Вставка
- Опубліковано 12 чер 2024
- John Mayer's new album Sob Rock just dropped today, so Marty Schwartz, his guitar teacher Chris Sherland, and I got together to listen to the unreleased songs on the album. John has said that he wants this album to antagonize people, let's see how far he went.

Can't wait to hear this record on my big boi speakers. Thanks for having me Rhett!
Same here Marty, thanks again man!
@@RhettShull ok the last songs solo REALLY reminds me of Mark Knofler and Emmy Lou's song (solo) This is us. check it out!
I'm glad i'm not the only one who makes that face on I guess I just feel like.
I hope you got it on vinyl Marty.
@@AndrewMasters Every. Single. Time.
It’s funny how John Mayer’s fan base is split into teenage girls and guitarists
True statement ⬆️
So true! It's kind of like going to a Blues Traveler show in the mid-late 90s: the crowd was half junior high kids there for "Hook" and the other half was jam band fans.
Started as a teenage girl, learned to play the guitar. Still a John Mayer fan!
And those who like teenage girls and guitarists
You stole my comment from another video, theif!
"SOB" backwards is 80S.
It's a stretch but I'm kinda stretchy in a pinch.
I saw that too, cause I couldn't fathom the idea of Son Ofa B*tch.... however, it's pretty rare, but John drops an "F" bomb in one song, so, you know he's holding no bars in his feelings in that song. Could be sumbeetch too. Maybe we need to play some songs backwards to discover some Easter Eggs hidden within.
Or Bos and a reference to Springsteen?
He said he wanted layers to his albums release/ name… makes sense, it’s 80s style and also have some sad songs… I bet your right!
S O B, Some Offal Ballads.(no, that is not a misspelling.)
Mind blown
I think a lot of people are initially always underwhelmed with new Mayer stuff because they want the jams and solos. But then you really listen and just appreciate how great of a songwriter he is.
^This is great
You can already get jams and solos with his live stuff and an enormous catalogue of well-documented Dead and Company live shows.
Pretty much what I am going through
Agreed
@@GMBethHarmon you’re right but I’d just like to get another blues album
Fun guitarist gathering around great music!!
Great seeing you here, Tomo! You rock!
Next time swing Tomo the invite, that'd be sick. I'd be interested to hear what he has to say since he knows John so well.
sos ENORME tomo, te amamos
Funk on brother, good to see you round these parts.
Mayer himself posted over 7 minutes of him playing the ‘I Guess I Just Feel Like’ solo in the studio. Worth checking it out if you haven’t seen it. Great video guys 👍
where? can't find it!
@@jasonhartelius should just be on his UA-cam channel
I was just about to post the same message 👍🏻. It’s on UA-cam… pretty easy to find. Seems like it was recorded by John’s iPhone.
ah ha... i've seen that one. was thinking he just posted something new today!
That video is glorious! He improvised all the solo and his grove and the way he felt the music is incredible!
6:48 Mayer said he made this album to “implant false memories”. To spark something that sounds familiar from the past but can never be verified or explained. This reaction is literally what he was trying to instill in the listeners. Must be an awesome feeling to create something and have your intentions received almost exactly. Music is so amazing. And this album is phenomenal.
It’s nice to see my grandpa, my dad, and my brother all in the same video,
🤣 lets the comment section begin
so good
This is the best comment yet lmao
Nice.
This is not a comment, this is a masterpiece
Wild Blue is the banger of the album for me personally, loved it since he leaked it on tiktok
*Knopfler nodding*
@@miked5562 Knopfler spitting blood!
I love "Why You No Love Me" even more after John Mayer explained that it is about being so heartbroken that you end up speaking like a little child who feels abandoned. The whole song makes more sense to me now. The verses sound a little bit like Alan Parsons Project, but I don't know if John Mayer ever had APP as an influence.
Shame that all I get in my head is the cartoon meme guy going "Y U NO LUV ME??"
The chorus reminded me of a typical Backstreet Boys melody
all it took was for me to hear the intro chord progression to fall in love. i think it's one of the most beautiful bits of guitar on JM's discography.
