  • Right now, at this very moment, we have three Bursts under one roof, and we want to tell you about them. The Burst evolved out of Gibson's very first solid-body guitar, the 1952 Les Paul. Issued initially as a Gold Top, the Les Paul got a new look in 1958, when Gibson introduced a new model with a sunburst finish: the Les Paul Standard. Our '59 Burst, '60 Burst, and '60 "Scarface" Burst are excellent examples of this landmark guitar.
The Burst evolved out of Gibson's very first solid-body guitar, the 1952 Les Paul. Issued initially as a Gold Top, the Les Paul got a new look in 1958, when Gibson introduced a new model with a sunburst finish: the Les Paul Standard. Coloring the solid Honduran mahogany bodies with aniline dye, Gibson's Les Paul Standards featured a deep red hue that, with time, would react to ultraviolet light and other environmental conditions to bleed, fade, and otherwise change. Our '59 Burst, '60 Burst, and '60 "Scarface" Burst are excellent examples of this landmark guitar and beautifully illustrate how each early Burst is different from any other, both visually and sonically. While the Les Paul was changing with almost every year since it's initial release, the debut of the Les Paul Standard in 1958 is perhaps the most significant and substantial change to the legendary model, made more so by the 1957 introduction of the humbucker.

      Lucas Parks
Yes, Jimmy Page used a tele aka the dragon tele on led zep 1 but in April of 1969 he got his famous #1 1959 les Paul burst that he used on everything from led zep 2 to their last album and live. I did use a tele on the stairway solo and a couple other songs. But if you watch any clips from the song remains the same show at MSG in 1973 he uses that famous les Paul he also played a strat on In The Evening on the In Through The Out Door album. But mostly his les Paul. If your wondering about amps and effects he used a Marshall Plexi live and smaller combo amps in the studio. For effects he used a Echoplex Tape Echo Delay and fuzz or overdrive he also used phaser and chorus.

This is a wonderful tribute to the 58-60 Les Pauls with some great song choices "Ramble On" "Waiting For An Alibi" "In The Light" and the tone on "Hideaway" absolutely nails it, when I was a 16 year old all the guitarists I admired played one of these incredible instruments. They are rightly hailed as the Holy Grail of electric guitars. Thank you to all CME for this video.

If I could only have one of these bursts for my very own.. It would obviously make me a better player automatically without the hours of practice or more importantly- the natural desire and passion for music that youth once provided me with seemingly endless bounds. Decent tone from these three guys too.. Gonna have to check out that Marshall SV20C in person soon.

It's only in recessions (the US have entered one probably, confirmations are always after the fact) that we realize all the hoopla and hyperbole surrounding vintage guitars (let alone bursts!). Bad moment to have so many of them in inventory. Emerald City Guitars have like six unsold... ouch. This being said, I love this CME store , one of my favorites by far. I hope they unload them soon. The guitars will come back to their value in the next upwards economic cycle, so I hope some buyers see this as an opportunity.

JSpic I hope not. I hope their value drops to the point that performing musicians might be able to play them live and maybe have an impact like some of the legends that have owned them before them. Burst values are absolutely ridiculous, they're just guitars.

I lived in Rockford for a few years, and I didn’t know about CME until right before I had to move away. But I went and spent a couple hours there just the one time. I had so much fun, and got to play and hold things I never have anywhere else. My first full Marshall stack. I think it’s fine the bursts cost so much, but I played a reissue Clapton beano that day, which was 8 grand. I thought it really really average. My friend bought a studio faded that visit, and I liked it a lot more than the “old “ beano guitar. But that’s just subjective, it was probably good. Doesn’t matter, it was a lot of fun and everyone was very friendly. 👍🎶

One of the interesting things about PAFs (to me anyway) is that they're *not* high-output pickups in terms of overall level, yet they push just the right frequencies to get amps all hot & bothered. This quality seems to be the most elusive one when it comes to modern PAF repros.

Nice video, really, but I'm always disappointed when people fail to mention that Keith Richards was the first Rock and Roll guitarist to use one. A 59 he bought used in 64. Clapton is said to have used Keith's. Keith then sold his to Mick Taylor. Great video though!

these guitars are great. the reissues and luthier replicas do get pretty close though, like 90%+ there.
