    I love listening to you. This has been a weird month, I was taking care of a friend for a while, now I'm home but she's still sick, and that makes it hard for me to relax. Your videos always calm me down. They're like a gift. Thank you!!!

    I recently was introduced to Folk Art and enjoyed it, but I find myself using it more as a thing to do when my mind goes blank. It’s f\un and works better with my gouache w/c paints-the colors are so pure and strong-but I keep going back to my regular w/c’s because I love the way they mix and layer, and still the paper glows though them.
    Thanks for a great and fun lesson! My first Folk Art involved stylized hearts and flowers. Now I get to try Landscapes!!

      Thanks Anna! I think I'm going to use them to see how colors work together in limited palettes. I should've specified that this was landscape folk art. I realized that after I made the video. There are many other forms. I hope you enjoy creating one. 🙂

    Folk art most certainly has its place in the art world. A lot of it however makes me think of the paintings that my 10-year-old grandson does when I let him play with my watercolor.

      Yes, it can be that simplistic. I agree. Kind of adds a little innocent charm to art.

    If you stick the tape to your clothes a few times before taping your paper it will release easier when you want to remove it. I have the Bee watercolor sketchbook in both the 5x8 & 8x11 sizes. I really like the smaller one as it is easier to handle. I like the larger one for doing bigger pieces, but it is harder to handle.

    i have a hard time classifying my art, so i don't. LOL it's just mine and i enjoy it. i think it's cool you respond every time. i know alot of the mega toubers don't so i often just don't comment, they don't have time for my silly comments after all. i found out something i never knew before; Golden (who makes pretty good acrylics) is who owns QOR. not sure why but this little nugget just made me really happy.

    • @IllustrationsByPete
      @IllustrationsByPete  4 місяці тому +1

      First, I'm glad you feel heard here. I respond because although I'm the one with the video camera, I'm certainly not the only one with something worth saying and I want the people in this community to feel like I appreciate them and they can share what's important to them, even if it's also silly. Second, you don't have to classify your art. Classification only helps people understand where you are coming from but most classifications are so broad that art can carry many different classifications and people understand that. Third, yes! When I first started looking into QoR and realized that Golden was the baby daddy, I was excited because of their reputation for quality. 👍🏻

    Thank you for your answer. My name is all numbers because Google didn't allow the name I wanted and suggested some stupid version with numbers. That made me a bit angry and I decided on using only numbers - my wanted name "coded" 🙂 (That reminds me of another "AI check": I once wanted to rate a vendor on ebay by writing, "Good stamp album, delivered quickly. Thanks." but I couldn't send it and got the message, "We do not allow obscene language on eBay. Please edit your comment." 🤣)
    I like your example of folk art, especially your "neurographic art" take on it; thank you for showing that version. 🥰

    My suggestion to anyone who doesn't like their water brush or that find it scratchy is to try a different brand. I have tried quite a few and they are not all the same and some are just horrible. The better the quality the better the outcome.

    • @IllustrationsByPete
      @IllustrationsByPete  4 місяці тому

      Good advice. I'm not sure of the quality but the Pentel water brushes are the only ones where I've been able to control the water flow. Many others I've felt frustrated with but I haven't tried them all.

      After I wrote my comment I realized there are probably some very expensive water brushes and I definitely didn't mean those. I would say Pentel and Kuretake are great. (Now I want to go look for those very pricey brushes. 😂)

    A lot of fun, as always. When you started painting, I thought it was going to be a complete disaster but it really came together and it’s so colorful. I guess I’d call that style Naive. As in Grandma Moses. Or Outsider art. There’s a huge show of Outsider Art every year in NYC.
    Another question: are you actually talking while you’re painting?

    • @IllustrationsByPete
      @IllustrationsByPete  4 місяці тому +2

      It's a fun style. You can get very creative and add a lot of patterns if you want also. No, I am not talking while I paint. I pre-recorded the painting and added the voiceover later.

      As always Pete, I love to watch you paint and hear you talk about “things”. I’ve never been a huge fan of Folk Art, however I do see the beauty in it.
      Re: water brushes, none of my water brushes are “scratchy” and honestly use them as much as I use my “real” brushes. Mine are very inexpensive so 🤷‍♀️ who knows!! Enjoy all of your videos so much, thank you for taking your time to put them out there…WE love them.

    • @IllustrationsByPete
      @IllustrationsByPete  4 місяці тому

      Thank you Denise! I always appreciate you. I don't have any trouble with the Pentel water brushes I use but I've had trouble controlling the water flow with some other brands. I still haven't noticed any scratching on any of them though.

    • @ImeldaFagin
      @ImeldaFagin 4 місяці тому

      @@IllustrationsByPete what I meant by “scratchy” is that I probably try to use them a bit dry in order to control the water coming out. Ok! Everybody loves them. I’m going to try to be more tolerant of them. I’m going to the USA next month and I’m taking three of them. If I want other brushes I’ll borrow them from my siblings.,

    Have you tried any of the smaller plastic palettes for travel? there's this one silver one with a bright green clasp that has like 16 wells and I use that one for travel a lot and it's great because it holds 4 more than your average metal tin and it has huge mixing space too.
    I did not realize this is what folk art is and I absolutely adore this style. It's now inspiring me to try with my watercolor and maybe my gouache even (it probably would work better, honestly)

    • @IllustrationsByPete
      @IllustrationsByPete  4 місяці тому

      You've asked another question, you've made it into the next one too. 😂
      I think I know which one you are talking about, mine has 18 wells. I have 2 of them, one for WC and one for gouache. I do enjoy them but I also like to swap out colors on my palette often so the metal ones are my go to. Once I settle on a color palette then I do prefer those since they have a ton more mixing space.
      Yes, gouache would work great for this style of painting. I have not tried it yet but I will soon. 👍🏻

    Considering trying this paper out. How do you like it? It is listed as 100% cotton cold press.

    • @IllustrationsByPete
      @IllustrationsByPete  4 місяці тому +1

      It isn't as rough as some cold press paper but it is rough enough. It handles layers well. Sometimes it can seem very thirsty. Nothing really sticks out other than it being good paper. I didn't even notice that I liked it until I finished my last one and didn't replace it. Then I kept looking to reach for it. Liking it, kind of snuck up on me. 😂 Now I always want to have one handy.
