- Betsy and Edward Cohen have had a 40+ year love affair with their Paul Rudolph home located in the picturesque Casey Key area of Florida. Renowned for his innovative designs that shaped mid-century modern architecture, Rudolph’s work on Casey Key exemplifies his mastery of form, space, and light. This iconic structure reflects his commitment to blending architecture with the natural landscape, creating a harmonious and timeless design that continues to inspire architects and admirers alike. As Betsy and Edward’s children grew and started families of their own, they came to the realization that their once-cozy home no longer accommodated the expanding needs of their family. That's when they decided to build the ultimate place for all their families to gather while enjoying the coastal weather that Florida has to offer.
In addition to Rudolph’s work, the Casey Key estate also features two remarkable houses designed by Toshiko Mori. Known for her contemporary approach and sensitivity to context, Mori's additions complement Rudolph’s original vision while bringing a fresh perspective to the architectural landscape. Together, these works highlight the evolution of modern architecture in Florida, bridging past and present through thoughtful design. The effort that Betsy and Edward have done to protect/preserve the Rudolph home while adjusting to fit their families needs says alot about the love affair that started for them when they purchased the home in 1981.

A reminder that great architecture requires great clients.
great architecture requires money
How wonderful to have the owner (guardian) of an architectural significant home who appreciates the creator's original concept.
💯💯💯
love how throughout the video, the day passes as well from morning to night.
Beautiful home and wonderful backstory. Betsy was a pleasure to listen to. One of my favorite owners from this series. Seeing all the light flowing throughout made me happy - it imbued the space with positive energy/vibe.
I loved the way tree branches travels around the house, peaceful, great work
Wow such a beautiful home.. I wont be able to get one like this in my lifetime but maybe another lifetime.. This open plan and the way light enters is so nice
I love Casey Key! Such a quaint area.
I could listen to her all day. What a beautiful story.
2 episodes in a row of Paul Rudolph content! Delightful!!! 🤓
The additions are spectacular. Amazing compound.
A couple of years ago, I had the privilege of photographing the only Rudolph house in RI, built in 1975. It's a pretty radical, wedgy design that is absolutely stunning.
Casey Key is like they dropped the Caribbean right off the Gulf coast, it’s amazing
Casey Key is a beautiful area. Love the trees on this property
That last sentence... I hope you will know as you look down upon them smiling.
That being said, another amazing video and soundtrack to accompany it. This compound is simply breathtaking and I hope each time your children visit that they never lose the appreciation of being able to exist in such a space. Hat's off to Toshiko Mori who understood the assignment.
Just gorgeous. All 3 houses are superb, Thank you for this. 🙂🙂🙂🙂
SO great to see the Sarasota School Architects are getting their proper due. This home and the 'Umbrella house are my favorite residential projectsRudolph did..My father ran Rudolph's office in Sarasota the late 50s and early 60s, managing all the projects when Rudolph took the position to head the Yale School of Architecture, (my father eventually joined him teaching at Yale)... Rudolph, Twitchell, Abbott, Hampton, Lundy, Leedy and my Dad Bert Brosmith are all gone now, but the buildings thankfully remain.
Awesome. Awesome. Awesome. What a house. What a story. I can feel the breeze flowing thru, just watching this video. The additions, perfect. Thank you.🙌🏽✌🏽
Gorgeous Episode! Amazing work as always Open Space Guys!
That garden is a magical spot during sunset
I know exactly where that house is from having taken many drives up and down Casey Key. Lovely. LOVELY!
Did it survive the hurricane? So sad to think of the damage to the property, potentially!
Just rode down there today. Shocking how little beach is left, none at all along much of the road. It all felt very fragile, like the sea could take it as any moment.
What a masterpiece! The entire property, old and new compliment each other perfectly. Thank you for showing it to us 🙏🏻
addcited to your videos! simply amazing!
Thank you . Beautiful diction . So nice to hear someone speak so well . From Australia
So glad this home was found by these owners. The previous owners sound like philistines. They didn’t deserve this architectural gem.
Another stunning video work by you all.
For me, it's simply breath taking...!!! ♥
unbelievable home, thank you for sharing! i love the design of the home and the property its on
Those houses are amazing. Also the trees look incredible
I watched this a few weeks ago and just heard about the florida hurricane (im from the other side of the world)... I hope this masterpiece is okay.
