I was exposed to Kangals as a kid. Even though they guard livestock well, they guard children too. But they are not pets, they need to work and need lots of territory.

@2centavos It's not recommended. You may get the odd case, but you'd have to walk them a lot and I heard off leash can be problematic because they almost have no recall.

I got a 6 month old kangal from a rescue 2 and a half years ago. Before this, hadn't heard of the breed. Dont live on a farm, but have a large yard. Was a lot of work, but now he does awesome as a family dog. He gets exercise playing with my shep/pit mix in the yard and our nightly walks. They are independent, not people pleasers like my shep/pit mix. As long as you are willing to put the time and effort in, they can be great family dogs. I feel better knowing he's here to protect my family while I'm at work.

I have an Anatolian shepherd/Kangal. They’re fine as pets, if raised as a pet since puppyhood. Definitely no worse than a lot of other dogs on this list. They dig a lot and I wouldn’t get one as an inexperienced dog owner, but overall good family dogs that do fine in the burbs

My Doberman once saved me from a kidnapper
    Story:
My granny, dog and I went to a shop. We left him sitting outside the shop. My granny went inside and so did I. I stayed in between the door playing with my dog. My granny went somewhere to the back of the shop. A man just picked me up from behind and started to walk away with me. My dog started to bark but he was tied to a pole. The man started to run as my dog started to alert people around us. He wiggled his way out of his chain collar. He ran and jumped up on the man and grabbed his arm. My granny ran out got me off the ground and got the dog. (this story is from half of my memory and the other half is from what my granny saw )

Been watching your docs for a good while now and I honestly think they helped me pick the breed, so I just got so hyped to see Rotties topped your list. Couldn't agree more they are the number 1 dog that I've had because they are big and intimidating but can be gentle without hesitation when around smaller pups or kids. #1 Giant Schnauzer
    #2 Standard Schnauzer
    #3 German Shepherd
I grew up with GSD'S. They're ABSOLUTELY easy to train. And like the schnauzer, guarding seems to come natural. The only reason I switched up is that Schnauzers dont shed. They as well are fantastic family dogs. Leary of people who they consider outside of their pack.
I currently own a miniature schnauzer and he has all the same attributes as a Giant or standard. Hes fearless and relentless at guarding the home.
I once had a homeless person say, what is that little dog going to do if I break in? I said, hes going to warn me that you're there. Then your going to meet my 12 gauge Mossberg. The look on this man's face changed drastically.
Although I do feel that the mini schnauzer is the right dog for us currently, with my job the way it is..I do plan on getting a Standard Schnauzer in the near future.

Solid list. Everyone will have different experiences that produce a different list. For me, number 1 will always be boxers. Absolute clowns when they aren’t in protection mode. Mine made me laugh everyday. Serious mode was very intense.. all business.
When he died, I was determined to get another boxer. Plans don’t always work the way u want tho, and I couldn’t turn down rescuing a pit bull. I always said I’d never own a pit, but I had the breed all wrong. She has the sweetest temperament of any dog I’ve had personal experience with. Boxers still have my heart, but the pit is a VERY close second.

Kangal's are terrific! I used to have coyote as well as black vulture problems (killing and eating my calves) kangal's stopped this problem. Extra benefit was they are also terrific with children!😁
My grandson is 3 now, grew up around my kangal. Best buddy's and kangal can be Very affectionate as well. Would not try to make this dog a house pet though! Mine needs to be in the wide open spaces. Stays on high alert to predictors or even burglars on the property. Just when you think he's asleep,,,,, he'll leap up and run like a madman because he sees a coyote prob. A mile away.

I have seen mine go after those coyotes and snap their necks like they were a chicken neck.
Mine go to work at dusk, partially sleep during day.
These dogs are built for speed and strength. As long as they have livestock to protect.
Mine are pretty lovable with me, some aren’t that I’ve seen.
Don’t try to make them into a lapdog though, they need a job...

