This is a video on public urinals in Amsterdam. More specifically the plaskrul and the urilift, a urinal designed by a dutch company that comes out of the ground.

As a drunk British male who has visited Amsterdam 4 times I want to apologise for our behaviour… and also say thank you for the urinals
Ofcourse there is the stereotype and there is the good old European rivalry which makes the brits a good target for neighborly jokes. But don't let the jokes fool you into thinking that most sane Dutch people actually hate all British people or those of a other nationality. As in most places sane people understand that the actions of a certain subgroup don't reflect the behavior of all those in the larger groups. And it is not like drunk men with the germans, polish, dutch or any other nationality don't cause problems.

This is a ridiculously amazing animation for a subject such as this. I mean it is so aesthetic and so well put together. It is also medically and scientifically accurate as alcohol is a relaxant which drops blood pressure and according to the law of pressure, a drop of fluid volume due to urination, also corresponds to a drop in blood pressure like a water hose losing water volume, thereby, the pressure is weaker. It is amazing.
Your bladder isn't connected to your bloodstream, so emptying your bladder won't reduce your blood pressure proportionally.

I saw an even funnier one on TV years ago. I believe that show was also specifically about The Netherlands' public urinals. At a music festival, a really drunk and stupid guy who couldn't read the Dutch signs took the tablets as a snack provided, and the piss in the communal urinal as free beer. It was hilarious! But only because it was so very realistically done.
I realize now that the signs would always be in English as well, so it had to be staged and not real, but at the time I didn't know that. It was so well done that it seemed believable. I did then and still do always have a healthy degree of scepticism, but I enjoyed it for what it was worth.

I know this video is partly a joke, but as Dutch person I can confidently say that Sweden does public bathrooms so much better than the Netherlands ever will. They're clean, accessible to all and they're also everywhere. There's usually even toilet paper, making it much more hygienic than urinals. Of course, there's also a difference in culture that's needed in order to keep such public bathrooms clean, but that's just another thing I appreciate about Sweden!
When I was younger and often went partying I really hated it that every shitty bar or club would change money to piss. Usually with some cranky toiletjuf.
Don't know about Sweden, but in other countries it's illegal to serve drinks and not have a free option to piss.

The piss curls are the ones being replaced by the newer models mentioned later in the video: futuristic out-of-the-ground toilets for the futuristic year 2023 ;P
Curls date back to the late 19th century when A'dam wanted the moats cleaner and less spreading diseases. They are connected to the sewer system that was build around that time.
Before all was dumped in the moats, but that caused so many outbreaks that a 'perfume' car was introduced to collect the buckets with human excrement, which brought it out of the city.

Was in Amsterdam in 1980 and stayed on Bloemgracht Street, someone fell in the canal when we were there, it was early morning, he was fished out with no harm done. He was lucky he was with other people when it happened. We heard people using the canal frequently during our stay.
Great video! I'm a woman and I visited Amsterdam two weeks ago. My boyfriend appreciated the many possibilities for him to urinate... I, on the other hand, constantly struggled to find a toilet. I honestly wondered why there weren't as many options for women and whether Dutch women are bothered by it or not.
Urinals are just really easy. No flushing required, inherently more private than sitting down, no contact needed so hygiene requirements are way lower. Even if you design a standing toilet for women these issues are all at least partially at play.
@@group555_ I totally get the practicality and how it’s a simple solution for 50% of the population. It's a great idea and I totally support it. I just think that there should be free and public toilets with easy access for everybody and everywhere and that having to take a piss and shit should be seen as a human act. I love that at least the urination part for men is solved in Amsterdam, but I would appreciate solutions for the rest.
@@elisabethkulakov4863 those do exist as shown in the video but so far they aren't financially feasible to the same degree hence they'll be less common. Sadly someone has to pay to keep them going. I'm not disagreeing with your sentiment, just giving the main reason why.
If i have to imagine it is more of a problem of unisex urinals/toilets being not very cost efficient.
It wan't a decision between 100% of the population vs 50% of the population, but a decision between 50% of the population or 0% of the population.
Also if these toilets are there to prevent the drunkards from pissing in the river, they only really need to care about men, women were not going to piss in the river anyway, it takes a men to be that idiotic.
In my country the solution to the pissing problem has been to force all establishments to offer pissing for free to not customers, since if there is enough people for it to be a problem, there is going to be establishments open to sell stuff to that people, so we only need to force them to have bathrooms and offer them for free to everyone as a cost of doing business in such a centric place. More efficient than public bathrooms and cheaper as well, at least for the government, the cost is instead passed on the restaurants/bars than then pass it to their clients, mostly tourists that are the actual cause of the problem.
As others have stated this was made to solve people pissing in the river and women aren’t doing that in the first place so their an afterthought that came about

