John Mayer: ‘Sob Rock’ and Implanting False Memories | Apple Music

- Опубліковано 15 тра 2024
- John Mayer sits down with Zane Lowe to talk about ‘Sob Rock’, his sole source of joy during the pandemic. He approached it like writing a script. Tracks like “Shouldn’t Matter But It Does” and “Why You No Love Me” went through multiple versions while he sought to make each track sweet but never sappy. His goal for the ‘Sob Rock’ was to make music that transports listeners, triggering memories in listeners that may or may not exist. Listen to John Mayer on Apple Music: apple.co/_JohnMayer

John: “So you have chosen death...”

When John speaks about "Why You No Love Me" with such confidence and self-assurance, you see someone who just loves language and communication, and that is something that can be lost in this modern age.
And yet he's so bad at communicating with spoken words! He's got the ideas, the metaphors, the motormouth, but little clarity. It's entertaining to listen to JM talk if you're not trying to really understand what he's getting at, but it's so much better when he's fitting words to a song.
@@skierpage I think he's a pretty good speaker, actually. It's one of his talents.
I heard that differently.
He is telling the world that he never felt loved as a child...and so til this day, he STILL uses that unloved child to ask his adult relationships, "Why you no love me?"
He never felt loved as a child...THAT is why he is a narcissist today.
@@le_th_ not an excuse
More of a reason than an excuse.

Haha
(or is it?)
this joke was delicious
JM's metaphors are something out of this world. He just sees life in such a colourful way, every time I watch him speak I have almost the same amusement as when I watch him play. So good.
His brain is on another level from the average human. Listening to the way he speaks I’m reminded of some of the great philosophers. I wouldn’t be surprised to find that JM has an extremely high IQ. He truly is a creative genius. I was blown away by his explanation for Why You No Love Me
John has a very beautiful mind. Nuff said lol it's like a breath of fresh air hearing his metaphorical narrative towards life.
either you guys are 10 yo, dumb or have really low self-steem
@@Nick-kb2jc hello, john
What in the actual ef lol???
"It's not English as a second language, it's 'language' as a second language". Genius.
that statement reminded me of the movie 'arrival'.
Can you explain?
@@JonasEhmannMusic I’ll do my best.
“Why you no love me” is the way his “inner-child” (to put it in jungian terms) expressed the pain of not feeling loved early on when he began dating (and “for a long time”, as he says). Conveying that sentence the way a child would express it he’s alluding to the purest manifestation of dispair: the raw, primal expression of a child feeling left alone and asking for love, as that was the way he felt at that time. As an adult he’s trying to articulate, in the language of that child, that very exact feeling, hence the “language as a second language” he’s referring to.
I’m not completely sure I didn’t misread him, though, as it’s hard to “prove” that you inferred a clear explanation from the literality of a beautiful and highly evocative metaphor. But I think he meant something along those lines.
Cheers.
@ Thanks a lot :)
Ya… I think he was trying to say that language is the only means for us to sort of convey our thoughts/feelings. I mean… until Neuralink comes out! 😂
Theres a thin line between being genius and being batshit crazy and everytime I hear John talk, I just think he's playing jump rope with that line
That is so true
@@colby7325 he's self-obsessed and full of half-baked ideas, but no real clarity unless in a song.

@@skierpage That’s why he’s a musician and not a public speaker
I love John Mayer…I just wish he would be interviewed by someone who wasn’t more concerned with appearing to “get him” than actually understanding his music and thought process. The eagerness to connect with JM left this interview feeling topical and one sided.
Could not agree more with this analysis. Every time John says something so deeply poignant, Zane either tries to one-up him with a projected assumption of him…or realizes he simply cannot hang and completely sharp turns the topic at hand with a prefabbed, pre-practiced derailment.
Made it frustrating to watch.
Yep!
@@jontzou yeah man. I much more preferred those interviews with Rick Rubin. It seemed like he and Kendrick both had a mutual respect for each other and Rick cared about him, but not to further his own image
I agree. Unbearable interviewer
Yes to this. The unfortunate thing is Zane does seem light on his feet, he just can't get out of his own way.
"If I write a song about something the size of a glass of water and I do it right, I notice a week later its got the universe in it"- JM.
"When the reader doesn't love the writer" punched me in the mouth.
Yeah that hurts.. but he put it in perfect words, that I could never even understand to explain--to where even that could have been understood by others, without making it so complicated. If that made any sense 😅😫

