Mikey February Becomes the First Black Surfer from South Africa on the World Tour - The Inertia
Вставка
- Опубліковано 19 лип 2018
- Mikey February qualifying for the World Tour is about a country gradually becoming what Nelson Mandela envisioned so many years prior. Mikey’s qualification isn’t just about a black person making it to the greatest show in surf. It’s about a country that’s healing. It’s about Nelson Mandela’s vision of achieving equal opportunity for all coming to fruition. It’s a triumph over circumstances. It’s starting your own ad agency when the rule of law stands against you. It’s believing in a dream and following it with reckless abandon. Mikey February is a testament to that.

if all black surfers have his style, we need WAY MORE. the steeez is real
This makes me feel better about surfing, I think people in Florida look at me as if I’m some mystical creature
You are living your truth and that is probably uncommon for them. Keep doing your thing man!!
@@fauxdauteur love this comment🤘🏽
Where in Florida do you surf?

HEY I FROM RIVERIA BEACH ON OF THE MOST DANGEROUES BLACK CITIES IN FLORIDA N I GO UP THE BEACH N SURF.
PS SURFERS ARRE MYSTICAL CREATURES!
Im a African american bodyboarder and I fealt out of place in the surfing world a lot of people thought I couldn't surf or people gave me looks so I just kept it going and do what I do best.
Whats uo bro. much respect, I kiteboard also and trust me I only met one other dude out there. thats ok though we ride for us.
"Im ready for the African storm", awesome quote, love it!
Thanks for the great video. It's refreshingly forward about race and prejudice in surf culture and leaves me wanting to see more of February's surfing. He's such a stylish surfer and I hope he stays on tour. I think the competitive surf world could benefit from some more high-lines and emphasizing the aesthetics of a well connected wave. I'd love to see Machado and February team up for the grooviest edit ever.
As an African American who has been surfing in Southern California since the mid '80s I always just wanted to be recognized as a surfer not as a black guy who surfs. I grew up in Orange County and of course almost all my surf buddies were white so I just wanted to be one of the boys. I can't tell you how many racists remarks I've received but also have seen how my presence has changed a lot of people's perception. Anyway, I was super stoked to see Mikey make it on tour. I think he needs a bit more girth to add to that flow, then he's gonna be a serious force to reckon with.
I watched some black kids paddle out one morning.
thought to myself,
“shit, imagine a generation of black surfers dominating surf competitions.”
Um. Can we talk about how handsome he is as well as talented? Just a beautiful person.
One great surfer...
This made me so emotional, absolute legend. Mikey, you are the best. Thank you
Mikey February our local hero in the South... congrats dude, check you out in the kom soon... #itsallstillhere
We love you on the Texas Gulf Coast.
Woody Ousley 🤘
He’s the best surfer ever! Such a sick style he’s doesn’t look like a robot like everyone else on tour
One of the most stylish surfers ever.
So nice to see local south Africans make the tour gives me hope for my surf journey
Cyril did alot for SA surfing. Michael too. Another SA surfing family. Surfing breaks all cultural boundaries and we are all equal in the water. Praises to the Ocean.
So proud of this guy
Waterman by David Davis. Duke kahanamoko the father of surfing when he traveled to United States for olympics. He was seen as a Blackman. I was surfing yesterday at HB pier and the life guard asked me , do you speak English. Somethings never change.
While Aborigional Native Americans of the Islands were prominent pearl divers (1500) and the Africans who designed their first surf boards made out of wood! Amazing to watch and also having a fierce impact it is making on these African youngsters, learning how to swim is very important so surfing lessons are ultimately and literally saving lives!
You're amazing Mikey! I curiuos and sooo impressed by your performance on the BBC documentary about the Zambesi...hence I'm here. Well done young mam👏👏👏
True what Trevor Noah said & I paraphrase, you are born & called mixed race until one day you make it big, and that’s when they start calling you black.
Would love to see more black surfers in the line up
The South African MR love his style. Woof
Great to see him and other young African people enjoy themselves and be active.
Dope..thought I was the only one. lol
What a chilled cat, go Mikey!!!!!!
this is awesome to see!!!! we need to see more of you dude !!!
There are many great surfers in 🇬🇭 Ghana, they have a history of over 400 year at it.....
👍🌊....big time . get the vibe floating.
I love seeing this. GRRRRREAT ! Kool 🌟🌟🌟
I'm a Haitian female surfer in Oregon.
Super Inspiring!!! Thanks for the upload❤️❤️
Love this guys style. Almost like Rob Machado.
Love from India you're amazing dude
Jojó de Olivença and Tinguinha Lima, both from Brazil, made the then WCT Top 44 way before Mickey February. In any case, Mickey's entrance is definitely emblematic due to his South African background and all the racial issues concerning the country's history.
Too bad he didn’t last on tour. With the new ct format I think he will have a better chance staying on top 22. I hope he has good run on the qs in 2019
The real question is if he’s born in February
This is awesome
He got steez 🤙
Lot of bad shit in ZA. This is great though. Lekker! From a Kiwi
...wanna see him in a heat with Ricardo!
Wat bad shit. Sa the best country in the world and we smash u at rugby as well

Good surfer.
Pepsi surfers on UA-cam Loved it.
12 mile Nick Gabaldon on UA-cam. Downey California
Look up Jordy Smith! Not the first surfer of color from South Africa!
IMAGINE THE ZULUS SURFIN THE POINT WITH THE ANIMAL SKIN CLOTHING....
Welcome to surfing. Bobby Martinez had issues and that’s California. Nick Gabaldon 1930 black surfer California. Hawaii taught us just have fun. Downey California
You have absolutely no idea what you are talking about. You bring a bad (worse) name to Hawaii by feeling the need to bring your superior knowledge to the table. I don't know how to tell you this nicely but you look like you need a surf and a RUN! Clearly weren't with much of that intelligence stuff either.
With nothing going for you in this life it's clear why you should have such a severely disabled view on anything more complex than wiping your arse.
Ah sincerest apologies Frank - I didn't see your disclaimer. It's okay to be a downey.
Nathan Harrison Surfing is for everyone ,do you know Duke kahanamoko when he traveled to main land United States he was seen as a black man. He was trying to share the Hawaiian spirit which you are the one who knows more than me. Waterman by David Davis book, Downey California
@@Californiansurfer I understand, I just did not take kindly to underestimation of the struggles of black South Africans. I am white and the fact that mikey is so highly regarded is still incredible for my mostly previously backwards country. Cheers downey!
Nathan Harrison I have been surfing sine twelve years old everyone thought I was Hawaiian which I am Mexican American. It was funny how all the white kids at HB pier thought surfing was a white thing. It’s for everyone. P.s. watch the Pepsi surfers on UA-cam. Aloha. If your ever in Cali let me know. We have bob Hawaiians in Gardena, , San calemente surf museum in San Clemente. Downey California. P.s. I surfed new baffalo Michigan. That was crazy.
Ye he's made us south Africans proud but he ain't a black man.
KJVDW explain
He'd pass the police test here in Oakland so that is good enough for me
this is your Fukushima wake up call get the hell out of the water
mikey aint black guys, he is coloured as in mixed race, so a half black guy made the tour so sal can only cry a few tears. Dude can rip though
“Mikey ain’t black guys...he is COLOURED as in a MIXED race....so a HALF BLACK guy made the tour...”
Cocaine is a helluva drug.

@@phillybigbully And James Gordon knows how to use and abuse it 😂
not even good. milked for yet another diversity quota, this time, infiltrating surfing
