I am a 72 year old grandmother, with a 5 year old, 90 pound male Doberman. I run my dog 2 miles a day, with a golf cart. He is the most loving, loyal, intelligent, athletic and funny dog I have ever owned (and I owned several breeds). I also have 10 grandchildren (8 of which are boys). My Doberman is fantastic with my grandchildren, cats, and strangers. That being said, when a unknown and uninvited salesman showed up at my door and began to raise his voice and get aggressive, my Dobie quickly sent him on his way. If a Doberman is trained aand socialized as a puppy, he will be a source of joy every day of your life.
Sandy Bond how was training? lol I have a min pin 😂 a complete peanut who thinks it’s as big as all these dogs listed compared to all dogs listed but the Doberman is my favorite.. what’s shedding like as well??
@@Aoksyzbye A Doberman's shedding is minimal, because they are a single coated dog (GSDs and labs are double coated dogs, so their shedding is significant). I could have filled a mattress when my lab shed her coat🙂
@gypsy Fuck. My baby is almost 11 and this is something I worry about all the time. He still seems happy and youthful but I know the clock is ticking. I honestly don't know what I'm going to do without him. I've had him since he was 5 weeks old. I wish they lived forever.
@@metalmayhem3622 OK I know exactly what you mean.....but please no bad language....LOL My last GSD lived to be 13 and about 2 months....I so dreaded the thought of having her put down....she had hip dysplasia for the last 2 years but not bad enough to put her down for....anyway I used to pray for her to die in her sleep.....and GOD answered that prayer....that is exactly how she died. Didn't get another 1 for a year and a half. So prayer for that for your baby....
I had a very large GSD male who I rescued at 2 years old. He was very social and I took him everywhere I went and never on a leash. He had a few run-ins with my roommates 'friends' over the years who were tweekers. Finally I got married and moved my wife in with us. I had to work out of town not long after she moved in and I told her that my boy would protect and she had no worries. This didn't seem to ease her as she wasn't ever raised around good dogs. A couple weeks of me being gone and she calls and says, " you'll never guess what your dog did." So of course I ask thinking he chewed up one of her shoes or something. Apparently at around 1AM he had come into the bedroom and woke her quietly by nudging her with his nose. She knew by his action that something wasn't right. He immediately went over to the back door and just pointed at it with his nose. She looked out and saw a creeper in our back yard. She went around to the side door and opened it said " go get him!" That poor bastard barely made it to the fence, but not over. The dog tore the ass out of the dude's jeans! The neighbor heard the commotion and met the dude on the other side of the fence with a baseball bat. He must have had a rough night in jail after that. Years later, I was redoing my landscaping and raked up a few pieces of denim. I can only imagine what happened to that guy's ass! My boy lived to be 13 and was anywhere from 115 and skinny to 140lbs. as on old man. He never had any formal training whatsoever. Btw, my wife LOVED that dog. She was the one holding him when he crossed the rainbow bridge. RIP Boss boy!
I’m a fairly new GSD owner and I love everything about my girl. She’s six months old and always on the lookout for me, the kids, my Golden. She’s amazing. Your story made me laugh then cry. Thanks for sharing it.
My mom had a massive Shepherd that was a beer distributor gaurd dog. At one point someone broke into her house and stole a gun and she woke up to a shattered window, blood all through the house, dog missing, gun missing. She called the cops who said they had the gun and the dog and the dog had mauled the guy who broke in to a pulp after disarming him. Dude spent 6 months in the regional hospital and the dog recovered the gun when he was done with him.
She woke up shortly after the dog and guy went out the window but him and the dog we're gone so she called the police and stayed in the home to meet them. I was 2 at the time so I won't pretend to remember but Knowing Jesse (the GSD) he had a reputation for letting people into the beer distributor and holding them there for as long as 5 hours until the morning shift arrived. When my uncle died people came and told us stories about that dog years after he died at 17 years old of cancer. I wouldn't be surprised if he didn't fuss until the man got in and then mauled him. That was kind of his style.
One more quick clarification, she says she called right after, and then again about 12 hours later after work. First call was when it happened, second call was to see if they found the dog or gun.. the second call they had found Jesse and the intruder. (They had found him earlier but Jesse was pounded and he was hospitalized in the mean time).

Just found this, really liked the video. I’m a petite woman and wanted a good family dog that looked intimidating so I got a female rottie. Best dog I ever had, very well obedience trained. Later I got a yorkiepoo (initially 1lb, maxed at 5 lbs). She was great with the Yorkie & other small dogs I had, good with other dogs & people she met. But she would watch to make sure things were ok. She stood stock still at my great-aunts side when my aunt started losing her balance, if my aunt coughed the rott would stand & look at her until my aunt told her she was ok. When my daughter & her boyfriend were arguing she went & stood between them which made them stop. I never taught her to be a guard dog. She let the Yorkie think he was top dog & would let him win at tug-of-war (really cute to watch). She had her CGC, first leg of tracking and obedience certificates and a Therapy Dog certificate. She changed a lot of peoples minds about Rottweilers. I always tell people it generally isn’t the breed that’s bad, it’s people who make them bad (either bad breeders or people who don’t socialize and train their dogs).
Thank you so much for acknowledging the FACT the women can handle a breed such as the Rottie. I’m a 57 y/o single female with 2 Dobes & 2 Rotties. They are trained well and socialized well (via my training exclusively) and are big mush-pots until threatened or they perceive a threat to me. They are wonderful with kids. So, thank you!!

If they are able to take down a full grown man, what makes you think ANOTHER full grown man could stop them. Please look deeply into proper training for any dog you own or may own.
@@carlrest6553 those two on your street are rare then. 100% purebred bullmastiffs typically don't bark unless something out of the ordinary is happening.
@@B3GINNER That is correct. Those dogs may have been mixed because pure bred Mastiffs don't bark at all hardly. And, their great with babies and family, but fierce when need to be. I've owned 4 Mastiffs in my life.
Carl Rest they were literally bred not to bark because they needed to pin poachers so that they could be arrested. If they barked the poacher would have time to get away
The bullmastiff don't bark without a reason once she barks I know someone is in the premises. They are loving and very protective of their owners. I love her so much.
I had a male GSD I lost last August. He weighed 104 at the last vet visit. He was BIG. I miss that sense of security, even though he had a tender heart and was a lover, not a fighter, people would see him and form an "opinion". I would walk down any dark alley with him and know I was safe.
I too lost my male shep last yr. Spleen cancer. He was 108 pounds. I miss his big body barreling around the house. Gentle giant. Was my son's therapy dog. It's soooo hard when the leave us. They really do leave a hole in your ❤️. Hope you are doing well and sorry for your loss.
Thank you for sticking up for women! I am a single mom and have a male bull mastiff/ American Bulldog mix who weighs usually around 105lbs and is 26" at the withers. He is a BIG DOG ! He's very powerful & protective. I adopted him @ 7 wks. He has only been trained by me with positive reinforcement. With one word he knows to back off and sit alert at my side waiting command. Also with one word he knows to protect us. He's had to do this on one occasion and preformed like the hero we know he is! He prevented serious harm to me! I love this big guy and yes, I am a woman with complete loving control of my dog. I also did it on my own! His first 3 years of life I worked with him patiently 6+hrs a day. Most training done while playing. Yes, a confident women with a trained & loved companion has all the control she needs.
I had a large 140# Bullmastiff. I rescued him at about 1 year old. Went through obedience, the trainer wanted him to be a therapy dog. He never left my side. I would walk him without a leash and would never go more than five feet away. For the first month he never barked. Thought he was deaf. Great family dog. Everyone in my neighborhood loved him. I never thought he would be a great protection dog, he seemed to docile. Until one night when I was walking him off leash around midnight. I heard a guy yell behind me. I turned to look and a questionable guy behind me, Cerberus had him cornered at a brick fence behind me. I called Cerberus, he came back to me and the guy decided to walk in a different direction. While being a very lazy dog he always went to the door and sat next to my wife or kids when they opened the front door. Never had to bark, his presence was a sufficient deterrent. I lost him after 3 years to cancer a few years ago. Still trying to recover. Best dog ever. I will be getting another. Unfortunately my boxer/golden mix needs to be in a single dog home. He had a hard time accepting other dogs after we lost Cerberus.
The best dog that ever owned me was half German shepherd and half Doberman. Very territorial, he saved my son's life, guarded the house (and his cars!), was incredibly smart, independent but loving and loyal. And I got him from the shelter at Fort Hood for the price of a rabies shot. Best $7 I ever spent! He was the best of both breeds.
Am a student and looking to get one , actually mainly need it as a pet but also as a guard dog due to high crime rate here. But there’s no way I can train it for protection around here .so can they still serve as guard dog without any form of protection training?

