A Nice Affordable Watch Under $500
Вставка
- Опубліковано 13 жов 2022
- Recently my barber asked me about a watch she might get for her boyfriend … ‘around $500.’ After thinking about it for a while, I came up with some from Switzerland, Japan and Germany. Whatdoyathink?
That Tissot can be in a day's work in the board room or a casual wear in the mall. Just change the strap and you're all set
There you go Jogie! from the Board room to shopping for more straps in the Mall! Take care, Bill
Good afternoon Bill. I’m happy to hear that your barber recognized the fact that she had the master in her chair when she asked you for a recommendation. I think you did a fantastic job presenting a great selection of nice watches for her to consider. The Tissot has been a favorite of mine since you first put it in one of your videos a while back. I’m a true believer in lower hertz movements.
Best regards, Brian
Hey Brian, thanks man! Take care, Bill
The Tissot reference has many virtues and dresses up nicely with a simple strap change. Tissot’s new 1938 Telemeter chronograph reference with the black dial and gold printing is one of the best looking offerings of the past year. The watches you highlighted balance off the emphasis on more expensive watches in many circles. There are still a lot of worthwhile watches to be had at affordable prices.
Howard, I would really like to see a Tissot Heritage Petite Seconde that you dressed up ... it'd be mistaken for a Patek Philippe!😉 Take care, Bill
Thank you for this video. I'm very interested in the Tissot. I'm so glad you made me aware of this watch.
Glad it was helpful, Dean! Take care, Bill
Great pics Bill. I'm wearing Fall plaid shirts too, only in the Canadian Prairies.
Wish I was in the woodlands of New England or Eastern Canada.
Have a great weekend!
Chris
There's no such thing as 'too much plaid,' Chris. We're in the Full Color mode and we're getting bright yellows, oranges, reds and mixed in our maple trees...perfect plaid flannel weather! Take care, Bill
I agree with everything you said in this episode except a remark you made at the end, implying somehow that you're not as sensible as others when investing in a watch. I think you are entirely sensible. Hence the theme of this episode. A sensible person buying a watch must first have knowledge (hence the title of your channel, the art and SCIENCE of watch collecting). You came up with a concept for a watch design that maximized quality while minimizing where possible costs. Finally, some of your stories reflect a willing time investment and a clear view of what your own purchasing limits are. All of this adds up to the very fine and admirable collection you possess.
Thanks Russell! All of my videos are a conversation with other watch collectors! Take care, Bill
I just ordered the Tissot watch after watching this video and another video you made on the this Tissot a few years ago. Thanks for making me aware of this watch and the movement in it.
Hope you enjoy it, Dean. Once you adjust the regulator let me know! Take care, Bill
@@watchartsci I don’t know how to adjust the regulator. Is that something I will need to do?
She did very well by asking Bill for recommendations, she will definitely get the most horological value for her money. I really like the Tissot, as it is very good quality, has a recognizable brand name, and is definitely a great gateway for watch collecting. Seiko Turtle is another watch that is great value for money, as it is a watch that can do everything everywhere. I would also recommend the Laco as it is one of the original German manufacturers that used to make Flieger watches in the war.
There are a couple of options from Citizen like the NB1060-12L and the CA7040-85L both are great watches as well. Cheers, Abdul
Hi Abdul! It's Citizen who owns Miyota...not Seiko (my bad). Love that Turtle! Take care, Bill
Wore my NB1060-12L today and it really is amazing, especially the dial.
Found that Tissot reference new on ebay for $329 being sold by Jomashop.
Yes Clyde,, I just hope some are left for my barber when she looks for one for her boyfriend! Take care, Bill
The Unitas 6498 is a great movement; however, as a pocket watch movement, it is BIG ( 16.5''' ) - I think that is the BIG drawback to this movement in a wristwatch ( WristClock? ). When considering a nice affordable non-quartz watch for under five yards, I think of some of the smaller Swiss brands: Atlantic, West End Watch, Zeno Watch Basel, ( I believe they still use ETA movements ) etc. As far as non-quartz Japanese watches, Orient is very hard to beat!
Thanks for those comments Burkhold ... still in all, though, the 6498-1 in a 42mm case isn't a clock, and it ticks at the same rate as the great watchmakers. 😉Take care, Bill
The fit of the movement in the Tissot relative to the size of the case back really elevates it. Usually, a clear sign of a cheaper watch is a tiny window with a wide band of steel around it on the case back, because the movement and case are not fit to each other. I would actually prefer a solid case back with some decoration over this sort of thing.
