Best description I ever heard of Yes was, six different musicians all going separate ways in the same direction.

This is one of my all time favorite albums and this is one of the best songs on that album. I think there is a subtle perfection to it.

Guitarist and songwriter Trevor Rabin joined Cinema, a new band formed by yes bassist Chris Squire in 1983. Once vocalist Jon Anderson came aboard there were 4 former members of Yes in the band so they decided to call it Yes. Rabin brought a new sound to Yes. He also sings on this song on some of the verses. Rabin also does movie soundtracks like Con Air and Armageddon.
I loved their songs ''It Can Happen'' and "Love Will Find a Way"

Yes were always reinventing themselves. This is a classic example of how complex yet tuneful they could be.
The creativity in the transitions are incredible, like Rush.
Comparing Rush to Yes is like comparing Justin Beiber to Robert Plant. Get a grip.

Rush said they wouldn't be, if there was not YES. They was influenced by YES, and made their own prog rock.
I saw Yes in concert when they were touring for this album in 1984. They were great.
I also saw the 1984 tour. The song was incredible live!

oI remember in 1983, the first time I heard this song. I bought the album, put it on the turn table, went into the kitchen to cook dinner. My high fidelity magnet drive Techniques turntable was jumping speeds. Damn! Nope, just the first time I heard an awkward time-signature by these prog rock geniuses.
Got to c them live in concert in O-town, Yes was an awesome group n they played this song n the crown went wild. Another big hit from them is Owner Of A Lonely Heart. Ty u should c that one to.
One of the best albums of the early 80's. Still have my vinyl, and the CD.

Heard this song and album when I had my first job, late 70's early 80s. Yup I am old, hey 60's and 70's and 80s is when so much great music came out. I just remember listening to this song with friends at work and thinking how much I loved it and how much the world is changing.

I was in high school when it came out. If you have not already done so, Roundabout is an older song by the same band and it showcases the creativity and talent that they hav every well.

Steve Howe is the beast in the Guitar Ty, That cat is bad ass. Seeing Yes live n seeing Steve go to his solo act on the guitar was sick.
Agree about Steve Howe. But, just so you know, Steve is NOT on this album! The guitarist (and co-lead vocalist) is Trevor Rabin.

Great album. Try "Leave It" with the original music video, it was a big deal on MTV when I was a kid.

I was 8 or 9 yrs old when this was released. Remember the video and listening to the album at a friends house. Takes me back.
Their reformation in the 80's.Trevor Rabin on guitar and vocals with original founding member and vocalist Jon Anderson in the chorus and background for this song. Drummer Alan White wrote and added the rythmic changes to complete Rabin's composition. One of their biggest hits.
Meaning is fairly self explanatory. Change is inevitable, good or bad. Embrace it and move forward
Trevor Rabins contribution to the band was so obvious. This album was a little different for Yes and man was it good.

The instrumental "Cinema" from this album won a Grammy (the band's only one) in 1985 for Best Rock Instrumental Performance. I believe it's one take with the whole band.
By far the best album of the 80's in my opinion. Not even close.

Chris Squire was a one that could lay down a frequency and vibration that others could build on and that's all he and I wanted out of it. I love British rock.

Thanks for another great reaction. Been a Yes fan since the 70s. I first bought this album in 1983 when I was 18 and stationed in South Korea, fell in love with it immediately.
I first saw Yes live on their Close to the Edge tour in 1973, and most recently in 2016 Jon Anderson, Rick Wakeman, and Trevor Rabin of Yes. Jon Anderson is in his 70s now, and still hit those high notes perfectly!!! I highly recommend "Roundabout", "Owner of a Lonely Heart", "Final Eyes", and "Hold On". I could actually recommend their entire music catalog, but those 4 are good to start with.
Killer song. First heard it in 1983 when I bought the album 90125. Classic album and rebirth for the band. Owner, leave it, city of love. Should have made another like it.
This is one of my all time favorite albums. It takes me back to my early adulthood.

I really like this song! Yes, to me is an underappreciated band. They were all really great musicians but their music just wasn't me screaming at that time.
I heard this when I first started dating a really nice guy. I wish we would've stayed together but it wasn't meant to be.💔

I can't pick a favourite song from this masterpiece LP but as so many people have already said, this is what it sounds like when a single addition, in this case guitarist Trevor Rabin, can bring to a band. He is also the one singing the verses.