We had a male Rottweiler who lived 15 years, never neutered. He had a powerful bark and a scary charge. I trained him (just basic commands) when I was only 10 years old. He was kind and patient with my little sister and our numerous small animals. Best guard and family dog hands down. ❤
I’ve owned three of these dogs on the list. I can’t say enough about each breed. 1) English Mastif is absolutely at your side at all times and totally loyal to a fault. Super loving and great around kids other than occasionally toppling toddlers over due to their great mass. 2) Rotties take up the aggression a notch over the mastif. They are super loving and big teddy bears to family members. Super smart and obedient to their master or handler. 3) Boxers are absolutely the reigning clowns of the dog world. Never a dull moment with one around. Loyal loving and aim to please their master or handler and super protective of small children and the ladies.
I have a now 14 month old GSD Boxer mix, his mother is a GSD X Boxer and father a GSD, making my pup around 25% Boxer but he really really loves kids and the ladies! I find it an amazing mix just like a Shepherd but bonds a little bit more to other people and is a bigger clown in general but means business when it comes to it!
I really admire your common sense and practical assessment of the suitability of each breed to be a family defender. As a retired Teacher and lifelong useful dog owner I give you 10 out of 10!
I love this video so much! I’m a 5’1” women of ~120lbs. Its been hard trying to decide which dog breed to consider getting and I’ve definitely been worried about getting a dog which is too big, since I’ve only ever had small dogs. Very encouraging to read the comments and listen to the support for single women to own some of these dogs. Thank you so much!
If I may, I would encourage you to look at Rottweilers. As far as all of the logistics that come with dog ownership, they're easy - minimal grooming, not prone to sensitive stomach issues(although prone to overeating, so don't free-feed), reasonable exercise demands, readily trainable, very affectionate, and they aren't a super exotic breed that's hard to find or expensive to purchase. They are innately territorial, but they seem to intuitively trust their owner's judgement, so they won't just sit growling when your best friend comes for lunch. They socialize very easily and settle quickly with other dogs, both big and small. They're super affectionate, and will become your bestest buddy in a hurry. They're also the first thing most people picture of when they think "guard dog", which is a deterrent in and of itself. If I were looking today, I'd be looking for a female(personal preference) purebred Rottweiler from a good breeder that had breeding stock readily traced back to German bloodlines. German standards for registering dogs to breed make Canada and the US look like a joke, and it shows. Easily in my top five favourite breeds, and probably the easiest dog to handle by the average Joe/Jane on that list by a fair margin.
German Shepherd dogs are the breed that I would recommend, loyal, obedient, protective, intelligent,it’s a dog many women choose , matter of fact it’s the 3rd smartest dog breed in the world
Im a life long German Shepherd owner and also 5'2" female. They are fairly easy to handle and make great companions. I have had both males and females and it really is an amazing breed. So smart and so loyal (You will find you have a new shadow with one) My current female is fun, goofy, playful and oh so loving. She is friendly and playful with other people and dogs who she knows and aloof with those she does not. However, if anyone even seems a remote threat she is fierce. She patrols the house and sets up strategic watch points when everyone is asleep, particularly the access to the stairs. I never taught her that, she does it all on her own. In fact, my other German Shepherds from years past have been the same. They love their human and truly want to take care of you. Just make sure they are properly socialized and you will have an amazing dog you will wonder how you lived without one. I love all dogs and all breeds, have owned mutts and other breeds too, but my favorite is hands down the German Shepherd.
My GSD is going on 13..and he's still going strong. You never have to encourage them to be watchful...this is who they are. Yet his best buddy in the world is a tiny cockapoo. He cares for her as if she were his own. lovely dog!
I loved my Rotties. Great dogs. And no one would mess with me when I walked my 100# Rottie down the road. We were an awesome team and anyone who says women can't handle them has some other issues we won't go into.

Same reason why parents never see how much their kids have grown up but everybody else does😂 you'll see your rottie as a baby always😂jokes apart, train and LOVE your rottie, and everything will be rainbows and butterflies ❤️❤️
My GSD lived until she was 17 years old. No hip problems or other maladies, just old age. She was extremely smart, loving with the family, and a great protector. Only downside with this breed is the shedding, but that's easy to overlook since they are such great family members. Great list.
17!? Wow, that's great! What did you feed her? Burt Ward developed a food for large breeds, and claimed it helped their Great Danes achieve much longer than normal lifespans. I have a preference for large dogs, so I am always trying to do what I can to keep ours healthy, but the downside is generally that they don't tend to live as long as smaller dogs. (Though I find the same can be said of most species, really, including humans. Most of the really old folks tend to be smaller in stature, while giants seem to have lifespans limited to only a few decades by comparison....) The GSD we had when I was young lived to be only 10, and his father only 7, so I was happy to get 14 solid years from my Rhodesian Ridgeback. We got 16 from our Aussie Shepherd before we had to let him go when his nasal tumors made it too hard for him to continue, and 16 from the Briard, but those were the longest lived dogs we've had so far.
@@UpRoaryus didn’t feed her anything special really. Canned dog food, and some table food once in awhile as a treat. She was just a healthy dog. Lots of exercising (running, playing), and lots of love.
17 is crazy! Ours is close to 12 and I hope he can stay healthy for as long as possible! Shedding is definitely the biggest downside. Every week it seems we can brush out another dog out of him…
I had a Rottie years ago. Rescue. Totally changed my mind about the breed. She was amazing, loved my wife and daughter to no end, and was absolutely fearless. Bone cancer took her at ten.

