    This is my long awaited review of the Nikon D600( also applies to the Nikon D610) vs the Canon 6D in an Epic, side to side shootout testing some of the most important aspects of the two cameras. As I mention on the video, these are 2 very different cameras. D600/D610 is better as an "all round" camera, the 6D excels in low light (wedding photographers are going to love the 6D).
    You can check out the Crash Course DVDs I have for both cameras on my products page, they are available both as DVD & immediate download: www.michaelthem...

    Im sure there will be plenty of criticism about this comparison, and my intent is to inform my viewers the best that I can about both cameras to the best of my ability. Something I wanted to do was actually show you (evidence) how I came to the conclusions I did, instead of just reading sheet specs. It was a lot of work. If there are mistakes I have made & I imagine there will be, I will do my best to point these mistakes out. I am making a very serious effort to improve the quality of both the information and method of presenting, so I thank you for your support!

    It took me 3 months to decide which one to buy. Finnaly I bought the D610 and I am really happy. I am wedding photographer and I often need the extremely good dynamic range of the D610 to push shadows without introducing noise

    You just changed my decision on my purchase Mike. Thank you so much. I want to shoot landscapes and low light city scenes at night. I was going to stay away from the Canon 6D because I've read about the terrible auto-focus. You proved that to be untrue. I'm now choosing the 6D and I owe you. I'll be purchasing your training video on the 6D. It's a keeper for us night shooters.

    Great work Michael. Not sure if someone has said this already, but with regard to low-light performance, your findings (6D being the winner) only apply to JPEG. -In RAW, D600 is easily one stop better. I recently shot with both. I think the Canon's jpeg rendering engine has a better & more efficient noise reduction & sharpening algorithms. -Which totally explains the superior video performance as well.

    Ridiculously thorough review. As I D600 owner, I completely agree with your assessment of the camera. I find the D600 excels at portraits and landscapes, does well with casual filming (family, trips, etc) in daylight, but struggles when filming low-light video (using my 50mm 1.8 or 24-70 2.8); I also *hate* how you can't change the aperture in live view.
    My other gripe is Nikon's refusal to acknowledge the oil splatter issues and how they devalued the D600 so quickly after its release by releasing the D610 - which seems to exist solely to resolve the shutter issue. I've cleaned my sensor a couple times now and thankfully it has worked out well, but having to do this frequently might get old quickly.
    Other than that, I'm quite happy with my D600. If I was going to do shoot a lot of DSLR video, especially in low light, I'd definitely go with a 5Dmk3, no question about it.

    Great video Michael!
    This video has been a big help in determining which one to get. I'm going to pick up the 6d next month (and yes I'll be picking up your Crash Course video for the 6d)
    One piece of info that was missing I thought was where each camera is manufactured. From what what I was reading the d600/610 is manufactured in Thailand, where the 6d is manufactured in Japan. I'm not saying/implying the Nikon is poorly made at all , but for some people where products are manufactured plays a part in the decision process. It would be appreciated if you could include that information in future videos, or mention it in the video description.
    Thanks again for a great comparison video!

    Great review. A couple of things to add though:
    For those of us who use strobes and shoot on 200mm lenses or longer, the Canon 6D cannot sync flash units with a shutter speed faster than 1/160. Every other modern prosumer DSLR worth considering can sync at least 1/200th (including the Nikon D600). Doesn't sound like much, but it makes a huge difference when you're used to being able to shoot at 1/200th with a flash/transciever. Also for those with less than steady hands and no blessing of IS, this means you won't be within the reciprocal rule when you shoot anything longer than 160mm. This DOES make a difference.
    Secondly, the 5Dmkiii has a built in anti-aliasing filter which made it look better in that aliasing and moire test. However the compromise is sharpness. Manufacturers actually put in these aliasing filters because aliasing actually adds sharpness to a STILL image (and also to video, but it wasn't meant for that, obviously). But when people discovered they could shoot full-frame HD video on the 5Dmkii, everyone would complain about the aliasing/moire. This was Canon's solution for the 5Dmkiii. But you really do lose sharpness. People (Philip Bloom) says you can go into adobe software and add sharpness and it looks good, but I'm not a fan of adding sharpness in post. It's always better to do things right in the field and THEN come back into Lightroom or Photoshop (or FCP).
    Thirdly, it would have been cool to see the uncompressed Nikon footage in the dynamic range test and the low-light/high-ISO tests. But since the 6D doesn't have that option and this was a comparison video, that footage probably wouldn't belong in this video.
    Overall, good video. Seems like you spent a lot of hard work and time into these tests. Keep it up!

    There might be a misunderstanding. The D600 wasn't just slow in low light on low contrast targets without it's AF lamp.... it was unable to focus entirely. It did fine on the other 3 tests. If you don't ever turn your AF lamp off, it wont be an issue.

  • @MMaven
    @MMaven  11 років тому

    I answered this, I said they are very comparable (meaning similar) and I was very specific in my video as to what I said. I focus on how the cameras are different. If the D600 and 6D are similar in RAW, and the 6D is better in JPEG ISO noise, how would that make the D600 be a better camera in RAW? If anything the 6D has the edge in higher ISO on RAW but I didn't see it as significant enough to mention. That not misleading, that focusing on how the cameras are significantly different.