St Bernard has my heart but I have had one who would do protection as well as snuggle. I raised a coulpe great Pyrs who were totally amazing. My female kept breaking the second floor window and sit and wait for me when I would go some where. Turns out she had chased a drugged up burgler thru the window. Shortly after that he was arrested for attempted murder after a long shoot out with swat. Currently #1 is my dog Rory a labradoodle. Super smart, athletic, protective, trustworthy and unconditional love never ending

In the last twenty years I’ve had 4 Catahoula. Really cool to see the breed get some love. Although I would disagree that they don’t make good home protection dogs. One of the reasons I fell in love with them. My truck, my house, my yard, and my wife are all so very safe. Having a well bred Catahoula is like carrying a loaded weapon.

I fell in love with a breed that was developed in the 1990s - the King Shepherd - a combination of German Shepherd, Great Pyrenees and Alaskan Malamute. They are smart, easy to train, gentle, alert, protective, playful. Great with kids, love to swim and hike, and affectionate companions. They are headturners - every time we go out they get a lot of attention for their size and beauty. They DO need to be brushed a lot bc they shed a lot. A good grooming twice a year is helpful in keeping their big fur coats in check.

I looked into many of the breeds on your list before deciding on the Ridgeback. Just a few of the reasons, little to no shed, no drool , little to no bark. very strong , extremely loyal, very protective and if he needs to go into action you will never know it’s coming, very clean, no bad odor, very good looking, friendly you don’t have to worry about him hurting other dogs or people. Some of the breeds on your list most of us should not own and belong on a large ranch so they can work. Great video thanks.

Have owned and trained Rotties 20 yrs and love them, but in our current setting, our now 6 mos Anatolian pup has been excellent with early obedience and socialization & definitely coming into his natural guardian instincts while being gentle with our farm cat and our young child.

I'd love you to see you do a video on the standard poodle. I'm currently waiting for a litter to be born, which I'll be getting a pup from. This breed surprised me so much. They are so intelligent and majestic when they are allowed to reach their true potential, rather than be primped and preened and made to be pretty. I can't wait to welcome the new member of our family. I'm a mother of four kids, and this is our first pet. I'll also be working with the pup to eventually get her into therapy work, hopefully for the local children's hospital.

My neighbors Doberman came through her glass door at a sprint when she was being attacked in her yard. The dog cut its self to shreds but that didn’t stop it from defending its owner. When we heard the commotion and ran out, the dog recognized us and that the threat was gone as the attacker retreated to his car (and was later caught at the hospital where he went to seek treatment for his multiple wounds) and was immediately calm and submissive allowing us to get the authorities and aid our neighbor. He saved her life without regard for his own. Great respect for the breed.

my first ever dog was an American Staffordshire pitbull terrier and she was with me since I was born (actually she arrived just 1 day before I was born) and she was my best friend, she never bit me, she never growled, she never showed any aggressive behavior, she would let me get away with murder. so yea I think they are amazing dogs for families with young children, that's why they were so popular as family-friendly dogs in the 19th century. And no I am not saying that the pit bull attacks and deaths are fake but they are caused either because the dog is not trained, not socialized, not neutered, mentally ill or it is abused and that can happen to every single dog breed.

Catahoula Leopard Dogs are one of the most underrated breeds ever!!! I think it’s due in part to their isolation in their home state of Louisiana for centuries - they are Louisiana’s state dog. So glad to see them began to get the recognition they deserve!!!! By the way, another thing that sets them apart from many breeds is that they can climb trees!!!

