Coconut oil research: www.dogsnaturallymagazine.com...
_______________________________________________
OK so we've all heard that coconut oil is good for dogs … and that's not entirely untrue. But there's something in coconut oil that can really harm your dog's gut. It can undo all the good that coconut oil can do.
OK, the healthy part of coconut oil is something called a medium chain fatty acid. Coconut oil contains about 8% caprylic acid, 7% capric acid and smaller amounts of other medium chain fats like myristic and palmitic acid. These fats have natural antiviral, antibacterial and anti fungal properties. So that means medium chain fats can be used as a natural topical antibiotic or anti fungal for dogs with skin issues. And there's also research showing that if you give your dog coconut oil in his food, it can help fight yeast infections and improve brain function. Now, what's unique about medium chain fats is they way they're digested. They're quickly broken down by an enzyme called lipase and then they travel directly to the blood and then the liver, where they're converted to ketones. The liver can use ketones to feed its own cells and to help it detoxify - and the rest go back into the blood where they're used for fuel in the brain and body. This is great because other fats are mainly just stored as fat. So that's the good news.
The dark side of coconut oil is that about half of it is another fat called lauric acid. Up until the 70's lauric acid was categorized as a long chain fatty acid because is has 12 carbon atoms … and that makes a difference because the length of the fatty acid determines how it's digested in the body. The other medium chain fats have 10 carbon atoms or less, which means they can easily be converted to ketones. But lauric acid uses a completely different metabolic pathway and isn't converted to ketones. When fats contain 12 or more carbon atoms, it's harder it is for the liver to digest them so they just get dumped into fat stores. But back in the 70's, people started making and promoting both coconut and palm oil - there was a big push in the industry and, mysteriously, scientists suddenly called lauric acid a medium chain fatty acid. It doesn't matter what you call it because lauric acid isn't digested like medium chain fats.
OK, so there are two significant problems with coconut oil. First, is the huge amount of lauric acid in it and second is that coconut oil is nearly all saturated fat. Back in the 70's when they started pushing coconut oil as a superfood, they didn't know all that much about gut health and the microbiome. But today, we know that your dog needs healthy bacteria and a healthy gut lining. Without this, he can develop leaky gut, which happens when the cell walls in the gut stretch out and allow undigested food, bacteria, yeast and viruses to get out of the gut and into the blood and organs. This causes really harmful levels of chronic inflammation and you'll see the organs and immune system start to break down. This chronic inflammation is the cause of nearly all chronic disease in the body, including cancer, allergies, joint pain and organ disease. Thanks to gut research, we even know that clogged arteries are caused by chronic inflammation. So now that we know more about the gut, scientists are taking a new look at foods. And new research shows that coconut oil is a real problem for dogs and people too.
First, coconut oil is a saturated fat. Most food these days is higher in saturated fat than it used to be, thanks to feeding grains to food animals. So even dogs eating a raw diet are eating a diet that's too high in saturated fats - so adding more saturated fat from coconut oil will only make the diet even less unbalanced. Studies show that diets high in saturated fat cause an imbalance in gut bacteria and cause gut inflammation, which can lead to leaky gut. Next, there's a 2018 study from Brazil that showed that lauric acid increases gut inflammation - and more than any other saturated fat. And another study showed that no other fat increased endotoxin levels in the blood more than coconut oil. Endotoxins come from the gut bacteria and are supposed to stay in the gut and never enter the body. But coconut oil cause gut inflammation, which lets endotoxins get through, plus saturated fats and lauric acid produce a more toxic form of an endotoxin called LPS or lipopolysaccharide. LPS triggers cytokines, which means even more chronic inflammation.

I was all excited about the benefits of coconut oil then I came across Karen's negative video 🙄
Hey man, been using coconut oil in dogs foods for years. My family used to breed bird dogs and it’s extremely helpful. My vet is amazing and shows the facts. He has highly recommend coconut oil for dogs. Mixed with other vitamins and a good food. My dogs are nothing but healthy.
@@robertnation516 thanks for the feedback. I started using the coconut oil about a month ago and changed my dog food to salmon. Our dogs face looks alot better. I also give him plain yogurt with his meals.
