- Troubleshooting Mercedes 2013 GL450 x166 Airmatic Air Shocks, Valve block body, air compressor. Thought both low shocks meant bad valve block body, turns our it was weak compressor. Icarsoft m2 works for 2007-2012 Gl450 but not for 2013 - 2018 GL450 Airmatic.

I love my car , it’s solid for sure. My Air Compressor on the driver side made a loud pop sound , it scared me into the next world!

thanks - DIY guy myself - Lack of information is usually the only reason we can't fix it. I had owned a 2008 and had to replace the compressor-- dealer diagnosed. You diagnosed this one - same thing mine is doing- I'll replace it this week and let you know--Thanks again

All that was wrong was the valve body, and honestly it wasn't all that bad to change. I completely think a scan would be the right thing to do though. It's just nice to have that certainty and not go through all the trouble. Everything is back and running now though so that's what matters.
@@tahurl Hi Dan! Your video is still helpful to this day! I have a similar issue but it all started after I got a flat passenger rear tire. I took it to a mom and pop shop to change that tire. They jacked it up. But when they finished I watched as they let it down really fast and I can hear air escape and my gl got really low. I didn’t think nothing of it at the time. I just raised it and drove off. But noticed later my ride was getting bumpy. So now as long as the car is parked it stays up. But once I drive.. it lowers (I get the “malfunction” screen) on its own and ride becomes bumpy. Also, If I keep trying to raise it - I get “ cooling down” . Can you please attempt to pin point exactly what the issue is. I don’t want to order the wrong part. I took it to the dealer and they did not locate issue (worst dealership ever!) and now my trunk won’t close completely oddly enough. Blamed it on the battery which I changed (didn’t fix any issue. Please assist, your assistance is greatly needed and appreciated! 🙂
@@keeg1 all the scan will tell you is the level of elevation of each sensor, or how long the pump run; but good luck with the valve block that's why when it's about the air suspension the best way is to change everything at the same time if the car has gone for years without changing these parts because they will be going on after another that's why the dealer force people to change everything hence hiking the cost of doing it at the dealership. because air suspension parts should be considered like tires they only last for a certain time before replacement is needed.

My 2013 GL Air Suspension Compressor (ASC) was intermittently rattling and then sounded like a small jackhammer as it cycled. I'm replacing my ASC with an Arnott P3258. Thanks for this video.

I went to that same craziness in my 2008 GL450 as well, since airbags start failing they will keep doing it one after another; I replaced all 4 bags, compressor, rear level sensors, and valve block just to have a piece of mind; I think when I removed the front ones I messed up the link and the car was making a knocking noise when driving over potholes, replaced both front links as well now my car ride like a plane on the clouds. Now I am dealing with a steering issue that is giving me hard times, replaced the power steering, flush the steering fluid and the issue isn't completely resolved yet, since my car doesn't have a speed sensitivity valve I am pretty sure it's the rack and pinion and that is a little bit too challenging but if the dealer quote is too crazy I'll go ahead a take up on the challenge just like I did for all the other issues I have had so far and do it myself.
Is power steering leaking??
Power steering rack was leaking where steering rod connected.. I just filled monthly for 2 years.. the I said I'll risk it and started 50% lucas power steering stop leak... 2 years later still works great... only have to top off every 6 months... so my point is wondering if putting thicker fluid may help with steering issue?
@@tahurl Hello Dan; guess what about my power steering issues; The 2008 GL power steering can't be diagnosed with the diagnostic tool it's completely mechanical and has no sensors; was driving and the cheap high-pressure hose that I bought from Amazon at $40.00 just busted and let all the oil out, as I said back then when I was going through those trials in my comment above; that episode alone, just made me believe more that my rack and pinion were out. But, the prospect of undergoing that hard job and expensive job made me retake some steps; remember I had replaced my power steering pump earlier with this new cheap pump from eBay, and also replaced the power steering high-pressure hose with a cheap one but that didn't solve the issue to a point it made me believe that my rack and pinion was the issue. But I decided to replace that new cheap pump 1st since I had driven over it after the hose busted without any oil for a couple of weeks. I decided this time to go with a used but OEM pump and I did use a cheap high-pressure power steering hose again but this time I made sure the angle of the curvature of the tip that plugged into the rack and pinion was correct that I had no issue to screw it into the banjo bolt on the pump. Cause the other one due to poor Chinese bootleg manufacture was bent wrong making it impossible to attach and screw the banjo bolt into the pump, instead of returning it I went ahead and bent it to force it to screw in that's why it busted after a few months of use leaking all the oil out. After I put everything back my power steering was working again like a charm; the lesson here is when you don't have enough money to buy new parts for the dealer get some good OEM parts from eBay stay away from these Chinese copies of Mercedes part that they sale as a universal replacement they will go out in less than 2 months or just don't work as they supposed to as it was in my case. used OEM is even better; original parts are ideal but sometimes they can be very costly. 2008 to 2013 MB are very pretty easy to do yourself but avoid these cheap parts.