    Thank you Michael for making such an informative video. It compares well the pros and cons of the two cameras. Frankly speaking, your video has put me in dilemma. I use to shoot in films and my whole set up is based upon Pentax. Since, Pentax is not getting a full frame body, and also film processing and printing is history, I have no option but to move to digital. My photographic skills have grown around the format of 36 mm by 24 mm. So, it is close to impossible to downgrade myself with APS-C crop sensor. The two models that you compared are the cheapest full frame DSLR, yet not so cheap. My interest are in candid street photography and most of the time I work on 400 ISO. Sometimes, I do shoot in low light. I have couple of questions for you, if you do not mind. (1) Depending on the type of photography I do, which camera body shall I go for?; (2) Do the Canon 6D offers simulated Yellow, Green, Orange and Red filter while shooting monochrome?; (3) Do the 39 focusing points in the viewfinder of Nikon D600 appears obstrusive while composing a shot, as compared to 11 focussing points of Canon 6D?; (4) Which viewfinder was noticeably brighter? Please guide me on this.

  • @MMaven
    @MMaven  11 років тому

    I agree, In the field shooting is very different. DXO's scores on ISO are in favor of the D600, but when we read the fine print their ISO test also includes a benchmark for dynamic range & color bit depth, which doesn't make any sense. Testing the Dynamic Range, Color Depth and ISO Noise are 3 different things, not one. Additionally their score says nothing of higher ISO levels. I like the D600's dynamic range - it is impressive. Likewise the 6D's low noise in higher ISOs is equally impressive.

    A very interesting and comprehensive review as a Canon fanboy your results confirm what I have been thinking. The 6D spec is not only limited but that in trying to drive the price down or/and make Canon maximum profits they have damaged the ONLY area they still lead Nikon - overall video quality. Its clear to me that if I'm serious about FF DSLR video I have three choices - buy a 5D3, wait for (yet another) new Canon FF that does deliver - lets call it a 6D2 or begin to change back to Nikon

  • @MMaven
    @MMaven  11 років тому

    I did indeed test the outer focus points as well, they all failed in these conditions on both cameras. The 6D's center square is the only one that has low light performance.

  • @MMaven
    @MMaven  11 років тому

    This sounds right. Actual noise on RAW files out of both cameras were much more comparable. It seems the 6D's advantage is mainly in JPEG and Video (which is a form of JPG) and more so when ISO noise reduction is turned on (again it is only applied to JPG). That said, the ISO clean up on the 6D is better than Ive seen on any other Canon camera.

    Mike, great review! I purchased a 6d and couldn't be happier. What I do find ridiculous though is comparing these two cameras simply because Nikon chose to call its camera ENTRY LEVEL. Other than the price, there's nothing entry level about the camera. In my estimation, is a cheaper d800. The Canon on the other hand is truly an entry level, full frame camera. Simplified features for those who don't wanna deal with the learning curve of the d600 or 5d MK III. I

    I hope the 6D has the focusing system of the 7D. It would be perfect!!!! I do own the 7D and i would miss its features. Maybe i'll just try to save more to go for the 5d mkiii. Very great comparison. Very professional and unbiased. Keep it going.

    For a first time user, I like the D3200 more. I have both the D3200 and the D5200, while the flip out monitor is cool and it has better focusing squares, its not worth the extra $300.

    suspect this is already been said, but at 23:00 w/ the girl and tree background, comparison ISO and softness on the 6D, the difference, at least in the example shown, is the focus point; ISO 400 that looks sharp has girl in focus, ISO 25600 has tree in focus.

    Low light performance: go with Canon
    Frame rate, focus speed/focus point grouping: go with Nikon
    Image quality is essentially the same if you shoot in RAW (skin tone difference becomes quite neglectable due to simple post processing).
    I went with a d610. Haven't looked back. Then again, I shoot nature, street and events. Which ever you pick I'm sure you'll be happy with it.

    I dont remember publishing a RAW high ISO test here. Lets see there was JPEG (which includes ISO Noise Reduction), Video (provided & obvious) and RAW banding test (which tests for lines in RAW not noise). The language, descriptions and titles are pretty precise, you might want to watch that part again.

    One feature (not mentioned by Michael) that I think is phenomenal for discreet street photography is the outstanding silent mode of the 6D. It is, of course, not as quiet as my old Leica M6, but it is far better than any DSLR I have ever used. The size of the 6D, its low-light focusing capabilities, great high-ISO noise and silent mode all contribute to making it the best street photography reflex.

    Outstanding review. Thank you for taking the time! I did a shorter pros and cons review of the Canon 6D a few weeks ago. I do a lot of nigh photography and came to the same conclusion. I love the low-light capabilities of the 6D.

      Nikon D610! I just bought one a week ago and I couldn't be happier. Keep in mind that this review covers only the D600 and "some" of the issues are gone in the D610.

      buy an entry level body, get yourself a pro lens to pair it with. camera body's come and go. pro lenses stick with you and have good resale value.

