I liked the wire brush effect, you could use it to highlight an area that has been heavily traveled.

Thanx Mel, I never thought to base coat with brown and then go back and brush it. It does give more variety.

Another great tutorial. From here I spread taller flocks in patches using a brush to spread them out. When I am happy I drown them in hair spray then I glue down tiny bushes with scenic glue. When I am finished I seal it down with a heavy coat of flat clear. On pieces that I want to come back to the base for roads and pathways I use extra strength hair spray applying it until the surface is very wet then apply the flock. Then all I need do is use a wet brush to dissolve the hair spray and a dry brush to remove the flock and sealed with flat clear. The only issue people might have is that the colours darken when sprayed with clear. I must give credit to the second method who spilled his water bottle on my gaming board.

Which is the way to go. It would be far easier to learn how to layer your flock and foliage in height on a flat piece first. I have seem too many vids that try to show to whole lot in one video that they end up glossing over so much it becomes a video of watch me build something cool. That's what I like about your style of one technique done really well. On another matter of melting foam. Once it gets to that putty like state it will not conform to a silicon mold. So I will try again later and try pouring it when it is in a more liquid state. Cheers mate and keep them coming.

When I see some terrain videos I think that the end result is not that good. Then there are others why I can't quite work out how the end result was achieved. Your videos though a great to follow, produce a great result and I believe that I can achieve a similar result following your guide.

Loving your tutorials as ever Mel. Looking at this in conjunction with your filler covered gaming board. What would be the best way of covering a 6x4 table? Using flock seems very expensive and im not sure your technique here would work as well.
Lup3rcal you can cover a 6x4 with £12 of flock from Javis scenics mate, yeah, this will work with the filler covered boards mate ;-)

This is one of the best "likes to dislike" ration I've ever seen on a YT video.
As simple as it is brilliant. I actually just started to use flock on terrain so this video was very good timing. Mostly used static gras and tufts before as I thought it would be more realistic (Yeah bad thinking, I got that now^^). I always looked at flock and thought "Oh this looks so monotonous and boring, I'll never use that". Your videos helped my discover my love for flock though as you can truly achieve really really nice looking effects with it :)

TheTerrainTutor Yeah I know that, but I started this hobby ehm...maybe 3 or 4 years ago and I immediatly went for the static gras. I always associated flock with that green granule you sometimes see on very early Warhammer Fantasy or 40k bases so I never really paid attention to it :D

Very useful video, thanks. Why not just use patches of PVA so the ground shows through after flocking, rather than taking off the flock later?

I see a number of people dousing the flock with watered down PVA glue after applying it. You didn’t do that in this video. Is that necessary? I will be using it for Flames of War.
Also, did you use watered down PVA glue here? I have seen you use watered down PVA glue in another one of your videos (the Normandy terrain).

Thanks for your videos Mel, they are awesome! I have a question about flocking that I can't seem to find the answer anywhere: how much scatter would you need to cover a 6x4 gaming board. I'm thinking of getting some 3mm hardboard sheet and just gonna flock the lot. How many javis bags do you think you'd need to cover it in a similar way as done in this video? Cheers mate!

Hello im new to all this, also new to watching your videos, my question is after ive tried several diff ways, what is your thoughts on useing ground leaves as flock? Would acylic paint stick to it? Also i hear the term pva glue all the time is that the same as elmers glue?
Could you do a video naming the company of the flock and grass that you use please?

Comparing this with the lacquor and other products alternative to PVA, wouldn't it be preferable for these techniques that flock comes off easier? Or creating a formula where the flock comes off easier so the dirt patches are easier to "sculpt" if you will? Or is it neccesary that they are absolutely rock solid?
If you have no access to steel brushes, would steel sponges work? I have steel scrubs that I use for other weathering projects and it creates this really nice tearing texture that I got it noted down in my idea journal for using it to simulate things like rust cracks over metal surfaces and the like, especially in a particular direction if it's a bunker under frequent, say, tyranid assault or some other animals that leaves huge clawmarks.
Alderick van Klaveren This is just the basic technique mate, you can thin areas of the pva basecoat with water to aid removal. The highlighting really needs them to be solid but anything abrasive enough scratch the glue will work. hope that helps mate

I know that this is supposed to be about flocking but I have to say that I really liked the contrast between the nice brown and the rocks. Really like the rocks...is there a tutorial for them? If no, I'd be interested in one :-)

Hi...is it possible to combine these techniques with cheap grass mats? I'm just getting into terrain making (moving up from paper terrain!) and grass mats seem like a good beginners shortcut...cheers!

Mel how did you do first layer of PVA? 100 percent PVA? Just school glue?
80/20 pva to water mate, just to help it spread, school grade pva
Hey Mel, what type of brown paint are you using for the base before you PVA it for flocking? I bought some Valspar brand "soil brown" FLAT paint and I brushed it on over black primer and it dried to a very nice rich color like you have. However when I tried to PVA it the glue just doesn't want to stick to it--it's FLAT paint so I'm confused. The PVA has no problem adhering to the flat black spray paint I used before.. but I want brown instead of black for the base so I can brush off grass here and there to make it realistic looking. Could I try mixing in some PVA glue with the brown paint? THat way the PVA glue has other PVA in the brown paint to adhere to? Thanks, Jennifer
Jennifer Gwinn I use dark brown house paint, specifically a £1 tester pot of Java Bean interior emulsion from Wilkinsons. You shouldn't need to mix pva into the paint but it can't harm it :-)
