Lavender butter cookies and herbs de province. I have also just broken off a sprig and tuck it behind my ear when working in the garden when the mosquitos are out. Love the smell.
I have five different varieties of lavendar. The French type is better in cosmetics/skin care and makes a lovely bath, just steep in a big pot and put into the bath. English type is better for culinary, I put it in my tea, with bergamot. Lavendar is one of my favorite plants!
@@micahlouise9539 oh, ok; I use that in my earl gray to bump it up a notch from double to triple bergamot. So a couple T spoons of lavender & a few drops of bergamot? Dry or fresh lavender make a difference?
Brian, I have a huge lavender plant in a planter box about 3 feet off the ground and the bees absolutely love it. But my 15 year old Australian Sheppard mix will spend hours under it, it shades her and she loves the smell. She will come in covered in lavender! That is her happy spot in the yard. So I do not trim it much, just the spent flowers and in a few weeks there are more where those were.
I use mine almost exclusively to make lavender Arnold Palmers. Half black iced tea, half lemonade. When brewing the tea, I add one teaspoon of lavender in a tea ball per bag of black tea. This will be my second season of growing, and it already looks like the harvest will be much bigger this year.
HI BRIAN, I am learning to research your videos to specific veg., fruit, tree, and so on. I have been watching for years but we are slow learners. LOL 😄 it's finally sinking in. Great teachings. Thank you so much for all your hard work. Hubby is having so much success 🙌 THANK FATHER GOD IN JESUS NAME 🙏 🙌 ❤ You are a GOD SEND. LOVE YALL ❤
I live in west central MN. Lavender here is treated as an annual, although, I had one plant come back 4 years in a row before a very cold winter, froze out the roots. I love the smell and the color but not so hot on the tea. I didn’t know how to prune any of the plants shared today so thank you for this video. I have marjoram, thyme and sage that do over winter, most winters. Good to see how to prune those plants. Thank you again.
I like seeing you actually cut things because when you said I'll cut it by 50% I was thinking just cut halfway down the leaf and then saw you cut it down right to the bottom and just left some green. I would've never thought that's what it meant. Great video 👍🏼👍🏼
I may be the only person on the planet that can't stand the smell of lavender. It's a pretty plant, but when my plumbago choked it out, I wasn't bothered. I love that you planted crocus in your herb garden, that is definitely something I will be adding for next season!
@@virginiaomalleyI used to dislike it as well but it has grown on me. I now don’t absolutely love it by itself but definitely enjoy it with mint or other smells. But there definitely are artificial scents that disgust me still today.
Hey Brian, thanks for the confirmation video. I've got 250 lavender plants that I distill into a hydrosol. We get one cutting a year around the second week in July. I think I've made every lavender growing mistake known but when and how to prune was one of the last things I got under control. Always enjoy your content.
Hi from down under. Thank you for your advice. I put my harvested lavender in a pillow case, tie the end then bang the pillow case against a wall or fence. You then have the all the lavender bits to put into a organza bag for use.
Mix some lavender in when you’re roasting pork and wow! It’s really remarkable. As well as in soups…it one of the French Herbs de Provence…used in most everything.
Lavender is an essential in true French herb de province. I'm jealous cause I've never been able to get it to grow for me and I've lived in several different zones. I'll try again this year and see if it's overheating over watering or something else. Thanks again for showing us how to love our gardens even more!
Never give up; never surrender! (Just watched Galaxy Quest......again) Took me years to grow an edible brussel sprout! You haven't failed till you give up trying; you've just discovered what doesn't work. 🙂 You can do this!!
I have too much ADHD to create very many traditions, but one I love every year is going outside on Thanksgiving morning to harvest sage to saute with onions and celery for the turkey stuffing. The whole house starts smelling like Thanksgiving as soon as that sage hits the frying pan.
My lavender gets flattened by the snow every year😄 so it's a yearly prune in the spring. I don't particularly like the flavor either. Not all varieties are culinary, just certain ones. I dry the flowers. Too pretty not to dry. Good herbal video! Thanks Brian!💞
Fantastic video for reminding me to cut back my herbs. Your straight forward approach to teaching is so helpful for me to apply to my own garden. Thank you Brian.
The Goonies! Great shirt!! NEVER SAY DIE!!! I've watched a couple of Goonies documentaries recently, so a bit of your shirt in the thumbnail caught my eye...
WOW, thanks Brian! Great timing as am thinking it's getting to be that tine in zone 5a. You can read all you want but seeing someone so fearlessly go at it bolsters my trimming courage :O)
Love the perennial plant/ flower care!! I haven’t cut mine often enough! Great video! Felt your pain cutting the drip line! Been there! Thank you as always! 😊🪴
Thanks for the heads up on the Lavender pruning. I am on the South-East coast of Australia and my two Lavenders have gone total and utter nuts so I am heading out and pruning them right now. So thank you again Mate!! :)
Great video again! I love lavender!!! I have 2 new lavender plants and 2 that are 3 years old. And I'm always nervous to trim them but seeing you today you make it so simple. And the herbs...wow I'm doing this tomorrow morning 😅 Thanks
I am growing lavender for the first time. I intended to put it near my roses, but the ground is so very "clay-ey", that I put it in a pot. Zone 9b, So Cal. I have used lavender oil for decades. It's the best basic essencial oil. Very relaxing.
I can imagine how delightful those herbs smell! I harvest mine for the kitchen and other projects. Thank you for this video..very timely. I need to do some pruning
Thanks for yet another great video. I had to take out an old, woody lavender, and will be putting in another. Because of your video I know how to care for the plant now, even in Zone 7. I like to use the lavender in soaps, and I give it to friends who are being creative with lavender.
Lavender is one of the ingredients in some Herbs de Provence mixes, (in North American blends). Rosemary, Savory, Thyme, Lavender, Basil and Oregano. Some include also: Marjoram, Tarragon and Bay Leaf. I'm currently two herbs away from making my own, (Marjoram and Savory). I may have to buy plants on those. Might be worth drying some out to make your own mix.
Have trouble growing it in Chicago but I love it. I make a lavender lemon pana cotta that's delish! You just can't use too much lavender or it will taste like soap. I also put lavender flowers in a jar of sugar to make lavender sugar for tea.
Again prefect timing, Brian. I have a lavender plant in a large pot that I planted last year and I'm not sure if it made it through my N.J. winter. But I'll trim it back, give it a very, very light sprinkle of fertilizer and hope for the best. Thanks Brian.
Excellent! I have never seen anything like this. I have wanted to grow lavender for years, but I was never able to. This is inspiring. May be my first time this year. THANKS. Oregano is also one of my favorite spices.
Thanks for teaching me! I love lavender and it's coming back this year so now I know how to trim it! I think it must smell like heaven in your plant bed there.
I am glad I watched this video. I don't have any lavender but I do have several of the other herbs. Now I know how to trim them back as well. Thanks again Brian.
I love lavender. I have three french province and two are huge. And I am starting a munsted and would like to get several more. Also, a spanish lavender. Love them un soaps and lotion. They smell divine

In Oregon the evergreen Grosso has run amock along the front west retaining wall because it doesn't like being pruned back hard to "mound". It likes to have a hole in the middle of big and woody branches like sagebrush on the prairie! Tried multiple pruning throughout the year. Tried once a year. Results are the same. Freestyle, all over the place branching. But you can't beat the fragrance and nice long stems for weaving in ribbon for sachets.
