing the same colors, there's just a line of code somewhere that's preventing the Sony systems' gamma settings from aligning with that of the game's true default settings.
To fix the ps5 darkness go to tv settings, turn dynamic on, change brightness settings in ps5 all way up, turn HDR on, then back off, reboot ps5, turn TV around facing wall, then hold start for 5 seconds. Should fix it

Sounds like the same Sony engineers who worked on their backwards compatibility, smart delivery and save game migration implemented this. ;)
Gamma doesn't control shadows or highlights. It controls the brightness curve of the midtones which by extension tend to compress or expand the upper and lower ranges of the image, but the white and black points remain pinned. The gamma screen is working fine here, it's just that the black point is already clipped on PS5.
Yeah, they said they had to work around the bug by misconfiguring Limited vs. Full RGB. I don't know, but it seems like the developers are filling the Full Range (0 to 255) but indicating to the system that it's Limited Range (16 to 235), so the dark values are getting cut off as it's restretched to the display range.
Even with just controlling the curve, it will make the difference between near black and black values larger /smaller. That is what the point is. And that will determine if you can see some near black patterns or not. That it is impossible to make nar black colors separate from black is an issue with the Gamma. But, if the Gama works correctly and the near black colors is crushed to actually black, then we will see this result as well. So, I assume that what is happening is the later. Then the Gamma can very well be working. And as we could see the Gamma affected the other colors and near white areas clearly got changed, we can assume that is the case.
@@mitchjames9350 Cmon dude TLOU 2 rules and so does Metro. Metro gets overlooked because...actually I have no idea why it's not more popular. Eastern European games rarely get the love they deserve.
I wish that 4A enables tessellation on the consoles too (maybe at x16-x32 levels). Metro Exodus is one of those games that really benefits from tessellation. It adds another layer of detail to numerous materials in the world. Really makes the world more touchable, even though its a game xD
@@raresmacovei8382 fidelity fx super res is not compatible with temporal anti aliasing because fidelity fx is a temporal upscaling solution. Basically most games on console wont use this because they already utilise different versions of it
Honestly I hate the way black levels are implemented in this game. If I manually adjust gamma or contrast with Nvidia Freestyle so that complete blackness is not a washed out mess, the details in the shadows become crushed. So you either have the option of playing it with washed out colors or crushed blacks. Just perfect.
The shadows can get a little heavy. I’m playing with a hdr display and I just adjusted the gamma to one notch above default and I feel like getting good highlights without losing too much detail in the shadows. It seems intentional that the blacks are so prominent but it can be a little annoying.
I know I seem to be in the minority, but I actually love crushed blacks. In real life there are absolutely crushed blacks because there’s no light in certain situations. Like in a “pitch black room” on a moonless night with the shades drawn. Or when you “can’t see your hand in front of your face”. I don’t think it’s a problem of development or art style, I think it’s actually more realistic. It always bugs me and confuses me when Alex talks about blacks being crushed. I’m like “but you’re not supposed to see anything!”. I loved how the original splinter cell game forced you, because of crushing blacks, to use your night vision goggles for instance. It can become a really cool stealth mechanic! Or imagine your tailing someone in the dreaded asssassins creed tailing mission and you lose them because they duck down a dark alley, or under the shadow of a tree, to try to lose you! That would add some great tension to the chase!
Both versions are superb in graphics and performance. But the adaptive triggers on the PS5 are so good. Cranking that one rifle or charging your batteries and feeling the resistance is awesome!
Favorite thing for me so far about next gen is the crazy load times and quick resume it's been such a difference coming from the base xbox 1 and ps4, 120fps has also been sweet
I was looking at the image and thought the same thing. The PS5 looks better but if there is black crush then it would be a problem on an OLED for example
I think the times that you really can see that it's a mistake, is in brighter areas, the shadows are definitely too dark on PS5, it looks unrealistic. Like this whole section 8:46, here 10:47, here 6:29. In darker areas though, both versions look good. At the end of the day, we're not even seeing the HDR version here, just the regular SDR.
It’s not darker. They have wrong tv settings. My gamma settings work like they should be and I even sent them a screen shot. They should rather control their tv.
It doesn't only look darker, it also looks like there too much color saturation. Look how red her skin looks at 4:26 or the desert along with her at 5:40 or even the over vibrant colors at 11:32
I don't know if it's just me but ps5 colors looks better to me the blacks look dark and honestly more realistic. Xbox black looks Grey and I don't like how it highlights shadows
Personal preference. This is why games tend to allow users to configure some of these settings. It looks like the gamma setting is broken on the PS5 so some of the dark areas look darker, hence increasing the contrast.