Keeping in mind that I don't really need a working or defense dog, my top 5 dog breeds based on character, intelligence and looks are the following:
    1. Standard poodle (super sociable overall, extremely intelligent and very athletic)
    2. Old english sheepdog (basically the same reasons as the first one)
    3. Working line German shepherd (I've had three German shepherds and they are truly a great breed. Mine were show line and weren't as healthy, which is why they passed quite young)
    4. Giant Schnauzer (the most versatile big dog breed)
    5. Rottweilers
    Honorable mentions:
    Irish wolfhound
    English bulldog
    Akita inu

We have two Catahoula Leopard dogs and both are very protective and territorial. They meet you once and you're good but strangers best not come around. Both are about 70 pounds and RIDICULOUSLY athletic. These dogs will run straight up a tree and they have no fear. They work and play harder than any dog I've ever had. I've had boxers, heelers, labs, etc. The Catahoula beats them all.

I own a young ridgeback (just turned 1 on the 29th of december) He's a lovely fun dog. Not only that but in the last few months he has taken on the role as sworn protector of me and my family and our property. They're born guard dogs. I think his finest hour so far has been when he stood up for me end of last month just before christmas. He spotted a drunk guy heading our way and began to tug back trying to keep me away. Eventually he got far too close for his liking and without making a sound stood in front of me putting himself in between me and the guy and just stared at him. He didnt move an inch and once the guy came over and petted him he relaxed. He didnt move however he held his ground and after that I feel even safer with him than I already did. I love my Cooper :)! You couldn't ask for a better large family dog.

Giant Schnauzer, we are on our 4th Giant! They are wonderful guardians but very gentle with kids and get along well with other dogs if socialized! I have one female now who I have trained as my service dog. She weighs in at 89 lbs and is a very loving companion but would defend us and our home to the death if we were threatened. We are seniors so it is important to us to have a good watchdog. She makes a huge noise and she is black which is a deterrent in itself! She is very gentle with our grand kids and great grandkids. They love to please and are hard workers but very strong dogs so must have obedience training for older people because they are so strong.

Over the last 30 years I have progressed from owning small dogs in the suburbs (English Bulldog, Shitzu) to medium dogs (lab, German Shepherd, Blue Heeler) and giant dogs (Great Pyrenees, Kangal) on a 10-acre farm. I currently have a female GP, a male adult Kangal, their 9-month-old son, and a 3-month-old female Kangal, and they all stay in the house with me and up to 30 farm cats that come in and out as I work from home, and we patrol the farm perimeter at least twice a day and they get their exercise running around the pasture while I do farm chores. I don't keep them outside because I don't have a heavy predator problem and our patrols and letting the dogs loose when they sound off at night is enough for them to protect my sheep and poultry, and I like having them with me in the house for companionship and alarm and protection.
My take on keeping the Kangal purely as a pet or family guardian is that a) it takes a very experienced dog owner who can act like a pack leader consistently to do it, b) it takes a lot of time and commitment to give the dogs the exercise and space they DESERVE and WANT to really open up and run a couple of times a day -- even with a 10 acre, 500-yard long pasture that they can cover in SECONDS, c) they are superb guard dogs yet very sensitive and loving and are great around small animals and kids with INITIAL OBSERVATION AND CORRECTION, and d) there are a lot more suitable breeds for the average family in the suburbs to use, and owning one with no backyard is asking for trouble and unfair to the dogs.
Sure, you could make it work with a consistent routine and letting them run circles in your backyard and at the dog park however often you take them, but if you ever watched a couple of these dogs running wide open on spotting something or how they play fight by tearing at each others' tails and legs and biting at throats until fur flew all while having the time of their lives, you would see that these incredible dogs really are best on a farm or other kind of acreage, playing only with dogs they know that won't challenge them. Otherwise, it'd be like owning a Ferrari and just using it to drive around the block. Bad for the Ferrari's motor, and would probably get old for you after a while.

