    Good confirmation of a bad pump... and the "smacking of the tank" (to wake-up the pump) was a nice touch to get on camera! =)

      Not sure if you're still responding to messages but I've got the same problem.... Poor readings from 02 sensors... Many I saw who thought it was a fuel pump ended up having the issue returned in a week or so..... When I couldn't get mine to stay running I pulled the 404 relay out and the vehicle ran perfectly the 35 minutes home at 60 mph... Not a single stutter.... Everything great.... Currently sitting until I figure it out...... Why would it run perfectly without the 404 if it was a bad fuel pump... I thought that relay controlled them.... What am I missing gentlemen?

    Great video guys. I had this same problem on a Porsche Cayenne which I believe has a lot in common with the V8 Toureg? On the Porsche, if you pull out the main fuel pump relay, the car has a redundancy strategy which makes the other pump run continuously. Useful for a testing aid and also might save your customer on a towing cost if they're smart enough to handle pulling the relay out. Keep up the good work guys, appreciate you taking the time to video these interesting jobs. Makes life easier for the rest of us and gives us confidence to go ahead and do some testing.

    • @PositiveLeadDiagnostics

      same strategy on a Porsche too, nice, pulling the relay would have been a good test, and that is a great tip to save on a tow bill, thanks for watching!

      Pulling this relay on my 04 v8 Touareg is what got me home the other day.... Was having the same issue, ran under a 1/4 tank just fine but if I parked on a hill it would stall after the transfer pump cut off and when I put just 10 bucks in it to get me home that took it slightly over 1/4 and I couldn't make it more than 2 minutes without stalling..... Tried to limp home for half hour and finally remembered reading about the relay the first time I experienced it...... Ran perfectly fine..... Been sitting for two days since I got home waiting for me to figure it out .......
      I was getting 02 sensor fault codes so I was leaning towards the upstream sensor or possibly the fuel sending unit...... Everyone I read or listened to who went with a fuel pump had the problem come back within a week, sometimes 2....... Don't want to waste the money..... Did the fuel pump solve your issue permanently?

    Great video guys I would have checked the current waveform for the transfer pump that will tell you a lot about the condition of it. I know that you recommend changing the transfer pump, but if the waveform looked like shit from missing bars, its a guarantee that the pump will fail soon and tell the customer that, but if the wave looked great really don't need waste 400. I know that there are other ways for a pumps to fail but 99% of the time its the motor that craps out.
    Again great video and love the foreign stuff!

    • @pskauto6798
      @pskauto6798 7 років тому +2

      JOHN HUFNAGEL we did see a healthy waveform from the secondary pump but the recommendation was mainly due to needing to unseat the transfer pump module to disconnect the fuel line from the secondary to the primary during replacement that makes you kind of want to kill 2 birds with one stone . However we did 100% confirm the failed component so we did make a recommendation ....but completely related to the customer when they decided to just do the primary pump lol . I smelled like fuel for 2 days ! Lol

    Awesome man! I believe scannerdanner has a vid on a Phaeton with the dual pumps and the strategy is to run off the transfer pump on start up. VW are real " geniuses " with the fuel pump prime when you open the driver's door and if the door luck switch is bad the car won't start. Jeez! You gotta give it to those engineers what they come up with after a bad sleep filled with nightmares... :)))

    Good diagnosis. Not sure I agree with replacing both pumps as the secondary one only runs for a few seconds so its life expectancy will be very different. The tank does not need to come out either..

    • @PositiveLeadDiagnostics
      @PositiveLeadDiagnostics  7 років тому +1

      the secondary pump runs for 30 seconds on initial start up, then only runs when needed (high load I assume), only reason I suggested both was because you have to pull both out when replacing, before I knew the prices too

    This is golden! Where are you guys located? I have the same vehicle with the same problem. But my transfer pump (driver side) appears to run constantly. I've unplugged the primary pump (passenger side) and the car continues to run. I've read that the transfer pump should only run for priming/starting and then switch over to primary. But with my primary not running, I'd like to know why the transfer pump continues to work.

    Hi there was the same situation in a video with a Audi Quattro the transfer pump cuts off after a pre determine time after the car stats I think that the main pump has a succion effect but I think that the transfer pump only runs to make sure the main pump doesn't start dry and looses suction Yvan at motoyam did a video on this it was very similar issues.

    Hey Tom and Mike..Nice to see you both branching out from the Danner tree of knowledge. Great work on the Diagnostics too. I'm just wondering tho, Looking at your current waveform on the transfer pump, Is the 11 amps to high in spec and that's the reason of recommending it to be replaced as well.? The wave form looked great otherwise.
    Keep up the great work and vid's too.

