Pink Floyd were progressive rock in the truest sense of the word. Progressing what rock music and music in general could be, pushing the medium forward in a way few ever have in the 20th century.

They covered up lots of genres including psychedelic rock and garage rock, but they also did thrash metal, synth-pop and even hip-hop to jazz.

Heavy Metal didn't exist in 1969 (the year of The Nile Song) and The Trial is much more Rock Opera than Heavy, I don't think Pink Floyd ever played any Heavy Metal.

Just because it was before Sabbath doesn't mean it automatically wasn't Metal. As for The Trial, the overall genre is indeed Rock Opera, but the ending riff is very heavy and menacing, particularly for Floyd.

PF has got lots of it, across several records. They were quite "effective" in their Musique Concrète, in the words of Doug Helvering.
Ummagumma is strangest PF album. Sysyphus, part 2 has a lot of harsh noise elements there
