We took the Jeep Gladiator and new suspension up to North Carolina to the Outer Banks (OBX) for some adventure beach driving and overland camping at Ocracoke Island, Cape Hatteras National Sea Shore, and Corolla Beach, along NC12. The Islands and beach driving are way bigger than I could have imagined.
We also picked up a new 270 degree nomadic batwing style awning from ‪@overlandvehiclesystems1700‬ along the way and did an install on the road. Unfortunately, I lost the audio to this project. I also used my ‪@RHINOUSA‬ tire deflators multiple times to air down and the Harbor Freight Air compressor to Air Back up and re-air the tires (tyres) They are both a budget friendly option that really speeds up the air-down and air-up process. We also stopped at the historic district of Corolla where they have a free air station. The place was top rate and the bathrooms were clean and fully tiled with marble.
Suspension: It took me a little over a year to select the right kit for my Jeep Gladiator Rubicon, and it really controls the ride even when fully loaded!
For my personal setup, I chose to go with the ‪@ClaytonOffRoad‬ 3.5" Overland Plus Kit. They have a great reputation. James was super helpful when deciding between the HD Springs or the Normal Springs. I'm extremely happy going with the HD springs and know that I'll be able to fully load the Gladiator out in the future with the load carrying capacity to grow! I also went with the ‪@GoRanchoSuspension‬ RS9000XL Shocks.
I've driven the Jeep now for about 5,000 miles, and the Rancho Clayton Combo is really spot on. I'm cruising around city and gravel roads on as little as setting 3 front and rear currently, although you can jump back up to level 4 or 5. The Great thing about the Rancho Shocks is you have 9 different levels to play around with to find the best ride for you at a budget price! I'd love to install a full set of the Rancho RockGear in the future.

Like most of you, I don't have a lift, and did this in my driveway with the help of my ‪@harborfreight‬ Badland Offroad Jack, and the full line of ‪@MilwaukeeTool‬ M12 Fuel Tools including the M12 Ratchet, M12 Fuel Ratchet, M12 Fuel Stubby Impact, M12 Fuel Hackzall (sawzall), M12 Fuel right angle impact, some Craftsman wrenches, ‪@GEARWRENCHTools‬ Flexible gear wrenches, dead blow hammer, and several other Metric and SAE tools from Husky, Dewalt, Icon, and others.
My tools and off road jack travel with me on my trips as added insurance.

Nice video, but it's Ocracoke (like the vegetable and the drink) Ocra-coke. Hatteras (is like Hater-ass)...

Last year was my first time driving on the beach in the outer banks. Going back in July to do the same! Great video

Dude...LMBO The sound effects I was making while you were driving looking at the air-down kit. Weird how that works out. So many things working through your mind...filming, daylight dwindling...wanting to see the sights... Not picking. Laughing with as it's something I would do...lol

You really can’t see the front fender from the drivers seat and I was too busy filming…Thanks for watching and glad you got a good laugh out of it. Those bumps were pretty big too…lol

@@StartBuildingYourDreams Oh I know. I have a white JTRD very similar to yours. My fenders are painted so if I did that it would have slit off unless the small container has rubber feet.
I really enjoy your videos. I’m located in Gainesville, FL, may move to eastern TN…don’t know. I was ready to start the larger mods…then a bit of life slapped me in the face pushing my plans back a bit. Apprehensive about planning any trips because I’d be pissed being limited by my set up…. Hard to find time so I want to make it count if you know what I mean.

@@dougstdig The Jeep Gladiator in stock form is super capable! Life happens, hang in there and don’t try to “keep up with the Joneses”. There are lots of good dirt roads, and keep a watch on FB Market Place. People are always selling stuff on the cheap. Both my racks and my awning were off of there, but buyer beware... I started with a winch from Harbor Freight doesn’t even have to be the Apex… and had no issues at Ocala in stock form. Most of my drives are Forrest Service Roads or dirt roads. The Rubicon Suspension was great until the RTT, then I started getting a lot of sway on the interstate. Jeeps are meant to enjoy, so take some time and just get out there and enjoy it!

@@StartBuildingYourDreams had to put work down today so I literally just got back from Ocala. Is been a month and a half since I’ve been there. Kinda done with it for a while. The sand is fun driving through, but other than that the only think I get going there are more scratches…🥺
I have the Apex 12K , wireless trail cam, dual ARB / Kraken set up, CB & GMRS and a hard trifold now. The trifold is nice with all the sticky fingers here. I’m okay going ground tent/awning for now since I haven’t made up my mind whether I want to go with a cap or rack. I have plenty of time to decide. I may go with Clayton’s base setup and just add parts as I go. Not sure…we’ll see.

By any chance did you drive up to Carova beach and drive as far as you can heading to Va.? I'm asking because there appears to be some kind of barrier at what must be the VA/NC border. The barrier looks to be long poles stuck into the sand however there is an opening and I was wondering if a car/truck could get through. Any info would be helpful. Unfortunately some dip stick killed a wild horse the other day. It was a hit and run. Poor horse.

Thanks for watching! Sorry to hear about the horse! We made it about a mile from the end. The tides were coming in and we played it safe. Everything I’ve read is it’s blocked off to vehicles. On the Virginia side it’s a wildlife preserve/ sanctuary, and you can’t drive on Virginia Beaches as far as I know. Probably some hefty fines. I read something a about bicycle path, but definitely no driving. It’s 12 miles out and 12 miles back, no stopping unless you have a permit, watch out for the horses, and when the tides come in it can gets really narrow up near the border. Great question! If you find something else out let me know!

@@StartBuildingYourDreams We will be on Carova Sept 2-9. I plan on taking my mountain bike and riding north to see the border and the barrier. I'll report back if you want me to.

@@donnovicki9771 Cool, you’re going to love it. It’s loose sand not like Florida Beaches. So might take some extra pedaling power!