I was a single mom and had a 120 pound rottweiler. I never had a problem controlling him and he was the best dog I've ever had. He lived to be 14 years old which was such a blessing. Excellent family dog and protector and very smart too! I miss my Brodie boy immensely!
Yes he was! He was a good judge of character. Most people he liked, but there were a few he didn't. I understood why immediately or learned later. I learned to trust his instinct.
My Daughters GSD saved her during home invasion. She was home alone with her male German Shepherd, the middle of the night a guy on drugs broke thru the kitchen door (even though the dog was barking like crazy) when he gained entry, her GSD went to work and tore the guy up. He managed to get back out. Took the cops a few days to find him, but they did. Thanks to her naturally protective boy, my daughter is okay today. Could have turned out very differently if she didn't have him. He's our hero
Mine also doubled as livestock protection dogs. They have a very undeserved reputation of not getting along with livestock. The truth is, when properly trained and socialized, they are phenomenal livestock protectors.
GSD! My six month old female has already proven her fearlessness. I was at a red light she was in the back seat with the window rolled down. Man ran up to my car and was being really aggressive and she growled and barked and lunges at him through the window. Man damn near pissed himself. So thankful for my GSD💕
I was parked at a grocery store it was about 12 AM , at the same time a cop was going into the store and my GSD was in the car barking and cop looks at me and says" You don't need a alarm in your car, nobody is getting into that car to steal it with that shepard in it!" 😄
I've a Newfoundland, it was 2 years old when a person was over my house. We got into an argument I was sitting down, the man hit me in the face, my Newfoundland jumped over my sofa and took the man down,never even drew blood,the man ran out the door my newf laid back down I couldn't believe it!
I can well believe it, I had a mate, he was a bit of a joker, one dark evening he rang the doorbell and hid in the garage. I went out with my 2 year old Newfoundland, my friend jump out on me from about 10 foot away, the Newf took one step back out of shock then went like I had never seen her, full on, I was taken aback at how proctective she became. If he had continued towards me she would have had him. lol she was as soft as a bun, last dog I would have expected it from.
My rottie Bronson was the best dog I ever owned. My kids would go outside and all I had to say was "Bronson go watch the kids" and he would go outside and keep all of them in sight If any of them strayed or got out of the gate he wasn't going to be happy about it. He was a good boy and we miss him
Glad to see the giant schnauzer on the list! Had labs for years and thinking of switching to the schnauzer for my next pup. Seem to be pretty healthy breed, naturally protective, minimal shedding.
Over my lifetime I’ve had Rotts, Neos, a Bullmastiff, but my best guard dog turned out to be my Great Pyrenees. He patrolled the perimeter consistently and stayed on the look out. I suppose we were his ‘sheep’. Currently have a Cane Corso and a Dogo Argentino puppy. The Dogo looks promising, nine weeks old and it’s obvious he is highly intelligent. And yes, I am a woman.
Now that he is grown, I will swear by the Dogo as well. He observes me intently and tries to imitate what I do. Although sometimes he makes a mess of it,LOL. The Cane Corso is an escape artist, which I have observed in Canes before. Not stereotyping breeds, btw, just talking about individuals. All my dogs have had good qualities.
I have a Malinois who was abandoned and didn't get much formal training in her developmental puppy stage. It's been a chore and quite stressful to get her to where she is now, but considering I've only had her for two months, I think her progress is phenomenal. That said, she has fit in with the family structure as though she's always been with us, and her dedication to protecting my daughter while on walks is better than any security system. No one (with common sense) is going to come near her.
we have a pair of sister Malinois that are now 14 months old. when I step out the front door, one of them will immediately begin to run back and forth along our chain link fence, growling, and I am sure that she is warning any prowler that may be out there, that they had stand back.

@@greatness15 mine are now a bit over two years old and both 'natural guard dogs' with one of the sisters being much more aggressive than the other (both are very alert). however, they need a lot of personal attention and room to burn off energy. my yard is big so they have room to exercise, but as I work can only spend 30 minutes per day with them, and I can see that is not enough, as they begin to chew anything they can find, etc as a substitute for attention.
Our boxer was 16 when she passed away. We got her when I was 3, so it was like losing a sister when she died. She was always fiercely protective of all of us. Even without any formal training, she was an excellent guard dog. There was one time when 2 of my brothers friends were on our porch teasing me through the screen door. My boxer, Ginger, was sitting next to me steady looking back and forth from me to them. Thinking it would scare them, I finally yelled, "sick 'em!" That dog knocked down the screen door and chased those boys all the way home. She never bit them. But she did scare the life out of them and they never bothered me like that again. 😂❤
First sorry for your lost,mine passed at 12.That breed only lives to 8 -10yrs.After that your one of the few who are lucky alot of health problems in breed.Only heard of a few made it to 12 or beyond.Have to say this is to good owners doing thier part with ck ups and the right care.
Thx for including the GSD. My guy lets small children at the park run up to him n grab him n hug him around his neck (small kids especially r just drawn to him) but the 2 times guys walked in the house unannounced (1 to fix an a/c and one a friend of my husbands my guy had never met) he was on them but didn’t attack - I could see him looking to me and assessing for himself while being “ready” and emitting a low bad ass growl until I told him it was ok. After this he sat at my feet the whole time just watching. This is my 8th GSD through my childhood to now and they’ve always been like this. Just be ready to visit the groomers for a defurminator session n I couldn’t live without my defurminator comb - and my robovac 😂.they’re worth it though!!
I’ve owned & loved 3 Dobies & 2 Shepard’s. Both are wonderful, smart & loyal dogs. They are great with kids & highly protective of family members. Shepard’s do shed quite a bit, which may be an issue for family members with allergies. Be sure to source your dog from a recognized breeder and advanced training is a great idea, as all owners should want their dogs to be good ambassadors for their breed. This is the best way to ensure harmonious family integration & behavior. These dogs get incredibly attached to their family’s & owner’s should anticipate a life-long relationship with these pups.
I worked with the German Shepard during my time in the US Army and currently have a 10 year old companion… I know of no dog breed that brings more to the table when considering the complete package… my home will never be without one…
My dog is a mix of German Shepard, Pitbull, Rottweiler, boxer, and Staffordshire. I call him the perfect “family” guard dog. Super friendly, smart, easy to train, but boy are his protective instincts on point! Best dog I could have asked for.
Ive wanted a Rottie for a while as a new member of my family (at home) of two (my daughter and I). This just sealed the deal for me. Litter is due in March 2022 and should be ready to come home in June or July 💕 Thank you for your suggestion to single mothers. Screw anyone that doubts what we are capable of- we clearly do it all already and a dog would fit into our lifestyle very well.
My GSD is so in tune to where I am at all times. He puts himself between me & someone he doesn't know... even other dogs. He travels with me everywhere. When outside he waits until I go in 1st before he comes in behind me. When he goes outside to potty he will come find me 1st thing if I'm not where I usually am. Sometimes I'll be taking a bathroom break & he'll peek in just to see where I am. He is more patient than my husband & is the most intelligent breed I've ever owned & trained. He amazes me everyday with something new I see he does on his own. Its like he understands sentences & knows what in thinking. I am amazed by his intuitive behaviors. I dont know if it's the GSD breed or just my GSD... but I love how loyal he is & how protective I feel when he's with me.
Thank you for this video. My purebred German Shepherd is 3 months old today. I got him to protect our home. He is brave and courageous at this age and I know that he will grow up to be the guard dog that I have always wanted.
Our English Lab will gladly show the intruder where the safe is, provide them with the combination and maybe even perhaps help them with breaking it open.

My little lady, RIP baby girl, was a most ferocious family defender, but in turn -- the silliest goofball you could ever want. She was the perfect protector for my (then) infant daughter. Bodyguard and personal clown/play mate. And as a 5'0 woman (granted one that can bench a VW Bug) I had no issues controlling her. Definitely going to share this. Excellent info!!!

Have owned three rottweilers (all rescues.) As a touring audio engineer, I would leave no other dog alone with my wife and kid while I am gone. That 0-60 is he main reason. My wife cannot only control him but he sees her as the ONE to protect. I allow myself for "fun times," what she says GOES, and RIGHT NOW. it is really hard for me to imagine my life without a rottweiler next to me, curled around me, butt wiggling. My neighbor had to get rid of s wonderful shepherd, if I did not already have a pit/boxer mix, we wold have had two German dogs. Note to future rottweiler owners. The first 18 months is nuts (and stressful,) run them, work them, train them. it will be the most rewarding experience ever. They are smart, loyal, and never forget.

My akita cuddles with me every second but if anyone even looks at me sideways they are risking an ER visit. I used to run with spray or a stunner, now I dont have to.
Ive seen 2 in 35 years in dogs. One was muzzled and crazy. The other was stunning looks and behaviour. i ride with a flash light. Blinds the guy and gets my dog lean time
There's no other dog like the Akita. I've had 2. I miss them terribly. Khan passed in 2005 from cancer. Just now thinking of getting another. Khan is my avatar pic.
All Akitas are psychopathic, pitbulls get the bad wrap that Akitas deserves. I've known several over the years and even though they are beautiful looking all had a screw loose, it should definitely be banned
lincs 4life they’re just dominant and dog aggressive imo With the right training they can be amazing dogs. I know a guy who has a german shepherd, a Belgian malinois and an American Akita, all males and they get along great.

long time dog owner and have had several different breeds including several GSDs. I have three beaucerons and for me they are best all round protection dogs. Need no training, the smartest dogs I have ever had. They will challenge someone on their property but will quickly stand down if they see you do not perceive the person as a threat. And two are great frisbee dogs. I could go on but anyone who is looking for a loyal, highly intelligent dog should give the breed a look.
We recently rescued a Great Pyrenees/Mastiff. Amazing dog, and thanks to the Mastiff side no grooming issues. I could spend hours watching our new girl work our large yard.
We had a Working Collie German Sheppard growing up that was a super home protector. He even knew I was not supposed to run and would grab me by the pants if I tried running. He also would flatten kids who he thought were pushing to fast in the wagon. Yet he rough housed with my younger sister who had no limitations. A great dog!
I love German Shepherds. I had one growing up. She was amazing. Smart, athletic, very good at sensing friends vs. trouble. Great watchdog. Never had to worry about solicitation at our house! I hope to get another one some day.