@@robertnation516 research is evolving all the time. The research from years ago when you started using coconut oil has changed as they studied it more. What Dana has said in this video is absolute truth and current results from research. She's not telling you how to raise your dogs, just passing on what science has found. Your the only one who can do what you think is right after hearing it.
Karen? Maybe you should do a little more research then. At the end of the day coconut oil is 80 percent saturated fat. How much is that really? Compared to a tablespoon of olive oil, a tablespoon of coconut oil contains about six times the amount saturated fat. (One more note for comparison: Lard, aka bacon fat, is only about 40 percent saturated fat.) The current recommendation is to consume 13g to 20g of saturated fat a day and a tablespoon of coconut oil has about 12g. Saturated fat raises the risk of cardiovascular disease and internal inflammation. Current studies are making a case for MCT oil supplements as this "Karen" has recommended. Maybe your the one who needs to evolve with the current research?
@@jodi2462 Imagine saying your trusted research to a whole country that has been producing and consuming coconut oil for century. Yes studies and research are indeed facts but does coconut oil alone causes death? NO! I live in SEAsia and we can only produce coconut oil and just a few years ago we started producing palm oil, we cannot produce olive tree because of our climate, olive oil is expensive because we can only import it from outside.
Now if you people which I assume a consumer of the highly praised OLIVE OIL, would you say you are healthier than us, you have a longer life span than us consuming a saturated fat from coconut oil? No it is not the case.
Enjoyed your presentation. What are your views on Camelina Oil for dogs. Is it a good alternative?
Is black seed oil a better option?
Holy shit, I’ve never seen someone say so much nothing before making a point.
I have lol
I have a feeling this lady only feeds her dogs free range raw beef
Talk about overthinking it
Hi, do you think organic flaxseed oil can be a better option?
Definintely not. Flax seed only contains alpha-linolenic acid and very, very little of it will be converted to ETA, EPA and DHA.
Thank you so much for this knowledgeable and informative video. So much misinformation out there about this very topic. What about using coconut oil directly on a dogs coat to help with skin irritation/ allergies/ coat health etc. is it good/safe? How should it be applied?
I use MCT for my pups, they also only get grass fed/ free range meats. They honestly eat better than me 🤣
Yes! Wild caught salmon for my Chesador! Nothing but the best for my baby 🐕 🥰😁
Wonderful!
I hear ya! I would buy them all organic and grass fed etc if I could too! I always get the best I can afford. At very least, I know they’re eating what I could eat (human grade) which is far better than the alternative.
Mines too lol
I hope I didn’t ruin my Buddy’s gut health. I’d frequently give him coconut oil as a pup!😥
I've read research stating benefits of MCT oil for reducing seizure frequency and severity in dogs. Can you please recommend an oil or supplement with MCT but without lauric acid for dogs? There are some on the market for pets but they all seem to have lauric acid.
Try this one: www.amazon.com/Nutiva-Unflavored-16-Ounce-Friendly-Smoothies/dp/B06Y4SRC1L?th=1
Have you looked at Cocotherapy MCT triplex 3? I see it says 8% Lauric acid. Many people report about how it reduces their dog's seizure. I use it for my Lab's skin. Phenomenal. I am not a vet.
Wow... I've been researching adding coconut oil to my dog's food in order to help him with constipation. I've seen many people (including veterinarians) recommending doing this @ 1tsp for every 20 Lbs. of weight. This is the First video I've come across outlining any dangers of coconut oil. I have only used the best ie. Cold-pressed / unrefined coconut oil for my best friend , and only started this a few days ago when I noticed he's not pooping as often as usual. It's unimaginable how even veterinarians would be unaware of any dangers of Lauric acid for dogs, yet I want to learn as much as possible in order to help my buddy. Thank you for sharing this information, I will explore the pure MCT oil next.
Mct is good. I have been giving my dog coconut oil for 8 years now…..the research she talks about is not necessarily correct!
@@Lucky-wt6fg Indeed, and between the 2, MCT oil is definitely more expensive than Cold-pressed organic unrefined coconut oil.
I was recommended organic canned pumpkin and a little plain Greek yogurt with my dog when she was backed up. I also bought dry freezed no grain turkey meal I would hydrate with water which added healthier moisture to diet, than most canned foods.
