    i dont think it looks dated at all. to me it looks vintage-y now, and it has this 90's "zeitgeist" which is rather appealing. it's insanely beautiful i think...

    The Planet Ocean is the more reverent modern homage to the 1950's and 60's Seamasters. The case lugs and numerals are much closer

      You're right, It is, man. The problem that I have with it and the Pelagos is that they feel almost like course corrections (I also wish their cases were a bit less gigantic) That is a nice topic for a video thought, maybe I'll address the two watches and what they offer. Thank you for your comment!

      IDGuy the Planet Ocean ref. 222.30.42.20.01.001 has it all: a slimmer case because of the 2500 Calibre, the most beautiful design for a modern diver and the liquid metal. It was a transitional watch made in a limited edition, but IMO the best they ever made. These are highly sought after.

    0:43 the guy responsible was in fact Jean-Claude Biver, the visionary man that resurrected not only Omega, but other brands as well, starting with Blankpain, Hublot, TAG. What he did in this particular case, was to associate James Bond with the Omega, replacing Rolex. This proved to be a big challenge, that paid off big time, even today.

    A Seamaster 300 that looks more like the original, with arrow hands, no crown guards, no escape valve, a co-axel movement, sapphire case back, and a 300m diving depth is also available from Omega in a variety of dial colours & materials etc. for anyone for whom the Diver 300 isn't their cup of tea..

  • @jensjohansson8955

    I am happy that Omega did not use any of their old design in the SMP. If you want something that follows the traditional designs of old seamaster divers and arrow hands then buy the planet ocean or seamaster 300, not the SMP. The SMP has a distinct look and feel, completely different from anything else on the market. It takes time to appreciate the smp as I used to hate the skeleton hands, the He valve and the funky bezel and bracelet. But with time you start to love these design elements that you first did not like. The SMP has become a modern classic, an icon that is instantly recognizable. I could not imagine a SMP without for example the skeleton hands, scallop bezel and the tank tread bracelet, that would be blasphemy.

    • @dstfno

    I think the black variations of the 300m professional are underated as they are slightly harder to come across. Less ubiquitous, more versatile and perhaps a dark horse often being the "boring" variant.
    Love the Blue though - who wouldn't. I think I just love the 300m. Simple as that.

    This is so interesting to me because what I love about this channel is how we have a conversation about what makes timepieces special to us. When we look at the modern Seamaster the connection to James Bond was always there. Growing up blasting countless hours on 007 Goldeneye was just part of my childhood. But it was never really a watch that caught my attention because as a young teenager my eyes were fixated on my father's timepieces where I only hoped someday I myself could possess a collection like his Rolex Presidential and Submariner pieces. To me the Seamster also appeared dated and at the time thought it wouldnt age well.
    Moving forward to present day where now I am a man and make a living I came across the new Seamaster 300M and saw how Omega refreshed the design. It literally took me back to the point where I couldn't believe what they had done. I believe the Submariner defined the last century of divers and now the Seamster 300M will define the current one. It is a technical masterpiece surpassing the level of the Sub in almost every way.
    Personally I fell in love with it to the point where I had to have one. I may not be able to afford a new Submariner but it doesn't matter because if the Seamster was 8,500 and included a 2 year wait it would be the piece that I would chose. See these things aren't always about money or investment but about how you come to appreciate and connect with the timepiece itself. Now I can look back and appreciate what the Bond version really brought to the table and now I have a tangible story to tell where true emotion and insight comes to play. The new Seamaster I'd say is a cracking watch and I believe is often overlooked in the watch world. Much hype went into the Tudor Black Bay line which I also own but frankly more attention should have been given to this one. Hopefully time will change that.

    I love the compliments of the new Seamaster in this video, because I am almost out the door to buy one. Something is holding me back though, and that's maybe a few things. Or rather I have thought it through. Probably I just need to go see them in the store, now. However I had a Seamaster before in quartz, and a mechanical one. The mechanical one went haywire gaining over an hour a day, when it fell from even low heights onto carpet. (Who in all sincerity, would dive with that?) It happened twice, at falls less than half a metre onto carpet. That to me, is not good quality. However at least I know what I am getting into now, whereas before I was what could be called careless. Even though both drops were purely accidental. I think the Seamaster may be more durable now though, and Omega list a shock resistance rating. (I say think, because I don't recall the specifications of my last Seamester mechanical.)

The HE valve truly gives the Seamaster welcomed character and the dial is to die for. While I love my Black bay if I were to have one watch I'd go with the new Seamaster. I think it is a cool novelty. It definitely makes the watch more unique, and also is another added thing to fidget with, but it is pretty pointless. At this point in time I don't think Omega will be removing it from their line anytime soon (and that shows in them fattening up the valve on the new model.) They take pride in it and want it to show that they're not being like other brands, which is commendable. Thanks for the comment!

      Its not the only piece to have it but definitely sets it apart from the Sub and that's what Omega wanted to do. It adds uniqueness and character to the piece and having one I can tell you that it looks very exquisite. Also it gives the user an additional way to have a tangible connection to the piece because when you actuate it feels like high end jewelry, it's actually very cool.

    Boo! Stop slagging off the greatest watch ever made! 😃Fascinating analysis as always, and I do think your proposed design looks terrific. To my eye the design of the SMP has aged incredibly well, noticeably so when compared to the “pre-Bond” Seamaster which looks laughably dated by modern standards with its weird integrated bracelet. The SMP is a very special watch to me and I will never sell mine - for my generation it is THE Bond watch and is an icon in its own right. I’ll bet you a beer that Omega will do a reissue of the piece to commemorate a future Bond anniversary - 30 years of GoldenEye in 2025? Watch his space!