@@feastmode7931 totally agree
I thought it was about an Asian chick that he doesn’t love
"Guess I just..." solo growing on me fast too. That was a blast, thanks for having me on Rhett!
Check your email Chris lol
Thanks Chris!
'Why You No Love Me' knocked me off the ground, picked me back up, then knocked me down again
same here😅
Yep my favourite too
Ssme
For a native speaker is why you no love me, why you no will be there funny to hear? Like, he is speaking like a little child or speaking incorrectly hahaha
@@leonardoleal5092 yes he said in an interview he was speaking like a child.
I think what’s so interesting about Mayer is that his songs grow on you the more you listen to them. The first time I listened to Continuum, I thought it was okay. But then when I went back to it a little while later, it grew on me and got better and better as time when. Even with this album, I felt the same about Shot In The Dark as you guys did the first time I listened to it; but when I listened to it a couple more times it’s grown on me more and more. It’s just a testament to the staying power JM has.
Yes the more you listen, it grows on me too...
Exactly this. 3rd listen through I was fully onboard.
Great point
It took me a while to appreciate John as well. And the older i get, music that took a while to listen end up always on my playlist instead of instant catchy hook most pop use, but never listen again after three months
Continuum is a deserted island album for me!
"WIld Blue" is obviously steeped in a Knopfler-esque Dire Straights vibe, but to me that line you guys were so focused on sounds like a nod toward Steely Dan's Aja.
To me the whole record sounds like a Knopfler tribute album.
Love the song but listen to Right Down the Line by Gerry Rafferty...a little too close. Loving the entire album though and he does the sound justice.
@@moosic2i FINALLY SOMEONE WHO AGREES WITH ME.
I get some JJ Cale vibes too!
@@isaiahfabrizius3424
Makes sense. Knopfler and Cale are fairly similar sounding a lot of the time.
I love being such a music nerd that I sit with my friends and chat about an album in real time, like we're watching a sports game. So cool to watch you guys do it also.
I think Wild Blue deserves more credit than it does. You can tell the inspiration he took from Dire Straits and Knopfler. The songs simplicity in how the little embellishments accentuate the chord progression. Then that solo after the bridge. Nothing super special like I Guess I Just Feel Like, but it gives the song extra life
Yes and Fleetwood Mac, Seven Wonders and Dreams.
Ok, so make this a thing: When new albums drop, you have guests on to listen and give your first impressions. This was fun.
I really enjoyed this format. Please do more first time listening when album drops. Felt real genuine.
John posted on his storys at the time showing the vintage Epiphone casino and the tiny little fender champion
@@dezertson2011 yeah not quite the inside scoop
What I heard was...(I'm full of Sh*t)
I think my heart skipped a beat when I saw this video featured Rhett AND Marty.
Fahhhhhh....me too!
You gotta be f'in kidding me!
Man, the fact you're smashing the chords and notes just by listening, so so impressive and amazing to watch you guys work
I LOVE these new collaboration videos!! Have you thought about having another slide video coming soon? My daughter and I adore your UA-cam channel❤️ You rock!
Thanks Jennifer! I’ll probably do some more slide stuff soon.
Love your take on the album. Your desire to dig deeper into the production of this album is commendable. Looking forward to that video.
“I guess I just feel like” has been my favorite JM song since I first heard it, I’ve been obsessed with that solo - it’s been playing on repeat quite a few times in the last few months at our house. Probably one of the best tones recorded since the last millennium…
Sob rock is exactly what it sounds like
Regardless of attributed influences, a deeply engrained history of heartache-perhaps unbeknownst to too many.
Loved the episode. Love the concept of a listening party from three professional guitarists. Very informative and educational.
I don’t know how he does it but almost all of johns song will just grow on you over time, your first impression is not too excited, just “wow that’s a nice song, I’m gonna learn that solo”, but then you listen to them more and they’ll become masterpieces, I’m currently getting that with his whole “Room For Squares” album
I agree
Great collab! Three of my favorite YT guitar channels. Marty is a legend. Rhett, you just bring such a wide variety of interesting guitar stuff. I’ve really been enjoying Chris’s deep dives on theory. Thanks for all getting together!