My fave breed is the Labrador Retriever. I was first introduced to the Lab at a dog beach where a buddy of mine used to take his Labs and I found out that another dog better not come between them and their ball. lol I couldn't believe it when a large Rotweiler tried to forcibly take the ball from one of them and I've never seen a dog spring into action with such aggressive action then turn it off in a heart beat. One of his black labs was so quick and fierce the Rotty whimpered and backed down fast. Labs are super smart and if you get one that has good spirit then you can train it to do whatever. They're not normally considered a protector but I saw those dogs get between my buddy and danger on more than one occasion. Plus these dogs were super loving and great with the family . Beware though, they are a working dog and need exercise and they do shed!

Cane Corsos are the best!!! Great guard dogs & well-loved by friends and family since they’re easy to train. Perfect temperament around kids, too. My corso loves people more than other dogs, he’s not aggressive at all but a bit shy/antisocial lol. Was a bit worried about handling one cos of their size but they’re great dogs for first time owners if you put in a bit of work to train & socialize them. They’re also great if you don’t have more than 30 minutes a day for walks- one walk a day + reviewing commands at night is all you need to stimulate them mentally & physically.

    2) Australian Shepherd-interacted with the breed here & there, and now live with my boyfriend’s Aussie mix. So silly, yet super intelligent! (oh and CUDDLES like a baby!)

My personal top 3, based on my experiences.
    1. Catahoula Leopard Dog - These are by far my favorite dog breed, and I currently own 2. They are truly the most instinctual and intelligent breed I’ve ever had. They are a great size, adaptable to many situations as long as you can meet their exercise needs.
    2. Rottweiler - I had 2 of these when I was younger that were unfortunately stolen from my house while we were away. Extremely trusting and gentle with an undersized 4th grader such as myself. When I was 9, 2 very large dogs had me cornered while I was outside alone and aggressively approaching me, until my Rott’s came and fought off the other dogs. Miss them so much.
    3. Labrador Retriever - I’ve had more of this dog than any other, and have been around them my whole life as they are extremely popular here. Have never met an aggressive lab and might be the friendliest dog I’ve ever been around.
For comparison, I’ve owned/currently owned one or more of the following: catahoulas, labs, rotts, Lhasa apso, shitzu, pit bulls, Dalmatian, cocker spaniel, golden retriever, golden doodle, chow, chihuahua, and blue heelers.

Mine is a Golden Labradoodle! I found by accident that he is an amazingly loyal dog with natural protection instincts. While at our regular training they were doing aggression training after so we stayed and watched and he went absolutely crazy as the trainers came around the circle. At home anyone coming to or by our apartment is warned with a completely different bark that puts one on noice not to mess around with us yet he is a total lap dog. I also have never really had to do recall training because he immediately returns when called no matter what.

Zeke, I'm new to your channel. I was looking for information on protection breeds, and found you :). I LOVE your "dogumentaries". I'm a dog lover, grew up with a Saint Bernard, so anything smaller is awkward for me. After watching your amazing videos, I am still considering a German Shepherd as my breed of choice. HOWEVER, you have very solid points about the Rottweiler, which is a close second for me. I didn't know anything about the Cane Corso or the Dogo Argentino until I watched your videos about them. I think you are doing a great work, keeping people informed about these important breeds. Might help some people think before they go out and buy a dog they can't handle. Fingers crossed. Peace!

German Shepherd Dogs (GSD) are excellent protectors and family pets. They are so smart it is sometimes hard to believe some of the things they know. They are ranked as the 3rd smartest dog in the world and they are also excellent with livestock. You really do get it all with a GSD. They should be in the top five of anyone’s list.

#2 Australian Shepherd. Extremely intelligent, very protective of their ppl and home.
#3 spot for me could be filled by any of a few breeds but I guess I’ll have to say Boston Terrier. I’m not really a small dog or a terrier person but it’s been my experience that it’s just hard to be around a Boston and not be in a good mood. They are bright, energetic and affectionate dogs.

A little late to the party with this suggestion but here goes...The Czech Working Line German Shepherd. I've known German Shepherd owners that went from American Show Line to Czech Line & were blown away by their new dog. Everything they already were familiar with regarding German Shepherds but amped up to 11...and they didn't think it was possible.