Good point J Man...fits like a glove! Take care, Bill
I appreciate your presentation of these watches that are not part of your normal horology.
Thanks John! Take care, Bill
Great selection especially the discounted Unitas cal. 649X; please consider continuing with a new series: Affordable horology according to WatchArtSci (increments of $500USD) ;-)
Hi Ccahua, "affordable" is very much a relative term; but $500 for most collectors fits that ... but not everyone. Take care, Bill
Hamilton Khaki Field Mechanical ... Glycine Combat Sub . Two Swiss watches i have that are great . Both well under $500
Thanks Junior!! Take care, Bill
I like the blue dial Laco but wish it had some text above 6 o’clock to balance the look of the dial. Looks a bit empty.
👁❤️🍣, 'white space' can be attractive too .. Take care, Bill
Hi Bill, I appreciate the fact you are talking about affordable watches, don't get me wrong I love what you do and your I learn a lot listening to you. But I get a lot of satisfaction with a Tissot PRX auto (on sale), Bulova Hack field watch, Timex Marlin but also Le Forban, Akrone, Baltic, Yema...and they get spending approved by my boss at home haha ! Thanks Bill for the great content. Pat
Thanks Pat! Take care, Bill
Hi Bill. When it comes to the Tissot Petite Second, I have often been tempted to bite the bullet. Seiko shuffle aside - although the newer, larger, and more expensive models feature hand winding - the 5 is simply legend when it comes to a reliable everyday watch. Check out the Orient Sun & Moon. They are another Japanese brand that offers great value. For years Orient has made the Tri-Star. Believe it or not, this is like a cheaper Seiko 5 for the poorer man.
Yes, Tuna, there are some great and interesting Orient watches. So this means I could wear my Seiko 5 around Orient users to put on airs...😉 Take care, Bill
I just got the Bambino, it is incredible value for $137. Very beautiful.
Have a look at any Tissot with the powermaric 80 movement. With discounts and deal you can pick one of them up for around the £500 mark. Great movement with 80 hour power reserve
Great idea Mel ... especially the ones without the silicon hairsprings. Take care. Bo;;
@@watchartsci I love that you hate the silicone hairspring, hardcore traditionalist, excellent 👌🏼
@@mell3109 I don't "hate" them ... I just don't think they have a place in my collection.
Great picks Dr.! Most people go for the Hamilton Khaki.
Javi, that would be a good choice too. Trying to spread it out between Switzerland, Japan and Germany. Take care, Bill
Orient Stars are really nice with in house movements. I much prefer over most Seikos.
You're right FlyFish ... those are nice watches in the under $500 category. Take care, Bill
I recently bought the tissot watch. Love it
Hey Luis, thanks for letting me know ... great to hear you like it! Have you thought of dressing it up with a new band?🤔Take care, Bill
Good Morning Bill. Excellent suggestions! I have the Tissot and the Seiko 5, they are great watches, especially the Tissot. Miyota belongs to the Citizen Group. What are your thoughts on Frederick Constant, they have in house movements and seem to be a step up from Tissot, sometimes they can be found under 500, but usually in the 750+ range.
Hi Michael, I think that a Freddie is a good step up from the Tissot/Seiko5. One thing about Freddies is to get an all steel case. They use gold plating on their gold watches. Good solid watch. Take care, Bill
Some great choices here Bill.
Thanks Velvia Man! Take care, Bill
Another highly valued watch in that price bracket, are the new Seiko 5 GMT's (SSK001/003/005).
Yes, Ivan, that is a good selection for the traveler. Take care, Bill
Good to hear that your hairdresser is making good money. That will be a nice gift.
I also noticed ALS and PP etc... Run around 21.6k. I also think 21600 is plenty to be very accurate. Plenty exceed COSC at that beat rate.
Harry, I don't have a hairdresser. I have a barber who had a baby and so now I have a new barber ... Jamaican Mon! Take care, Bill
Hi Bill. I like it. It is accurate, well crafted, easy to read and tell the time, and by the way you can "fly under the radar with that watch", because people only look for Rolex, Richard MIlles etc. Best regards Mogens.
Mogens, you can dress it up with a shiny black gator strap for evening wear or dress it down with a fabric band for a field watch..it can be what you want! Take care, Bill
Hi Bill. I bought one a few months ago for the same amount. The good news was that after paying customs duty and vat (25,00 %) it did cost me 500 USD. The price in Denmark by the AD was 7.500 Dkr. which is 1.000 EURO. Cheers Mogens.