Great video! I have a 2010 GL450 and the front 2 wheels sagged down overnight together with an Airmatic malfunction error on screen. The pump does not make any noise when I unlock the car or start it up so I assume the pump went out but could that cause the front 2 wheels to sag together over night, I am wondering if something else is bad too. Thanks!

The cooling down and malfunction is because your system is loosing air... l suspect your rear air bags have been damaged from the sudden drop ... inexpensive parts and very easy to change rear air bags...lilike $50 each..
Ps don't drive too long like this or you will burn out compressor...
@@tahurl Good morning Dan, and thanks so much for the immediate response! The dealership stated they didn’t see any air bag leaks (not sure they are correct) but do you think this could still be the case even though the entire car drops slowly over time while riding ? The back never drops alone . The car always drops evenly and it can sit forever and stay up without dropping once I raise it back up. But once I start driving it eventually drops evenly (malfunction screen) and the bumpy ride starts. Then I try to raise it back up immediately and it does but slowly and then I see the “cooling down” screen.
So could it just be the compressor or even the valve block ? Once you answer this , I’ll purchase what I need . So I thank you so much!
@@mr.c2115 of course hard to diagnose long distance... but if it all goes down together then I'm thinking its leaking back thru the compressor... so yes probable compressor..

I’m having this exact problem. I just replaced both air bags on the rear. When the vehicle is started it does lift up but after sitting for an hour or so the rear drops. I was told that the compressor was bad. Please help

Yes compressor was too weak... it has worked perfectly since I changed compressor.
Hi Dan. Thanks for the video. I have a 2015 GL500. Each time I start or shut the engine, I get a loud sort of air release sound from the front driver’s side, at times even when driving. I also have a knocking sound on the same side when going over humps or any small bump. What could this be? Your assistance will be highly appreciated.
There is a tube at the end of compressor that goes up the wheel well into a small filter... all compressors release air but when the tube breaks you can hear the air release.... as for knock I think that is a different issue...
Hey Dan I got a quick question.
I have a 2008 gl450 and every now and then there would be a buzzing sound, very loud, somewhere under the hood near the tire. Usually the sound would come for a second then leave. But now it’s been coming on and staying on for minutes, off and on. I also get every now and then a malfunction notification with the lift, but the bags were replaced not long ago. What’s your input on what’s going on?
Sometimes when compressor is going bad air is lost thru the compressor... can you take a video and post on youtube?

Is one side front lower than the other? Either a front air shock is bad or there is an air leak.. not sure cost to have someone fix since I always fixed myself... probable $400 -800 per shock..
2007 Mercedes Benz GL 450
Hey dan, was driving and heard a pop/knock where I believe the compressor is and minutes after ride started bouncing really bad, pulled over to see BOTH rear tires almost rubbing the wheel wells. I sprayed soapy water for leaks on bags and lines, saw nothing. Front bags are completely fine. Back right bag had been replaced recently.
Also found a plastic black screw cap and a silver piece that seems to have fell out of the compressor, I put it back in and still no response on the rear bags. Maybe I put the pieces back in wrong? anyways dont have a scan tool and dont know if i should replace the generator or valve block. Any help?
I have found usually the compressor... I have yet to run into a bad valve block.. Please let me know how it goes.

So I replaced the compressor and all but one shock went up.. I noticed that only one didn’t go up all the way at . The front left wheel didn’t sensor voltage was 1.73 while the other wheel level sensors well over 2.00 voltage.. does that mean the sensor is shot?
No I don't think so... does compressor go off or does it keep running like there is a leak? Sounds more like a leak in that shock
I own a 2014 GL550, I put a leveler tool on the back of the car and the bubble goes slightly to the left but still inside the middle lines. It appears that my right wheel well is sagging about 1inch. No trouble codes. Do you think that my air shock is about to go bad? Is there are way to re-calibrate the level sensors?
Probable need star system to recalibrate... if rear is off... as long as level sensors look good and are not bent probable time for rear bags... they are easy change and very inexpensive
Also for 1" I would just watch until it gets worst
What if it’s only the front tire area not lifting? But all other sides lift n pump just the front driver side was losing pump n then eventually didn’t lift anymore. Could it be the bag? This happened after getting new tires