I have another boxer and the same with the first, she chews on her feet. I have been looking for something to keep her from chewing on her feet. I had read that coconut oil is good food skin and coat for dogs. What can I use? When I take her to the vet they will want to start giving all sorts of meds . Which cost a fortune. I want something natural???? Can you recommend something?
Are you a licensed veterinarian professional?
Very helpful!!
Thank you!
In need of making Satin balls for 5 dogs coming into rescue who were starved. What fat do you recommend as a substitute?
You could try olive oil (antioxidant) and hempseed oil (GLA).
I’m a little confused, I give my dog Nutiva MCT oil you mentioned instead of coconut oil with Lauric acid He has seizures and found a tumor on his brain. Does the oil I’m giving him have all the bad gut inflammation problems talked about in the video since it comes from coconut oil ? Do I stop giving it ? He is on Phenobarbital as well. I give him medicinal mushrooms, turmeric, Chinese supplements.
Please continue whatever you are doing. Phenobars has effect on liver. There is a lot of better option in Homeopathy.

I don’t want to feed my dogs coconut oil but I want to rub it on his fur/skin is that okay at least ?
what do you recommend for moisturising paws?
I use coconut oil on my pup's dry nose.
What oil do you recommend? My vet said to give them fish oil.
I feed my dog CocoTherapy coconut oil every day! I eat it myself as well.
What is MCT and where can I find this please and thank you
I recently got a bottle at WalMart, but not in the grocery aisle near the olive oils- It was locked up near the pharmacy with the sports powders. It's Nutiva Organic C8 MCT Oil; Out of 14g, 13.6g is Caprylic acid (C8). Cost around $18.99.
Hello, first thank you for the clever input. So you say MCT oil is better than coconut oil but also not very natural to eat it so I wonder if there are herbs that do the same things which ones are they? I have got a highly allergic dog and I can’t put much on him against ticks so coconut oil was a good solution. Also I choose coconut oil or coconut rasps to prevent worms. More over at the moment he’s only allowed to eat rabbit which is not very tatty. In Germany you cannot find just rabbit fat so I wanted to increase the fat through coconut oil. What else can I take? Thank you in advance for an answer. Best wishes and happy holidays, Steffi
That's a great question! Yes, there are completely safe alternatives to coconut oil. Pumpkin seeds work great for most worms. I think coconut oil is fine topically. And I would look at adding hempseed oil and green lipped mussel oil to increase fat content and even a little olive oil.
Thank you. I use pumpkin seeds as a treatment twice a year. Can I use it as a prevention? How about coconut flakes? We do have greenlip mussel powder, never seen oil though. The powder I can’t use at the moment cause I busy finding out what caused his problems now…thanks again for an answer in advance!!!
Thanks for the information. How long does it take to eliminate the inflammation issue once using coconut oil is terminated?
It would depend on the dog and how inflamed their gut is. Starting a soil based probiotic will help heal the gut.

MCT Oil is a great alternative!
is organic sunflower oil the best oil to cook their food with then ? or is there something better
Animal fats 💫
No….sunflower oil is absolutely no good…….no good for humans either…..no veg oil is any good.
Sunflower oil not good because it goes rancid easily. Animal fats are better or olive oil.
I been told yes sunflower is better . Coconut are good for itching skin or for a bath breath

Good to know. What about pumpkin in dogs food? I've heard it's good but really don't know. Thanks for the info!
Pumpkin can be good to help digestive issues but it’s often overused. It can do both - help constipation but also cause it.

Very confusing, because people who follow the keto diet or carnivore diet , say complete opposite with regards to sat fats. Sat fat is not bad for you and does not cause inflammation. It is the carbs and sugar that causes inflammation. Same for humans.
Sorry, but sugar is actually good for you. Same for dogs.
Since monolaurin (which is a lauric acid derivative) seems to have a pretty good safety profile, I am wondering about the validity of the studies that supposedly suggest that lauric acid is not safe.
One thing that we know is that monolaurin has anti-pathogenic qualities (acting to kill bacteria and possibly also viruses or other pathogens). And so I wonder if the inflammation that you mention could have been due to a Herxheimer reaction and thus not necessarily be a bad thing.
It's hard to evaluate any of the claims being mentioned here without the citations though.