I call Malinois 24/7 dogs, always ready to be active, it seems. They truly are very high energy and stamina types. I'm a professional dog trainer. My German Shorthair Pointer Chow Mix is now 16. She was an amazing protection trained dog for me. She helped me train dogs and people for most of her life. She was worth tens of thousands at one time. Or Priceless to me! I want to clone her. I plan to get her DNA collected soon, than store it until I'm ready and the neices go down. GSDs are AWESOME.
If women and men are equally physically capable why is their a separation in pro sports. Why are transgender men crushing women's records in power lifting and track. My 11 months old gsd that sits at 105 would drag most women and a good majority of men down the street if it wanted to. You are delusional if you think we are the same physically.

Am a student and looking to get one , actually mainly need it as a pet but also as a guard dog due to high crime rate here. But there’s no way I can train it for protection around here .so can they still serve as guard dog without any form of protection training? I don’t Mind about the high energy as I can allocate about 4hours of my time daily to keep him active

Great list! I especially liked that you pointed out that the dogs needed socialization and basic obedience training, otherwise they can be uncontrollable. I have owned both Akita's and a Rottweiler over the years. Both ended up protecting my family. The funny thing is that my mother-in-law became unable to live on her own and moved in with my family. At first she was terrified of our female Rottweiler and insisted that I had to get rid of her (being from the Philippines she was scared of dogs that large). However, after about three to four months she discovered that she had a new friend and protector. Any time we had a visitor in the house I knew that Tasha was going to be right at her feet keeping an eye on them. Tasha knew that she was weak and unable to protect herself so Tasha was right there to protect her.

thrilled to see the beauceron on this list! they're one of my all time favorites, although going back to what you said about rottweilers and women, that was actually one of my biggest apprehensions. I don't have a lot of experience working with dogs that have real drive, so I didn't feel confident starting with a dog I can't physically control if I failed with the training aspect. So for women who don't feel quite ready for that much dog, I'd recommend heelers. Heelers can be a bit much on the exercise requirements but they're super velcro, protective, territorial, and the somewhat neurotic nature of them makes them extremely vigilant. I've got a 50 pound male who's crazy strong but I also know that if need be I can just pick him up lol.
I love how you mentioned the Presa having a character similar to the APBT. I have a Dogo and a Presa now. And I was raised with my family owning a lot of game APBT and when I say my Presa has the exact temperament of an APBT I can’t make it up. He’s just twice the size weighing in at 110 lean lbs of muscle
I’m from the UK and have a female Boxer , and I feel 100% safe with her around . She’s always alert when needed ! She’s strong and athletic. We were walking in the woods the other day and a man was behind us , walking at steady pace , she was right by my side and kept looking behind at the man until he passed us . Any noise outside or around the house she’s there ! She is absolutely brilliant with our children too . Love her to bits xx
Absolute true love, Rottweiler. I adopted one from the shelter. Had a horrible neighbor issue and wanted protection. He was between 1 to 2 yrs old, rescued at a drug house. Abused and seriously underweight. Found out I was pregnant shortly after I got him. He was the perfect Nana dog to my baby. Loved and protected her beyond imagination. Too many sweet stories. I never had to question about his guarding ability. He was always right there and didn't have to do much to get his point across to any possible threat. Even though he was treated horribly before adoption, he was only a sweet, goofy, loveable and protective part of my family.

You hit the Boxer on the head. Our girl is protective, loving and hilarious at times. However, I have never had an opportunity to see her in action for protection. But telling by the way she greets people at the door when they come in, she would be a great protector. She is also so loving with our French Bulldog puppy. 10/10 would recommend lol
I had a Belgian Sheppard, and he was a great companion. He had high drive and energy, but never had a problem with it. He was very well behaved, always stuck by the family side, never aggressive, and we lived in an apartment. If you are careful with the education and socialization, they are great family dogs. Not for a novice owner, though.

My parents always had German Shepherds growing up on the farm and I can honestly say that they are on the top of my list for dog guards, definitely. I’m in my 40’s and have never “owned” ( I don’t know if anyone can truly own another animal) a dog but I’ve had experience with German Shepherds and Akita’s living on my parents farm. I’ve heard that Golden Retriever, Labrador, or even mixes of this breeds are great for first time dog owners. Love this channel, man! High quality video, editing, and audio are fantastic. While you list this video as dogs that do not need any training, I am glad that you emphasize the fact that all dogs need plenty of socialization and basic obedience training. I have been an amateur dog trainer for over 50 years and have trained many dogs by first training their owners. The Akita and the Rottweiler are two of my favorite breeds, and both have shown that they have what it takes if trouble comes looking for you. One night I was woke by my male Akita when he put his paw in my face. When I let him outside to do his business all hell broke out. I grabbed a flashlight and went to see what was wrong but did not see anything. It was in the morning that I found a large chunk of pants left as a present from the intruder that was in our yard. Years later my frail mother-in-law moved in with my family, at the time I had a female Rottweiler and that dog scared her to death. However, in a few months the two were best friends. Any time there was someone new in the house you could find Tasha laying at the feet of my mother-in law. I would have hated to be someone that had ill intentions toward her. Tasha would even check on me when I would help her out of a stuffed chair when she was having problems standing. Please, keep emphasizing that all dogs need basic training. I have seen too many disasters because the dogs did not have basic obedience training.
Asti Jay Mine doesn’t believe in border patrol because he thinks he owns everything the light touches. He can clear our 6 foot fence and trot down the street like he’s a pretty little flower.
You could've added the Boerboel (South African Mastiff) on the list, cause it's a great family (cuddle) dog, would die for you for protecting you, doesn't have extreme energy levels. However, it's a must for the Boerboel to have an area to guard and should not be kept indoors all the time
I have a 9 months old male entire rotti Hans , attend obedience weekly since he was 14 weeks old - still going I handle him so well no worries he’s stable , it’s what you put into your dog that’s what you get out and Hans is a pleasure as a single mum with three kids - he’s our protector and part of the family!
I'm a single female with a rottie. Did have two Rotties unfortunately they both went rainbow bridge 2018. Love the rotti and the rotti loves me and my children.
We have had 4 Giant Schnauzers and they are one of the best companions I have ever owned. They are highly intelligent and a very devoted family companion, great with our kids, grandkids and great grandkids! High energy, very strong dogs but very obedient and easily trained!
My best friend just passed of 11 years. Kaiser, German shepherd, so loyal and royal. Born with manners. I keep calling his name and just maybe he is with me!
Thought I would update my post here. I did buy 2 German shepherds, a male and female, and have had them for over a year. I love this breed. For my personal needs so far, they are the best dog I can have, I believe. I have owned many breeds in my 63 years of being on this earth including the GSD and I have returned to the GSD. I believe I will keep this breed for the rest of my life, for me nothing tops the GSD over all.

My wife had a rottweiler when I met her. Lived a bit over 13 years before he had to be put down. For a solid 11 years he was very active yet extremely aggressive when he needed to be but once the arthritis came it really took it's toll R.I.P Moose ❤
I picked up a Rottie years ago out in Barstow California. He was running with a bunch of feral dogs that were running around the area at the time. Not gonna lie, when I first saw him I thought I was done for. He was skin and bones but came running at me so fast that I didn't really have a time to react. He leapt, hit me square in the chest, knocked me down... and then nearly drowned me in slobber. Poor guy still had a puppy collar on that his skin had started to grow over. Found a vet that helped me out financially by only charging me for anesthesia and x-rays, who surgically had to remove his collar. That boy was one of the best and sweetest dogs I had the honor of having in my life. Even half starved, he shared his food with a kitten I had at the time. It's been 30 years and I still miss him.