  • @DBravo29er
    @DBravo29er 5 років тому +1

    Very good video. But I find it a little perilous to conflate the ubiquitous nature and little-changed design of the Submariner as equating to a better watch. The Bond SMP was a course change and a new signpost in the Seamaster history. A course correction that is not young at 25 years (a full quarter century). As I consider the original Bond SMP in the context of its time, virtually nothing else that was contemporaneously made fares as well as the Sub and the SMP. And, as you correctly observed, it is not accurate to confuse a 90's Sub with a modern one; such are the quality and detail differences.
    When viewed on-wrist, and within the context of its time, I think the original SMP Bond watch fares particularly well. In horological terms, chronometeric terms, and design terms. Few watches of the time dared so greatly.... and actually executed.
    I suppose I view Rolex's virtual paralysis as a negative thing. As you noted, the current Submariner would likely be little different from that found in the late 80's had Omega not forced the Crown's hand.

    • @ID-Guy

      Very good comment and thank you DBruh! I should have mentioned a line that I too think it was a very bold move to introduce the new line in the 90's. And we're even seeing it today! The variety of watches that Omega has on offer is unreal. And then comparing the lineup to Rolex with the Explorer 2, the GMT, the Submariners...It's a very interesting case study to look at. Someone did mention Stagnation in the comments and I think that would fit the way Rolex brings out virtually the same watch every year. It's quite sad really

    Rolex never aspired to be omega and omega shouldn’t aspire to be Rolex. Omega is always trying to compare to Rolex. It’s small penis syndrome. Omega has history and watchmaking prowess in its own right. Omega can stand on its own merits.

    I don't care for the bezel, it's a look a lot of cheaper watches use. I wonder how your design with a coin edge bezel would look like? I'd also like to see them move to a sapphire or ceramic insert over the dated aluminum kind. The band is too fancy again like a cheaper watch design.

    The intro music doesnt fit at all with your brand. Its some ghetto gangster music, then you have excellent refined content throughout the rest of the video. Why ????

    I have both the master coaxial like the 1957 and the 2018 blue on steel smp. They are the only two left in my collection. Love them both. Was surprised though with your mock up. when i saw it was like... oh #$%&! thats nice! only thing i lust for now to make my collection a 3 watch collection would be a green hulk but with a 70hr power reserve if they even make one.

    I have a hard time appreciating Omega designs. To me, especially recently, they've tried hard to be more bold than Rolex, ignoring history and convention, and tending more toward trendy. Some of their design elements are just ridiculous, like in this example, the textured dial and that He valve at 10:00 which nobody will ever use. This also results in a product line that has no commonality to it and looks confused. The SM 300 and Speedmaster are both iconic Omega sports watches yet they have nothing in common, and you'd be forgiven for thinking they were entirely different brands.
    Compare this to Rolex, who have always been conservative, perhaps to a fault, but there is a common design language throughout. The result is a Rolex always looks like a Rolex. You know one when you see it. I think this may be of more value to their brand than trying to make an impression of being cutting edge. I guess they leave that to Tudor. Perhaps Omega and Tudor are the real matched competitors when it comes to design.
    By the way, I'm really loving your recent videos more oriented toward design analysis. Keep them coming.

    I can't decide between blue and black in the 2018 Seamaster Pro. (Maybe going to see one will do the trick.) … What bothers me about the blue, is that in some photos online, it looks really off coloured. Especially flash photography, but then flash can mess with colour. (However sometimes it looks off coloured to me in bright sunlight photos.) In promo shots of the blue one, it looks luscious and rich coloured, with varying blue depths of colour.

    Other than personal taste on aesthetics, the real achilles heel for the SMP is the scalloped bezel.....absolutely useless when diving! So much so i sold mine....coin edge is so much better, hence why the later planet ocean’s adopted the design....

    Competition doesn't necessarily lead to innovation. Often leads to monopolies, stagnation.

      Very true, Eric. I think I was speaking in a bit of an umbrella term, looking more towards the big names in any industry. But Apple and Samsung is a good example of what you mean and I'd have to agree with you. Thanks for the comment, man!

    • @myscrnnm
      @myscrnnm 5 років тому

      I don't think you understand what those terms mean. In a market dominated by a monopoly, there is no opportunity for competition. Competition means no stagnation because competitors are forced to innovate and stand out against other companies.

    I have to say yuck on your design. I bought the watch because of no numerals on the dial. I bought it because it was technically superior then the Rolex Submariner in every way. I bought the Seamaster 300 for the controversy of hands, bezel and helium escape valve. I bought it because finally a bracelet that doesn’t use the Submariner style on every other watch made out there. It doesn’t look out of date at all because it still looks like nothing else and I love it for that uniqueness.

  • @faheemwyne5098
    @faheemwyne5098 5 років тому

    The mock up is ugly & I have to disagree about the dated image. I would say it's the submariner that looks dated. The 90's seamaster just got everything right including the helium escape valve. And finally when you see anyone wearing the Rolex one of the first thoughts is "Fake"

  • @luispadilla2212
    @luispadilla2212 5 років тому

    Dated?! Rolex has been dated since I can remember and the only reason they better their watches is thanks to Omega which to me make better watches. If you move the HB and the crown guards then you end up with an AQUA TERRA. which in my opinion are more beautiful than any Rolex and with out the stupid waiting games.
