First episode in my "Do You Really Need" Series covering a handful of our favourite types / styles of watches.
The Status of the GMT / Dual Time Watch has really climbed in recent years.
Why do you find them to be such great pieces? 🥃

As you noted in the Vid, GMTs are stylish, colorful, and purposeful. I have always admired a GMT. Do I need one - NO! Would I like to have one - YES! My highly desired GMT is a 1999 Explorer II.

The GMT is an aspirational piece and that is enough for the brands. I don’t dive and I don’t travel but I have watches that can do both. Buy what you love and wear it in good health.

    • @localheroEd
      @localheroEd 9 днів тому

@@thatguy6111 has covered aspirational so I’ll just add the practical. You’re more likely to need it in today’s global world than every other complication.
I considered a GMT a while back but the reality is my family, friends and work are all within my local time zone. Probably why visually I prefer those where the fourth hand can be hidden behind the main hour hand.
I’m guessing the chronograph is episode two of this series. Countdown timers, very useful day to day, especially with an audible end, much less need for timing.

@@localheroEdmakes a great point that there are 3 (?) different types of GMT, each meeting a slightly different nuanced “need”. The most common perhaps being a 4th hand rotating every 24 hours (for pilots and spelunkers?); the 4th hand that can hide under the main hour hand (more understated?); the JLC Reverso where you can flip over to another timezone (and/or the same time zone but a different watch dial).

“Need” is a dangerous word around any of my watches. I have 1 traveler’s GMT that I consider my “vacation” and business travel watch. @@ID-Guy Yes it is! And I get why you brought it up. I often wonder how many chrono owners out there really know what all the various scales are for and how to use them. I try to avoid trends for that very reason. Its a direct indicator that a particular niche is now being flooded with low information consumers. More importantly, they are happy being low information. That doesn’t mean I won’t own a GMT or other fashion trend. But I will own it to suit my needs (see, now I’ve used that word!) and not own 5 of them to show off on a watch forum.

Like ID Guy suggested, watch brands use the GMT feature to add color, and with more people traveling overseas or working with teams in other countries, it is a practical function to have. ID Guy featured mainly GMT watches in this video, and also included several World Timers in the video. If you do travel to other countries and cross multiple time zones in one trip, or work with teams in Asia & Europe, the World Timer is a very practical watch since you can see cities in 24 time zones at a glance. There is a wide variety of watch brands that do make a World Timer at different price points. From Frederique Constant to Breitling to Omega to Patek Philippe, you may find the World Timer format more practical to wear.

By this logic, "Do you really need a DIVE watch"? With wet suit extensions that create oversized buckles and straps... Actually, in today's business / international world a GMT offers lots of usable functionality. As you mentioned tracking the 'home-corporate' office in a remote work session, traveling, tracking a loved one traveling without you, keeping tabs of the Formula 1 season (what time is it at this weeks track?), and an hour bezel, like a dive bezel, can be used to track the passage of time in an hour-eccentric fashion. Finally, even in it's sync'd to local time, for those in EU or military it gives you the 24HR/Military time at a glance. Cheers!

The second time zone is a decorative function for me and I love how the watch looks but the extra hand is also a negative as it makes reading the time less legible.

I travel world wide on hunting, diving, fishing, and on general adventures. I always wear a watch, that matches the adventure, based on where I'm going. I choose a specific watch, by the features, that best watch suit that adventure. As time does not stand still, my abilities for different adventures have changed as I age. I am always reminded of past adventures, every time I look at the watch I'm wearing, during the course of an average day. The minds eye is amazing, in that a simple look at my watch, can bring back specific memories of a locations, sights, sounds and smells. I remember what I was doing when I wore that particular watch. A GMT, whether a simple Casio World Timer or the 'brand who shall not be named', is one of those complications that bring back thoughts of where I was, when I was wondering, what those at home were doing at that same time. While your assertion has some truth to it, not everyone if projecting their dreams by owning a complication they may never need or use. But even if they were, what's wrong with dreaming. The GMT wasn't invented without it a dream.

