  • This is great. I have one watch with dual barrels in parallel, and a couple of watches with the sweet ease of 18,000 semi-oscillations per hour - BUT I don't have one watch with both. Now I can have one for under $100.

    Thanks for another great video, Bill. Favre Lueba certainly made some great watches and they represent excellent value for money these days when found in good condition.
    Ever since your mention of two mainspring barrels in parallel in your recent video about constant force mechanisms, I’ve been pondering just how two barrels in parallel helps to even out the force provided by the mainspring(s) over the wind cycle.
    With no further mechanism beyond two barrels in parallel, each spring is at peak power when fully wound. The power of each spring follows the power curve common to modern mainsprings, staying level for much of the wind cycle and then it tapers off towards the end.
    Combining the torque of each barrel by connecting them in parallel will result in a power curve of the same shape, with a higher peak, plateau and dip towards the end.
    All the horology theory books and resources I’ve consulted say that two barrels in series extends the length of the wind cycle, and two barrels in parallel increases the torque available. There is no mention of constant force, only higher torque throughout the wind cycle.
    So having two identical mainsprings in parallel (assuming perfect efficiency) doubles the torque available to the movement, but the power output will still vary in the same way it does with a single mainspring.
    I was under the impression that dual barrels in parallel was used to supply extra torque to a movement where geometry and availability of space means it’s easier to accommodate two smaller barrels in parallel than a single larger barrel of the same power. In fact, I’ve read that this is the very reason the Favre Lueba 253 was designed with twin barrels.
    I’d be very interested in any explanation for how two barrels in parallel could help to provide constant force. I can find nothing beyond bold statements by manufacturers, without any explanation or justification of why it is so.
    I found others asking this same question online, too, but no attempts to answer these questions.

    Dear GOD that FP Journe movement is beautifully decorated and designed. It's amazing how much just using Rose Gold elevates the appearance of a movement, plus Rose Gold goes so well with Steel.
    I want to thank you for getting me into Vintage Watches, I'm a horology fan but don't have the most technical mind so having access to a channel that can casually explain the qualities, peculiarities and rarities of older watches and their movements/etc is so informative and useful.

    Hi Bill,
    I would really like it if you explained how two barrels in parallel keep constant torque because as the spring unwinds torque will drop and so will amplitude. On the other hand, two barrels in series when one spring winds down and you get a drop in torque, the other “kicks in” and torque/amplitude increases. In both cases the springs will be shorter, so at the end of the wind the drop won’t be as significant as it is with just one barrel (which normally has a longer spring).
    This is my understanding but I would really like to hear what you think of this perspective.

    • @watchartsci
      @watchartsci  2 місяці тому +1

      Good point Ben. Double barrels in series do not share the power needed to move a gear train through the main torque of the spring as consistently as two working together. If a spring in series is allowed to 'dip' before the hand-off to the second power source (the second barrel), there could be two added surge/dips in the sequence instead of the ones at the beginning and end of single barrels or two working in concert. However, your point and the points for automatic winders have merit. Take care, Bill

    • @BenNS1971
      @BenNS1971 2 місяці тому

      @@watchartsci hi Bill,
      To my knowledge, when you have 2 barrels in series there isn’t really two dips because the second one kick in before there is a significant drop in torque from the first barrel.

    Bill, by looking at the movement, can you see the difference between two barrels in serie or in parallel?
    Where do you have to look at?

    • @mercuriall2810
      @mercuriall2810 2 місяці тому

      It might not be visible, depending upon the movement architecture, but dial barrels in parallel will be mechanically coupled such that they must turn simultaneously.

    I have had vintage favre leuba watches for the last 30 years.
    Dont buy any from India.
    Favre leuba was big in the Raj , but now there is a thriving industry in repainted dials and non original cases and movements.
    And they have spread all over the world to people who seem unaware .
    If there are littes signs of wear , or a brand new looking dial i would steer clear.