I have 2008 Mercedes gl450. I had all air suspension airbags replaced twice already. Less than a year ago I replaced the compressor. Stupid me decided to add lowering links and all of a sudden I noticed that I was issues with the suspension. Needless to say I scanned my car with icarsoft obd and was getting 5508 major leak in the pressure line. After readying multiple forums. I decided that to tackle the valve block as it was the only original part on the car. Once I installed the valve block and tried to have the compressor raise the car.. the compressor would kick on for about a minute or so and then I got the malfunction error on my cluster and then it said cooling down compressor. I quickly scanned my car with the icarsoft and there was no more major pressure line leak. Also when I took off the air lines off the old valve block they still had air built up in all 4 airbags which were released when I removed the individual lines from the valve block. With this all said what’s your thoughts on it being the compressor too weak to raise the car?
Either level sensors or bad compressor! I went thru 3 defective Arnott compressors in one year....

Dan, the one wheel that is lower than the other 3 is going up/down just not the same level as the other 3. So there is no leak in that shock cause the compressor doesn’t stay on constantly. I am thinking it’s height level sensor for that particular wheel

My 2013 gl550 would randomly throw malfunction code on the dash. And the rear would drop and front stays up while driving. There’s one time all 4 corners dropped. It would not raise up. Already replaced valve block not too long ago. The compressor is complete silent at this point. I would think it’s the compressor is bad so when the valve body try to raise the car it just dump all the air back to the compressor.
What do u think it’s the cause

I am having the same problem with my 2013 gl450 mechanic said it the airbag i replace them now compressor dumps the air from time to time malfunction light come on after 10 minute of driving any diagnose to that problem ??????/

I have a 2012 E550 and it leans completely to the right, all 4 bags are new as well as the valve body. I do hear the compressor working and it will put air into the left side but the right side does not come up at all. Do you think it's a compressor issue?
Sounds like valve body not sending air to the right side... also need to make sure level sensors installed correctly..
@@tahurl valve body is new, I even swapped with an older one that did not have this issue and it was the same thing. All level sensors are ok.
Would not think its compressor if one side goes up... so wrong level signals or new air bags not holding air on one side....

I have a 2011 GL550 and I replaced the compressor twice. Both times it worked well but I would bet a sound like the compressor was letting off air stored up. It sounds like a semi-truck pressure relief sound. It doesn't do it all the time but from time to time it sounds like a semi truck letting off pressure. Can someone help guide me in the right direction
There is a air hose and filter connected to compressor if that hose is off or has a crack ..when air is released it sounds loud..
Dan knows his stuff. I agree with his diagnosis. I hope you didn't change your compressors, well, at least the second one (the first one was probably worn out) but your problem is an easy fix. I have a 2012 and love it. They are fine rides and they don't make them nearly as well anymore.

I’ve got a 2011 doing something very similar. I haven’t found any leaking bags, could the compressor just be bad without actually having a leak?
The air leaks back thru the compressor

Either you dial not working on passenger side or internal flap not opening for that side... are you sure right side heat dial is all the way up?
I have the same problem now. I have a 2014 GL450 and it usually give a big, loud "bang" and then both the back suspension goes down. It used to say Compressor cooling down. Now it just says malfunction. I already got the bags. Where did you get the valve and the compressor? and how much? it will help a lot. thanks!
Got compressor on amazon.com. I did not end up getting valve body.... you should change bags first... don't change compressor or valve body until after if it does not solve the problem..
hey Dan! So i just had finished replacing the bags like 10mins ago. Its up now. But the front suspension went way up. What could be wrong and whats the possible problem or remedy for this?

Dan You are absolutely right! I just checked now and the elbow of the sensor was facing the other way. Switched it and its now normal. Hopefully it will stay good. Thank you so much!

There are kits you can swap out for airmatic.
@@tahurl true I’ve seen those. I think I might try the icarsoft one more time. When I tried to check Airmatic it didn’t show. So your video gave me hope especially since you have two. I have the ML.

You have an air leak somewhere.. check fitting going into airshock

So the back of the vehicle lowered (sagged)...
Why would the compressor alone control just the rear air bags????
You would expect all corners to equally deflate.
To me this sounds like dirt or something causing some abnormal readings.
The next plausible issue would be the valve block.
The compressor is NOT married to any one set of airbags.
I would have expected a fix of
air bags
valve box
line connections
then compressor.
You must have dislodged dirt and debris.
Otherwise the front airbags would have been the ones to pump. (ie you even said it at ~8:40)
I guess that possible....just glad it's worked for over a year now..
