Albert King called Janis "The Queen of the Blues".
    Rest in peace sweet Pearl!

She was a founding member of the 27 club. Her and Jimmy Hendrix died about one month apart…at 27

welcome to the incredible Janis Joplin, you must watch her live performance of Ball and Chain, from the Monterery Pop fest.

Best Female Vocalist to ever grace this planet. Cry Baby, Ball and Chain Live at Monterey Pop Festival, Little Girl Blue is a must, the a cappella version of Mercedes Benz. That should get you started. Janis had a really hard life. When someone states that she sings with all the raw emotion anyone could give, it’s not a lie. She was bullied from the time she was a child until college when she was voted the ugliest man on campus. She had a beautiful soul though and unfortunately died at age 27 before she even realized just how much her fans loved her.

Summertime is from George Gerswins Porgy and Bess. Originally written as a lullaby in Porgy and Bess. Covered by Billy Holiday, Ella Fitzgerald, and other legends.

Absolutely other worldly! I still play her album that I bought back then. I'm hearing her song "Cry, Baby" in a commercial lately, another one you might react to, also "Me and Bobby Magee," "Little Girl Blue," and definitely the live Monterrey Pops version of "Ball and Chain." Man, she is missed!

Janis is truly unique. Many try to compare her to other but till this day her singing style and performance is in a category like no other. Ball and Chain at Monterey Pop Festival is incredible or I'd recommend Cry Baby too (live or recorded).

"Vibrato" is the term you're looking for, to describe the vocal technique of making the voice waver.
Janis was a force of Nature. And Spirit.

She passed away 50 years ago now at the age of 27 due to drug abuse, she has some iconic songs you may have heard and just not know she was the artist. She was the first tattooed celebrity, led the hippie movement and opened doors for women’s rights too and in my opinion is the best vocalist to ever live.

Pure raw emotional power, she was huge from 1967 when she burst on the scene at the Monterrey Pop Festival until her untimely death in 1970. The studio version of "Summertime" is my favorite of her tracks, but there are many more. Big Brother and the Holding Company is the band.

I loved your reaction👏👏👏‼️. Stunned and disbelieving...
My girl Janis✌️🌹🎶🦋. Her star burned out way too soon💫🌟. I also encourage you to experience her live at the Monterey Pop Festival. She always gave 200% and left people stunned. Mama Cass from the Mommas and Poppas was in the audience and was witnessing her for the first time. The camera caught her reaction.
I had the privilege and pleasure of seeing her in person the last time she played at the Avalon Ballroom in San Francisco in 1969. She blew the doors off the place and left us all forever changed.

Listen to "Piece of my Heart" and the original version of "Summertime" from "Cheap Thrills" by Big Brother and the Holding Company, her debut album. Some of her best work. She was a major star at Woodstock. She died of an overdose at the young age of 27 on Oct. 4, 1970, at the height of her career.

I see the stunned reaction of people playing Janis for the first time and end up feeling like you. I think it might be that being used to the plastic pop princesses of today with their auto tuned voices and inane songs - hello Taylor Swift et. al. - people are not expecting the raw, emotional and soulful blues of Janis. Listen to Ball and Chain or Cry Baby and you will see her range is so much more then what you heard on here. What Janis does to a song is a work of art. There will never be another like her.
And while you are at it give a listen to a new band out. Black Pumas. Such a refreshing and amazing band in today's arid desert of nothing.

Janis was certainly one of a kind, there'll never be anyone like her. She's pretty much the only female artist that I listen to because I completely agree with you about modern female singers warbling away - it gets on my nerves. The rot started with Whitney Houston I think, all this screeching up and down the scale and never settling on a note. Sorry, but I hate it with a oassion - just find the bloody note and sing it!

    • @hrussell9677
      @hrussell9677 3 роки тому +1

Yes Janis was great, but different style. Whitney didn’t sing blues and rock. Whitney’s voice is probably the greatest in terms of range and purity. Love Janis, but her place in music history is different.

Unfortunately Janis never really got to live and grow more as an artist because she died from a accidental heroin overdose at the age of 27 in Oct 1970! They were in the middle of making what became her last album called Pearl which was a nickname for her and one of the songs on the album went to number one and she never got to experience that which was a cover of “Me and Bobby McGee” they finish the album and put it out after she passed! I won hundred percent agree with you there is no singer today that can match incredible voice Joplin has!! Another great song from the pearl album is “Cry Baby” but she has so many great ones just go through her catalog and pick out something but if you wanna watch something that’s really fun watch her perform with Tom Jones they’re doing a song called “raise your hand” ua-cam.com/video/mZmiefQ5y4U/v-deo.html and it is so much fun it’s a MUST watch!! Thank you for stepping into the world of Janis Joplin you will never be disappointed!!

I saw your reaction to "Nessun Dorma" , and enjoyed it very much - agree with your assessment %100. Janis Joplin is from my generation, and I'll always have a crush on her.....that might be what you're feeling. Try "Cry Baby" if you want another shot of 'Janis'....you won't be sorry. Thanks for what you are doing.....

Watch her Woodstock performance. You will see a woman in the audience (not a female, a woman) watching with her mouth hanging open in amazement. That woman is the great Cass Elliot of the Mama's and the Papa's, having the experience you just had, watching Janis propel herself into stardom.