I love all the change ups and transitions in this song. Especially when it kicks in - no pun intended. Your face at 2:10 👍 it’s kind of a haunting song - I love “”keep looking for changes” when he says it fast.

My Favorite Band... especially the 70s and 80s
This was a pretty dramatic "change" in the bands direction, the age of MTV and needing a hit single, no more 50 minute songs. Under the leadership of Traver Rabin sp? they reached new commercial heights. This was a huge album, probably their best selling ever, it was a harder more straightforward direction, I think it holds up very well all these years later.
If you like Changes, then you need to listen to "Owner of a lonely heart" and it will help you understand the context of the 80's YES music. The writer of the majority of this album was Trevor Rabin from Capetown, S Africa & he gave the 60's era YES a new face for the 1980's. Brilliant! Peace!

This song reminds me of a schoolboy friend who passed away a few years ago, he was a big fan of Yes and I first heard this in his house many years ago now. We were great mates growing up together in the UK and he was one of the reasons that my musical tastes are as they are thirty years on. We spent many hours listening to various Rock bands , miss him a lot, taken away far too soon , top bloke , we used to laugh so much growing up as our sense of humour was very similar, he also was responsible for my love of the Rock band Rush among many others. Sometimes I feel old but when I hear tracks like this again then I feel like a teenager again, until I look in the mirror that is .

I bought this and Van Halens' women and Children first at the same time in 1981, I believe, first I ever bought, would listen in bed at night til mom yelled at me for playing it too loud. I'd wake up with the needle on the turntable hopping up and down on the center of the album where there were no music lines.

First time I heard changes was probably 1984 or 1985...This was Yes' big comeback album after being out of the scene for a few years.

Yes - Roundabout
You should go again to their first commercially successful album, "The Yes Album." You've already reacted to "I've Seen All Good People" but..... My personal favorite track is "Starship Trooper," which is very loosely based on Robert Heinleins novel of the same name. (The 1997 film "Starship Troopers"was also loosely based on the novel.) In high school I used to put on headphones and listen to side 1, which ended with "Starship Trooper," when I went to sleep.
This album is very uplifting. It does have a theme and for the most part I think it's about how people need each other and to rise above all the mess and embrace your humanity. At least that's what I got from it.
Its about watching your lover...there are MANY things and forces in this world which can alter your lover...money...drugs..religion..family...politics..etc!

Anyone who likes this sort of stuff should check out King Crimson's "Three of a Perfect Pair". It's also music that is very complex but manages to be so swinging and rock so hard at the same time in the best tunes. They don't allow their studio stuff on UA-cam, but here's a live performance from Japan, and they are so good that you don't really lose a lot from the live performance, which is particularly impressive when it's this complex. The first song on this set is the title track, which is arguably the best one on the album, though some others are amazing as well.

If you like change of rhythm songs, you should absolutely listen to Jethro Tull Aqualung. I'd recommend also Tull's Thick as a Brick.

Can't speak for Stirling (sp?), but this is a song I have used more than once to introduce people to the band "Yes". It was written / released in 1983 - just as New Wave was becoming a big thing. It followed the breakup of Yes, and this reformed version included South African guitar wizard Trevor Rabin. The song (and the whole album) took Yes in a much more pop direction than their earlier classically-influenced progressive rock sound - a direction which had clearly started with their previous album "Drama" (which did not have Rabin, but did have Geoff Downes and Trevor Horn of the Buggles - Trevor Horn also produced this album).
This song in particular has the odd-time intro (which looks back at their earlier prog), but then blends into the much more accessible main body with vocals, and finishes with a reprise of the intro.
Musically, the intro is an ever-changing cycle of the beat - with a buildup of the tension later presented in the lyrics (which are about a difficult romantic breakup), which resolves into the resignation of the main body. In this way, the instruments reflect the lyrics, and vice versa!

@Sterling Ross - I'm not sure I can pick a standout from 90125 - The only song I think is slightly weaker is "Owner of a Lonely Heart" - and that really just reflects the fact that it is notably the most "pop" and least "prog" :-)