One also has to consider that any antibiotic, natural or otherwise, will kill bacteria and will not discriminate between friendlies and other bacteria. Antibacterial is antibacterial, no matter what those bacteria do.
I don't think that is true at all, that "antibacterial is antibacterial" and that antibacterial substances do not discriminate.
Here is a study that suggests that lauric acid kills harmful bacteria while leaving healthy ones intact, for instance.
> For human gut microbes, LA was shown to have low antimicrobial activity against commensal lactic acid bacteria, but high antimicrobial activity against pathogenic Bacteroides and Clostridium, suggesting that LA might modulate intestinal health, as confirmed by the proposed method.

Across the board, particular commercial antibiotics are accepted as being especially appropriate for treating some types of bacterial infections but less good for treating others. Which is why prescribing the right one for the particular disease that people are suffering from is important.
Based on everything that I have read in the past, natural substances with antibacterial action (like garlic, oregano, cinnamon and coconut) tend to have the advantage of being more likely to kill bacteria that are bad for us and less likely to kill bacteria that are bad for us. Which is why consuming those foods tends to be considered to be safe (at least for humans and also in small quantities for dogs) rather than something that needs to be prescribed by a doctor.
While glyphosate has been reported to be especially likely to kill probiotic bacteria and to leave the bad microbes in the body and in the soil (including especially bad fungi but also bad bacteria) intact. Which is the thing about it that makes it especially dangerous and in need of being banned.
@@Lisa_Petrison Antibiotics are not used per se against certain strains of bacteria. Each antibiotic is deadly to bacteria in different ways (ie some alter the bacterium's DNA, some break down the cell membrane, some inhibit protein production and some are just broad spectrum). This means some families of bacteria can be more susceptible to them. Since there are as many as 500 different bacteria species in the gut, you cannot guarantee that these specific antibiotic actions won't also target commensal bacteria. So it's not all that simple for bacteria to choose "good" or "bad". There will always be species caught in friendly fire. I think food-based antibiotics are safer than prescription ones because they're not drugs and don't carry drug-related side effects. But as we learn more about the microbiome, it seems the best strategy is not "anti" - the only reason pathogenic bacteria get a stronghold in the gut is because there aren't enough commensal bacteria to stop them from getting to attachment sites. Over and over, research shows that a healthy gut (hence immune system) has two things: 1. Lots of bacteria, and 2. A wide variety of bacteria. Why would we want to threaten this with any type of antibiotic, whether it's food or drug? It's far more effective to support the gut with the right foods.
Lauric acid and the other acids in Coconut oil does not harm a dog in anyway... However! If a person gives their dog a Coconut oil that has been bleached and other man made chemicals added to it, then yes, that Coconut oil brand will most definitely harm a dog especially with repeated use... However! organic Virgin or extra Virgin, unrefined, Coldpressed Coconut oil that has zero man made chemicals will not harm a dog.. Lauric acid/ Monolaurin does not kill good bacteria and yeast flora.. Lauric acid/Monolaurin actually acts as a probiotic booster almost like prebiotics and does it by helping the natural good gut bacteria and yeast by helping to kill off bad bacteria and yeast... Also, incase you didn't know, Monolaurin is not only found in Coconut oil. Monolaurin is also found in the breast milk of animals and humans. Monolaurin is the key active substance in a mother's dog milk that protects her pups from bad bacteria and yeast. Even the meat industry use Monolaurin in processing raw meat because of its strong antibiotic, Antimicrobial, Antifungal, Antiviral and anti-parasitic makeup.. I think you have Lauric acid and Monolaurin mixed up with antibiotics lol 😆 Lauric acid does not have an negative effect on good bacteria and yeast, once Lauric acid is coverted into monolaurin in the body, Monolaurin doesn't have any negative effects on good bacteria and yeast. Both Lauric acid and Monolaurin will however totally destroy bad bacteria and yeast. Even antibiotic resistant strains of bacteria and yeast. You need to do better research on Coconut oil, Lauric acid and Monolaurin as in one.. Dogs are born drinking Monolaurin from their moms tits like literally lol 😆... By the way, Coconut oil is an natural anti-inflammatory 🤣
Is lauric acid bad for humans as well?? I’m taking a monolaurin supplement for myself now?
We are only aware of the research of lauric acid pertaining to dogs, it would be best to check with a human naturopath or doctor.

