Waiting before buying is my rule for everything. Clothes, household items, makeup etc. I find 90% of the time the initial 'want' of that item wears off. I dont care if its on sale or limited edition. I still hold off. Its really surprising how much you realize you dont end up buying!
honestly the best thing that kept me from buying makeup is to stop watching beauty youtubers. It makes me sad because I really love some of the people I’m subscribed to but it just makes me wanna buy more! The second best thing for me was going cruelty free. I think much more about the brands I’m buying from and what I’m buying and it keeps me from just buying stuff because it’s on sale or limited edition
Another thing that can help is to make a list of things you want to save up for such as a new camera, a vacation, a concert or music festival. Any time you want to buy new makeup, look at that list and remind yourself that you’d rather put the money towards something else!
I started a no buy after I started my project pan because I quickly realized that it takes a while to use powder products up. To anyone that wants to start a low/no buy give yourself a month and try to hit pan in every shade of one eye shadow pallet. You won’t want to buy another pallet for a while!
I’m a week in my first project pan (and the pans aren’t even deep) but I don’t see me hitting any pan for a few months.... and I have a lot..... a lot of palettes 🙈
I decided to go on a low buy for 2019 after I got a Sephora gift card and there was literally nothing I could come up with that I truly wanted. One thing that helped me with slowing on my purchase was watching all the "I followed a tutorial by so-and-so". I was actually kind of mad at those. I heard "they are using 'x', I don't have that, but I have this"... And it got me thinking, if big UA-camrs who get a ton of makeup for free and do videos for a job won't buy stuff to deliberately follow a tutorial (like they are specifically following a tutorial and dupe out the products) how dumb am I as a consumer to think I need to buy something to follow theirs. Realizing that cut my spending in half immediately. Plus it was really disappointing. You're intentionally do following a tutorial, for a video, use the same products. Maybe I'm alone in this, but it really opened my eyes to my spending.
I totally overbought in 2018, especially eyeshadow palettes, so I'm on a no-buy for eyeshadow and a low-buy for everything else for 2019. Way past time to stop accumulating and start enjoying! I am definitely going to try your tips!

