Love Ocracoke! My family took a vacation there back in the late 70's and I'll never forget it. The quiet and beautiful beaches...the great family businesses and restaurants and the history! I remember eating at one restaurant that offered a plateful of broiled scallops with melted butter...Yum!
I have been here. I was stationed at Ft. Bragg, between 1973-76, and had just bought a Huffy 10 speed. I took a two week leave and pedaled out to Morehead City (I think), then a ferry to the island. Looks like you took the hour-long ferry from Hatteras Island. There are 2 more on that depart/arrive on the south side of the island (in town). One to Cedar Island and One to Swan Quarter. 2.5 hours and both are relaxing. You might even see an incredible sunset if you take the late ferry from Cedar Island. In the last few years they started up the high-speed passenger ferry service. To and from Hatteras Island, Cedar Island and Swan Quarter. I guess you could call a lot of this a 'local' secret.
I know areas don't seem like such a "secret" to the locals. I live in a resort area has the same issue. Ocracoke is still a secret because although its getting busier, it is still quiet and peaceful. Those places are often hard to find and hard to get too.

Also, tourism by those willing to put in the time is appreciated by many locals since its literally feeds their families. Thank You for watching and I appreciate the respectful comment.

Hush. Ocracoke is terrible. No one should ever go there. Nothing to do. People are mean. Beaches ugly. Stay away. Every time I have ever been there, every year since 2000, dreadful experience. Also, he failed to mention Springers Point, the Pony Pens, Smack’Nallys, the charter boats, the Parasailing, Portsmouth, Howard Street, Deepwater Theater, Books to be Red, Flying Melon. Not a secret to you because you've been told but I'd bet many more people than not have no idea Ocracoke exists. I've lived in Delaware my entire life. 5-10 ASL at best. Flooding has been a issue in the past especially when storms come around. I don't think they'll issue building permits there anymore unless you have a plan to raise the structure. Thats hear say but maybe someone can verify???
Some of the most vicious horseflies there that are determined (and successful) to bite you and seem immuned to "Deepwoods off." One of the locals from "Bath" NC arrived with his wife and the bugs were so bad that his wife had him abandon their campsite after arrival, catch the ferry and return to Bath because his wife couldn't stand the bugs.
Born and raised in N.C. love all of our beaches but there's something special about Ocracoke !!just hope it doesn't turn in to what the rest of N.C. is turning into, it makes me sad to see most of the little smaller towns turned into big city's with so many people!!!

Even when it's rough it is reasonbly smooth. It doesn't go fast and the sound class ferries are large. "The Sound Class ferries weigh around 300 tons and can accommodate 50 vehicles and 300 passengers, and all of the ferries that service the Cedar Island / Ocracoke route are of the Sound Class variety."

