So dating literally is practicing a committed relationship. Everyone is a "practice boy or girl". Dating is the time to learn how to have a healthy relationship with people they are attracted to. Then they just keep practicing until they meet a right person.
It doesn't help though that "dating" these days is mostly reduced to instant messaging. The whole going on dates with people to get to know them is an important part. Sadly now it's "you go on dates to show you are committed" rather than finding out what people are actually like before making a commitment.
