3:44 "The best Kangaroo jumps can take them 2 metres forward" This is at a stroll.
The comfortable hopping speed for a kangaroo is about 21-26 km/h (13-16 mph), but speeds of up to 71 km/h (44 mph) can be attained over short distances, while it can sustain a speed of 40 km/h (25 mph) for nearly 2 km (1.2 mi). The faster a kangaroo hops, the less energy it consumes (up to its cruising speed). In a single jump a fleeing Kangaroo is able to cover a distance of 9 meters (almost 30 feet).

Did you know that kangaroos originally evolved in areas of cold? They used their long hind legs for skiing on snow. Thanks to plate tectonics, Australia moved further north so now there is very little snow. Thus kangaroos adapted to use those long hind legs for hopping.

    • @Dave_Sisson

There are a LOT of areas in Australia that get deep snow and kangaroos do not manage it well. However other common animals like wombats thrive in it.

Hi, my ASD/Aspie teen son wanted to comment [please don't get upset, he is also an air sign and feels compelled to correct sometimes]: >>Aah! Macropods are an order not a family. And there're thirteen, not ten! There's kangaroos, wallabies, wallaroos, pademelons, tree-kangaroos, dingisos, tenkiles, dorcopsis, monjons, nabarleks, potoroos, bettongs, and quokkas.

Just FYI, I've done it in the past too, but talking about european conquerors as "human settlement" is completely tone deaf. There have been people farming this land for thousands upon thousands of years, and most kangaroo species are half domesticated. Sovereignty was never ceded by the first nations, and they are still here despite enduring unimaginable much suffering.