You can get the same result on Xbox by tweeking the gamma value. It's a weird bug anyway, the One X version had this issue too but now it's the ps5 version, this bug exist since the 360 era I can't believe it's still a thing
Picked this up today by buying the gold edition digital on ps store for £16!! Automatically downloaded the PS5 version. The lighting is beautiful soft and inviting. I've never experienced the natural ambience to this degree before its difficult to articulate without just playing for yourself. The immersion is insane and I think 60fps and ray tracing really draws you into the world, I'm mega impressed, glad I picked it up 😎👍
@@shakybeevessouls No worries, you are welcome and an eloquent and detailed quick review like that can make someone curious and invested enough to get the game - I'm likely to be one such person when I clear some of my disgustingly large backlog.
I know it's not related to the consoles, but are you guys going to look at DLSS 2.2? Apparently you can manually add support for that in certain games and they show some improvement, especially in terms of low levels of ghosting artifacts.
Maybe it's just my display but I kinda actually like the PS5's colour levels better than on Series X. I feel like the blacks look too grey and washed out on the default mode on PC, and the deep darkening mode on PC looks great to me. Just a preference I suppose.
I like it to but also hate it. For example at times in the video on ps5 you couldn't see any detail when things got to dark or shadows being to dark but in open world thats where I liked it where it seems more rich. I would prefer an in between option if they had one.
Both look good in its own way. Sometimes I get the impression PS5 looks better, (less washed out) sometimes I get the impression Series X looks better. (less black crush) As DF said, it really depends on the situation. This game in 60fps, with all those features, is actually a big achievement.
This isn't even the limit. Exodus has such poor textures and tesselation. I imagine upcoming games will have RT, 1500p screen resolution, as well as insane geometry and texture resolution.
Adding visual improvements and enhancements such as this to both PS5 and Xbox Series is fantastic! I cannot wait to see native games on these consoles next year.
The problem I see is that the ‘correct’ Xbox footage has raised washed out blacks and is a little desaturated, whereas the PS5 bug allows for pure blacks but is losing detail in dark areas, and while it is more saturated the colour is shifted and no longer correct so mid-tones (especially skin tones) look dark orange and unnatural. The game has great visuals technically but even on PC the colour balance is just not correct and really detracts from the overall image.
@@Tim.... Rather a %20 bump in resolution if only occasionally losing 3 fps max. Most couldn't even detect the 3fps difference without an onscreen indicator. Way overblown.
Loaded up my old save just to get the rust off, then was happy to start a new game for all the new bells and whistles!! Nice Comparison DF excellent work!
I bought this for PS4 about 2 years ago and played it for about 15 minutes and hadn't touched it since then. Sounds like a good time to try it again on my PS5.
Isn't VRR supposed to mitigate those minor frame drops on the Series X? Honestly curious why this isn't taken into consideration, VRR plus high res should be better experience.
It's mentioned in the Series X specific video. Most people don't own a VRR compatible TV so ignoring frame drops just to keep Xbox fanboys egos intact would be a disengenous.
Eventually when VRR becomes more standardized it could be introduced as a real factor, but fundamentally a console game on closed spec architecture (unlike PC) has the advantage of predictable optimization and should not have to depend on a TV/display's feature to iron-out frame delivery hiccups. Here that's not an issue, as both versions perform great and support a very smooth gameplay experience overall.
After testing the sdr and hdr of this game on the series x I can confidently tell you that both gamma curves are broken. Sdr on xbox has blacks that are so grey it is in no way an artists choice situation. Ps5 has pure blacks and it is actually the exact same in hdr for the series x. They are identical. Problem is that even though this is closer to correct it still suffers from crushed blacks and some overly dark areas. I have a calibrated lg cx oled and it's easy to see right away. Hopefully 4A games will come back and fix these next gen versions as the ray traced lighting is still a treat to behold on consoles.
Raytracing on consoles just 6/7 months after launch. I didn't expect raytracing to be used so early on. Maybe this will allow for some breakthroughs where they make it more efficient.
@H N it's still lost detail. if you expand the range out to be fully utilized, you just quantize everything. you're eye can "fill in the gaps" but the information that would otherwise be there if the devs just output the full range to begin with is not recoverable
I wonder if developers are starting to take into account that Xbox has VRR so they can push the res up a bit more since the FPS dipping into the 50's is not noticeable on a VRR monitor.
Problem is, most people don't own TVs with VRR. So no, they won't do it for now (unfortunately, as PS5 surely gets the VRR update this year as well). Maybe when VRR is more widely available on the average TV set, then they could take advantage of it.
If you're on a TV make sure your colour space option in the Xbox settings is set to standard and if you're on a monitor set it to PC RGB. Also if your display is only HDMI 2.0 then tick the "allow 4:2:2" setting. If it's HDMI 2.1 leave this off.

