Across the US, black people are dying from Covid-19 at disproportionately high rates. While there are many different factors at play behind the stark racial disparities - there’s one possible reason that’s been lurking in the air for decades: pollution.
The long history of segregation and housing discrimination has long put black people at greater risk of living near chemical plants, factories and highways, exposing them to higher levels of air pollutants. These pollutants have had a chronically negative impact on health, leading to conditions like hypertension and asthma. Now, those same diseases are associated with severe cases of Covid-19, and showing that where you live can determine whether you survive from Covid-19.

When people say 'don't politicise Covid-19' - it was politicised and racialised before it even begun.
Ben O'Donovan-Iland why people would even say that ? A pandemic is a political matter no matter what, because the state has to choose between the population welfare and the economy.
@@thomasclerc5690 State governors have to chose between people's health or the economy. If people want to work they can always get a essential worker.
I wonder though how big a contributor this is as we've the same disproportionate effect on black people in the UK where comunities aren't segregatred quite as much as the US...
How was it racialised before it began?

I've lived in cancer alley (St. Charles Parish) for the past 15 years, and I can say that I do smell weird smells in the air sometimes. No one in my area is talking about it though. We have low coronavirus cases thankfully, though. If anyone is going to say this is because of a lack of testing, thankfully, our parish has been very ahead of the game with COVID. We have had testing sites where anyone can get tested since almost the beginning of the pandemic. You just show up and they test you. I was tested and was very impressed with my parish.
Good for you!
That's smart.

According to the CDC ", less than 6% of all covid related deaths had ONLY covid. The other 94% had an average of 4.0 additional conditions or CAUSES per death." Now, based on that CDC statement and the known statistics of cases vs deaths, a little high school math shows that those with ONLY covid have a 99.89% survival rate, and those with an average of 4.0 other serious health conditions STILL have a 98.31% survival rate.
Yep, keep preaching

A known youtuber Bashurverse was young and seemingly had a decent immune system and didn't have any known pre-existing condition and yet he still passed away, is it still only a 99.99999% chance for those serious health condition that you guys keep touting stats with? where did you even get these CDC statistics anyway? if you even did find real statistics.
@@SuperJackman117 Sometimes youtube blocks comments with links so simply google "Weekly Updates by Select Demographic and Geographic Characteristics" and the CDC page will be the first link on google. When you go to the CDC page, scroll down to Topic 4 and read the statement by the CDC.

facts, and people still wear the blinders with pride
@@sssssnake222 the sad thing is the left encourages illegal immigrants, who come here and live off tax money for years, to have babies yet instead of helping and uplifting a black woman they tell them "nah, go ahead and abort. You're oppressed, you can't take care of it". Imagine what the population would be if the left ACTUALLY cared about black people and helped the way they act like they do..
It's not just the air, it's also the water people drink and the dirt little kids play in. Air pollution eventually falls with the rain into the earth and open water.
Christa L this can also include livestock and food if they are in surrounding areas. This also affects the ecosystems in the area, and any potential water sources. Underground sources as well. It’s just all around horrible. These plants also release tons of chemicals into the air, which in turn create holes in the ozone. This can cause skin cancer, global warming/climate change, and many other problems. This is so problematic for poorer communities because they are often hit the hardest, or can’t easily fix a problem with the resources at hand.
Scary!
Honestly, I give up on counting on much of the politicians to make much change about pollution in a lot of places around the world. I say it’s best to focus what we can do ourselves besides just voting for what we think best and encouraging others by sharing our insights. I managed to easily find articles like “How to Help the Environment,” “Things You Can Recycle,” “How to Save Water,” “How to Start Your Own Garden,” and so on easily online. I doubt it’d make as much of a difference if someone in a greater amount of power around this does something, but I think it’ll do much more than expecting a miracle can happen that all the effort is placed into convincing politicians to change.
There are areas in Phoenix you NEVER let your kids play in the dirt! Most actually.

Racial inequality simply reflects the absence of social mobility. Born poor stays poor. What else would you expect from a country where education costs a fortune. And then these people have no access to healthcare (prevention, MRI, CT) - so we get what we get. Air pollution is only a small part of the story.