I take somewhere in the region of 150 - 175 flights a year and although mainly in Europe, I stopped tracking the alternative times after a while - being frank, my basic understanding of addition/substraction and fundamental ability to read a clock/watch, meant it’s not that useful.
Still think they are generally great to have, for the reasons you outline - it’s far more about it being interesting than practical - so symbolic of mechanical watches in general.

If you have ever had a colleague in another time zone call you in the middle of the night because they chose not to subtract or add the number of time zones between you or put together a call among three or more people in different parts of the world, you know that some type of “GMT” watch can be useful. You may know from my missive on WoE that I have lived and will probably always live in Zulu time. A simple 12hr rotating bezel rather than a dive bezel is a practical answer to that need. Not really a complication, just a quick way to check a different time zone. Regardng the point of the video, I agree that the GMT complication with the multi-colored bezel remains a terrifically attractive design. And now with the new Seiko and Miyota movements even an affordable design.

I love my Formex Reef GMT. I do not reaaally use the GMT function - the hand is set to the same time as my local time, but some years ago I used to have 2nd time = british time because I love the country :D
    - But the GMT hand is smaller than on most others and does not impede quick readability in everyday use.
Plus, you can easily change the bezel to a divers bezel and have all your daily timing (pizza, boiling potatos etc :D ) when at the same time maintaining that GMT functionality, bec the 24h indices are not only found on the GMT bezel, but also printed onto the dial.

I'm here with a casio W-59, maybe considering Sinn 556i or Longines Spirit 37mm
But for now, deleting Rolex off my wrist list and going into watch rehab with the Casio on wrist (which by the way is a perfect little alternative to the F91W. Better in every way)
P.s. i see what you're saying about colour and design of GMT watches...i guess my taste is pretty plain... Explorer 2 is a very cool watch... really is.... but I'm trying to be a one / two watch human, so maybe id choose other more versatile pieces over the Explorer

Need. Never. That goes with any watch. Want? Perhaps.
For me, I just like the look of it. That's it. I honestly never use the GMT feature.
Even when I was traveling way more several years back, I never needed a GMT watch. Just a watch.
For me, once I get to a new destination, I set the time to new local time (which is actually not hard and a pleasure to manipulate my watch to be in sync with a new locale) and forget where I've been and where I may be going next. If I'm going outside of my home, it's almost always for pleasure and not business. So, I never care to think about anywhere but where I am for the moment and the next couple of days (or weeks or however long I am away).
As such, I am still tempted by many current and future GMT models. However, I've come to accept it's no longer something I really want and may be a last collection filler if it ever comes to that.
That being said, I do own one GMT watch. A Glycine Airman Purist. It's a special and lovely design that really is all its own. Being the first commercially available GMT watch before Rolex, it is far overshadowed by the big hype watch which almost every other brand tries to follow in some way.
Being in Purist from, I also enjoy my Glycine because it tells time in 24-hr format. It's a different look and way of telling time compared to 99% of all standard 12-hr watches. The visual referencing between hour and minute hand over the dial is a refreshing change and gives me something different to look at and interpret the time.
Personally, I find a dive watch with a timing bezel and chronographs more useful for my lifestyle and I actually do use them on a near daily basis.

The affordability of the NH34 and Miyota 9075 must have had a lot to do with recent popularity, making the Tudor GMT look expensive. That watch was a revolution in price on introduction. Plus I work in banking dealing with clients across the US, so it will be useful to use the bezel to change time zones on the fly. Also I can use the bezel to time an hour with the minute hand or multiple hours with the GMT hand. So I will actually use the GMT function.

I have a Halios Fairwind with a 12-hour rotating bezel that I use in lieu of a GMT. I find it easier to use and to read the second time than with a GMT. The service costs also are significantly less for a three hander. The only drawback is that I have to remember the day/night adjustment, but frankly that's fairly evident. Also, although I generally would prefer a traveler's GMT over an office GMT, it mucks up setting the calendar function.