Yeah so non existant differences beside some darkest scenes on PS5 that's it. Three platforms are awesome 👍 X BOX, PlayStation and PC are great platforms.
I wish these guys did reviews with games with VRR displays. then tell us what feels smoother. In my experience with tv, when you have variable refresh (either gsync or freesync) you can't detect most frame rate dips, only if it really tanks, but if you have a locked display, you may be able to notice even small ones. I'd like to know if the VRR in the ps5 is even working.
Some wise-ass Sony engineer with flawed and niche view of "more contrasty the better" in Tokyo is probably the culprit. Or a clueless executive said after a presentation: -"Blacks, we need darker blacks" -"But sir, we measured the dynamic range and if we go any darker, blacks will be crushe-" -"Go darker or I'll have you commit a seppuku!"
For games with such heavy implementation of Raytracing, the only way to have them at maximum res and performance is through DLSS or Fidelityfx Super resolution type of methods both on PC and consoles.
Why didn't they bother to optimise for the SSDs in the consoles Is 40+ seconds loading acceptable on a consoles that can fill their ram in less than 5 seconds ?
I mean they have somewhat, it's almost on par with PC. Taking true advantage of it though would likely take quite a bit of effort for an update that is free. We'll see proper optimization in their next title.
All that crap sony was spewing about the ssd being so fast it would literally transform gaming was just that.. crap. You hit a point of diminishing returns with current tech, and the "super fast ssd" is no faster than a "normal" ssd in real world use.. just like we see here.
2:50 When the game was initially released a couple of years ago, didn't the Xbox One X version of the game also have this Gamma issue? Was it ever fixed?
Played it on my X before playing it again on my new pc. The X's HDR was far better and it looked better then the pc version(looked very grey and muddy). So I believe it was fixed. The RT was awful too. Now the HDR seems to be on par with the One X in the new enhanced edition.
I wonder what's the exact resolution of the PS5 version in the 8:36 minutes part, cause if the game runs at 80% of the Series X resolution that would be like 864p or something.

I feel like it might be intentional to hide details in the shadows, battlefield 4 was dark on og Xbox and the og Xbox one was way less powerful than PS4, same here the series x is more powerful so it doesn't need to hide details as much
Same, started on ps4 but the aiming felt very off and I found it hard to aim properly, just playing for 30seconds on the ps5 it feels night and day, so much better.
So ps5 has slightly better performance and series x has slightly better image quality. Makes sense. Seems like two great versions all around then but raytracing is definately pushing these gpus hard. Also a shame they didn't optimize for ps5s ssd but it is better than ps4 and xbox one loading still. The color differences are def weird. I think the gamma thing with the far left image not showing up at all no matter how bright you make it, may be a glitch. The first time I played it on my Series X, I have the exact same problem you guys had with the ps5. No matter how bright it got it wouldn't show that left image. The next time I played my screen was considerably brighter than it should have been and I went back into that section and all three images, including the one that wouldn't show up on the left, were easy to see. Ever since it been that way and has looked great. I was never able to replicate the problem again.
Is PS5 using a different color space or gamma? It's weird. I think PS5 has some internal gamma screwage going on since this isn't the first game we noticed that.
Own this on PS5 as well, man its gorgeous. Ray tracing makes a big ass difference. I didnt notice a fps drop but I'm only like an hour into the game but its smooth as hell. You wont notice the resolution drops if you're like me.. I game on a 65 inch screen so I'm not pressed up on the tv lol.