This album is begging for a road trip on back roads with the Windows down and the radio up!
Do more of these! This was really cool.
I've been waiting for a guitarist to break down the new album. Love this podcast-esque format
You guys should have more of this kind of show. Loving it
That solo gives me chills every time. 100% agree.
It's like a combination of Clapton's suit era, John Waite's "Missing You" and Glen Frey's 80's solo records. And I mean this as a compliment.
I agree, but not as a compliment. I really found this style of music to be boring and mediocre. I don't get why everyone is so in love with this music.
Good call, but don’t forget Mark Knopfler too!
@@RA_Mille I think that some like a bit of reductionist in their music and art. Its not always about what you can add. It's also about what you can take away. When JM compared his writing process to sculpting instead of writing it hit the nail on the head.
August album, Fleetwood Mac tango in the night and stuff like that
This was such a fun video to watch! Thank you all! I’m absolutely loving this new album!
Saying that “Shot In the Dark” is filler is way off the mark. Listen to it again, it fits the theme of the album seamlessly. Also, by leaning so favorably on “I Guess I Just Feel Like”, I think you’re missing out on the beauty and simplicity of the other songs. It’s by far the most Mayer-like song on the entire album. Although it’s a great song, it was refreshing to hear some of the different sounds the other songs brought to attention.
Ugh that just sounds like such a snobby guitarist take lol. Makes me not wanna watch
It wasn't at first, but after a handful of listens now, Shot in the Dark is probably my favorite on the album. "Shouldn't Matter..." and "til the right one comes' are also super catchy/been stuck in my head since Friday
@@n.s.3812 I fought liking Wild Blue myself but after a few listens, I’m convinced there isn’t a bad song on the album. I feel Mayer had to put a couple signature type songs on the album just to keep his main fan base somewhat engaged. I personally like the stuff that doesn’t immediately sound like him necessarily. This is an entertaining video, but I think the bigger picture is kind of being missed, just my thoughts. It’s been a while since I’ve purchased a Mayer album, not for any reason necessarily. I bought this one yesterday because you can easily listen to it in its entirety. I don’t buy any vinyl for a handful of songs with some added filler, it’s all or not at all.
@@n.s.3812 If the whole album had a Shot In The Dark vibe? Holy shit would’ve been epic.
Shot in the dark is so
Springsteen human touch
Don't forget that Fleetwood Mac Dreams feel as the start of Wild Blue
Been listening to this in the car during these few hot days with the windows down driving by the sea during sunset....and these songs keeps sounding better every time I press play!
I think this is some of the best music I've listened to in years.
Hey I totally agree! That’s what I’ve been doing lately.
This is great! I love watching guitarists react to another guitarist's music. especially because it's featuring Mr. Marty. I'm an old GCC member. I didn't practice enough to do anything but was able to inspire my son who is now killing some John Mayer live solos. Rock on peeps!
Super cool moment, I sub to all three guys and I really enjoy stuff like this!!
Wild to see you collaborate with Marty lmao fuck yeah
Maybe this is a stretch because I’m an old (55) geezer, relatively speaking, but I’m hearing a heavy George Harrison vibe on “Why You No Love Me.” The melody, harmony, and slide guitar would fit on most of George’s solo work.
Yes!
Same!
Initially thought of the Beatles. Because.
Amazing format! It's fascinating to listen to professionals analyzing music
Strat into a cranked Champ was, of course, also the Layla era Clapton sound... which I'm sure both Mayer and Don Was know
Such a great idea! And great knowledge!
Greetings from Germany
The Covered In Rain solo will never be topped!
Facts
Unrivaled
i mean theres some SERIOUS slow dancing solos
You guys are awesome. I really enjoyed this, and Chris is such a great guy and great player. Love the album, and will enjoy it more over time.
