There's an Aero Tale dev somewhere who's getting 1/1000 of a cent deposited into his account every time there's an in-game transaction. He's a billionaire, now.
So happy you played Villagers And Heroes :D this game is really great despite what people say about it and it will always stay in the hearts of those who love it ❤
I no longer play villagers and heroes but I played it for a couple of years (I had 5 maxed characters). The zones you were in are still pretty much considered the tutorial area. You need to complete the first quest line and defeat a surprisingly and disappointingly easy boss before getting to the main city. After this the game really takes off. The zones are larger and the quest line is generally fun/funny. The dungeons are challenging and fun to play. I was contacted by my old guild leader (now a developer for v&h) and was told they just increased max level so I don’t think it’s all that dead an mmorpg. My guild had 120 in it 2 years ago.
I've played villagers and heroes on and off every few years and when it first came out on steam the start of the game was very different much smaller zones, but the game has come a long way and I'm glad it's still around
In V&H, you know that theater in the main city? The mods would sometimes hold slam poetry events in there and give out cash shop items. That game had a really special community when I played it, not sure if it's still there but I hope so.
I love villagers and heroes. I found it randomly a year or two ago. There’s a player base and your guild is where your house is. It’s so active that yes, if you go absent, you can loose your spot.
Yea those players are merchants.. Some games don't need players to be merchants, they have a merchant mode where their character stays in place and collects the gold for you
I have been enjoying these videos. I downloaded Villagers and Heroes shortly after watching today and there were two other people on the starting area. :D
I played it years ago. It was pretty good. I don't even remember why I stopped. Probably just found something else to do. I had some pretty cool skins and gear.
While not completely dead, the player base is dwindling and the game I've logged the most hours in is Rift Online. Another one I haven't checked in a long time that was dying when I last checked was Fiesta Online
I tried villagers and heroes way back on my phone and I found it charming but didn’t enjoy playing a wow style game on my phone.. I had no idea there was a PC client ☺️ I’d give it another try!
Despite being abandoned by FunCom while they focus on Conan Exiles, there's still a small but dedicated player base of RPers in SWL. I still pop back and play now and then, and got my daughter interested in it. Free to play helps :D
I remember playing Villagers and Heroes in my mobile device. I was able to create a character that looked like Shrek and was able to ride a dragon. Hilarious
Great video. I barely remember playing The matrix Online and all I really remember is that is was glitchy and full of issues. A few dead MMO's you may want to review that are now fan made are Earth & Beyond and Star Wars Galaxies. Both have been running for approx 10-15 years now as fan run games and they work well but don't always have a ton of folks playing them.
This seems like a nice video! My only request is to raise the in-game audio a bit because every time you said something about a sound in the game and went silent so we could hear it, I still could barely hear it even with max volume. Like the sword swing and Guard Maynard's voice
Oh wow, I can’t believe Heroes of Dire is here. I played the developers first game The Infinite Black and it’s very very very specialist. There’s a hardcore of about 100 players worldwide that play that game. It’s a game I’ve played for 10-15 years. But HoD was another game they created, from a 1-2 man dev team. It just never took off. They did a kick starter type startup so many players put in £ to get gold so that’s how there are so many guilds. :P
Such a fun video idea! I'd love to see you check out Florensia. It's even in the short intro sequence though i can't find any videos in which you play it!
I played Villagers and Heroes for a bit. I still remember the name of the quest "malicious miscreant" which is what I call my kids almost every day. The faces of the animals weirded me out though.
If youve never checked out mabinogi you definitely should, its been around since 2006 and has never been popular in the west but has amazing character customization, THOUSANDS of hours of content even if about half of it is obsolete now, a class system that lets you use every skill in the game at any time with bonuses to certain skills, multiple pet systems, an upcoming update to take it from 2006 graphics to unreal engine 5, and a small but dedicated active community
I did NOT expect to see Florensia on this list LOL OMG That was the first I ever truly got into. It was my gateway into "real" gaming, been a gamer for 10+ years since then. So nostalgic!!
4:25 Guild Wars 2 is a tab target game that has an optional Action Camera toggle, but it's unbound by default and buried in the keybinds menu lol. They also don't tell you about it.
The prices in Aero look to be how many AC, you even popped up a "buy AC" window during this vid that showed actual dollars spent. For example you would need to buy the 25000AC which costs $14.99 to be able to buy an outfit that costs 14,999 AC. The ruby icon after the item price indicates that it costs AC and not dollars.
