That’s weird. I grew up in a gun toting house, and we were taught never to point any sort of gun-real or imaginary-at any living thing. Yes, even our toy guns, or sticks or whatever. Mom would say, “You never even point guns in the direction of anything you don’t intend to kill.” And “Run before Gun.” And things like that. We treated them more like your Jedi lightsabers and you had to prove yourself responsible and worthy before you could even have a fake one. No joke.

My husband started learning how to use and respect firearms at the age of six. He was taught from the very first moment that it was in no way a toy and that using one was in no way a game. We don't believe that guns are bad in the household when respected and all house members are given proper training.

This got me thinking of how I wanted the job of being a camp counselor at my old summer camp. It was a Christian summer camp where we talked about god at times, but it was fun. It’s split up into four programs, ranging from the youngest kids, to the oldest teenagers, so if I were to be a camp counselor there it could teach me whether or not I’m better with kids or teenagers around my age. I went there in the two oldest programs, and after I was done I thought ‘maybe I should give it a try’ but COVID hit and the camp was canceled. If I were to get the chance again, I would try to have a job here just for one summer just so I can get the feel for it

Fun fact about my days in elementary school: One time, my dad was into call of duty and lil ol' me watched him play it whenever I would see him. So one day at school I pretended to shoot a gun that wasnt life-like, so one of the teachers caught me doing it a recess. And this teacher was mad, she grabbed me by the arm and said "we are going to the principal" in a rude manner. We arrive in the principal's office and the principal, was not a nice principal. He was so mad he called my grandmother and told her that I was playing pretend guns, even tho to me it was not a graphic way, it didnt make anyone cry, or even hurt anyone. So my grandmother gets mad at them and takes me home early. So that's what happened in elementary school. Also, illymations, please dont send me to timeout

@@tomuria3857 Pretty sure it's legal for a teacher to just put a hand on your shoulder, and even though grabbing a child by their arm and dragging them to the principal is definitely bad behaviour from an adult it isn't something they should get too much trouble over. If the kid is bruised that may be another story, but sometimes I was glad my teacher in middle school dragged a kid out of the classroom because some kids are just so hard to deal with. It's sad for the kid, because it's usually their parents fault that they are hard to deal with, but if my teacher had gotten crap for doing that we would've had a lot more fights in our classroom.

But there's a difference between "playing war with your friends who also want to play war" and "violently intruding on other children's peaceful games and making it about murder and death which then makes everyone else uncomfortable." So I'm definitely with Ily and the Sheriff on this one. 😛

Probably. The fact that the usa are such a large country means that they never take drastic measures. They fight back and forth and that's it. I honestly think if the states had stayed divided, they might have learned faster cuz anti gun states would ban them, pro gun states would let them be, some catastrophe happens and then they'd ban guns.

Well, their country DOES have a school shooting situation for a few decades now...
And even in my country (actual guns are illegal, we don't have much war talk) when kids would play pretend with villains and heroes like in action movies it was okay.
A kid pretending to shoot every toy and trying to add guns in every play... Isn't a kid others will play with often (had some classmates like that on kindergarten. Tag had to be war, hide and seek had shooting noises and he wanted to either be It or defend himself from the It with a gun).
You need to check if the kid has some anger issues or is being exposed to too much violence. Best case scenario the kid is doing mostly fine but is bad in socializing, so they may need some new ideas and a talking to.

    • @engstromfam
      @engstromfam 3 роки тому +10

First it depends on the parents, if they let there kid watch lots of stuff with guns and stuff the kid will probably think that guns are ok so they will want to play guns . Second the parent in the video is a Karen and is probably ENCOURAGING her son to play guns. Third everybody has had an obsession at one point, this kid is probably really likes guns right now. Fourth it's not a USA thing anyone, anywhere could be obsessed with guns, but it might be more common in the US depending on how many parents have guns.

Otherwise, games DO strengthen ones ability to learn what you are supposed to do and what not.

That last story reminds me of when I worked in daycare. We had this kid, we'll call him Kevin, and Kevin one day decided that he didn't want to share any of the toys. Kevin would walk up to another kid, take whatever toy they were playing with, play with it for like a minute, then abandon it to go steal a toy from another kid. I put him into timeout for not sharing, and after he got out, everything was fine. Or, so we thought. Kevin's mom comes in to pick him up at the end of the day, and she found out her precious angel was put into timeout. She then goes on a rampage, yelling at all the teachers because how dare we discipline her child, and only she is allowed to do so. From then on, Kevin wasn't allowed to be put into time out, for fear of his mother's wrath.