The society has label woman as weak and incapable, therefore many think we cant handle a strong athletic dog breed, which is totally false. I have had 2 German shepherd growing up, never was afraid of being with them two giant guardians. Now that I am a young adult, I would like to have a guardian for home protection. Also because I prefer larger size dogs in general. And I came across a beautiful Rottie puppy, first thing the store owner said was: You want to own a Rottweiler? Maybe you should go for a golden retriever or a cat. Rottweiler is very aggressive, they aren’t for woman.” And I just laughed 😂 .... Imagine how ignorant this person was.
I have an Australian Shepherd and she is PERFECT for this job. Aussies are extremely loyal, protective, and downright smart. I swear mine knows what I’m saying half the time. They don’t adapt well to strangers which makes them perfect for home protection. Once she gets to know a person, she will love them for a lifetime but this takes time. So any intruder to our our would be greeted with barking, growling, and teeth. I doubt she would bite but she is pretty intimidating to strangers. I love my Aussie. Most cuddly and loyal dog I’ve ever had.
Having worked in a couple of animal shelters over the years, I can tell you which breeds consistently topped the dogbite case list. The Dachshund, Chow Chow, Cocker Spaniel, Dalmatian. Not necessarily in that order. I don’t know statistics elsewhere, so I can’t say whether local bloodlines had any bearing; I doubt it. This is south Louisiana.
I absolutely love my Cane Corso's and my Rottweiler. My Corso's are serious protectors. My Rottweiler is also a great protection dog. She is also a great ranch dog and herds cattle on drives as well as protecting them on the drive from predators P.S. I am 59 years old and have no problem handling my 2 Cane Corso's and my Rottweiler

I am a 72 year old grandmother, with a 5 year old, 90 pound male Doberman. I run my dog 2 miles a day, with a golf cart. He is the most loving, loyal, intelligent, athletic and funny dog I have ever owned (and I owned several breeds). I also have 10 grandchildren (8 of which are boys). My Doberman is fantastic with my grandchildren, cats, and strangers. That being said, when a unknown and uninvited salesman showed up at my door and began to raise his voice and get aggressive, my Dobie quickly sent him on his way. If a Doberman is trained aand socialized as a puppy, he will be a source of joy every day of your life.

@@Aoksyzbye A Doberman's shedding is minimal, because they are a single coated dog (GSDs and labs are double coated dogs, so their shedding is significant). I could have filled a mattress when my lab shed her coat🙂

Didn't get another 1 for a year and a half. So prayer for that for your baby....
I had a very large GSD male who I rescued at 2 years old. He was very social and I took him everywhere I went and never on a leash. He had a few run-ins with my roommates 'friends' over the years who were tweekers. Finally I got married and moved my wife in with us. I had to work out of town not long after she moved in and I told her that my boy would protect and she had no worries. This didn't seem to ease her as she wasn't ever raised around good dogs. A couple weeks of me being gone and she calls and says, " you'll never guess what your dog did." So of course I ask thinking he chewed up one of her shoes or something. Apparently at around 1AM he had come into the bedroom and woke her quietly by nudging her with his nose. She knew by his action that something wasn't right. He immediately went over to the back door and just pointed at it with his nose. She looked out and saw a creeper in our back yard. She went around to the side door and opened it said " go get him!" That poor bastard barely made it to the fence, but not over. The dog tore the ass out of the dude's jeans! The neighbor heard the commotion and met the dude on the other side of the fence with a baseball bat. He must have had a rough night in jail after that. Years later, I was redoing my landscaping and raked up a few pieces of denim. I can only imagine what happened to that guy's ass! My boy lived to be 13 and was anywhere from 115 and skinny to 140lbs. as on old man. He never had any formal training whatsoever. Btw, my wife LOVED that dog. She was the one holding him when he crossed the rainbow bridge. RIP Boss boy!

My mom had a massive Shepherd that was a beer distributor gaurd dog. At one point someone broke into her house and stole a gun and she woke up to a shattered window, blood all through the house, dog missing, gun missing. She called the cops who said they had the gun and the dog and the dog had mauled the guy who broke in to a pulp after disarming him. Dude spent 6 months in the regional hospital and the dog recovered the gun when he was done with him.

She woke up shortly after the dog and guy went out the window but him and the dog we're gone so she called the police and stayed in the home to meet them. I was 2 at the time so I won't pretend to remember but Knowing Jesse (the GSD) he had a reputation for letting people into the beer distributor and holding them there for as long as 5 hours until the morning shift arrived. When my uncle died people came and told us stories about that dog years after he died at 17 years old of cancer. I wouldn't be surprised if he didn't fuss until the man got in and then mauled him. That was kind of his style.
One more quick clarification, she says she called right after, and then again about 12 hours later after work. First call was when it happened, second call was to see if they found the dog or gun.. the second call they had found Jesse and the intruder. (They had found him earlier but Jesse was pounded and he was hospitalized in the mean time).

Just found this, really liked the video. I’m a petite woman and wanted a good family dog that looked intimidating so I got a female rottie. Best dog I ever had, very well obedience trained. Later I got a yorkiepoo (initially 1lb, maxed at 5 lbs). She was great with the Yorkie & other small dogs I had, good with other dogs & people she met. But she would watch to make sure things were ok. She stood stock still at my great-aunts side when my aunt started losing her balance, if my aunt coughed the rott would stand & look at her until my aunt told her she was ok. When my daughter & her boyfriend were arguing she went & stood between them which made them stop. I never taught her to be a guard dog. She let the Yorkie think he was top dog & would let him win at tug-of-war (really cute to watch). She had her CGC, first leg of tracking and obedience certificates and a Therapy Dog certificate. She changed a lot of peoples minds about Rottweilers. I always tell people it generally isn’t the breed that’s bad, it’s people who make them bad (either bad breeders or people who don’t socialize and train their dogs).

They are trained well and socialized well (via my training exclusively) and are big mush-pots until threatened or they perceive a threat to me. They are wonderful with kids. So, thank you!!

One key characteristic of the Bullmastiff that wasn’t mentioned is that Bullmastiffs rarely bark. That makes them very easy to live with.

The bullmastiff don't bark without a reason once she barks I know someone is in the premises. They are loving and very protective of their owners. I love her so much.
I had a male GSD I lost last August. He weighed 104 at the last vet visit. He was BIG. I miss that sense of security, even though he had a tender heart and was a lover, not a fighter, people would see him and form an "opinion". I would walk down any dark alley with him and know I was safe.

Thank you for sticking up for women! I am a single mom and have a male bull mastiff/ American Bulldog mix who weighs usually around 105lbs and is 26" at the withers. He is a BIG DOG ! He's very powerful & protective. I adopted him @ 7 wks. He has only been trained by me with positive reinforcement. With one word he knows to back off and sit alert at my side waiting command. Also with one word he knows to protect us. He's had to do this on one occasion and preformed like the hero we know he is! He prevented serious harm to me! I love this big guy and yes, I am a woman with complete loving control of my dog. I also did it on my own! His first 3 years of life I worked with him patiently 6+hrs a day. Most training done while playing. Yes, a confident women with a trained & loved companion has all the control she needs.

I had a large 140# Bullmastiff. I rescued him at about 1 year old. Went through obedience, the trainer wanted him to be a therapy dog. He never left my side. I would walk him without a leash and would never go more than five feet away. For the first month he never barked. Thought he was deaf. Great family dog. Everyone in my neighborhood loved him. I never thought he would be a great protection dog, he seemed to docile. Until one night when I was walking him off leash around midnight. I heard a guy yell behind me. I turned to look and a questionable guy behind me, Cerberus had him cornered at a brick fence behind me. I called Cerberus, he came back to me and the guy decided to walk in a different direction.
While being a very lazy dog he always went to the door and sat next to my wife or kids when they opened the front door. Never had to bark, his presence was a sufficient deterrent. I lost him after 3 years to cancer a few years ago. Still trying to recover. Best dog ever. I will be getting another. Unfortunately my boxer/golden mix needs to be in a single dog home. He had a hard time accepting other dogs after we lost Cerberus.
The best dog that ever owned me was half German shepherd and half Doberman. Very territorial, he saved my son's life, guarded the house (and his cars!), was incredibly smart, independent but loving and loyal. And I got him from the shelter at Fort Hood for the price of a rabies shot. Best $7 I ever spent! He was the best of both breeds.