Mogens, that is good news and good to hear. How do you like it? Take care, Bill
That Tissot was such a beautiful watch at an excellent price! Painful to find out though that its about 6mm too big.
Adam, it is big for some, 42mm is the max I can handle, but I like watches around 39, 40mm. You would probably like the Seiko 5 since it's more fitting. Take care, Bill
@@watchartsci absolutely! That Seiko 5 is great value for its price! Still love the Tissot's design though. Always enjoy your videos, cheers Bill!
Laco watches offer great value for money, like another German brand Stowa too.
They're great values ... something about Laco that I really like. Take care, Bill
Great choices of watches in your video 👌❤️👍
Hey John, thanks man! Take care, Bill
Great recommendations 👍🏼
Glad you like them Maelob! Take care, Bill
Enjoyed this
Hey David, thanks man! Take care, Bill
Great video & G'morning' Bill ☕☕☕ ..
Now it's time for a good night, Idle! Thanks man! Take care, Bill
Starting with the knowledge there is a high number of crocs in the world, it’s strange that trade of croc watch straps is forbidden to some US states because they are classified as endangered animals. Good video!
Erik, Wildebeest crossing rivers in Africa filled with gators would certainly agree with you. What else is gnu? Take care, Bill
I own two of the watches featured in this video. I got them about two years ago and really enjoy them. My Zeppelin has a dark blue dial, but that’s the only difference. They are both finished to a high standard and I love the design. The Augsburg has a nylon strap that is extremely tough and will probably outlast the watch itself.
My only two complaints are;
- The strap that came with the Zeppelin was absolute garbage. Stiff, thick, uneven and the stiching started to come loose after just a few wears. In fact it’s the worst strap I have ever seen.
- The crown on the Laco is very squeaky when you wind it. I had my trusted watchmaker take a look at it and he did something (grease?) that took care of it… for a few days, then it started again.
If you can live with those issues I can recommend them.
Hey, Harmonica, not to worry, very expensive watches can have the same issues. With the money you saved on the Zeppelin you can spend a little on a great strap! Take care, Bill
Hi Bill. Would you mind doing a re-take on Leinfelder Watches. They were just purchased by the same company that manages Lange and Heyne. Also, what can you share about Florent Lecomte? I also ordered a CVDK because of your knowledge. Thank you.
You're right CJ, I think they closed the deal in July, got rid of the ugly Leinfelder dials and recovered the UWD 33.1 movements for use elsewhere. Wow! You got a Christiaan v.d. Klaauw! Which one? Take care, Bill
I got a custom built Ariadne. Your recommendation was helpful. Also, is it worth pulling the checkbook out for a Lienfelder now?
@@CJ-rb3do No Lienfelder is now extinct.
Laco makes very solid watches.
Yes, I'd like to find out more about them. Take care, Bill
Some will find Glycine at prices lower than $500: Jomashop, etc.
Excellent point John! Glycine is definitely affordable, especially on Jomashop! Take care, Bill
Hi Bill, Which one do you own those watches? Baltic MR01 $545 need to be in your list 😁 Love the micro rotor.
I own the Seiko 5-$97, Seba! Thanks for the tip on the Baltic! Take care, Bill
I don't like the Tissot branding in these low end watches
Ok. Which ones do you like, HW? Take care, Bill
What do you think about Swatch mechanical watches? 🤔
Depends on which one, Lexcoaster. I have a high opinion for the Tissot and others they make without succumbing to silicon hairsprings. Take care, Bill
Swatch System 51 looks cool, but I believe that it has a bunch of plastics and it’s not serviceable.
@@micheldepaula8733 Well put.
Miyota is Citizens, right?
Yes, Olli, somehow I was thinking it was a Seiko brand, but it is Citizen. Take care, Bill
Myota movements are made by Citizen.
Yes, my bad Mark & Lynne. I thought they were a subsidiary of Seiko. Take care, Bill
I think Miyota is owned by Citizen.
Yes Martin, somehow I was thinking it was a Seiko brand, but it is Citizen. Take care, Bill
@ $389, it's a Yes Yes!
@ 42mm, it's a No No!
Understood Cosweez! Take care, Bill
@@watchartsci 😎
Orient Stars are really nice with in house movements. I much prefer over most Seikos.
FlyFish, aren't Orient watches owned by Seiko? Take care, Bill
@@watchartsci Yes Bill they are owned by Seiko Epson but have their own distinct movements. The Star line is a step up from the regular Orients in fit, finish and movements.
