  • This is a very portable (less than 50 lbs.) DIY hoist that lets one man lift and work a load of up to a ton. It cost $25 and took two hours to build. For larger loads this design can be increased from 2x4 to 4x4 construction.

My wife and I came across this video and saved our rear ends. We are building a natural Cedar Log fire pit outdoor kitchen roof and we had varying weights to deal with. The first 2 were fairly light and the 2 x 4 legs and system worked flawlessly, then two monoliths were next and after about 2 hours of trying the two heavies, we elected to install 2 - 2 x 4's to each leg and once that was accomplished again worked flawlessly. thanks so much for the idea, we will upload a video showing it under load.
    Thanks again!!

A great, to the point video in under 3 minutes. Wish more videos were like this.

Would really have liked to see the entire hoist in one shot, especially the top in position.

Thanks a TON! All these years later and your video helped me so much. I'll be doing the opposite of you, I need to pull some small trees that died and digging takes 2 hours each. 20x trees means a full week of work, maybe this will pluck them in 30 minutes each! Thanks again for a fantastic post, nearly 5 years later!

I found out the other day that eye bolts are designed to slowly fail as the eye opens under too much load. Welding them shut may lead to catastrophic failure without warning. I am not saying that this is very relevant to use in a tripod situation but it is relevant in others.

Thanks for this really informative video! I have pretty much duplicated the idea on my own, and am happy to say nothing has bowed, buckled, or broke with a similar load. I did later change the top design to all welded components and using a 1 Ton chain hoist, but the legs were the important thing not to fail. So, all good and painted up with anti mold and rot primer. Thanks!

I made mine with inch and a half heavy wall black pipe, with rings welded to them at the top to put a chain through.

Would be really helpful to see the top of the hoist in position for use (?) it looks upside down laying on the ground....

I have a truck stuck in the woods. Needs head gaskets. I tried lifting the heads by hand but i damaged the one gasket putting it back together. I think this would work great. I could even leave the exhaust manifolds on. What type of wood would be best for this?

Trying to figure out where you found flexible strap that wide. All I am finding at the Lowes is flexible 3/4" strap. I am assuming the 2x4 stubs radiating outwards are bolted ro the disks so they won't shift?

What are you building that you need such big posts?

+Scott Baker my guess would be dinosaur paddocks and/or skyrim-grade architecture.

There's an eye bolt suspended from the top of the tripod - the trailer winch strap goes through that and attaches to the load.

Dude! Did that work ok for you -- guessing you used 2x6's instead of 2x4's?