We had a male Rottweiler who lived 15 years, never neutered. He had a powerful bark and a scary charge. I trained him (just basic commands) when I was only 10 years old. He was kind and patient with my little sister and our numerous small animals. Best guard and family dog hands down. ❤

I’ve owned three of these dogs on the list. I can’t say enough about each breed.
1) English Mastif is absolutely at your side at all times and totally loyal to a fault. Super loving and great around kids other than occasionally toppling toddlers over due to their great mass.
2) Rotties take up the aggression a notch over the mastif. They are super loving and big teddy bears to family members. Super smart and obedient to their master or handler.
3) Boxers are absolutely the reigning clowns of the dog world. Never a dull moment with one around. Loyal loving and aim to please their master or handler and super protective of small children and the ladies.
I have a now 14 month old GSD Boxer mix, his mother is a GSD X Boxer and father a GSD, making my pup around 25% Boxer but he really really loves kids and the ladies! I find it an amazing mix just like a Shepherd but bonds a little bit more to other people and is a bigger clown in general but means business when it comes to it!
I really admire your common sense and practical assessment of the suitability of each breed to be a family defender. As a retired Teacher and lifelong useful dog owner I give you 10 out of 10!
I love this video so much! I’m a 5’1” women of ~120lbs. Its been hard trying to decide which dog breed to consider getting and I’ve definitely been worried about getting a dog which is too big, since I’ve only ever had small dogs. Very encouraging to read the comments and listen to the support for single women to own some of these dogs. Thank you so much!
If I may, I would encourage you to look at Rottweilers. As far as all of the logistics that come with dog ownership, they're easy - minimal grooming, not prone to sensitive stomach issues(although prone to overeating, so don't free-feed), reasonable exercise demands, readily trainable, very affectionate, and they aren't a super exotic breed that's hard to find or expensive to purchase. They are innately territorial, but they seem to intuitively trust their owner's judgement, so they won't just sit growling when your best friend comes for lunch. They socialize very easily and settle quickly with other dogs, both big and small. They're super affectionate, and will become your bestest buddy in a hurry. They're also the first thing most people picture of when they think "guard dog", which is a deterrent in and of itself.
If I were looking today, I'd be looking for a female(personal preference) purebred Rottweiler from a good breeder that had breeding stock readily traced back to German bloodlines. German standards for registering dogs to breed make Canada and the US look like a joke, and it shows.
Easily in my top five favourite breeds, and probably the easiest dog to handle by the average Joe/Jane on that list by a fair margin.
German Shepherd dogs are the breed that I would recommend, loyal, obedient, protective, intelligent,it’s a dog many women choose , matter of fact it’s the 3rd smartest dog breed in the world
Im a life long German Shepherd owner and also 5'2" female. They are fairly easy to handle and make great companions. I have had both males and females and it really is an amazing breed. So smart and so loyal (You will find you have a new shadow with one) My current female is fun, goofy, playful and oh so loving. She is friendly and playful with other people and dogs who she knows and aloof with those she does not. However, if anyone even seems a remote threat she is fierce. She patrols the house and sets up strategic watch points when everyone is asleep, particularly the access to the stairs. I never taught her that, she does it all on her own. In fact, my other German Shepherds from years past have been the same. They love their human and truly want to take care of you. Just make sure they are properly socialized and you will have an amazing dog you will wonder how you lived without one. I love all dogs and all breeds, have owned mutts and other breeds too, but my favorite is hands down the German Shepherd.
My GSD is going on 13..and he's still going strong. You never have to encourage them to be watchful...this is who they are. Yet his best buddy in the world is a tiny cockapoo. He cares for her as if she were his own. lovely dog!

I loved my Rotties. Great dogs. And no one would mess with me when I walked my 100# Rottie down the road. We were an awesome team and anyone who says women can't handle them has some other issues we won't go into.

My GSD lived until she was 17 years old. No hip problems or other maladies, just old age. She was extremely smart, loving with the family, and a great protector. Only downside with this breed is the shedding, but that's easy to overlook since they are such great family members. Great list.
17!? Wow, that's great! What did you feed her? Burt Ward developed a food for large breeds, and claimed it helped their Great Danes achieve much longer than normal lifespans. I have a preference for large dogs, so I am always trying to do what I can to keep ours healthy, but the downside is generally that they don't tend to live as long as smaller dogs. (Though I find the same can be said of most species, really, including humans. Most of the really old folks tend to be smaller in stature, while giants seem to have lifespans limited to only a few decades by comparison....)
The GSD we had when I was young lived to be only 10, and his father only 7, so I was happy to get 14 solid years from my Rhodesian Ridgeback. We got 16 from our Aussie Shepherd before we had to let him go when his nasal tumors made it too hard for him to continue, and 16 from the Briard, but those were the longest lived dogs we've had so far.
@@UpRoaryus didn’t feed her anything special really. Canned dog food, and some table food once in awhile as a treat. She was just a healthy dog. Lots of exercising (running, playing), and lots of love.

I had a Rottie years ago. Rescue. Totally changed my mind about the breed. She was amazing, loved my wife and daughter to no end, and was absolutely fearless. Bone cancer took her at ten.
My aunt is 5'2 and has always had large male rotties. The size of the dog doesn't matter if the dog is actually trained.
My wife is 4'9" 105 lbs.....she had two rotties at one point. Great dogs in the right hands.

I was a single mom and had a 120 pound rottweiler. I never had a problem controlling him and he was the best dog I've ever had. He lived to be 14 years old which was such a blessing. Excellent family dog and protector and very smart too! I miss my Brodie boy immensely!

My Daughters GSD saved her during home invasion. She was home alone with her male German Shepherd, the middle of the night a guy on drugs broke thru the kitchen door (even though the dog was barking like crazy) when he gained entry, her GSD went to work and tore the guy up. He managed to get back out. Took the cops a few days to find him, but they did. Thanks to her naturally protective boy, my daughter is okay today. Could have turned out very differently if she didn't have him. He's our hero
Akita. The most amazing creature I have had the privilege of owning or working with.
Mine also doubled as livestock protection dogs. They have a very undeserved reputation of not getting along with livestock. The truth is, when properly trained and socialized, they are phenomenal livestock protectors.
I have a 4 year old male. Absolutely incredible dog and definitely not for beginners. Stupidly strong in both the physical and stubbornness.
I still have a heartbreak every time I think about my Akita. The best dog I ever had.
GSD! My six month old female has already proven her fearlessness. I was at a red light she was in the back seat with the window rolled down. Man ran up to my car and was being really aggressive and she growled and barked and lunges at him through the window. Man damn near pissed himself. So thankful for my GSD💕
I was parked at a grocery store it was about 12 AM , at the same time a cop was going into the store and my GSD was in the car barking and cop looks at me and says" You don't need a alarm in your car, nobody is getting into that car to steal it with that shepard in it!" 😄

I can well believe it, I had a mate, he was a bit of a joker, one dark evening he rang the doorbell and hid in the garage. I went out with my 2 year old Newfoundland, my friend jump out on me from about 10 foot away, the Newf took one step back out of shock then went like I had never seen her, full on, I was taken aback at how proctective she became. If he had continued towards me she would have had him. lol she was as soft as a bun, last dog I would have expected it from.

Over my lifetime I’ve had Rotts, Neos, a Bullmastiff, but my best guard dog turned out to be my Great Pyrenees. He patrolled the perimeter consistently and stayed on the look out. I suppose we were his ‘sheep’. Currently have a Cane Corso and a Dogo Argentino puppy. The Dogo looks promising, nine weeks old and it’s obvious he is highly intelligent. And yes, I am a woman.