Yeah PS and Xbox have never been this close graphics wise. You wouldnt notice the difference if it wasnt pointed out by DF in most games. I still really enjoy watching these comparisons tho.
I would be interested to see what internal resolution the PS5 Pro outputs without a patch, I feel like this would be a good indicator if this game was tested again now.
Cool for the less than 5% of people with a VRR-supported TV/display. Hypothetically if Sony added VRR to PS5 tomorrow, that still wouldn't change the fact that a microscopic portion of the audience can use it. And remember, this is console, not PC. Gsync/Freesync/VRR is bloody awesome on PC primarily because of the vast, vast range of specs that players are using. Whereas the huge advantage on consoles is the closed spec architecture with predictable ranges and 100% guaranteed targeted installed base spec. You can optimize towards highly-specific parameters. This predictable performance envelope for baseline console optimization should not need to depend on a TV/display's feature to assure smooth and even frame delivery. In the 'chain of custody' that optimization must happen prior to output. Anyway, VRR is still reeeeally useful for ironing out tiny bumps here and there, and it'll be a great to console gamers when the installed base of VRR-supported TVs begins to enter more mainstream propagation. But a closed spec console environment should inherently benefit from the predictable, finite spec towards optimization -- and NOT depend on VRR as a crutch to massage poor frame delivery. (Obviously not the case with Exodus here, as the tiny dips on Series X aren't gameplay compromising whatsoever).
I'm sure your findings are correct but in this video the XB version looks washed out as in black does not look black but gray. Nonetheless, Great job y'all!
I have to say that, simply judging from the video of course (so as pointed out, might be completely different than what they saw on the screen), on my photo-calibrated monitor, the PS5 footage looks perfect, while the Xbox footage looks washed out. If the game looked on my screen like the Xbox version, I would probably be lowering the gamma in-game, because it would annoy me that blacks are not black, but grey. The gamma correction screen looked perfectly fine even with the slider all the way to the left, the leftmost symbol was still slightly visible.
@@Ed-qv2qd Compression doesn't really make a difference here, compression shouldn't affect black levels (shadow detail - absolutely, but not black levels). Except this enhanced version was in development for pc long time before they even got final dev kits. When new games are made for XSX and PS5, the rtx2060 will be left in the dust.
It's nice to see that there is no difference in graphical and RT quality between both consoles. The drops in resolution are unfortunate but a near rock solid 60fps is certainly worth it in my opinion. I think there could be work done to improve the game for XSX & PS5. I don't know if this is an artefact of my screen or the video but I can see the left-hand most image in the gamma correction menu.
The dark image must get fixed by the devs with a patch. It's simple I guess. No reason for gamers to change their settings on their TVs. Except from that, both versions are almost equal. Slightly better resolution for the XSX, slightly better framerate for PS5.
We’ll be said he had to have the TV on RGB full and console on RGB limited. Most people would only need to change the setting in their console to limited to adhere to that change, as most people are using full on both. It’s not a huge deal to do until they fix it. Which I really hope they do. The darker image only looks good very specific areas… human skin tone in the light on ps5 looks way too off.
@@Gwynbleidd_117 I definitely wouldn’t say most people are using RGB Full on their console and TV. A vast majority of people just leave everything in auto/default, which on most TVs seems to be YCbCr or RGB Limited.
I've luckily been able to find a somewhat decent work around to the black crush issue by altering some settings on my display. By reducing contrast slightly and raising the "shadow detail" setting on my Samsung TV I've gotten it to look quite nice. @@Kelshando You need to think about it in terms of frame-time instead of fps which is often misleading. Like in this example in a 60 fps game you get a new frame every 16.6 ms (1 second equals 100 milliseconds so 100/60) whereas in a 30 fps game you get a new frame every 33.3 milliseconds (100/30). Now in the Xbox Series X version especially you get occasional drops *below* 33.3 milliseconds which would feel like a stutter when you are waiting that long for the next frame (longer than the time span between frames in a stable 30 fps game, even if momentarily in this case). It is not that big of a deal but definitely noticeable.
@@weaverquest your example is a 50% frame rate reduction, yes for that's noticeable. The human eye will see the stuttering. They're talking about a 1% drop. I would never have guessed we'd see real time ray traced GI on these consoles. This is a huge achievement. With this and ratchet and clank last weekend, im curious to see what other features devs can cook up.
What exactly is the difference between ray tracing and this (gi)
@@griffgames9538 what pc gpu are the s / x and Ps5 equal to in terms of performance in this particular game
Can’t wait for forza 8 you just know that game will be a technical marvel with full rt
I have played about 30 minutes of this game on PS5 and made no adjustments to my TV. Bottom line the game looks amazing on both platforms.
I am not changing my TV settings that much to fix the brightness/gamma issues in a game. Clearly it needs to be fixed by 4A as no one should have to fix something like a properly calibrated set to make ONE game look better.
Exactly how I feel. 4A dropped the ball with this on PS4 too. 99% of games' colors are the same on all platforms so there is no excuse lol.
Control UE has this same issue on PS5. Remedy eventually fixed it
@Console Gaming I have seen many discussions claiming that PS5’s system HDR calibration tool is borked
Same. I'll be playing on Xbox this time
I blame them for leaving the issue, not for the problem existing.
Just started the enchanced version on my PS5. I'am simply blown away! 🤯
Same here it gives you more reason to play it again 💯💯 I liked the dark version on ps5