"Why you can piss on the street in Amsterdam"...if you've got a peen! I'm glad you covered the case of the woman who was fined for public urination. It's typically Dutch that the government said she must pay the fine after all. As a transplant to The Netherlands, and as a female who often needs to piss while in the big city, I've found that women (and guys unfortunate enough to have to poo) have to 1) find a public toilet, and 2) PAY for the privilege of using said toilet. Not fair, not equitable as far as peeing is concerned! I'm looking forward to seeing the urilifts in action...and especially looking forward to seeing how many of them actually cater to women. Will they be free for both sexes? Hmmmmm
I don't understand why they can't make a urinal that both women and men could use, all they'd have to do is make the pan extend out a little more so it could fit between a woman's legs, then you could go either facing forward, or bent over facing back. Anything a woman could pee in will be covered in shit. No person will want to use it.
It's extremely sexist that men have such an easier time going to the toilet. But that's mostly because it's infinitely easier for men to pee somewhere than it is for women, you can't change that by sheer will.
I do advocate for more public womens toilets. Maybe even mandatory public service so every citizen is on a roster of cleaning them. You'd only be called like once a year or less, but it might just make people behave a lot better. Or pay the fine to have municipal services do it for you.

I went to Amsterdam last year and really struggled with finding toilets. I googled locations of public toilets but everything that came up was paid toilets. I also of course heard it was illegal to urinate in the canals but I didn't realise those weird metal structures were for peeing in public. I would trek the entire length of the city to get back to the hostel to use the toilet there, then trek back and continue whatever i was doing, it was a weird experience

When you go make sure to take a train to Rotterdam, Delft, Leiden, The Hague or Haarlem. Many people make the mistake of going to the tourist traps which is the centre of Amsterdam only.

The plaskrul is such a good example of "Dutch Design", one of a handful "national" traditions of design that is globally dominant right now, together with scandanivian design, for example

In my dutch town, Enschede, two elevator urinals rise from the ground around the entrance of the Old Church, centrally located in the middle of the main square with nightlife
Why this is nifty is that it isnt just more hygienic and just better for air quality, but it's also saving the Old Church's sandstone walls from getting solved away by all the acidic piss.
Now instead of the largest public urinal of town, it is the largest single bike-rack as it gets 360° surrounded by meters upon meters of bicycles three times a week or so

I work at the DPA and this is a serious problem we face in the Netherlands. Way too many people die this way, so many that the government has issued signs to hang on the bridges and around the canals.

I saw urinals like these in Germany, and despite being conspicuousely public, they also seemed incredibly private. Very good design.
They first 'poped up' in the city of Groningen (NL). We get many German tourists. I'm sure that a German city planner saw the design and copied it.

Public urinals seem like a nice idea, but as a Torontonian, I feel like a city loses some of its unique charm when you aren't constantly on the look out for puddles of human urine and piles of human feces, as well as the people leaving them, around every corner. I guess I'm just a romantic that way 🤷♂
don't public urinals/toilets solve that problem though, so people use them instead of pissing on the streets and in rivers or canals

Lavatories abroad are a confusing matter. Now I know should we add them to our travel bucket lost they've got us covered to protect from drowning or needing to frantically find a facility in another language.

Public urination is illegal in Amsterdam today. Historically, public urination in the Red Light District, particularly around Oudekerksplein and Warmoesstraat, was more tolerated, especially at night. However, the city is cracking down on it, increasing patrols and enforcement. Public urinals were also present here but have been largely removed. There are plenty of Cafes and restaurants with bathrooms.

Good to know these exist... the last time I went to Amsterdam i found myself in a spot of trouble on the last day - I completely ran out of money, so went to try find an ATM that would let me use my overdraft, and got lost. It was meant to be a quick trip so I left my phone in the hostel, but I quickly got disoritentaed in Amsterdam's streets. I eventually became desperate to take a shit, and I couldn't find a free public toilet anywhere 😢 i found some toillets but they were all 1EUR and i didnt have one. If i had my phone i probably could have found these urinals or at least a mall, but I didnt so I ended up wandering into a posh restaurant and sneaking into theirs lol