Now that he is grown, I will swear by the Dogo as well. He observes me intently and tries to imitate what I do. Although sometimes he makes a mess of it,LOL. The Cane Corso is an escape artist, which I have observed in Canes before. Not stereotyping breeds, btw, just talking about individuals. All my dogs have had good qualities.

I have a Malinois who was abandoned and didn't get much formal training in her developmental puppy stage. It's been a chore and quite stressful to get her to where she is now, but considering I've only had her for two months, I think her progress is phenomenal. That said, she has fit in with the family structure as though she's always been with us, and her dedication to protecting my daughter while on walks is better than any security system. No one (with common sense) is going to come near her.
we have a pair of sister Malinois that are now 14 months old. when I step out the front door, one of them will immediately begin to run back and forth along our chain link fence, growling, and I am sure that she is warning any prowler that may be out there, that they had stand back.

@@greatness15 mine are now a bit over two years old and both 'natural guard dogs' with one of the sisters being much more aggressive than the other (both are very alert). however, they need a lot of personal attention and room to burn off energy. my yard is big so they have room to exercise, but as I work can only spend 30 minutes per day with them, and I can see that is not enough, as they begin to chew anything they can find, etc as a substitute for attention.
Not a single mom, but about to live alone, will definitely get me a rottie as soon as I move out of my parents, I just love these dogs so much ❤️❤️
Our boxer was 16 when she passed away. We got her when I was 3, so it was like losing a sister when she died. She was always fiercely protective of all of us. Even without any formal training, she was an excellent guard dog. There was one time when 2 of my brothers friends were on our porch teasing me through the screen door. My boxer, Ginger, was sitting next to me steady looking back and forth from me to them. Thinking it would scare them, I finally yelled, "sick 'em!" That dog knocked down the screen door and chased those boys all the way home. She never bit them. But she did scare the life out of them and they never bothered me like that again. 😂❤
First sorry for your lost,mine passed at 12.That breed only lives to 8 -10yrs.After that your one of the few who are lucky alot of health problems in breed.Only heard of a few made it to 12 or beyond.Have to say this is to good owners doing thier part with ck ups and the right care.
Thx for including the GSD. My guy lets small children at the park run up to him n grab him n hug him around his neck (small kids especially r just drawn to him) but the 2 times guys walked in the house unannounced (1 to fix an a/c and one a friend of my husbands my guy had never met) he was on them but didn’t attack - I could see him looking to me and assessing for himself while being “ready” and emitting a low bad ass growl until I told him it was ok. After this he sat at my feet the whole time just watching. This is my 8th GSD through my childhood to now and they’ve always been like this. Just be ready to visit the groomers for a defurminator session n I couldn’t live without my defurminator comb - and my robovac 😂.they’re worth it though!!
I’ve owned & loved 3 Dobies & 2 Shepard’s. Both are wonderful, smart & loyal dogs. They are great with kids & highly protective of family members. Shepard’s do shed quite a bit, which may be an issue for family members with allergies. Be sure to source your dog from a recognized breeder and advanced training is a great idea, as all owners should want their dogs to be good ambassadors for their breed. This is the best way to ensure harmonious family integration & behavior. These dogs get incredibly attached to their family’s & owner’s should anticipate a life-long relationship with these pups.
I worked with the German Shepard during my time in the US Army and currently have a 10 year old companion… I know of no dog breed that brings more to the table when considering the complete package… my home will never be without one…

Ive wanted a Rottie for a while as a new member of my family (at home) of two (my daughter and I). This just sealed the deal for me. Litter is due in March 2022 and should be ready to come home in June or July 💕 Thank you for your suggestion to single mothers. Screw anyone that doubts what we are capable of- we clearly do it all already and a dog would fit into our lifestyle very well.
Good choice. I don't own a dog but have gotten interested lately. Rottie is my number one pick.
My GSD is so in tune to where I am at all times. He puts himself between me & someone he doesn't know... even other dogs. He travels with me everywhere. When outside he waits until I go in 1st before he comes in behind me. When he goes outside to potty he will come find me 1st thing if I'm not where I usually am. Sometimes I'll be taking a bathroom break & he'll peek in just to see where I am. He is more patient than my husband & is the most intelligent breed I've ever owned & trained. He amazes me everyday with something new I see he does on his own. Its like he understands sentences & knows what in thinking. I am amazed by his intuitive behaviors. I dont know if it's the GSD breed or just my GSD... but I love how loyal he is & how protective I feel when he's with me.

Thank you for this video. My purebred German Shepherd is 3 months old today. I got him to protect our home. He is brave and courageous at this age and I know that he will grow up to be the guard dog that I have always wanted.

My little lady, RIP baby girl, was a most ferocious family defender, but in turn -- the silliest goofball you could ever want. She was the perfect protector for my (then) infant daughter. Bodyguard and personal clown/play mate. And as a 5'0 woman (granted one that can bench a VW Bug) I had no issues controlling her. Definitely going to share this. Excellent info!!!

Have owned three rottweilers (all rescues.) As a touring audio engineer, I would leave no other dog alone with my wife and kid while I am gone. That 0-60 is he main reason. My wife cannot only control him but he sees her as the ONE to protect. I allow myself for "fun times," what she says GOES, and RIGHT NOW.
it is really hard for me to imagine my life without a rottweiler next to me, curled around me, butt wiggling. My neighbor had to get rid of s wonderful shepherd, if I did not already have a pit/boxer mix, we wold have had two German dogs.
Note to future rottweiler owners. The first 18 months is nuts (and stressful,) run them, work them, train them. it will be the most rewarding experience ever. They are smart, loyal, and never forget.

Ive seen 2 in 35 years in dogs. One was muzzled and crazy. The other was stunning looks and behaviour. i ride with a flash light. Blinds the guy and gets my dog lean time

With the right training they can be amazing dogs. I know a guy who has a german shepherd, a Belgian malinois and an American Akita, all males and they get along great.

long time dog owner and have had several different breeds including several GSDs. I have three beaucerons and for me they are best all round protection dogs. Need no training, the smartest dogs I have ever had. They will challenge someone on their property but will quickly stand down if they see you do not perceive the person as a threat. And two are great frisbee dogs. I could go on but anyone who is looking for a loyal, highly intelligent dog should give the breed a look.
We recently rescued a Great Pyrenees/Mastiff. Amazing dog, and thanks to the Mastiff side no grooming issues. I could spend hours watching our new girl work our large yard.
We had a Working Collie German Sheppard growing up that was a super home protector. He even knew I was not supposed to run and would grab me by the pants if I tried running. He also would flatten kids who he thought were pushing to fast in the wagon. Yet he rough housed with my younger sister who had no limitations. A great dog!
I love German Shepherds. I had one growing up. She was amazing. Smart, athletic, very good at sensing friends vs. trouble. Great watchdog. Never had to worry about solicitation at our house!

I call Malinois 24/7 dogs, always ready to be active, it seems. They truly are very high energy and stamina types. I'm a professional dog trainer. My German Shorthair Pointer Chow Mix is now 16. She was an amazing protection trained dog for me. She helped me train dogs and people for most of her life. She was worth tens of thousands at one time. Or Priceless to me! I want to clone her. I plan to get her DNA collected soon, than store it until I'm ready and the neices go down.

