Gohan DID need Goku to do that. Even though Goku didn't do the proper transformation first, he was ahead of everyone when it came to SS2. He had already tapped into it previously and was literally the only person who knew it was an actual thing. Without Goku, Gohan wouldn't have been trained to initiate SS2. Do you really think he'd have obtained that form WITHOUT Goku's help?
It's actually implied Gohan could beat Cell without that form. Gohan thought that neither Goku nor Cell were taking the fight seriously even though Goku went at it pretty much full force. SSJ2 just let him go overkill as well as the unchained aggressiveness that countered his own refusal to fight.
and if Krillin and Goku was a BIT genius.. they could make it poisonous, and make it quick and easy, as Cell could not regenerate his cells from toxification. so the saga could have ended relatively quickly

The thing I like ab this saga is that everybody was at fault in producing perfect cell. Krillin didnt kill 18, Vegeta let Cell absorb 18, Trunks was too scared to fight Vegeta so he didnt kill 18 or Cell, Goku gave cell a senzu bean, etc.
Vegeta was the biggest fuckup of them all... Krillin & Trunks didn't kill 18 because they realized deep down she wasn't an evil person. Even Trunks, who frequently had nightmares about her & 17 in his timeline for years, only told her to run away instead of finishing her off when he could, because even he knew 18 didn't deserve to die. All stupidity aside, it really fleshes out Goku's character. It shows his trust in Gohan's abilities, his confidence and his devotion to fair-play. I think it's a great scene.

Trunks is kind of at fault, too. The second Vegeta was out of the way, he should have blasted Semi-Perfect Cell's head off and then proceeded to destroy the rest of it. He gave Cell too much leeway.
I think it's safe to say they're all at fault, save for Piccolo and Tien, they were the only two who were legitimately trying to stop cell, everyone else dropped the ball. Vegeta let cell absorb 18, Krillin was more worried about potentially getting laid by a cyborg and let 18 live, Trunks held back because "muh father's pride", Goku with the bean, and Gohan with dicking around too much during his curbstomp moment and not finishing off Cell before he could self destruct.
As much as I believe in the concept of equality and fairness, this move by Goku is by far ONE OF THE STUPIDEST THINGS that someone in his position can do. he knows about all the atrocities that Cell has Commited by now. he knows first hand how strong Cell is at this point, and even if Gohan has become incredibly powerful at this point, the decision to give Cell to replenish his strength is almost as stupid as giving Frieza that energy near the end of their final battle on Namek. at least in that time, Goku spared Frieza because he decided to give him a chance to change his ways, so as stupid as that was, there was also a desire from the protagonist for the main villain to be a better person. In Cell's case however, Goku just decides to go noble to the point where it stops being noble, and starts to be stupid, and downright inconsiderate. Cell has killed who knows how many people to eventually reach this form, and he plans to eradicate everything that isn't perfect like him. The fact that Goku just ignores from how monstrous Cell's behavior and ambition is, just for the sake of "playing fair", while puting the life of his own son on the line, just shows that Goku is at times the worst kind of person to have so much power at his command, and at times, the worst kind of person for us to be dependent on to save us. I'm not saying that I hate Goku, or that he is a despicable person, but a lot of times, I have noticed this pattern of him not giving any thought to all the possible collateral damage that his decisions and behavior can generate. Also, when I heard that Goku actually could've kill Buu a lot sooner, but decided not to because he wanted to give THE KIDS A CHANCE TO FIGHT BUU AS WELL, I'm slowly starting to realize why Zamasu hates him so much.
Late but I think this was the smartest thing goku has done, if cell wasn’t given a senzu bean at his power and heard that gohan was stronger than goku, he probably wouldn’t have held back, on top of that he wouldn’t have generated enough rage for gohan to achieve ssj2 like the cell jrs attacking his friends

Trunks is kind of at fault, too. The second Vegeta was out of the way, he should have blasted Semi-Perfect Cell's head off and then proceeded to destroy the rest of it. He gave Cell too much leeway.
I think it's safe to say they're all at fault, save for Piccolo and Tien, they were the only two who were legitimately trying to stop cell, everyone else dropped the ball. Vegeta let cell absorb 18, Krillin was more worried about potentially getting laid by a cyborg and let 18 live, Trunks held back because "muh father's pride", Goku with the bean, and Gohan with dicking around too much during his curbstomp moment and not finishing off Cell before he could self destruct.

It's even more hilarious to look back at this scene again after Goku pulled the same shit with Moro and almost doomed the entire universe😂
As much as I believe in the concept of equality and fairness, this move by Goku is by far ONE OF THE STUPIDEST THINGS that someone in his position can do. he knows about all the atrocities that Cell has Commited by now. he knows first hand how strong Cell is at this point, and even if Gohan has become incredibly powerful at this point, the decision to give Cell to replenish his strength is almost as stupid as giving Frieza that energy near the end of their final battle on Namek. at least in that time, Goku spared Frieza because he decided to give him a chance to change his ways, so as stupid as that was, there was also a desire from the protagonist for the main villain to be a better person. In Cell's case however, Goku just decides to go noble to the point where it stops being noble, and starts to be stupid, and downright inconsiderate. Cell has killed who knows how many people to eventually reach this form, and he plans to eradicate everything that isn't perfect like him. The fact that Goku just ignores from how monstrous Cell's behavior and ambition is, just for the sake of "playing fair", while puting the life of his own son on the line, just shows that Goku is at times the worst kind of person to have so much power at his command, and at times, the worst kind of person for us to be dependent on to save us. I'm not saying that I hate Goku, or that he is a despicable person, but a lot of times, I have noticed this pattern of him not giving any thought to all the possible collateral damage that his decisions and behavior can generate. Also, when I heard that Goku actually could've kill Buu a lot sooner, but decided not to because he wanted to give THE KIDS A CHANCE TO FIGHT BUU AS WELL, I'm slowly starting to realize why Zamasu hates him so much.
Or Goku deep down, he knows he can beat Cell easily if something doesnt go as planned. he just wants his son to get his Super Saiyan 2 Breakthrough

Late but I think this was the smartest thing goku has done, if cell wasn’t given a senzu bean at his power and heard that gohan was stronger than goku, he probably wouldn’t have held back, on top of that he wouldn’t have generated enough rage for gohan to achieve ssj2 like the cell jrs attacking his friends