I'm so glad you've been touring the area, so many great designs to tell the world so that we might get lucky and see them adopted elsewhere1
One of The most beautiful house !
Beautiful
To me, a perfect home. You are blessed to have 40 years to perfect it.
I love to stay their if they want it to be booked ...thank u for showing this place ✨🙌💐
Its a lovely house to live in 😊😊😊
amazing how space and choices and minimalism affect mood and spirit
Imagine a world full of people who took care like this!
I don't envy a lot of people but these houses and location are pretty envious making.
The house welcomes the guests that are invited. Definitely monumental and you have at least 10% of the frontage I suppose there is a lane through the other residents of the compound. But two times the coastlines. How much $$$. The deep and expansive love the guardian has of this home is profound. To her, rest assured there will always be a steward that connects with the place as you do. How can one not.🔵
This is art.
Beautiful!
Absolutely beautiful ❤
Stunning
This house was commissioned by the Burkhardt family, who were the original owners. The Cohens added a beautiful addition and are wonderful stewards of the property.
What a piece of art, im talking about the house
Asupreme intellectual and artistic achievement!!!
I always love how much older couples who own these architectural monuments are always so content with death
Beautiful Home
Classic Rudolph architecture. How did it fare in hurricane Helene? Please give us an update about condition and restoration plans when you hear about them.
the best house so far in open space
Beautiful, expensive to maintain, hard to insure, hard to heat or cool but somehow it's all worth it when you walk inside and feel at peace. I hope the family remains good stewards of that place because you can't build like that anymore at any price. Growing up on Siesta Key back in the 60's there were a lot of houses that perhaps weren't as significant as this one, but had the same feel.
Heating isn't hard when Sarasota almost never sees below 40
@@victorkreig6089 It ain't the heat, it's the humanity!
The Cohen's were visionary in building two recent dwellings of 12 ft living elevation. Clever. Hurricane flooding has or will likely impact their Rudolph house precarious today at sea level. It may have borne the brunt of Milton or Helene already. And forecast? If they loose it eventually they'll hopefully have the two Mori's.
❤❤❤❤
I am abroad but watched this episode about this beautiful home and have been wondering how it fared during Helene? I imagine the elevated structures have survived but I fear for the original home!
Casey Key was severely damaged by Hurricanes Helene and Milton. I sure hope these two houses, especially the Rudolph house, were not too impacted.
There are literally hundreds of these homes here in Florida just waiting to be restored. Most are pretty cheap to.
until the hurricanes hit us lollll
I hope this beautiful house survived the hurricane? 🙏🏼💚
Sarasota used to be affordable for middle class families in the early 2000’s. Now it is only for millionaires.
Beautiful home but hurricanes would scare the hell out of me
It's spectacular!
I really wonder how they deal with hurricanes
Florida tends to have swampy weather all year long. How is the Central AC? Open windows are nice, but in order to sleep and be comfy - U need AC. This is my No. 1 beef with FLW Homes and with a lot of MCM homes.
A home this size you need central a/c. You keep the windows open in cooler months. In FL you can’t survive with open windows throughout the year. lol
❤🙏
As a millennial born in the wrong timeline, I’m happy to know this exists
I personally don’t think listening to an owner of a mansion that didn’t build or design the house feels hollow and uninteresting
I wonder how this house withstand with the hurricanes in Florida
I hope its still there (written 11.10. 24 )
How does it look after the hurricane
Mostly Mc Mansions there now
I hope this house made it through milton and helene okay 🤞🤞
Where is the kitchen?
Hope these folks are okay and the house intact after Hurricane Helene.
The original structure that is on grade surely had to have been compromised by surge. Luckily these owners should be financially able to restore.
Not a great job showing the flow of the homes. Whats the floorplan? How do the rooms flow into each other? I don't think I saw the kitchen.
fab ... but two many chairs
I always thought wealthy people lacked good taste. I stand corrected.
Bet this home got 4 feet of water inside it during Hurricane Helene
To je život!
Me tady policajti plivou na hlavu a bouraji do aut 😂😅
This house. That house. The mother in law house. How much $$$ do these people have?
Most homes today should be designed along modernist principles, but no. People still want to live in the 1700's.
I'm sorry but this house reminds me of the DMV. Cold and uncomfortable
Unwelcoming and totally devoid of any warmth inside, like it's dead.