Great list! I especially liked that you pointed out that the dogs needed socialization and basic obedience training, otherwise they can be uncontrollable. I have owned both Akita's and a Rottweiler over the years. Both ended up protecting my family. The funny thing is that my mother-in-law became unable to live on her own and moved in with my family. At first she was terrified of our female Rottweiler and insisted that I had to get rid of her (being from the Philippines she was scared of dogs that large). However, after about three to four months she discovered that she had a new friend and protector. Any time we had a visitor in the house I knew that Tasha was going to be right at her feet keeping an eye on them. Tasha knew that she was weak and unable to protect herself so Tasha was right there to protect her.
If she dared to suggest I had to get rid of my dog she'd be the first to go.

thrilled to see the beauceron on this list! they're one of my all time favorites, although going back to what you said about rottweilers and women, that was actually one of my biggest apprehensions. I don't have a lot of experience working with dogs that have real drive, so I didn't feel confident starting with a dog I can't physically control if I failed with the training aspect. So for women who don't feel quite ready for that much dog, I'd recommend heelers. Heelers can be a bit much on the exercise requirements but they're super velcro, protective, territorial, and the somewhat neurotic nature of them makes them extremely vigilant. I've got a 50 pound male who's crazy strong but I also know that if need be I can just pick him up lol.
I love how you mentioned the Presa having a character similar to the APBT. I have a Dogo and a Presa now. We were walking in the woods the other day and a man was behind us , walking at steady pace , she was right by my side and kept looking behind at the man until he passed us . Any noise outside or around the house she’s there ! She is absolutely brilliant with our children too . Love her to bits xx

Absolute true love, Rottweiler. I adopted one from the shelter. Had a horrible neighbor issue and wanted protection. He was between 1 to 2 yrs old, rescued at a drug house. Abused and seriously underweight. Found out I was pregnant shortly after I got him. He was the perfect Nana dog to my baby. Loved and protected her beyond imagination. Too many sweet stories. I never had to question about his guarding ability. He was always right there and didn't have to do much to get his point across to any possible threat. Even though he was treated horribly before adoption, he was only a sweet, goofy, loveable and protective part of my family.

You hit the Boxer on the head. Our girl is protective, loving and hilarious at times. However, I have never had an opportunity to see her in action for protection. But telling by the way she greets people at the door when they come in, she would be a great protector. She is also so loving with our French Bulldog puppy. 10/10 would recommend lol
I had a Belgian Sheppard, and he was a great companion. He had high drive and energy, but never had a problem with it. He was very well behaved, always stuck by the family side, never aggressive, and we lived in an apartment. If you are careful with the education and socialization, they are great family dogs. Not for a novice owner, though.
Am a student and looking to get one a Belgian Malinois , actually mainly need it as a pet but also as a guard dog due to high crime rate here. But there’s no way I can train it for protection around here .so can they still serve as guard dog without any form of protection training? ……, I can give it all the exercise necessary
My parents always had German Shepherds growing up on the farm and I can honestly say that they are on the top of my list for dog guards, definitely. I’m in my 40’s and have never “owned” ( I don’t know if anyone can truly own another animal) a dog but I’ve had experience with German Shepherds and Akita’s living on my parents farm. I’ve heard that Golden Retriever, Labrador, or even mixes of this breeds are great for first time dog owners. Love this channel, man! High quality video, editing, and audio are fantastic. While you list this video as dogs that do not need any training, I am glad that you emphasize the fact that all dogs need plenty of socialization and basic obedience training. I have been an amateur dog trainer for over 50 years and have trained many dogs by first training their owners. The Akita and the Rottweiler are two of my favorite breeds, and both have shown that they have what it takes if trouble comes looking for you. One night I was woke by my male Akita when he put his paw in my face. When I let him outside to do his business all hell broke out. I grabbed a flashlight and went to see what was wrong but did not see anything. It was in the morning that I found a large chunk of pants left as a present from the intruder that was in our yard. Years later my frail mother-in-law moved in with my family, at the time I had a female Rottweiler and that dog scared her to death. However, in a few months the two were best friends. Any time there was someone new in the house you could find Tasha laying at the feet of my mother-in law. I would have hated to be someone that had ill intentions toward her. Tasha would even check on me when I would help her out of a stuffed chair when she was having problems standing. Please, keep emphasizing that all dogs need basic training. I have seen too many disasters because the dogs did not have basic obedience training.

I have just gotten a young one. Whatever room we are in, he sleeps by the door, right up on it.
I have about a quarter acre fenced in for my dogs. My Pyr walks the fence line several times a day doing border patrol. Beautiful breed.
Asti Jay Mine doesn’t believe in border patrol because he thinks he owns everything the light touches. He can clear our 6 foot fence and trot down the street like he’s a pretty little flower.

You could've added the Boerboel (South African Mastiff) on the list, cause it's a great family (cuddle) dog, would die for you for protecting you, doesn't have extreme energy levels.
However, it's a must for the Boerboel to have an area to guard and should not be kept indoors all the time
I've owned four Akitas. They have all put themselves in danger to save me. They do get along with other animals. Protected my cat's too

I have a 9 months old male entire rotti Hans , attend obedience weekly since he was 14 weeks old - still going I handle him so well no worries he’s stable , it’s what you put into your dog that’s what you get out and Hans is a pleasure as a single mum with three kids - he’s our protector and part of the family!
My German Shepherd Bear was a love bug, but would also love nothing more than to protect the family and small children.

We have had 4 Giant Schnauzers and they are one of the best companions I have ever owned. They are highly intelligent and a very devoted family companion, great with our kids, grandkids and great grandkids! High energy, very strong dogs but very obedient and easily trained!
One I think you forgot is also great is a boerboel mastiff,a Velcro dog that very protective

Thought I would update my post here. I did buy 2 German shepherds, a male and female, and have had them for over a year. I love this breed. For my personal needs so far, they are the best dog I can have, I believe. I have owned many breeds in my 63 years of being on this earth including the GSD and I have returned to the GSD. I believe I will keep this breed for the rest of my life, for me nothing tops the GSD over all.

My wife had a rottweiler when I met her. Lived a bit over 13 years before he had to be put down. For a solid 11 years he was very active yet extremely aggressive when he needed to be but once the arthritis came it really took it's toll R.I.P Moose ❤
How where you around him if he was a untrained animal. If he is civil there is no way unless you train it.
I picked up a Rottie years ago out in Barstow California. He was running with a bunch of feral dogs that were running around the area at the time. Not gonna lie, when I first saw him I thought I was done for. He was skin and bones but came running at me so fast that I didn't really have a time to react. He leapt, hit me square in the chest, knocked me down... and then nearly drowned me in slobber. Poor guy still had a puppy collar on that his skin had started to grow over. Found a vet that helped me out financially by only charging me for anesthesia and x-rays, who surgically had to remove his collar. That boy was one of the best and sweetest dogs I had the honor of having in my life. Even half starved, he shared his food with a kitten I had at the time. It's been 30 years and I still miss him.

The society has label woman as weak and incapable, therefore many think we cant handle a strong athletic dog breed, which is totally false. I have had 2 German shepherd growing up, never was afraid of being with them two giant guardians. Now that I am a young adult, I would like to have a guardian for home protection. Also because I prefer larger size dogs in general. And I came across a beautiful Rottie puppy, first thing the store owner said was: You want to own a Rottweiler? Maybe you should go for a golden retriever or a cat. Rottweiler is very aggressive, they aren’t for woman.” And I just laughed 😂 .... Imagine how ignorant this person was.
I have an Australian Shepherd and she is PERFECT for this job. Aussies are extremely loyal, protective, and downright smart. I swear mine knows what I’m saying half the time. They don’t adapt well to strangers which makes them perfect for home protection. Once she gets to know a person, she will love them for a lifetime but this takes time. So any intruder to our our would be greeted with barking, growling, and teeth. I doubt she would bite but she is pretty intimidating to strangers. I love my Aussie. Most cuddly and loyal dog I’ve ever had.

Having worked in a couple of animal shelters over the years, I can tell you which breeds consistently topped the dogbite case list. The Dachshund, Chow Chow, Cocker Spaniel, Dalmatian. Not necessarily in that order. I don’t know statistics elsewhere, so I can’t say whether local bloodlines had any bearing; I doubt it. This is south Louisiana.
Cocker Spaniels are mean. I’ve witnessed that myself.

I absolutely love my Cane Corso's and my Rottweiler. My Corso's are serious protectors. My Rottweiler is also a great protection dog. She is also a great ranch dog and herds cattle on drives as well as protecting them on the drive from predators
P.S. I am 59 years old and have no problem handling my 2 Cane Corso's and my Rottweiler
