Nuka Break was probably one of, if not the most passionate fan project I've ever seen get put together. I also thought you and Chris were by far the funniest and most Fallout-y part of that climactic final battle too, lol.
I remember discovering Fallout as well as Nuka Break. It instantly became one of my favorite game series as well as favorite IP's. Love your stuff, Tim. So glad I found your channel, you've convinced me to go into game dev!
Tim! Thanks for chatting about Nuka-Break! I Loved working on this project so much. One of the best parts was getting to meet you and Chris! I loved being on set with you in between takes chatting Fallout and getting insights into how it all came to be! :)
If there is any justice in the world, there is a video where Michele Specht (Red) records a video and talks about meeting Tim Cain and she says "and I think he brought his own gun!" :)
Curious your thoughts with the on-going Unity news i.e. regarding the changes to payment plans, on if this would be a reason to rate rolling your own engine higher now? Or if there are ways to design code / games that could be more portable to another engine in the event you had to abandon ship a larger one?
I really enjoyed the little details that Nuka Break captured about fallout and how they managed to weave a space for their story from the existing material, there was a lot of talent involved and it was clearly a passion project. It was heartbreaking that they weren't able to work on their Legend of Grimlock series after their company was... acquired. I'd put hours into that game and wanted to see what they'd come up with. I love Fallout Nuka Break! That was my high-school days. That was an interesting time to be a fan. Post New Vegas pre Fallout 4. Lots of amazing lore videos, from channels like ShoddyCast and amazing fan shorts like Nuka Break.
Hi Tim, First of all, thank you for making these video. Regardless of a topic, it's always a joy to listen to your stories. I'd like to ask a question about the data structures in Arcanum that you've made a video about some time ago. I've been playing around with pretty much the same concept of designing data structures for game entities in one of the projects I'm working on - specifically using entity prototypes as the base data containers and "overrides" for storing overriden data fields for actual entity instances in the game's world (map/scene/sector). I'm specifically interested in how Arcanum handles the deserialization of these "overrides" from the stored binary data. From what you've said in the aforementioned video, I understand there's a bitmask/bitfield that is used to determine which data fields are supposed to be read from the prototype (bit = 0) and which from the override (bit = 1). You've also mentioned that the overrides are stored in order in which they are set in the bitfield. All that is perfectly clear (and clever!). The one thing that I'm not quite sure about though is how are these overrides deserialized back from binary data - specifically how is their type resolved in C/C++, meaning without any metadata, Reflection-like systems, and generally no runtime type resolving or casting. As I understand it, when there are, say, two data fields marked in the bitfield as overriden, the game will read them from the binary data that should equally contain 2 serialized values. But how are these values deserialized at runtime, when we don't know what types they should be interpreted as at runtime? Or are the overrides stored in binary along with some identifier to which there is a manually hardcoded mapping determining the type? Perhaps I'm just missing some trivial detail here, but this issue has kept my mind occupied for a couple of weeks now and I would appreciate any leads to finally bring it "the peace of understanding".
You mentioned what the ruined town on set look liked and it made me think of a question I've always had about the art in Fallout1 and 2. With the exceptions of towns like New Reno and Klamath, which obviously had pre-war buildings, where the villages intended to be post war adobe structures or was that just a limitation of the engine of the time.
I had no idea there was a 2nd season of Nuka Break! And I was super into the first (what I thought was the only) season of it. Great, goofy, lore-friendly fun. Thanks for posting the links, Tim!
Oh man, thanks for talking about Nuka Break! This was one of my first Kickstarter projects after Double Fine, good times. They really knocked it out of the park, incredible production design for the budget, I was so proud of them. Amazing costumes and so funny!

And this brings up a question, has anyone from the Amazon series contacted you for consultation? Also, I know it was a weird scenario due to the release of Outer Worlds during the specific time period, but did you ever get around to trying Fallout 76?

Nuka Break is downright amazing. The quality and passion is just OOZING from it. And it's funny how you think of your involvement as small, but every time there's a discussion about it, it's agreed on that the sole fact that you and Chris Avellone took part in the project, basically doubles its legitimacy as a "proper" entry into the Fallout universe.