This reminded me a lot of conversations I've had with my therapist. She works a bit with adolescents and teens, and she's made her own unofficial "DSM" for some of the issues she sees in the kids she treats, because 9 times out of 10 those issues are that their parents are crap. Things like "VPM" for "Vicarious Pageant Mom," "DSD" for "Daughter-Shaming Dad," "EPE" for "Expected Parenting to be Easy," to name a few. She actually used to work with kids as young as you describe, but she had to stop because she couldn't handle dealing with their parents. It broke her heart to know what a kid needed to be happy but have the parents take no time or effort to do their part, and it was affecting her quality of care so she moved to working with adults and teens. It's really sad.

Oh my god this reminds me of when I used to teach a cooking class. Eventually I laid down a few hard and fast rules. One, we do not bring up politics nor religion unless in the context of the class itself and even then we do not make fun of any of them. This is largely because I would get fights that go more like “but my parents’ said” type and I am not going to argue with a kid that has had no time to actually think for themselves and is repeating their parents’ beliefs only. So yeah, that got banned.
Also another rule was about playing with sharp objects or other dangerous things. Guys I think this is obvious. I’m there to not only teach but minimize accidents. I would like the kids to make my job less difficult. Not only that, they risk injuring their classmates, myself, themselves, and also traumatizing already traumatized kids into not working in the kitchen. I can not tell you the number of kids I had to reassure when it came to working with knives and oil in a safe manner that wasn’t just “don’t touch that!” type of training. So yeah.
Then we had the bullying. While I would try to work with finding out if a kid was acting out for a reason, if they made a habit of it, we made a point of kicking the kid out of class to wait for their parents to pick them up and then explain it. One time we had a kid that would do it so often that her parents eventually took her out of class for an entire year as punishment, after making her apologize to the other kid of course. She did return to class eventually and the parents still insisted on paying us the entire year, but yeah, it apparently was an effective punishment as I never had a problem with her in class ever again. Honestly illymation is correct. The hardest thing is less dealing with the children (who make the job worthwhile) but with the adults, especially the parents. My hardest conversations where with dads who would ask me “so when can my daughter take over making dinner?” like it was a forgone conclusion and that he could leave a 9 year old unsupervised in a kitchen….yeah. We would always have to repeat that “we encouraged supervised practice for all our students as it is a lifelong learning process that requires experimenting, learning, and practicing recipes.” These weren’t the only conversations but they probably were the ones that made me bite my tongue the most.
Also I may have banned graphic descriptions of some kids about their hunting. I mean, sure, we teach the kids how to break down a chicken but that’s different from attempting to be as graphic as possible about your families latest deer hunt for the sole purpose of making your classmates uncomfortable. My students did eventually learn to try to be empathetic and respectful of their classmates boundaries but it was a major stretch to say their parents would ever learn it.
And while this wasn’t a hard rule, I did try to encourage everyone to participate. I made it a rule that one didn’t have to eat what was made in class, especially if they had an allergy or religious reasons, but I expected reasonable levels of participation, and for them to at least consider trying the food, even if it wasn’t a food they liked. I would follow this up with a reminder that cooking wasn’t just about eating what one likes but also making it for those we like too and sometimes that means making food we can’t eat or don’t like. Also, for the older ones, I would point out that if they decided to get a job in the food industry, they also would not get much choice in what they were allowed to cook so they needed to learn the right way to cook something and the only way to know that is by trying the food. Basically also telling them they didn’t have to like it or even swallow the food. I provided amble napkins for a reason if I suspected but these kids are adaptable. Most learned to try bits of the food, give their opinion and discuss it, but no longer pretend gag if they didn’t like something. If anything they discussed among each other how to improve the recipe in a way they might like which I loved and ask me if it might work. Their parents were often ecstatic about this part as it would make the kids less picky over time. Can they still be? Sure. But a kid willing to be open about trying foods every now and again, or at least able to make themselves something they do like, is better than one who doesn’t do either.

My favorite experience with a kid was when the special Ed class I helped out in had a field trip to Disneyland and a few other students who helped out in that class went to. One of the students in the Ed class I was close with and we went on haunted mansion together, meaning we sat in the same cart. He got scared some way through and I told him if he got scared to grab my hand and squeeze it. He did. During the entire experience I made small jokes here and there to try and cheer him up and even yelled at the projection of the ghost woman that “I can do that too” and copied what she said in the same voice she had. It always made me happy when he smiled and laughed and even when he was sad, because I always found some way to cheer him up, asking him to color, or to blow some bubbles, or even playing tag which is a game I absolutely hate by the way because I hate running and being touched in any way even by a lot of family members- so it was rare for me to offer that- but I did so to cheer him up. I loved that boy- he was so fucking cute- not in a weird crushy way- no he was innocent, naive and adorable- that kind of way-