Hello, fellow members of r/JohnMayer. Good to see you here.
My dude
John's reference about "I'm sorry " vs. "I'd never to do that you" is so true. Emotional intelligence is so key in making any kind of relationship work. Find someone who loves you the way that you love yourself. Family are the people your'e born with. Friends are the family you choose.
can you elaborate on the VS part? i don't quite undertand it. thank you
@@thebatspy1140 Someone saying “I'm sorry” would take place after a hurtful or unthoughtful action. Whereas “I'd never do that to you” shows the person you’re communicating with understands and has consideration for the impact of said action. He’s saying when you’re young, someone messing up, causing you pain, then apologising seems fulfilling. However, as you get older you realise someone never having taken the action or caused the pain in the first place is far more preferable and attractive.
@@AG-mj6wv thank you for saying this. English is not my native language and I thought I had misunderstood this part. But it's really that. Bonding with scar tissue is definitely not as attractive as bonding with a willingness to not hurting others.
Only thing I disagree with what he said was it’s not a 20’s vs 40’s thing, it’s a immaturity/maturity thing. Mature people know this. I’m glad he’s learned this ♥️
@@heather23renae you're right. But I also think that not even maturity is going to keep you from hurting others forever, despite your disposition. But this kind of consideration is far better than always counting on people's forgiveness.

The first song of his that put a memory in my brain that didn’t exist yet was St. Patrick’s day. I always had pictures in my head of the holidays, with a person I haven’t met yet.
That’s exactly how I felt about the song when I first heard it! Such a beautifully nostalgic tune.
Thissss. And it’s so underrated.
bless
Yessss
No Such Thing, Stop This Train and Not Myself have given me non-existential memories and boy when I listen to those three specific songs, does it hit like a bullet train of reminiscence. But St. Patrick's Day also gives me a photo album type of scrapbook feel too, a person I've never met---it doesn't help when you're someone who has synesthesia.
John gets better as the years go on. Hope we get new albums for a long time.
Yessss! Please, John. 🥺
👍
This is one of the strangest interviews I've ever seen. I just can't get over how this is real
This conversation is so pretentious in the most beautiful way possible.
It's his hair.... Just perfect, whether it's long or short... John has the best hair
It's all of him, he's just got it all - his gorgeous fingers drive me nuts. John is an almost perfect man!!
John Mayer is the prime example of its not what you say it is how you say it. I have no idea what he is talking about sometimes and yet I'm intrigued
Sometimes I don’t even think HE has any idea what he’s talking about
Haha thought I was the only one
Saw this comment here but think it applies. "There's a fine line between genius and bat crazy, I feel like JM is playing jump rope with that line" 😂
John Mayer for me, is just on another fan level. I LOVE listening to him. It’s insane how deep he actually is.
Whether it’s playing the guitar or talking, it’s always inspiring. It’s quite hard to describe but I feel I know him and he can paint pictures of almost every situation or process that you can understand and translate it yourself into other things to help you in your life.

Very well said 👏🏼 👏🏼👏🏼
Totally agree on this one.
Hyper articulate.
Same!
Any one noticed the pain and the quiver in his voice when he says "How is it possible that you couldn't love me?". And it fascinating how he quickly pulls himself back up in the next sentence. I keep coming back to watch this interview over and over again.