Ros with 1 s I sell them on mercari and keep only my Pat McGrath palettes( the 3 big originals, bronze seduction, bronze ambition, dark star) Natasha palettes( green-brown, gold, safari, sunset, Lila, joya,aeris, cranberry), subculture, Charlotte Tilbury Star I’m your eyes, Kevyn Aucoin nude pop, naked heat. But I get rid of everything else that I wasn’t reaching for.
@Ros with 1 s I had a low-buy year during 2018 where I limited myself to about 22 dollars a month on makeup. For some, that's insanely cheap, but I didn't have the economy to buy more than that so I stuck with it. I also allowed myself to roll-over 11 dollars into the next month if I didn't buy anything so that I could "save up" if I wanted something more expensive (ex. if I wanted a palette that cost 40 dollars in January, I would be able to buy it in Mars if I didn't buy anything else before). I also made a makeup inventory where I wrote down every single product I had (including each individual shadow in palettes). I swatched them all and noted the color and formula so I could easily find how many of one color I own. I had over 20 blue eyeshadows and only one of them was matte! Oh, and I wear blue about once every third year. This really worked for me. I decluttered and used up a bunch of my makeup and now it's down to two thirds of how it was at the beginning of the year. I got rid of over 150 products including 5 palettes which I think is amazing. It was really hard some days when I was itching for something new and I even went so far I put the product in my cart before finally backing down. When that happened I went back to my own collection and put my makeup in a random number generator and then I stuck with whatever product I got for a week. I was expecting to splurge during christmas (like last year), but I didn't. I managed to buy only a handful of things and I don't have the need to buy anything more. I'm gonna keep doing my low buy through 2019 as well. Good luck :D
I dont do low or no buys but my tip for not buying all eyeshadow palettes is look at every shadow and ask myself "Do i have something that looks like this in my collection?" and if the answer is no "How much will i use this shade?". Tuns out most of the time i dont need the palette and somtimes i can just buy one or two single shadows to get the shades that i want.
I am just doing a low buy so I can use my vast amount of Makeup I already have. But I will buy what enhances my collection from now on. I don't want it to go back to the old days were there hardly any unique brands so I will support the brands that I enjoy.
YES TO ALL OF THESE!!!! Something I did to kinda kick start my low-buy is that I created word documents and listed all my palettes, then all my cheek products (including those in palettes), then all my lip products. I have 38 palettes, 40 cheek products, and exactly 60 lip products. Granted, a lot of my lip products are unopened in my back up storage and I'm only using 14 of them. But having a visual of how much product I do have on me was a big help. I told my family this year to NOT buy me any makeup this holiday season and I'm so glad they listened. Currently I'm playing a lot with palette combos and it's putting me in a good place for this upcoming year
I suck at project panning even though I went on a low buy following a list of products that I was allowed to purchase. Now I've decided a no buy year. We are humans, we have one face. It's sad but true 😂
'Project pan's and 'shop my stash'es always make me laugh.... because with the exception of lip products/colors and three highlighters, I only have one of everything... my life is a shop my stash.
I probably spent less than $200 this year on skincare and make up combined so not doing this from a beauty side more just doing a no buy because I'm tired of me impulsively buying cheaper things, junk food, alcohol out when we have a fully stocked bar because at the end of the day it's a waste and I'd rather buy something more expensive that's an item that makes more of an impact. My rules will be no buying - Alcohol. Shoes. Any clothes unless it's for work or it's replacing a worn out must have staple item. Make up. Junk food at work when I already packed lunch. Any kitchen item. I have way too much kitchen items... I can buy experiences, go out to eat (no drinks), travel and 3 items I have on my list which is 1 louis Vuitton purse, a yellow gold and white gold reversible omega necklace in 14k solid gold and a pair of nude Louboutin pumps.

Great tips and I have really been evaluating my purchasing habits and current (large!) inventory of makeup-i am going to do a low buy and only purchase products I have used up and enjoyed thoroughly. I plan on a low-buy since I'm getting back into makeup (very slowly lol) and want to use up what I have as well as get new products. What I've settled on is buying myself one product a month within a set budget (excluding necessary products such as primer/foundation/mascara which will be as needed UNLESS I choose to get a high-end one) !
I'm on a low buy and I though exactly the same, put the things that I want on a list (which I already do) but now don't wait 2 weeks but a month or two, if I really want it, it can wait

Different name for my " no buy " is CREDIT CARD DEBT. I had to work very hard on 2018 to get rid of the sequels of my makeup obsession or more correctly called IMPULSIVE BUYING. Lesson learned YOU DONT HAVE TO HAVE IT ALL, you are not going to die if you don't buy it!!!!
Words of wisdom! This is one of the best videos I have seen on this subject! I'm actually already doing what you suggested in my low buying months and I discovered that this way I'm loving and enjoying my makeup collection more than ever! I think that we should contribute to spread the message behind your video, that's why I'm giving it thumbs up.
Bad unless you really do use the back ups up instead of moving on to other new things in the meantime. I have a favorite brow pencil and lip pencil, I just buy back ups of those and it stops me from buying other products in those categories. However if you get backups of products that take years to finish like palettes or blushes when accumulating other stuff in those categories it is not a good practice.
After a LOT of new/impulse purchases in the last few months… and the Sephora sale…. I’m going to put myself on a no/low buy for some undetermined amount of time. I’m so happy with the purchasss I’ve made, but now I just have so much product and only one face! I can always count on you for some great tips to help me get started.
That's such a good video! I'm on a year long low buy since December 1st, 2018 and the hardest part for now has been not to walk through the makeup aisle when I do my grocery shopping.