This is a geography issue not a race issue. Of course the leadership isn’t going to do anything about it because the citizens don’t have any real power or resources this is about poor vs rich.
Nala Jax this is so silly. Geography, but the US has forced black people into the harshest environments in the nation. Poor vs rich, but the US has done everything in its power to make sure black people are poorer. Those things are tools for systemic racism. Of course this is a race issue.
T. Madeleine Thomas I am not denying that there is systemic racism BUT THIS VIDEO shows geographical issues not racism. There are many poor black people that don’t live in “harsh environments” just because you’re black and poor that doesn’t mean that you automatically have to live somewhere that is heavily polluted. No ones putting a gun to poor black peoples heads and saying “GO LIVE NEXT TO THIS FACTORY” that’s not happening.
Lei P it’s about the equality of opportunity my dude. Sure some black people are rich and some white people are poor. You’re not wrong lol. The likely hood of you being rich based off of your race is the problematic part. The fact that you’re more likely to be rich as a white person then a black person. The fact that your more likely to have health problems, go to prison, and be poor as a black person. You can’t just single out some rich and poor people and then call it a day.
Nala Jax yeah this video shows geographic issues that align with historical racism. Why do you think the factories moved to those areas? Why do you think those areas where more favorable to move into? The history of red lining and housing discrimination might help you out here. The video is also supporting the idea that black people are getting more heavily affected by covid. This video isn’t about geography to begin with, so it shouldn’t be talking solely about geography. It’s Pretty simple. It’s talking about the health affects black people face, and why that supports the data that is being shown right now. So not only is this very much about black people and geography, but it also shows that a huge factor of geography and housing in the United States is still very much based on race. I can explain further if you want me to.
Here in Africa different. We're good right here.

@@mcloathin3354 No. First of all, white people can't experience racism. Secondly, while that event is quite tragic, it is the fault of the company, and not the state. I'm not an expert at all but the contaminants measured by AQI are ground-level ozone
,
particle pollution (PM2.5 and PM10)
, carbon monoxide, sulfur dioxide, and nitrogen dioxide. This doesn't include the carcinogens from petrochemical plants. The contaminants measured by the AQI may cause any number of respiratory/cardiovascular diseases, but probably not cancer.
@@graciclecastle thank you grace
Not an expert. Also to add on what has been said, the petrochemical industry most likely pollutes the water and soil in the area as well. The carcinogens from the plant find a way to enter the body through food and water too, not just the respiratory route.
To add to what Teja said, pollutants can enter the body in a number of ways. In Cancer Alley it can be inhalation, ingestion (via the polluted drinking water, agricultural products and seafood), and even dermally (through the skin due to the pollutants raining down and settling on surfaces).
This is so messed up...

I don’t understand why people are saying Vox is racist when they’re using facts and data which you cannot dispute
Sure you can and you should. You can dispute the way the data were collected or how they are interpreted. Those things are up to debate. It is the same thing as when racists use crime and IQ statistics. Don't hold science on a indisputable pedestal because it is the flawed humans that conduct it.
Tibor Stökl however here the statistics shown are census data and showing where people live. which if you want to dispute you can but from the us government they’re fairly accurate
@@bencunningham-walker493 why did they choose this as their one reason black people are dying more from this virus? There's at least 3 very solid explanations for it if you include this reason they gave, this one being the one that most relates to racial treatment through history & that being where they focused the story. It's factual & interesting yes, but it is still telling a story it wants to tell & that happens to be how whites have caused blacks to be dying today.
It would be just as accurate to do a story on how black skin absorbs less vitamin d & the impact vitamin D deficiency has on lung infections & death from them for example
@@lilaclizard4504 i understand it is a bit of a far fetched explanation and it is very specific. i think it would be better if Vox was to call the video something like how persecution has lead to more deaths from corona. or something along those lines
@@bencunningham-walker493 I don't have a problem with their video, or it's title, I'm just pointing out a valid reason as to why some people will say they're being racist to tell this story. Need to put it in context too, this is very typical of the type of stories they do. Again I'm not criticising, I find it interesting, but I can certainly see why some people would say "racist" in response to it
When your county is one of the counties on that bar graph in the beginning of the video -_-
I remember when the virus first hit and the transmission rates of black people were really low. A group got together, not sure if they were radio, tv, or podcast hosts, who said black people can't get the virus. I wonder if that mindset made it so some people didn't follow protocol in less povershed places.
Yeah. Find a way to blame it on white people. That will help the problem