Thank You, comments like this are my inspiration.
Took my wife last year, it was her first time, she loved it, need to go back, be in coralla in a couple weeks, maybe we'll make another lighthouse run
Love some cool Lighthouses. Thanks for watching and commenting.
Landed at their small airport and really enjoyed the visit. The morning we left , millions of mosquitos waited for my wife and I. Flying home to Florida, we killed over a hundred mosquitos that got into the cockpit while the door was open. Sadly, that’s what I remember most
Mosquitos or not, thats a pretty awesome trip. Thanks for watching and commenting.
I went in 1978, was one stoplight on the whole island.
Still the same. Thanks for watching.
The very fact Blackbeard had his final fight here makes it worth visiting once in your lifetime
I agree. By the way, I have a couple of videos coming up I think you'll really like. Thanks for the support.
Sounds like you are saying Ocracroke.
...
He is!..wtf?!
3:18 thats the best time for the beach TIDAL POOLS !
Good point. Thanks for watching and commenting.
I'll be there this week for 7 nights. It's my happy place.
How did your trip go?
@MikeWilley .. It was great. No rain.
@@MikeWilley .. Thanks for asking. 😁 🍺🍺
I first read about Oracoke after reading Nicholas Sparks the wish it starts off as a remote but later the character falls in love with and I can see how
Theres a book store on the island that has many books written on or about the island.
Great advertising. We need half of New Jersey coming here now.
Actually very few subs from Jersey so you're good.
Excellent I’ve been there
Thanks for watching and commenting Gee
I usually fly my small plane. Beats waiting in line for ferry.
That would be a dream come true. Their airport is perfect for it. Thanks for watching.
Love Ocracoke!
Beautiful place. Thanks for watching.
I scared the Hell outta my family there years ago stranded on Portsmouth all day waiting for storms to blow through. made it back just before sunset lol!! I was like bring it!!!!!
lol, the storms there can get very serious. Thanks for watching Brian.
Well done!
Thank You so much. I appreciate the support.
Been there! Had lunch at Howard’s Pub.
Love Howards Pub. Good staff and food. Thanks for watching.
Awful, every one of them. My wife is dragging me back there on Friday. Maybe I will survive.
Smack'Nalleys is a wonderful spot. I couldn't mention everything in the video, I had to save some for this years visit..... Thanks for commenting Scott
Couldn't believe their restaurant didn't have fresh seafood, frozen shrimp,
@@Tkidddd Take the table on the left end by the fish cleaning station for the charter boats and drink more. They have good food, order the specials, and drink more. It's a bar.
I went there for a week it was amazing ❤
Glad you were able to get the experience. Its an incredible trip. Thanks for watching and commenting.
Wow i live there such a lovely place i live across from pirates chest😂
Pirates Chest is a pretty awesome store. Thanks for watching.
@@MikeWilley yes it isss and i go at the end if summer sale its the best deal!!! Also u get 15% off if u brong in a local so if you know any locals get them to come with u🤫🤫
@@Theiconicyuna What does the local get for coming in with the tourist?
went there a few times last time i went the one grocery store didn’t have any produce that wasn’t rotten or expired
That sucks especially since its like you said, the one store. In my experience they definitely have fruits and veggies that are more ripe than a lot of people may be used to probably because they don't want to throw it away but I've never really witnessed anything moldy and rotten. Thanks for watching and commenting.
@@MikeWilley There was a period of time between the closing of The Community Store and major expansion of the Variety Store. I haven't noticed a shortage of good fruits and veggies in the past few years. We'll be back there on the 10th for 2 more weeks. We can't wait.
Okra-Coke
Thanks Laurie, I definitely struggle with it...lol
We’ve gone to Baldhead for 25 years. Looks like we need try this island out as well.
Baldhead huh....I see how it is. j/k Its a wonderful place.
Looks like what Nantucket use to be like 40 years ago.
Thanks for watching.
Going to Outer Banks here in a couple weeks by car from Pennsylvania, and this is the first video I've seen on the island, and I'm sold.
You'll love it, its amazing. Thanks for watching, have an awesome time. We'll be down there in a couple weeks as well (from Delaware).
Not a secret. But a wonderful place. I love it
Not a secret to you because you've been told but I'd bet many more people than not have no idea Ocracoke exists. I've lived in Delaware my entire life. I've heard of the Outer Banks and even been there several times before my first trip to Ocracoke but I just learned about Ocracoke in the last couple of years. Its a big world out there.
Beautiful 😍 and exactly how high above sea level? 🤔😬 The houses look overly tall...
5-10 ASL at best. Flooding has been a issue in the past especially when storms come around. I don't think they'll issue building permits there anymore unless you have a plan to raise the structure. Thats hear say but maybe someone can verify???
I know 388,000 people know about it now ! Very cool place
Thanks for watching.
Fortunate enough to not had any issues with that the times I've been but I can definitely see how the environment would be susceptible for it.
Born and raised in N.C. love all of our beaches but there's something special about Ocracoke !!just hope it doesn't turn in to what the rest of N.C. is turning into, it makes me sad to see most of the little smaller towns turned into big city's with so many people!!!
It can definitely feel busy at times like during peak season and going to dinner. It still holds on to its charm. Thanks for watching.
Ocracoke is where the restaurant Howard's pub is
Love Howards Pub. Its one of the first places I go every time I go back. Thanks for watching.
I'd totally live there if I had the money
Its a beautiful spot. Thanks for watching.
kooks or books?
Books To Be Red
1978, we were on the ferry and a seagull sailed a greyish poop right in my mom's face - of all the humanity!
I'm sure that was horrifying. No one likes to get pooped on. Thanks for watching.
Hey my cousin is in the video 😂
Seriously? Local or visiting?
I know it because Blackbeard met his end there
Springers Point. I have a video coming up documenting it.
@@MikeWilley I just subscribed to you and will be on the lookout for that video! Thanks.
Nobody knows about it but the line for the ferry is 4 miles long 🤦♂️
The line is crazy. You need to be there in line early. We got on the 2nd ferry on this trip. Good point Jeff. I appreciate you watching and commenting.
@@MikeWilley yea I’ve been there 6 times now. June will be the 7th. Used to always go visit the island but it’s become nothing but a pain anymore. Too crowded. Ferry trips takes half a day.. etc I still love the obx tho
North Captiva Island
Thanks for watching.
It's OCRACOKE, not OCRA-CROAK!damn get it right!!
Gotta love people like this...lol
Here Here! 😁😍 he"s a Yankee...
@@MikeWilley Seriously, though, Mike, was he/she correct? Were you mispronouncing the name, or do they change the "r"s around when they speak the name aloud?
It’s spelled and pronounced with just one R. It’s pronounced Ocra Coke, but it’s just one word.
Right...i mean come on!
Best town ever.
Thanks for watching Lady Jane
Was the ferry a smooth ride? I get seasick, so nervous
Its always been fairly smooth when I've been on it but I've heard stories where it can be pretty bumpy during stormy weather. Thanks for the comment.
You can go there by plane and ferry
A very small plane but they absolutely have a small airport. Now I just need a plane..... Thanks for watching.