    Most likely not the fuel pump. On the primary /passenger side/ there is a screen on the bottom that gets clogged and can't maintain the pressure. I had the same issue. Really the screen needs to be cleaned and not replace the fuel pump.

    • @PositiveLeadDiagnostics
      @PositiveLeadDiagnostics  6 років тому

      This was 100% a faulty fuel pump. We had no amperage on the primary pump which means it was never on. And you could clearly see fuel psi dropping was directly correlated to the transfer pump shutting off when the primary should take over.

    Had this exact problem in my 2004 Touareg V8 and had the main pump (passenger side) replaced (10/2016). The transfer pump (driver side) was working fine at the time so I chose not to have it replaced because of the cost. Now, when my gas level gets to about 1/4 full I experience the same stalling/car shutting off problem. Doesn't happen until the fuel level drops to about that point. I assume the transfer pump is now bad. Of course, I want to confirm that before incurring another big repair bill. Nothing is cheap or easy on this vehicle but when it's running well it's a dream. Do you think I'm guessing right on this? Thanks for the video.

      Hello Bro, please did you finally get a solution for this?
      I'm experiencing the same problem and my mechanics keep telling me it's fuel pump issue.
      Secondly, is there any difference between a fuel pump for VW V8 Touareg and a V6?
      And can someone use a VW V6 fuel pump for a VW V8 Touareg?

  • @V10PDTDI
    @V10PDTDI 7 років тому

    Did you guy replace the fuel filter ? On some Volkswagen the fuel filter is in the cover that caps the hole in the fuel tank one of them comes to mind is a 2006 passat 2.0 l turbo engine

    • @PositiveLeadDiagnostics
      @PositiveLeadDiagnostics  7 років тому

      Mike replaced the primary fuel pump only, I don't remember but I think pro demand said it was a part of the pump? I could be wrong, on start up both pumps run, the transfer pump runs for 30 seconds, then the main pump takes over, and the transfer pump will only be activated when needed, probably under high load situations

  • @spdparts8924

    Hi Tom, awesome vids, since you work on vw a lot, I have a question for you, we have 01 eurovan in our shop, no crank, found out that no voltage coming from fusebox that feeds pnp relay, so relay can't pass current to starter solenoid wire. Also ecm not providing ground to fuel pump relay. Do you know if fuel pump should prime only when cranking or can be primed with ignition on? Thanks!

    • @PositiveLeadDiagnostics
      @PositiveLeadDiagnostics  7 років тому

      Thanks for supporting! I am not 100% sure but I want to say it should prime when the key is turned to on position. I could be wrong on that. I have not worked on a lot of those. No power coming from the fuse box and no ground control to the fuel pump relay? What style fuse box is in that? Is it similar to mk2 or mk3 fuseboxes?

    • @spdparts8924
      @spdparts8924 7 років тому

      I want to say that fuse box looks similar to MK2/3 (according to google) it's located under steering wheel. The way that's setup is that PNP relay should have constant power from fusebox. According to diagram it should have constant power from TV2 (terminal 30 b+, i assume just straight battery power) and it doesn't have anything at the relay, but i can't find this TV2 connection anywhere on the fusebox to backtrace. And besides that we found that ecm doesn't provide ground to fuel pump relay (checked at pcm connector)

    • @PositiveLeadDiagnostics
      @PositiveLeadDiagnostics  7 років тому +1

      Maybe the ecm not grounding the relay is an effect and not a cause. Try this link. Let me know if it helps www.a2resource.com/electrical/CE2.html

    • @spdparts8924

      SPD Parts · I had an 88 VW Golf GL 4 speed
      I remember when i used to stand still sitting idle for about 15, 20 minutes. I could hear a small whining noise coming from somewhere under the steering wheel dash. Later on i started looking for that noise.
      I found out it was the fuel pump relay. It would get considerably hot. I would check to see the if the fuel pump relay is getting enough voltage. Check the proper ground on the relay going to the ecm. Or maybe the fuel pump relay has to be checked and or changed completely.

      Other than a concern of the transfer pump over working itself because in the logic it stated it runs on start up and " as needed" . Though it was really needed when the primary died and did not contribute! lol .. the biggest reason to suggest killing 2 birds with one stone here is that you have to access the secondary pump on the Other side of the Tank to disconnect the transfer line so you are 80% into the secondary pump replacement . Of course the tank was 110% full too !