Amazing to watch the interpretation spontaneous and so quickly recognizing progression, scale, historical time lines. Great stuff and fun...thanks for doing it and letting us in.
Well, "Shouldn't Matter But It Does" just broke my heart into many little pieces. I enjoy this album and thank you fellows for reviewing it.
I think its a great song. Spoke to me too.
@@musicismyreligion5213 thank you ❤️
Make no mistake about it - Mayer watched this.
This was a great video man! I didn't expect to enjoy it this much. Keep it up brother!
This needs to be a thing again, maybe some live streams, people used to hang out and check out albums back in the day
Mayer's last three albums all grew on me over time. So much so that they're my three favorites of his work. I wonder how this one will stand up over time?
Not very well!
Wild Blue is reminiscent of Gerry Rafferty - Right Down The Line. Definitely has a Knopfler feel in the solo.
The Album is amazing, this Video is amazing! I'm so glad good music exist and we enjoy and feed on every bit of it!
Awesome video! Loved it guys
Mayer's take on woman tone. Glad others see the greatness in that track. I think one of those runs was very Derek Trucks BB King concert vibe.
He observed derek intensily during that solo lol. Looks like he picked something up from that.
Why is copying associated with greatness?
He talked a lot about the writing process last night on Clubhouse during a listening party. Wonder if you can find a recording of that somewhere -- some really cool insight
I think this album is in my top five of 2021 so far. Just love this record so much!
I need that tone too. Looking forward for your update video!
@rosscampbell covered the cool bendy thingy nicely when the IG post came out originally from John.
This was a great time-now go back and do an episode covering Mayer’s “Born & Raised” album!
Indeed.. incredible album
His best imo
@@allenbell1427 agreed.
Great Video! The three of you need to do this monthly!!!
This is the content that I’ve been waiting for, listen-alongs from your perspective
So I loved Shot In The dark, was my favorite. That song really spoke to me more than any other song on the record.
I really enjoyed his Covered in the Rain guitar solo from his Any Given Thursday live album
Yea
The real gem of this video is the mini rig rounddown of the "I guess I just feel like" guitar tone.
I never thought “what do guitarists think of other guitarists?” What a great idea! I love music and John M especially! Enjoy your hole setup!! Wonderful. I gots hear this album
Marty without a guitar is just... illegal 😂😂
No - it's Marty with a guitar.
I always get a bad taste in my mouth when I hear "guitarists" give their opinion on John's music. Especially his newer stuff. They always want to hear some complex solo or some gritty riffs and fail to realize that John is hardly ever going for those things. All of his things are melodic and follow along with the structure of his songs so well. I saw an interview recently where he said that in this album he was looking at it from less of an artists POV but a directors POV. He said he had these 10 songs locked in, just like scenes in a movie. That if he wanted to create another scene that it would have to be in a different movie (album.)
So to sit there and say that this song, or that song, seems like a filler is just comedy to me. This whole album gels together just like any great movie gels. It has the feeling, the tempo and just the overall vibe. Just excellent.
Love this vid, guys! This was me this morning when I downloaded the album from Spotify. I'm an instant fan of this album. The blend of 80's elements reimagined blows me away. Born in '77, he was a kid during the 80's. I think that growing up with musical styles and vibes that makes them become part of you.
Its funny, coming from somebody who probally has similar musical taste as yourself that i have a completly opposite opinion. Not one original idea on the whole album. Plagiarizing other artist's work is not artistic. If you want a "how to" or "soundalike", than this is the perfect album.
This video is such a gem...
Enjoyed a lot
"I Guess I Just Feel Like" came out on Spotify as a single in 2019... and yeah the solo is killer! I also heard John himself say (somewhere... I'm sorry I can't remember) that he was working on a specific lick from that solo "for years" (paraphrasing).
It was the guitar center video with him and his silver sky if I recall correctly
This was my EXACT reaction when I first heard this album. Pretty safe for the most part, a couple of interesting songs that I like (why you no love me and wild blue) and "I guess I just feel like" absolutely kills although we've heard a million times already.
EXCELLENT SHOW! 3 great guitar players! Great new CD!