John should do podcasts, PERIOD.
what i love about john is that everytime i hear him playing guitar, he has a tone that is always different, something unique. it's just incredible!
But he also still retains the classic Mayer sound and style so you always know it’s him! Total genius.
He has enough pedals to do it lol.
Another good thing is that you never hear the same performance twice 😊
And through all the little nuances you still know it’s him. He’s just on another level.
As a fellow guitarist I can tell you, Johnny is an absolute shredder, plus he has soul. You can tell he’s been influenced by so many legends like SRV, Jeff Beck etc. He’s definitely the real deal…
It’s odd to me that John seems to somewhat look down on The Search for Everything (saying it “suffered” for not having all the songs locked in from the beginning), because I actually consider it to be one of his top two records, as a whole. It’s a sad and beautiful concept record detailing the post-breakup mindset in such brutal detail. Every song works well on its own, but they all come together to form an even greater whole.
Moving on and getting over is one of my favorite songs.
Same... Im shocked to hear he thinks that
It's a brilliant record. I would like to hear some of the other songs he had teed up on it tgat never made the cut. "In the blood" is one of my favorite acoustic songs ever
I think there's a natural deference to your last group of songs, whatever happens. It's kinda how you get pumped up for the next, by saying the last was missing something :)
It's not a Continuum, but it's up there with the rest. One of my favs.
“You sing them in a way that is like your in awe of the song.” What a way to describe the way Mayer feels on his records. Every time he sings you can feel he’s completely in love with the song. Beautifully put by Zane.
Tom Petty said how he evaluates a singer is, "Do I believe them?"
This is what makes John a great singer.
@@foehrlyodd He's a good singer and that's it. He's not a great singer....... Stop it.
@@romeod7549 a great person to be singing the song? A great singer-songwriter?
I think Mayer puts up a good front during interviews like these… he uses metaphors as a shield, but his body language tells different. I just want to give him a hug and tell him he’s done well.
Whether you care for his music or not, there is no denying the guy is a genius.
John has a laugh like Joaquin’s joker 😂
haha true! 😁
I thought the same thing.
Or Mozart from the movie Amadeus which I think is very fitting as he is a modern day genius.
He’s got that rich guy laugh 😂
I love every word of their conversation. John is a genius in basically every way
🙄
gay-uha
And he’ll let you know that every other sentence.
He absolutely is.
It is awesome to be a fan of someone, but I think putting people up on a pedastal is not really the best thing to do. John is a person, who is maybe a genius at some things. Although even John would probably disagree with that.
Great interview with lots of interesting questions regarding the creative process. Excited to hear the album! 🎶
The words “creative genius” get thrown around a lot. But what we are looking at right now in John Mayer, is an actual creative genius. When he explained Why You No Love Me, my jaw was on the floor because I understood it.
Definitely seems to be a much deeper undercurrent of sadness to this album than I expected
I mean he wrote and recorded it during a period of lockdowns, isolation, and loss. Seems only natural
@@kevinborchers3522 what loss ?
@@kevinborchers3522 Not necessarily. A lot of popular artists decided to write more uplifting and positive music as a sort of counter to the general sentiment of last year, and that initially seemed like the direction John was taking too based on aesthetics and the first new single (Last Train Home).
I’ve been going through the toughest heart break ever for myself the last three months. I numbed a lot of the pain at first, but have really been feeling the brokenness lately. I have a strong feeling this album will crush me and help me move forward with my life. It’s going to be difficult but I’m ready to let go.
I've had the toughest one this year. 5 months on and I still feel the same. I honestly feel like its easier to want to find love than love finding you, giving you the best summer you ever had and get to a point where you really think they're the one and then out of no where, they start losing their feelings and stop talking to you, leaving you with the feeling of wanting to be someone else. I think I'm better these days but I cant be sure if its just other things stealing the spotlight or not.
@@isaacandrews5330 Things have to get better for us, it just will take some time. I’ve been in a few long term relationships so this is my first time ever being alone as an adult in my late 20’s. My heart is made to share love with someone and transitioning into loving myself independently has been so so hard. For the first time in my life my heart is so damaged that the idea of being with someone else is unappealing. The disconnect and indifference I feel on a daily basis is exhausting. It’ll get better.

“will crush me and help me move forward” you put it that word beautifully. We know its gonna be a hard week or even a month when this album came out. All we need to do just keep hanging and let it feel that way.
Ok, the kitchen/pasta metaphor was just a little much 🤣
Yeah, he really jumped the shark with that one. Haha. It was like he was saying "Should we go off the rails? No? Yeah, let's do it."
Ikr! So extra. Lol but we have to admire his effort
His comments on Why You No Love Me remind me of the quote “life is a comedy to those who think...and a tragedy to those who feel”
why u no love me will crush my soul into a million pieces and I'm so ready for it
All JM interviews should start with: hey John what’s on your wrist?
(If you know you know)
He’s talking about watches everyone.
Looks like his patek world time Tiffany dial.
Patek Aquanaut, black dial, black rubber strap.
Don't know how often I manifested and thought about going out to dinner with John once to discuss everything on his and my mind around music, life, love, relationships, money, success, watches, food, cars, architecture, philosophy, religion and so much more. Maybe the day will come. Til then I keep listening back to his music and will until my final breath. You're one in a million Johnny.
This effect he is talking about is so true! Some of the songs make you think you're in a breakup or longing for someone even though you are single.
Dude slays in Pop, Folk, Blues, Rock etc. he’s my favourite artist ever by a country mile.
The dialogue about “why you no love me” really helped me grasp that better. Great interview. Honestly I think that’s one of my favorites on the album (coming from a melody guy), the harmonies and little nuances are amazing but then you just put the lyrics into perspective and blew it away. Awesome.
This was a fantastic interview. Speaking of memories, John’s music is the backdrop to my 20 year marriage. My wife and I first heard “Your Body is a Wonderland” on the radio when we were visiting the US on our honeymoon in 2001. His music, and it’s evolution, has grown with us and we are so thankful for it.
Right here with you....22 years this year. My wife sticks hard to the first album, me....I'm 43...Just as John Mayer, I've changed my tastes. I relate to him as a person. gathering life experience, changing, and with it, the music I feel deeply. I enjoy each any every push into something new, that seems somehow familiar.
Same for us, 15 years.
Every interview with John is like therapy for me. Same with all the albums. Thanks, John.
I love how honest he is… especially about "the search for everything"
Gotta say... I listened to it once and I'm going back for a second time.