Bs. It actually does wonders for a lot of different things
It is bad when they say it is bad, does coconut oil alone can cause death or sickness? I don't think so, in my country coconut oil is like water you can find it everywhere and we have been producing and consuming it for centuries or even when humans ever created or evolved. Olive oil or any other kind of oil cannot be produced because of our tropical climate we only have coconut oil, so are we sick or not healthier than you who do not consume it? do you have a longer life span because of it? I don't think so, coconut oil is good we Asians are the evidence of it we consume more than everyone else in the world for our pets they can have it but not regularly. Every oil has its own pros and cons, there is no perfect one. Coconut oil is our super food research and studies cannot change that.
Um, this information is incorrect, im sorry. You are not helping anyone by spreading this misinformation. Especially because dogs with leaky gut have been helped with Coconut Oil or MCT Oil (Coconut Oil is the cheapest & simplest way to get MCT Oil). I learned a lot about what I should consume when I learn what I should be giving my sweet fur baby!
The flesh can still disrupt the gut's microbiome. You could try MCT oil instead. It doesn't have lauric acid.
@@DogsNaturallyMagazineDNM Well darn. Coconut was on a lot of natural lists as a de-wormer. Good to know, thanks for the insight.
I always thought feeding coconut oil to dogs sounded crazy. How would a dog in the wild eat coconut oil? Sometimes we have to use common sense.
Hi! In Florida, coconuts lying on the ground is pretty common and my dogs love to tear them up and lick the insides. Obviously, we take the coconuts away pretty quickly once destroyed, but it is reasonable that any dog in a tropical climate is going to love coconuts.
@@tat2dbluedonkey I imagine they are not getting a concentrated dose when eating coconut like they are when they eat coconut oil. Dogs will eat anything it seems, good or bad. However, adding it to their food does not sound good vs. an occasional snack in the yard.
The fats in coconut oil are beneficial, but the lauric acid is not good for the gut. Trying an MCT oil is a great way to get the beneficial fats.
@@DogsNaturallyMagazineDNM I feed my dogs a variety of animal fats including brain. They seem to be doing ok without coconut oil.
yeah, how would dogs find aspirin or that tree bark it was based on. pretty sure it was jungles of south africa.
point is….that thought process is flawed.
Your information is all over the place, like one big paragraph..can you show us the studies you keep quoting and that you have pieced together?
Be aware people dont take knowledge from people who don't show valid studies (not just a lab study on rats) or any single source, its called researching fully..if things work for you positively then carry on
I don't have a dog. :(
You can be my dog
Actually MCT’s travel to the gut then to portal vein then to liver. Only certain MCT’s are easily converted to ketones. And not “all fat is stored as fat.” After that lauric acid is inferior however lauric acid encompasses immune benefits. Agree if you want an efficient energy source and/or are looking to take a dog into therapeutic nutritional ketosis MCT superior specifically C8. “Studies show diets high in saturated fat .. cause gut inflammation which can lead to leaky gut” WHOAH please please learn to read and interpret nutritional and epidemiology studies. There is no isolated sat fat study showing this. Look at the other items included in the diet. Humans heal microbiome all the time on animal based / high sat dat diet - I run microbiome / stool tests proving. This video should be taken with a grain of salt.
Look at his paws, he have always some type of allergy problem
You seem to be someone with no knowledge of dangers of sugar in humans giving other people advice i use this stuff for flea treatmesnt.lets see your dogs
This has been debunked numerous times. Seriously becoming more concerned about your topics including one supporting Apoquel which is one of the worst meds on the market.
I agree Apoquil is terrible!!! It has killed dogs so has cytopoint I would never give my dog another one !! That junk should be off the market but then again a lot of things should be off the market!
What part of it is being debunked and who debunked it with what research?
On what planet have we ever promoted Apoquel or Cytopoint? Last I remember, we stick our necks out every day by telling people about the dangers of these products.
@@DogsNaturallyMagazineDNM good to hear!!
@@DogsNaturallyMagazineDNM I agree, I remember reading on your site the dangers of apoquel and cytopoint. I would wonder where mz. Elizabeth Pearson gets her information.
This is fack
Pessimism
Coconut oil as long as it’s cold pressed virgin coconut oil is very good for your dogs