I’m not great at low buys because I do give into temptation, but this past year I bought soo much eyeshadow. My goal is to do a low buy / no buy on eyeshadow palettes since that’s typically what i order and buy most and rarely ever buy makeup besides that. I’m loving the tips you gave! Thank you for coming out with this video! I bought SO MUCH makeup and skin care in 2018. Out of all of the years I’ve been a Sephora insider and an ultamate member, I’ve NEVER been platinum or VIB. That’s how little makeup/skincare I buy, but this year I just went crazy and became platinum and VIB. I’m planning on going on a low/no buy in 2019, not just with makeup but with clothes and everything else too. I just want to spend my money wisely and want to have less things 😂
Thanks Kelly! Very useful advice. Hope I can stay strong for my low buy in 2019. I really like the tip on waiting on something for a month before jumping in to make the purchase. I find that I end up passing on many products by curbing the impulse to buy something right when it launches. I actually managed to do that for six months with the Urban Decay Born to Run, decided not to buy it and then received it as a birthday present a few days ago. Not buying something right away when it launches also leaves open the possibility for friends and family to buy them as a gift during birthdays/Christmases etc. and I'm even more appreciative of the things I receive as gifts. xo
These are all excellent tips Kelly. I started an everyday makeup bag. I put the oldest products that I can go thru more quickly, like primers & concealers in it so they don't expire & don't change those until they're gone. Then I choose a few palettes, blushes, powders, etc. & use them until I feel I want something else or until it's time to change them with palettes for the next season. It's kind of like a shop my stash, but I just don't do it every week or 2. I'm buying much less this way. Another benefit, is I can see when I'm getting low on primer or concealer and get just those. Then if something new comes out that I just really, really want, I can get it without feeling bad about it or over spending on things. Thanks for the vid and have an awesome day!

These are great tips. I practically have an ULTA store in my house! I started a project plan in 2018 and it is so rewarding to actually finish a product. I have SO many palettes that I've never touched yet but I "NEED" the latest and greatest. Challenge accepted!
Great tips! I was on a low buy for 2018 and started to love my collection much more and realized I have something similar to literally everything that’s been released. I am going to try a no-buy for the first half of 2019. Only rule being if I run out of a product, eyebrow product for example, and I have no others left in my collection, I’ll give myself a pass to purchase a new one.

Awesome tips, Kelly! Minimizing the temptation by not paying as much attention to new releases would probably be majorly helpful. I think if I truly wanted to no-buy I’d have to disappear from the beauty community for a while and just focus on what I owned!
I've got 5 palettes and i feel sooo overwhelmed omg. Just successfully finished 105 products beauty and make up! 1 year of projet pan to get a minimalistic collection. It's enough.

I way over bought the last couple of years. Now everything that comes out I remember something else I have that is similar. Sometimes I don't think about it. Your dupes idea is brilliant! I'm going to make a conscience effort to dupe anything that catches my attention. On the rare occasion something is unique then I'll think about purchasing. Great idea!!!

I am also forcing a low buy for 2019! The only thing I ever panned or hit pan on was my PF Butter Bronzers! I use them on my eyes daily for a transition shade as well as my main bronzer. Ya know I grabbed the Amrezy highlighter on first launch and said “I will be half way to pan by end of 2018!” I was sooooo wrong. Not even a good dent! You are right Kelly... it’s time to project pan. I am allowing myself a brand purchase at anytime which is Juvia’s place. I am gonna try as you suggested to wait a month. I made myself goals, that i couldn't buy another products in that category until I hit pan on this. I also shop my stash weekly, In 2019 im doing a project pan, pan that palette and a low buy. I finally hit pan on my tarte paarty blush, from my Oct 2017 birthday gift.

I am on a no buy year. Really a low buy. I am trying hard to cut back on impulse purchases. It covers makeup, skincare and clothing, accessories and shoes. I need a real lifestyle change to curb my impulse buying.
Project pan definitely helps me with no/low buy. Been using the same highlighter for eight month, and it’s just a sample size... at some point you start to realize how long your current collect will last you.

