I've always thought the Safety Car was kinda awesome. The F1 cars are weaving around behind, barely going fast enough to make their systems work properly.....but at the front is a VERY powerful road car, which is tearing around at what would be an impressive pace in any other context.

Iv always thought the same, that car would keep most fast cars at bay and then you ha e an f1 car trying desperately to keep heat in the tyres weaving all over the place behind them, just puts into context how fast the f1 cars really are 😳

@@juliusscizor8122 depending on which tire compound the car is using, there is an optimal range of temperature and pressure for these tires for perfomance. Having it in this optimal temperature is extremely vital for the cars

The medical car is the one car that starts every race and is featured in every race for sure....the hope always is that it never will be used in the race....but still it too might be full of different type of tech than the safety car. SO YUP...THE MEDICAL CAR TOO....

@@finnzimmermann8390 it takes quit long voor this car to reach that speed. Also the speed in cornering is much slower due to a lack of downforce compared to f1 cars.
@@finnzimmermann8390 It's all about cornering speed, e.g. a bugatti chiron can beat a f1 car on a straight (if you have a 10km straight, and the f1 car has a high downforce setup)

@@marinesr7 Safety car is used on Thursdays to check the timing system, sensors, camera and radio systems, track safety checks and so many technical details. Yes it needs to be over engineered.

Even during a Safety Car event, it's still a Mercedes leading the race. So on a usual 1-2 would be now a Mercedes 1-2-3

Great video! Unfortunately, some questions weren't answered. For example, do Bernd and his co-driver sit in the car all race, or do they sit outside but close-by? What tires does the car run on, for example during a dry race that suddenly turns wet?
We're happy to answer any other questions! Both Bernd and his co-driver sit in the car all race, ready to roll when needed. And they use all-weather road tyres, whatever the weather

Having been a marshal at one of the races had the chance to be up close with the safety car, the previous version(2011-12), I think. Its a beast. Looks absolutely amazing.
Would love to see a sequel to this, of how the car is set up, its maintenance, inventory carried to each race, backup car, etc.

they never run slicks, but they have a spare car , and have had races where they nearly run out of fuel
they do have their own FIA mechanics to look after the safety cars and the medical cars.
I think they just use All-weather Pirelli tyres on it.

So can anybody tell about it? Who is Charlie? And why they send Thanks for him? 🤔
Ratibor Raskolnikov Charlie Whiting was the race director of F1. He pushed for a lot of things pertaining to safety, especially after Jules Bianchi’s horrific crash in 2014 that ultimately took his life. But beyond that, he was the guy that all the drivers would come to about regulations and all the red tape that they have to deal with once they come onto the track. He wanted F1 to stay exciting, but also as safe as anyone could keep it. At the end of the day he was a genuine fan, just like the rest of us.

Charlie Whiting, who passed away at the 2019 Australian GP and was the long standing race director.
I always thought when I was a kid, a safety car driver would wear something like police suits inside . And the car interior was super fancy like a merc car would be

In Formula 1, when drivers are following the safety car, they often weave or zigzag to maintain tire temperature and keep the tires in optimal condition. The zigzagging or weaving helps prevent the tires from cooling down too much, as reduced tire temperature can lead to a loss of grip when the race restarts.
The only person keeping all those drivers in check and making sure they don't go nuts
Question: How fast does the driver go? Does he go like on a trackday or just casual high speed driving?
Proper trackday, this guy is really pushing it usually, really makes you think if drivers are complaining that he is too slow.

The next safety car is rumored to be a 1994 Suzuki swift. It will definitely do its job at limiting the speed of the cars on track. Hopefully they get the one where air conditioning comes standard.
I hope he gets to keep it when he retires. I know it's a stretch, but he's been doing it for two decades, so I think he's earned it.
