    I must say that that engine runs really well considering it's history. Funny how even with all that sludge, the bottom of the screen looked like new. It shows the bi-level screen actually keeps the oil pump from recirculating the sludge. It did its job. Thank you for not using any goop on the gaskets. The right way to do it. 😀👍 The gasket doesn't need any help, just makes taking them back off and cleaning up the surface a hassle.

      Yeah the oil was surprisingly clean!

    • @rupe53
      @rupe53 5 років тому +1

      @@VWLifeVW… The oil system in the engine works just like an oil bath air cleaner. Each time you shut the engine off all the crap settles to the bottom and the screen pulls it's supply from a half inch higher.

    Hey CT that was pretty nice oil that came out. All things considered. If I may make a suggestion? A magnetic drain plug would be nice. And a full synthetic oil too. My fav being Castrol Edge. 10w-40. But you know best. Btw that red light on your speedo is for charging. The generators never go but sometimes need polarizing and/or brushes. The voltage regulator may need the points filed too. I noticed you didn’t use one to clean the ignition points. NAPA has point files. Oh and Harbor Freight has a nice parts washer. Don’t you just love how all of us commenters spend your money? 😂

    I had 1972 1600 cc Camper van. It carried four adults and two racing motorcycles plus full camping gear from circuit to circuit for three years . It was mostly absolutely flat out full throttle, circa 80 mph, for several hours at a time. In 85,000 miles apart from basic servicing it used one set of tyres and two exhaust systems, never ever let us down.that was when they built good engines etc. Brakes were a bit “iffy” though, pre servo model !.

    Marvel's main ingredient is the distillate: paraffin.....>>>Diesel....has a greater percentage and like the prescription I told you about before....you'll get more quantity overall for "hot cleaning"...if you just do the 50/50 or 70/30 mix. Diesel is cheaper than the bottle mixture too.

      Why? If the oil is old but okay, then there is zero reason to waste new oil if you dont know the condition of the engine. Even if you did, you still might dump marvel in the bores, or some kind of penetrant which would contaminate the new oil. Thats not even taking the foolishness of dumping new oil into a sludgy engine into consideration. Unless you're rich, dumb or bored, do what he did. Live and learn! 😁

      @@RabidDogEOCF No way, big time wrong!!! Oil is cheap, an engine is not. Not only should the oil be changed before cranking, but it's also smart to remove the pan on any engine that you are unfamiliar with, just to see what may be in there. $15 dollars worth of oil is a small price to pay to potentially save an engine!

    A little warning from Germany. I grew up with this cars. One thing you should never ever do is overfill those VW engines with oil. It will blow up the engine. Especially the oil cooler and that gaskets there. And it is frigging complicated to get that tight again.

  • @JakeKennes

    From what I saw you scooping out of the bottom of the crankcase, I would strongly advise to flush the engine once more before filling with fresh oil. Get a cheap engine oil, this engine requires 2,5 liters of oil if I recall well, so pour in about 2/3 or 1,5 liters of oil the crankcase and 1/3 or 1 liter of diesel or petroleum/kerosene and run the engine for 10-15 minutes, at idle only; then drain again and now you are ready to fill with clean oil...