Heroes of Dire seems like it was heavily inspired by Heroes of Might and Magic. Out of all games from this video, this one was the only one that seemed promising
I've been looking for more Turn-based mmos to cover so a huge thank you for finding Heroes of Dire! I would love to get some people and cover the game and see what the content is like with some numbers. Let me know if this is something anyone is down for, seems like a lot of chaotic fun. Solid video like always!

Nice project man, going through dead game always hit nostalgia and create more question than we had in the beginning at the same time. Great narrative, I wish you success in your youtube journey!
I feel like Aeon Tales "playerbase" is probably mainly compromised of game devs having accounts and being simply logged in at the starter town and possibly nearby towns to make players think there's a lively audience, keeping them drawn for longer than they should be.
The heroes of dire song is "El dorado" By thomas bergersen/Two steps from hell. That took me back because I used to listen to their albums in Highscool.

You never played Guild Wars 2? You can change to action mode too, you just need to bind the key to toggle it. Btw, Villager & Heroes wasn’t a mobile first game. The PC version was released first.
I played Eldevin a lot a very long time ago. It used to be very popular. The eldevin city used to be full of people but seeing it now is actually really sad. Its a very enjoyable game. Please play more!
You can try ni no kuni cross worlds if u'll have some time. Very surprised global servers is still alive, so it will not fit in this particular video theme, but it will perfectly fit in something like "cringe online RPG that aggressively want you to spend money innit". It is a mobile game originally, but it has a pc client and most ppl playing it on both mobile and pc because it's hard to do pvp, raids, field bosses etc with uncomfortable mobile controls (but dailies and events is okay).
I remember when FlyFF was first released. It was filled to the brim with people. Could barely get into servers and they increase the amount of them because so many players were online. I downloaded it about 3 years ago maybe after not playing in over a decade when I found League of Legends and the game is a ghost town now except for the bot player shops. It’s sad to see games die like this. It’s almost eerie and haunting.
I used to play villagers and heroes when it was still pretty new. The reason it usually doesn't feel like a mobile game is because it was ported to mobile well after they originally launched it. It did however have a browser version if I'm not mistaken but they had to abandon that because newer versions of the engine didn't support that.
Lol I remember testing so many different MMORPGs in the late 00s and early 10s, all were just cheap WoW copies at the end of the day. Can't remember one exception. You had to go to MMORPGs released before WoW to get something different.
Heroes of dire had a dedicated playerbase for a while but the devs moved on from this project to another game called infinite black or void or something and eventually people just trickled out of the game. Also it is a game that has open world pvp with a reincarnation system for power so as a group gets alot of power they dominate and push others out of the game.
This sounds dumb but if u look at the old school runescape grand exchange scene in the beginning 0:13 of the video i see my character cooking lobsters haha thats totally me with the rune armour and golden chefs hat bottom left of counter hahahahahahah i thought my boots hat and cape were swagged out
these type of abandoned MMOs reminded me of a particular MMO i and lots of other players used to love playing, AVABEL online, it was such an incredible game of its time with lots of unique and unorthodox classes as well as a SAO like map where it's floor based, there are no fixed objectives where you'd need to go to a quest hall to actually pick up a quest and there are seasonal or weekly world bosses where multiple players need to come together in order to defeat, it was a fun time, the lower levels such as floor 1, you'd see noobs trying to grind and top tier veteran players flexing around with their god level gears. well all things must come to an end, the game became linear where there is no more quest hall and you have a fixed objectives and an annoying marker that will not go away, and just last year i tried revisiting AVABEL online and the once Floor 1 bustling with life and player activity is now a quiet dead map, no more players just mobs
8:40 I don't think there are actually losing pennies. In many non english speaking countries when they want to write a number in the thousands they use a dot rather than a comma. For example if you go to Italy and you see a car priced at eight thousand euros it wouldn't be writen as "8,000 euros", they would write it as "8.000 euros", otherwise it would be read as "8 euros". Something to keep track when buying stuff in foreign countries. It seems most MMOs here died out from losing popularity or the too many bots add on, like it seems is happening on Aero Tales and Heroes of Dire. Villagers and Heroes seems to be the best of this video so far.
@Waydots For Aero World the shop wasn't using direct pricing. The prices were in gems. It used decimals instead of commas. So 14.999 is 14,999. This is common outside the US.
I know you said you don't like turn based tactical, but for some odd reason this reminds me I'd like to see you try Atlantica online. played it waaaaaay back like in middle school
Not sure if Perfect World Online or Shaiya are still up but you could try those. Mostly recommending for a nostalgia kick, haven''t played them in ~15 years.
We are building an MMO, It's very likely it will end up in your videos :D To get players to keep playing is so hard, but our crazy dreams keeps us developing games!