Why the state government haven’t done anything
Cause.... money?
Everyone knows if you got enough dough anything is legal.
because they are the biggest tax contributor to Louisiana. In fact, Exxon Mobil plant is in front of their state capitol building.
$$$$$$
The state created this. The legislature is making money off of big oil.
Because they're poor and Black.
this video would have been helpful yesterday when I was writing my anthro essay on why COVID-19 disproportionately affects black people :(
@You Mad? Oh, thank you Dr. MacStuffup
@You Mad? Nothing else?
- Many African-Americans from impoverished areas in the US are less likely to have health insurance and more likely to live within overcrowded accommodations.
-Many African-Americans are considered essential service workers, which puts them directly in the line of Covid-19's fire.
-Covid-19 has also affected low income families, and "low income" disproportionately means "black" or "brown" in the US.
-African-Americans are more likely to have underlying health conditions associated with fatality.
-The spread of misinformation and rumours that claim that people of African descent are immune to the virus.
@You Mad? Maybe you should educate yourself on why everybody, irrespective of skin colour, is in need of way more vitamin D.
Increasing the flow from the tap is only one way of keeping a leaky sink full.
Idk for u bout as a foreigner i assumed that the reason for this is redlining

Reserve St. John the Baptist parish is my hometown. I grew up there. My mom died of cancer. My aunt and uncle died of cancer. Remember always hearing of neighbors getting cancer. My parents always called it the big C word . Almost as if saying the word was a curse in itself.
My growing up was along the river road between reserve and lutcher. Which was where most my family and cousins were located. St John and St James Parish. Nothing but chemical plants along the river road. Everyone had at least a couple of family members that have passed with cancer. All you have to do is ask.
You must be black then, following the logic of this ridiculous video.
They used Louisiana as the case study for the video and say PM2.5 is main factor but then the study listed them as one of the states with less counties with severe PM2.5.
bravo .. im european and im cryin because of theese things .. lets try to improve
If people are interested in this topic, you should read Petrochemical America by Kate Orff! Its an incredible deep dive into this subject using photography and Landscape Architecture.
Yall never mention 13/50, but we will.
Time to give it a rest 😂
As someone who lives in Louisiana, and specifically in Baton Rouge, I applaud this video!!!
This is a terrible truth. Not just of the chemical plants, but also of the racial inequality.
That final shot, the cemetery on the plant grounds, is a powerful one.
In Denver Colorado, one of the biggest black communities was divided under the I-70/I-25 intersection. These communities suffer way more vehicle emissions than others around them.
How are these chemical companies not regulated? Shouldn't there be a safe way to get rid of waste without unleashing it into the river or the air?

Very educative, thanks!
Can't find that cemetery in that last overall shot - is it an expansion of the Georgia Gulf cemetery mentioned earlier? Because according to the location in Google Earth shown in the middle of the video, the sweeping shot at the end is much larger, with even more industrial plant surrounding it.
No surprise.
New Orleans has been a heavy metal, chemical cesspool for decades.

Turns out, it would be their own lives.

Oh so Trump made these people sick! 😂
I live in this state, and I first heard about this in 2019 on the CBS news.
Poor white, asian, hispanic and other folks suffer the same issues in these and many other areas. It isn't a racial issue anymore, it's a poverty issue. This man is on point, but is not representative enough. Poor people work the hardest jobs in the worst conditions for the least amount of pay with little to no benefits. And most have two of those jobs. They can't afford better housing areas, proper healthcare or quality food, and make too much for government assistance.
Certainly a lot of factors cause coronavirus inequalities, however I'm beginning to believe vitamin d deficiency is the largest factor. Those of color have greater prevalence vitamin d deficiency. We're starting to get studies trickling in that suggest vitamin d levels have a major impact in covid outcomes.
Yup, it definitely ain’t the cancer lol. It ain’t the adverse health problems. It ain’t the lung problems. It’s vitamin d. Ok champ.