      __DarkBubble__ You are right. D610 is my first option now. I really like it after touched and used it in the biggest digital shopping center in Shanghai last week. I think I will buy it soon.

      littlewing62 Thanks for your advice. I did think of this way. My budget may only afford D610 kit (AF-S 24-85mm/3.5-4.5G ED VR). So the question really comes to buy entry level body+pro lens VS. D610 kit. I really like D610 body after using it in the digital shop. So I guess I will just follow my feel, buy it and stick with it for a while. Then upgrade to pro lens later.

    • @littlewing62
      @littlewing62 10 років тому

      kit lens is not a bad place to start with. specially if you're building your lens collection for full frame bodies. if you get the kit, get yourself a prime lens so you can start learning and experimenting. it's really just the start of your expenses, then a tripod, camera bag, extra battery, flash, cards, filters hehe. good luck and start shooting.

    Much of what is "better" really depends on the person's individual opinion. As I said, the raw banding is at least 1-2 stops better, yes, but someone else might look at the same images and disagree with me, or even say they are better or worse. I can definitely say however, if you shoot a lot of JPEG & video in those ranges, you will definitely see a huge difference, especially at 6400.

    Excellent and best review on D600 and 6D. Oil / dust issue on D600 alone provides the evidience of poor quality control of Nikon, and it's a real shame. The camera is just not worth the money if this issue is there.

    I was not ref. to your video when speaking of the "supposed 6d high iso noise 2 stops advantage over the d600", In fact like I mentioned before ur test was quite thorough and very informative. It clearly help me decide which of both of this cameras to pick up.

  • @MMaven
    @MMaven  11 років тому

    Uh...I did point out that fact (@14:50). I also showed the performance of the D600 with (@12:56), without it's AF light (@14:31), and the 6D "out of the box" (@12:16) with no AF assist. I also summarized the winners under different circumstances (@17:12). You are complaining about things that are clearly explained. So, no you didn't watch the video.

    The D600 is a better all round camera (minus the oil spots). Pros will LOVE the low ISO noise and low light focusing on the 6D.

    Thanks for posting such a well-produced comparison video. I'm a Nikon shooter. Have considered buying the D600. The dreaded oil spots problem put the kybosh on that idea. Am waiting on reviews on new Nikon D7100. I hope you will review it.

    Good comparison however the D600 cannot really be compared to the D610 as the D610 has a new shutter mechanism, faster frame rate and modified auto white balance as well as improved auto focus.
    Just a heads up for anyone thinking of purchasing a D610.

      Jonathan, I'm in a major doubt about D610 or 6D. My objective it's to photograph concerts. The ISO definitely is important. Do you have experience with the D610 or 6D?

    • @jonathanp4128

      ***** After weeks of debate I have literally just sat back down at my desk after visiting Camera World in London and buying a D610. Victor I am by no means an expert however it comes down to many things not just the body. In the past I have done some night club gigs and the low light was definitely a challenge and I was shooting portraits. If you are a current DSLR user then it comes to glass what do you have already and what are you willing to spend etc... etc...Ideally you are going to want some glass with low F stops (zooms if you got the cash, or primes) then ISO doesn't become as much of an issue. I know know the D610 has an ISO auto which gives you an edge but it depends where you sit yourself in the experience scale you may not need this. Again this is a big question and is not just a comparison between D610 and 6D but a Nikon Vs Canon, lens vs lens, flash vs non flash. Sorry but even with your exact circumstances I am not able to help as it comes down to personal preference on how you like your images to look.

    What do you mean by "misleading"? Are you saying the D600 should be afforded a handicap because it is native only to 6400? Im confused by your comment.

    Thanks for the quick reply! If possible, can you post the RAW high ISO comparison pictures too? It might help the RAW shooters, whereas the JPG results are a bit misleading. I'm not sure how much difference this makes, but the Nikon sensor is only native up to 6400, (12800 and 25600 are boost), while the 6D is native up to 25600 I think.
    Thanks again!

    RIght now I own a D7100 and looking to upgrade to a full frame... the main reason is the bad low-light performance, common for a crop sensor. I am trying to compare D610 vs 6D and this is is an amazing pro video you made. At this stage, I am shocked how poor the D610 can perform in low light compared to 6D...

    • @ErsatzSimulacrum
      @ErsatzSimulacrum 8 років тому +2

      +Radu D It looks like it depends.... This video seems to compare JPEG shots. I shoot in RAW, and if you compare the RAW files, the Nikon handles high ISO noise just as well if not better than the Canon. Check it out www.dpreview.com/reviews/nikon-D610/12
      This really should be clear in the video. The Canon has a better onboard image processor to reduce JPEG noise. But if you're shooting RAW and editing your photos with something like lightroom you can reduce noise just as well (which results in a softer image, of course).

      @radu19d 8 років тому

      +ErsatzSimulacrum I went for the 6D... like 6weeks ago, I didn't had much time to use it but I made some portraits, landscapes, macro and I love it. I love the colors, I love that the camera knows what to do in aperture priority mode and get better results compared to D7100. I am sure each camera has pros and cons but I found the one for me :)