I played Heroes of Dire and it was a lot of fun with the pvp and guild halls but the problem was the combat a big fight could take an hour+ and I think I just simply got bored and stopped playing. You could even claim parts of the map for your guild it was very complicated game with a lot going on. Another game to look at similar to this would be STASH if you haven't already looked into that one.
Please try Grand Fantasia, I have played it for 6 years since 2008. You should get the version that’s not on steam as that one is a remade version from the company above the maker. ( or do if too hard)
Can I recommend a small indie mmo called "Broken Ranks"? It's got a dark fantasy vibe with a very bizarre combat. Combat basically involves a game of rock paper scissors, tied to a stamina system like a souls game. I've played it on and off for a while, but it would probably make for a decent video just because of how unique it is.
Villagers and Heroes looks way too passably good. Ill go years without thinking of WoW then see or hear something that makes me feel like an addict again. Those clips combined with the music got me craving collecting candles from kobolds again.
I remember being so interested with Eldevin back in early 2008/09/10 ( can't remember the exact date) when they announced they were doing an mmorpg. I think as the years went by I kinda forgot about the game. Still i looks neat, maybe I would've played the game back in 2014.
Never played WoW myself. Not only was it prohibitively expensive, but I did not care at all for the aesthetics. My early 2010s F2P WoW Clone of choice was RIFT. Goddamn that game was pretty. Must have taken 10,000 screencaps of it. Played it a few years ago & it was a ghost town. I just had to see the beautifully spooky land of Morban again. Anyway, like I said, it's a ghost town. You're soloing raids more often than not, & the low player base completely nurfed the giant world invasions. Check it out some time.
Villagers and horses brings nostalgia every time i log in ,(usually once per year) becsus i when i teleport to one of the biggest player made villages i see my name in the contribution bords cuz i helped build that village like a decade ago 😂😂😂❤❤❤
Runes of Magic is a great diamond in the rough. I'm not sure if you're tried that, but they have the BEST Guild vs. Guild system in any MMO and also the build Guild system in-general. It is P2W, but it used to be a bit better back in the day. I lead the largest guild on my server when I was younger. I also loved the open/free PvP. Unfortunately, many of these things require more players, but eh. I still wanted to give props to the game.
I didn't get really far in the game, because the graphics card i had at the time couldn't handle certain areas with large amounts of players running around, but I have some good memories of some of the quests & landscapes.

Guildwars did the action combat keybind first, can go from more targeting style, or a crosshair action type.
Look at Garden Paws. It used to he such a fun and cute MMO but then the devs just randomly stopped updating it and the community fell apart.
Aero Tale - wouldn't the 14.999 possibly be the switch of period to comma, as is done around the world? does 14,999 make more sense
The Character Screen in Eldevin reminds me of Dungeon Master on the Amiga .
Day 1 of asking for Dragon Nest game that no one really plays anymore because of the devs
I remember being so interested with Eldevin back in early 2008/09/10 ( can't remember the exact date) when they announced they were doing an mmorpg. I think as the years went by I kinda forgot about the game. Still i looks neat, maybe I would've played the game back in 2014.
0:58 "The trailer looks half interesting" LMAO xD
Never played WoW myself. Not only was it prohibitively expensive, but I did not care at all for the aesthetics. My early 2010s F2P WoW Clone of choice was RIFT. Goddamn that game was pretty. Must have taken 10,000 screencaps of it. Played it a few years ago & it was a ghost town. I just had to see the beautifully spooky land of Morban again. Anyway, like I said, it's a ghost town. You're soloing raids more often than not, & the low player base completely nurfed the giant world invasions. Check it out some time.
Rift! I was in the exact same boat as you. Those 5 fps rounds of conquest were pure chaos and I loved it.
Villagers and horses brings nostalgia every time i log in ,(usually once per year) becsus i when i teleport to one of the biggest player made villages i see my name in the contribution bords cuz i helped build that village like a decade ago 😂😂😂❤❤❤
I mean, if you look at gas stations they do they same thing with pricing. You think you're paying 3.09 for gas but its actually 3.099
Damn, aero tales really just took deagon nest character creation screen xD
Actually heroes of dire turn based style is like final fantasy tactic.. and disgaea.. its fun..
Yes please do a review of Villagers and Heroes!
please try eden eternal. thats some childhood mmo
I played the alpha and beta version of Eldevin and honestly back in the time it was pretty good.
It’s definitely not a bad game. Interested in doing a deep dive later on
You can cover Bounty Bay Online, you'll be a first person to record a video on this game in like 10 years