What makes me hold off is KNOWING it will go on sale later. I can't tell you how many times I've bought something then a few weeks or months later it's cheaper UGH! Then by the time it goes on sale the hype goes down and I really get to think over whether I really liked it or not (which more than half the time I dont). And if I do, then still want it, I save $$. Its a win-win
I have been through a couple of years of what feels like relentless buying of eyeshadow palettes. I like a new palette then find myself buying a lot of the brand back catalogue. I keep having to buy new storage for it and once it's in the storage it stays there while I'm trying things that didn't make it into the storage. Project Pan would mean not using the possibly 100s of palettes in my storage. Shop my Stash sounds great along with unsubscribing from UA-cam channels and unfollowing them on Instagram and Facebook. My social media bombards me with new palettes all the time. I am currently starting to buy Pat McGrath Mothership back catalogue. When my system is to try every colour before putting the palette in the attic, this is a scarily expensive hobby.
Im going to try a low buy next year. Like I have 5 eyeshadow palletes, 4 of which are all different shades of matte nude browns - the only unique thing there is my naked cherry palette. I just keep buying eyeshadow thats so samey and unneccesary, so i need to try and use them before they go off 🙈
Good job! I have 2 eyeshadow pallets & I’m over them. Sure, I use 10% of what is in there but I’m not using all of them. I am able to compare the quality of 2 companies using these 2 as well. One is a Bobby Brown that is basic browns and bone with 3 gel liners. The other is “Too Faced Natural Matte” which smells like coconut and is pinks with browns. I’ll never use it all. Plus, there are the samples that companies like Estée Lauder gives away. I have a million from “gift” time. Those are the only pallets I have and I feel like I’m drowning in makeup.
Your dog snoring is so cute but makes me sad :( my dog Penelope used to snore loud just like that and she suddenly passed away in February. Whenever I hear your puppy snoring I look around my room because I think she’s back home. Anyways, great video ❤️

I swear I buy something every time I work and I don’t have a single paycheck saved since I started working there!! I’m really going to try though. 'Project pan's and 'shop my stash'es always make me laugh.... because with the exception of lip products/colors and three highlighters, I only have one of everything... my life is a shop my stash.
I probably spent less than $200 this year on skincare and make up combined so not doing this from a beauty side more just doing a no buy because I'm tired of me impulsively buying cheaper things, junk food, alcohol out when we have a fully stocked bar because at the end of the day it's a waste and I'd rather buy something more expensive that's an item that makes more of an impact.
My rules will be no buying -
Alcohol.
Shoes.
Any clothes unless it's for work or it's replacing a worn out must have staple item.
Make up.
Junk food at work when I already packed lunch.
Any kitchen item. I have way too much kitchen items...
I can buy experiences, go out to eat (no drinks), travel and 3 items I have on my list which is 1 louis Vuitton purse, a yellow gold and white gold reversible omega necklace in 14k solid gold and a pair of nude Louboutin pumps.
Never comment but I am inspired to do this! Great tips and I have really been evaluating my purchasing habits and current (large!) inventory of makeup-i am going to do a low buy and only purchase products I have used up and enjoyed thoroughly. Going to intentionally curate my collection from now on. Thank you!

I plan on a low-buy since I'm getting back into makeup (very slowly lol) and want to use up what I have as well as get new products. What I've settled on is buying myself one product a month within a set budget (excluding necessary products such as primer/foundation/mascara which will be as needed UNLESS I choose to get a high-end one) !

Different name for my " no buy " is CREDIT CARD DEBT. I had to work very hard on 2018 to get rid of the sequels of my makeup obsession or more correctly called IMPULSIVE BUYING. Lesson learned YOU DONT HAVE TO HAVE IT ALL, you are not going to die if you don't buy it!!!!

I'm actually already doing what you suggested in my low buying months and I discovered that this way I'm loving and enjoying my makeup collection more than ever! My trigger word is "limited edition"😬.And wen I like a product a lot I buy back ups. I don't know if it's good or bad.