Glad to see the Bullmastiff in the top 5, they are amazing protectors and great with kids. They love their family and I pity anyone stupid enough to mess with a bullmastiffs family because it’s not ending well for them.

When I was 19 and growing up in the UK, I bought a Rottweiler puppy and called him Otto. As an adult dog he was 65 kg (143lbs). He made it to 9 years before dying of an enlarged heart. Loved training him. Very powerful. Very intense dog. Would let people pet him on the street, but the minute he was in his castle at our house he was a soldier on duty. An amazing dog. But now I'm 53 and living in Scandinavia I wouldn't own a guard dog of that power again.

    1. Stafordshire Bull Terrier
    2. Airdale Terrier
    3. Beauceron (For working dog + Family). This dog would be number 1 but if they dont work, they will find a way to keep you busy. They are unwavering when it comes to loyalty to the extreme. When watching my children playing in the yard for example, my Beauceron always keeps a close eye on them. Its like I assigned him to babysitting duty truly astonishing.

Grateful: I had a rescued pup, a skinny scrawny half-starved little thing who was probably a mix of GS, Rottie and Dobie. He grew to 105 pounds. My favorite dog ever, and certainly the smartest dog I've ever had. I've had lots of big dogs, including St Bernard's, and currently an Anatolian mix who is a true gentle giant, but that Shepherd mix occupies a special place in my heart.

Best dog of my life was a German Rott named Max. Incredible dog. Smarter than most people. #2 Life dog was Dozer, a bull mastiff, a gentle giant. I have never seen another dog that was so conscious of its size, whether gentle around kids and the elderly or using his size to intimidate. My wife's dog, I had to get his approval to date her. #3 was a tall long black German Shepherd, Kato. Played tackle football with our son and his friends, kept me company while under my cars, and patrolled our acre yard. Fine with horses and geese.

Great list! I have so many dog breeds that I love. It’s very hard to pick a top three. I’m saying:
1-Anatolian Shepherd (that’s the American name)
2-Colorado Mountain Dog (rare breed 1/2 Anatolian Shepherd 1/2 Great Pyrenees)
    3-Irish Wolfhound.
The first two I currently have and the last is just a breed I’ve loved from afar.

Actually kangal and anatolian shepherds are different breeds.Kangal are more athlethic than anatolian shepherds

    • @deannak8877
      @deannak8877 6 років тому

First, I only specified the recognized American breed name and nothing more. I never used the Turkish name/classification for my dogs, even though I do know them and they are both classified different in Turkey.
Second, in America as it is now the Turkish breeds are unfortunately lumped together for the average person. In Turkey Kangal dogs and others are of a specific coloring and come from specific regions . In America generally you will find all the colorings being lumped into the Anatolian Shepherd group along with all the other Turkish dogs.
Third- I think it’s pointless to make such a blanket statement about one being more of something that another. I have personally witnessed that athleticism or any other treat varies too much from dog to dog to make such statements.

Kermit 95 they are all Coban Kopegi (Anatolian Shepherd) what makes Kangal is being from Sivas region and larger and specific color. The white Anatolian Shepherd called Akbash (Akbas); bridle color called Capar (Chapar-Çapar) or Kars Kangal (google it). Boz is most mastiff look heavier ones.... most athletic ones are the less heavier ones... in USA all of them called Anatolian Shepherd (most common found is the traditional coban Anatolian Shepherd) thanks

Kermit 95 they are not different breed; same breed from different regions.

I live in Colorado and have seen quite a lot of Great Pyrenees crosses! GP with B. Mountain, Anatolian, Akbash, Newfoundland, Saint Bernard, etc. I am on my 4th Irish Wolfhound. Two were mixed (one that was half Newfoundland and the other has 1/4 to 1/8 Great Dane). I almost got an Anatolian/GP mix before getting my latest IW!