Your channel and Beato’s are seriously the best music channels on UA-cam. I could listen to you guys talk music forever.
man ! I've been obsessing about that solo and that tone too ! I also thought it was a kind of fuzz face pedal then I heard about the "vibro champ theory" ....make that video soon please rhett ! Somebody (Zach?) should do a pedal reproducing that sound as it's so good. I'm not a fuzz fan but I'd buy one just to get that. To me it's sitting somewhere between a fuzz face and and a fulltone octavia
Definitely a little fender amp cranked, ask @johnmayergear on Instagram, he seems to know everything about his gear. I remember John actually posted the little amp on his instagram story a couple years ago
Slow dancing and Gravity are John's best songs imo. Just wonderful melodies and tasteful instrumentals.
No love for Your Body is a Wonderland!
@@CorbCorbin Hmm..honestly,
Under most circumstances, I turn the Radio station when his "wonderland" song is repeated again. The stations played it literally too death, therefore I don't really care for that song. It's a shame really. Cause its really well done,
like most his stuff. Cheers
Really enjoyed this video guys! 👍🏼 I love the album too
You can really hear Fujitas teachings in his beautiful use of triads. I wanted more bluesy stuff from him cuz hes sooo good at it. Buuut this is nice. Thanx guys!!
It’s not something that’ll blow you away (even Mayer himself knows this, judging by the album cover and title), it’s just some good comfort music with some nostalgic production, it’s just a great bit of escapism and 80s nostalgia with some classic Mayer stylings.
This both good and suck because... man, i want to see JM put out some juice stuff, been seeing him teasing this album on Instagram for a while
Guess it's just not what i expected
Yacht rock
It's a great album. The man is gifted
Dope. Happy to see a Marty Collab.
This was a really cool dealio guys. More of this please. Thanks.
"Last train home" is so Eric Clapton's late 80's scene.
I thought exactly the same thing. Definitely a nod to Clapton. All the little guitar fills sounds so Eric Clapton. I like it
I think it sounds a bit like Toto
@@allenbell1427 I agree, the percussionist is a Toto bandmember and the keyboard player was on tour with them i think, so that probably adds to the Toto-sound :)
The music video definitely takes inspiration from the Forever Man video
@@joegallacher6932 just watched it and you’re right, definitely inspired by that video. I bet Fender is kicking themselves in the ass now for not finding a way to resign him
The Wild Blue melody sounds to me like Journey’s Send Her My Love
Great Video! You guys should definitely do more collab videos together, we can see the chemistry! Another massive John Mayer fan here! I agree with Rhett, "I guess it just feels like" is my favourite song in the album!
You guys have to do this more often!! It doesn't matter it's not with new release records!!
I love this album! John Mayer rocks :D
'And I Love Her' has the Beatles line they're talking about
Please do more of these!
Great to see Chris on Rhett’s channel - well done Marty. I also agree with Marty, Chris is an amazing teacher - his Patreon is awesome and inspiring. His commitment to students is absolute.
That 3rd song reminds me of early Dire Straits and the tone that Mark Knopfler used by then.
I think the I Guess I Just Feel Like solo is recorded with an Epiphone Casino into a Vibroverb?
it was great listening to you guys talk about this album. it was amazing but after a while I wanted him to just rock out. he's the king of mellow and so talented. the 65 year old me was having problems keeping the 19 year old me at bay - like John Mayer is in humble pie with Frampton kind of wish
Love this idea 💡 and collaboration
“this antagonizes me” “out of left field” but you like it right?
John Mayer posted on his instagram story a while back to explain the amp he was using. He was cheeky and pointed at his SSS then panned to the actual amp; a Silverface (or blackface, can’t remember) Vibrochamp 👍
Came here to say this … it’s not some insider secret lol
2 years ago lol ...like that new people will discover the song !
hey this is cool! I was actually visiting Nashville as this album dropped and I remember the anticipation of right where I was when you were recording this!
I spent all day in work re listening to this album. It’s been years since I just lived with a record for a day. I love it.