Bad unless you really do use the back ups up instead of moving on to other new things in the meantime.
I have a favorite brow pencil and lip pencil, I just buy back ups of those and it stops me from buying other products in those categories. However if you get backups of products that take years to finish like palettes or blushes when accumulating other stuff in those categories it is not a good practice.
After a LOT of new/impulse purchases in the last few months… and the Sephora sale…. I’m going to put myself on a no/low buy for some undetermined amount of time. I’m so happy with the purchasss I’ve made, but now I just have so much product and only one face! I can always count on you for some great tips to help me get started.
That's such a good video! I'm on a year long low buy since December 1st, 2018 and the hardest part for now has been not to walk through the makeup aisle when I do my grocery shopping.

I’m not great at low buys because I do give into temptation, but this past year I bought soo much eyeshadow. My goal is to do a low buy / no buy on eyeshadow palettes since that’s typically what i order and buy most and rarely ever buy makeup besides that. I’m loving the tips you gave! Thank you for coming out with this video! I bought SO MUCH makeup and skin care in 2018. Out of all of the years I’ve been a Sephora insider and an ultamate member, I’ve NEVER been platinum or VIB. That’s how little makeup/skincare I buy, but this year I just went crazy and became platinum and VIB. I’m planning on going on a low/no buy in 2019, not just with makeup but with clothes and everything else too. I just want to spend my money wisely and want to have less things 😂
Thanks Kelly! Very useful advice. Hope I can stay strong for my low buy in 2019. I really like the tip on waiting on something for a month before jumping in to make the purchase. I find that I end up passing on many products by curbing the impulse to buy something right when it launches. I actually managed to do that for six months with the Urban Decay Born to Run, decided not to buy it and then received it as a birthday present a few days ago. Not buying something right away when it launches also leaves open the possibility for friends and family to buy them as a gift during birthdays/Christmases etc. and I'm even more appreciative of the things I receive as gifts. xo

These are all excellent tips Kelly. I started an everyday makeup bag. I put the oldest products that I can go thru more quickly, like primers & concealers in it so they don't expire & don't change those until they're gone. Then I choose a few palettes, blushes, powders, etc. & use them until I feel I want something else or until it's time to change them with palettes for the next season. It's kind of like a shop my stash, but I just don't do it every week or 2. I'm buying much less this way. Another benefit, is I can see when I'm getting low on primer or concealer and get just those. Then if something new comes out that I just really, really want, I can get it without feeling bad about it or over spending on things. Thanks for the vid and have an awesome day!

These are great tips. I practically have an ULTA store in my house! I started a project plan in 2018 and it is so rewarding to actually finish a product. I have SO many palettes that I've never touched yet but I "NEED" the latest and greatest.

Great tips! I was on a low buy for 2018 and started to love my collection much more and realized I have something similar to literally everything that’s been released. I am going to try a no-buy for the first half of 2019. Only rule being if I run out of a product, eyebrow product for example, and I have no others left in my collection, I’ll give myself a pass to purchase a new one.

Awesome tips, Kelly! Minimizing the temptation by not paying as much attention to new releases would probably be majorly helpful. I think if I truly wanted to no-buy I’d have to disappear from the beauty community for a while and just focus on what I owned!
I live in India so thr main site for makeup is Nykaa which is sort of like our version of Ulta and I just switched off the notification for that.
I've got 5 palettes and i feel sooo overwhelmed omg. Just successfully finished 105 products beauty and make up! 1 year of projet pan to get a minimalistic collection. It's enough.

I really loved the “wait a month” tip!! im going on a low-buy for makeup and trying to just replace things when I use them up like mascara and concealer.
hopefully, I can finish a few makeup palettes and highlighters/items so I can start incorporating more color and vibrant looks by the time summer comes around. also I feel like this will be a great way to encourage me to wear makeup more often and improve my skills!

I way over bought the last couple of years. Now everything that comes out I remember something else I have that is similar. Sometimes I don't think about it. Your dupes idea is brilliant! I'm going to make a conscience effort to dupe anything that catches my attention. On the rare occasion something is unique then I'll think about purchasing. Great idea!!!