"Dont build relationships with scar tissue" when do we count john as a philosopher? This interview is beautiful.
I honestly consider himself as one. And the fact that he's incredibly good friends with Dave Chappelle who as of late speaks through philosophy makes so much sense.
The guy is not your average human at all. His brain is on another level and he is truly a creative genius. I wouldn’t be surprised to find out that he has a extremely high IQ
To me, he always has been very philosophical. His ideas and stories and explanations are always so fascinating.
quite a pretentious and self aware line
@@Sulu-sw3zo But it's great advice as a 40-year-old who has been there and done that and if one thing John is known for is, it's giving advice in his philosophical ramblings.

Can’t remember the last time I was this hyped for an album. I love hearing John’s perspective on life and music. Both unique and insightful. He always seems so genuine now.
Ahhh man, can't wait to go in a personal lockdown with this album and read all the lyrics!
First thing I thought to myself after hearing the entire record for the first time was... "This feels like those songs were with me my entire life." They feel like home, like something I known my entire life. Absolutely genius work.
Watching this interview after listening his new record gives a whole new meaning to his music.
I said “OOOOOHHH” really loud at work when I understood the language as a second language bit
Best way to spend 30 minutes on UA-cam, right here. Truly engaging and enlightening to get a glimpse inside John’s mind and creative process.
This was prime. So proud of Mayer. This record will age really well.
i just finished watching the whole interview and i just had to sit back for a while i pushed my chair back and have this feeling floating inside my mind that this is it for the music the language that truly needs to be convayed the transformation we are all in for the transformantion always. this unpredictable man has inspired me to my core i never thought i would open my mind to even get this inside of me because its sooo blunt raw and brutally beautiful that it hurts me .....

That whole conversation about "Why you no love me", the name of the song, the verse of hurt me once twice three times etc., I can't explain but I swear I was hoping so much it had happened in an interview, like I just needed to hear it! It felt like the satisfaction of pieces fitting together perfectly! Gosh, thank you Johnny!

It's awesome to get a glimpse into his thought process as he made the album. I'm so psyched to finally have it in my possession!
Put John Mayer and Matty Healy of The 1975 in a room together and you could create a whole religion out of what they would say..
Yet another reason why we don't need religion!
Matt seems to deeply understand art, concept, irony, creativity and have a much better vision of self compared to John in this interview. Some of these answers could be in a comedy sketch for me.
Eugh I can’t imagine something I’d be more bored by.
I think Matty would blow John's mind

I was fortunate to have grown up in the 80s listening to all that dynamically creative music. When i hear that stuff back now i don't really feel it in the way i heard it for the first time because the passage of time has blurred the emotions i felt in the 80's listening to it. What Mayer has done with this wonderful collection of songs with deep 80's undertones has in fact time travelled me back to that period even more than the songs from that period. It's like the 80's was in fire terms burning embers about to burn out, Mayer has come along with a load of fresh wood and gallons of fuel and got it blazing again. Man is a genius.
This interview is so life-informing if not life-changing. I've never been a huge fan of his music, but every year I'm slowly developing more of an ear for his stuff. Now that I've heard this interview, I'm going to be listening differently. Thank you for this.
Life-changing? You need to raise the bar.
@@twohandsandaradio Looking back at my comment, it does look like a strong word or phrase to use. But it depends on what I do with the inspiration from the video. Some people talk about watching the Beatles on Ed Sullivan is life-changing. For me seeing the Red Hot chili peppers' video for under the bridge at 12 years old was life-changing, because it inspired me to play guitar, write songs, play in bands, and it gave me a style of music that I could listen to when I was down. So I guess that's what I meant.

The thing he says about false memories just reminds me of the whole Synthwave/Vaporwave movement. I was born in the late 80's, so my memories of that time are basically non-existent, but I understand and identify with 80's music and the whole synthwave feeling of nostalgia. I love it.
We are both 43 and I can safely say that I’ve enjoyed growing up with John Mayer. He truly has the ability to speak for our generation.
Vultures was like that for me as far as I fealt like that song existed before because it was so great , as well as shouldn’t matter but it does. I had to check the writing credits on both to see if they were covers. It was so wild to hear him say that was his intention .

I must have listened to Last Train, 10 times a day, when it was 1st released. I sat and listened to it, experiencing the elements that are reminiscent of past songs but not quite. I'm reminded of 5 songs before I even think of the one that everyone says... I sat and experienced that song, sat with my favorite cat, Biggs, who sadly, passed away on Friday the 16th, and would dance around the room like John, playing his guitar in that big ballroom.
