The 044 is the best saw I ever owned. I bought two of them in the early 90s while logging at the ranch in Montana. They never went back to a saw shop and I put a lot of hours on them. I still have them. And they both start and run as they should. A great saw that I wish Stihl had just left alone and kept producing. Cheers.
I bought new Stihl 044 in 1999 because it was a $100 off because the oil cap protector was broken off in shipping and the dealer didn't want to replace the case half, its only had about 20 ranks of fuel through it, its a great saw.
I just bought back my dads 044. He sold it to his friend and I bought it back for the same price plus a 25" bar. It is stock and still has a lot of power and life in it.
Good stuff as usual, I have one of these goofy wrong color saws I have to do a bearing up build. :) thx. Never had good luck with AM cylinders on these or 372. Still plan to find a 660 to build :) What do those OEM cylinders go for up there?
Nice call by your customer to spend the money to go OEM with the piston & cylinder and a full rebuild on the saw - he'll have one hell of a saw at the end of the day - love me an 044!!
Carlton used to make a chain marketed as “full house” where every link was a tooth like you showed. Apparently it was made for cutting rolls of soft sheet metal
I just bought a Stihl 044 cut about 1 1/2 cords and I killed it to load wood and when I went to start it I couldn't pull rope. It moves back & forth but its jambed in a certain location. Could I send it to you to fix? I took exhaust off and it looks like scratches on the trigger side. I bought it from a buddy that just retired from selling firewood due to age. I paid $325 I don't have much money and not sure if I can afford to fix it. Do you know what it would be worth if I sold as is has a newer 32" bar still has all the paint no ware marks. Chain is 50% Thank you for any info and help. Guy
How much you offering? I just seen one that sold on ebay just the power head for parts $533 plus shipping. Let me know how much I had saw shop run serial number it's a 1995 044.
I scooped up 8 of them along with numerous cases , cylinders, cranks and miscellaneous parts awhile back when you could get a fair shake. Sold a few off to recoup the investment and built a few nice runners - the 10mm with kolbenschmidt cylinder runs almost like a ported saw right from the factory! Expect to pay dearly for an all oem 044 that checks all the boxes nowadays though. The prices are simply thru the roof
I might be selling a Stihl 044 W/32" newer bar and chain 50%. I was using it and killed it to load wood and went back to start it and rope wouldn't pull just a little bit. Not sure how much it's worth I just need a good running saw. I live in Centralia by Olympia.
Wow that’s a lot of teeth on a chain eh. Going into camp next week can’t wait to run that new walkerized 572 💪
Thanks bud be safe out there
Good call on the OEM jug. The customer will be much happier. Imagine that 044 will pull hard when your done Donny. Nice saw

044!!!! A total classic!!! That will be a hall of fame saw!💪
Everytime I bring my 044 there’s always that one guy that says, that’s the best saw ever made!
Hey Donny, what would you say your turn around time is approximately from the time you receive a saw, to walkerize it?

That Oregon chain is a carving chain, I’ve seen some of it but not much, but chain saw carvers use it

Awesome!
😎😎😎👍👍👍
I need to find a good 044, my ported 046 is finally broken in and I’m able to turn it up
Bagus...
If I send my two super faithful 044s to you, will you show us twice more how to rebuild a Stihl 044, then send them back to me?
127 why
10mm or 12mm is always the biggest question with this model. Go Blackhawks.
12mm with a slant fin cylinder, that's what I run on my 044