I'm doing a 6 month no buy challenge and so far I'm doing well lol. I've been watching makeup videos from last year to see what was trending last January and since Spring colors are pretty much the same every year I'm using similar colors I have already on my face now.

Unsubscribing from store emails has been HUGE for me! Out of sight, out of mind. Also, my VIB and ulta platinum didn’t renew this year because I didn’t spend enough money and I honestly saw that as an accomplishment!

I am also forcing a low buy for 2019! The only thing I ever panned or hit pan on was my PF Butter Bronzers! I use them on my eyes daily for a transition shade as well as my main bronzer.
Ya know I grabbed the Amrezy highlighter on first launch and said “I will be half way to pan by end of 2018!” I was sooooo wrong. Not even a good dent!

Trying to do a no-buy. And that includes bags, clothes, makeup, everything. Might have to give in to buying a dress and a peach colored eye shadow single but that's all - I didn't even ask for anything else than a sports watch for Christmas because I don't need anything. Trying to do a Project Pan also! Excited... =)
I made myself goals, that i couldn't buy another products in that category until I hit pan on this. I also shop my stash weekly, In 2019 im doing a project pan, pan that palette and a low buy. I finally hit pan on my tarte paarty blush, from my Oct 2017 birthday gift.
Definitely going on a low buy this year. It all escalated in 2018, especially my addiction to eyeshadow palettes. I realized how many things I declutter because I just don’t use it.

I am on a no buy year. Really a low buy. I am trying hard to cut back on impulse purchases. It covers makeup, skincare and clothing, accessories and shoes. I need a real lifestyle change to curb my impulse buying.
Project pan definitely helps me with no/low buy. Been using the same highlighter for eight month, and it’s just a sample size... at some point you start to realize how long your current collect will last you.

What makes me hold off is KNOWING it will go on sale later. I can't tell you how many times I've bought something then a few weeks or months later it's cheaper UGH!
Then by the time it goes on sale the hype goes down and I really get to think over whether I really liked it or not (which more than half the time I dont). And if I do, then still want it, I save $$. Its a win-win
I have been through a couple of years of what feels like relentless buying of eyeshadow palettes. I like a new palette then find myself buying a lot of the brand back catalogue. I keep having to buy new storage for it and once it's in the storage it stays there while I'm trying things that didn't make it into the storage. Project Pan would mean not using the possibly 100s of palettes in my storage. Shop my Stash sounds great along with unsubscribing from UA-cam channels and unfollowing them on Instagram and Facebook. My social media bombards me with new palettes all the time. I am currently starting to buy Pat McGrath Mothership back catalogue. When my system is to try every colour before putting the palette in the attic, this is a scarily expensive hobby.

Im going to try a low buy next year. Like I have 5 eyeshadow palletes, 4 of which are all different shades of matte nude browns - the only unique thing there is my naked cherry palette. I just keep buying eyeshadow thats so samey and unneccesary, so i need to try and use them before they go off 🙈
Good job! I have 2 eyeshadow pallets & I’m over them. Sure, I use 10% of what is in there but I’m not using all of them. I am able to compare the quality of 2 companies using these 2 as well. One is a Bobby Brown that is basic browns and bone with 3 gel liners. The other is “Too Faced Natural Matte” which smells like coconut and is pinks with browns. I’ll never use it all. Plus, there are the samples that companies like Estée Lauder gives away. I have a million from “gift” time. Those are the only pallets I have and I feel like I’m drowning in makeup.
Your dog snoring is so cute but makes me sad :( my dog Penelope used to snore loud just like that and she suddenly passed away in February. Whenever I hear your puppy snoring I look around my room because I think she’s back home. Anyways, great video ❤️

I’m wanting to do a no buy in 2019 but it’s going to be so hard because I work at Ulta. I swear I buy something every time I work and I don’t have a single paycheck saved since I started working there!! I’m really going to try though. I have so much makeup that I could go on a no buy for the rest of my life and still not use up all that I have. It’s so wasteful and I feel disappointed in myself but I can’t wait to start my no buy.