Gamma doesn't control shadows or highlights. It controls the brightness curve of the midtones which by extension tend to compress or expand the upper and lower ranges of the image, but the white and black points remain pinned. The gamma screen is working fine here, it's just that the black point is already clipped on PS5.
Underrated comment.
yep
Correct, well said.

No listen carefully video, the lowest is 1015 when xsx is 1080p. Extremely rare situations.

Pretty cool! I hope they release a patch to fix the darker colors because it's distracting when detail is lost in the shadows.
I feel like it might be intentional to hide details in the shadows, battlefield 4 was dark on og Xbox and the og Xbox one was way less powerful than PS4, same here the series x is more powerful so it doesn't need to hide details as much

@@iamarabicandiloveamericanp7137 It is not a fact. Teraflops mean nothing. Your elementary understanding is the problem with fanboys like you.

They shouldn’t. These aren’t reviews of games, they are specifically reviews of the games rendering.
I would be interested to see what internal resolution the PS5 Pro outputs without a patch, I feel like this would be a good indicator if this game was tested again now.
IF YOU HAVE AN OLED TV WITH VRR YOU WILL NOT NOTICE THE 3 SECOND FRAME DROPS ON SERIES X STILL SILKY SMOOTH WITH THAT SUPERIOR RESOLUTION QUALITY

@@BlackPowerParty I'm sure YT plays a big part
Although it makes very little difference when you move the gamma slider in the menu, when you go back to the game you can clearly see the difference.
Thats not an excuse or reasonable, go through all those steps and cscrew your settings to aleviate black crush just slightly
They ps5 pro what do you expect
I have to say that, simply judging from the video of course (so as pointed out, might be completely different than what they saw on the screen), on my photo-calibrated monitor, the PS5 footage looks perfect, while the Xbox footage looks washed out. If the game looked on my screen like the Xbox version, I would probably be lowering the gamma in-game, because it would annoy me that blacks are not black, but grey. The gamma correction screen looked perfectly fine even with the slider all the way to the left, the leftmost symbol was still slightly visible.
You would need to have it running natively on your screen. Can't rely on a compressed You Tube vid.
@@Ed-qv2qd Compression doesn't really make a difference here, compression shouldn't affect black levels (shadow detail - absolutely, but not black levels). But yes, what we see in the video is not the same thing they saw natively. Hence why I specifically said "simply judging from the video of course".

How do these guys even tell during live play that there was a one or two fps drop with out a fps monitor active?
I think that fps overlay is on their screen, it's not added afterwards.
@@MKdubz my comment is directed at them saying that the 1 to 2 fps difference leads to the PS5 being silky smooth... two fps drop shouldn't really be noticeable at 60 frames per second.
Even in the video there is no stutter effect. I have seen vids of playstation games having a un capped framerates Tomb Raider comes to mind where xbox was a steady 30fps and play station was going from 20 fps to 50 fps and back. In that case the corresponding video you could see the shift in frame rate do to the extreme amount of fps shifting.
I know on pc running a fps monitor I have never noticed a 1 or 2% dip in frame rate. It's just not perceivable when running at high frame rates.
