RE-UPLOAD: Apologies, we had a problem with the last file. Savage Industries EDC 4 Bucket Bag: adamsavage.com/products/savage-industries-edc-four-bucket-bag
Should look into using solid rivets there, they look so much nicer than pop rivets, and you can get aircraft grade ones cheap, and either buy, or make the tooling on your lathe.
Apologies accepted. :) I'm just glad my browser still showed me the timestamp I was at when I tried to re-start playback this morning (after pausing to go to sleep last night), so I could pick back up where I left off. :) Had it not done that, that "This video is unavailable." message would have been a lot more frustrating. ;)
I absolutely love letting my eyes wander around the workshop and seeing all those pretty and funny things in the background, like Simone's folding coat hanger prototype, the set of bananas to scale, the pile of WIP hats, or that amazing wooden toolbox/drawers cabinet on the right at 2:20. These videos are a joy to watch for the work being done and for the environment in which it is being done.
I always appreciate that you post your projects regardless of them turning out as a huge success or not. We all need to see that even the people we look up to have less than perfect results after hours of planning and executing an idea. I recently had 3 small edc pouches I made from xpac knowing the first was gonna be a prototype and expected failure I was hopeful with the second. Mistakes were made and #3 was certainly gonna be it but it just didn’t have the rigidity I was aiming for.
If you offer a lid option for the official bags you sell, it might make more sense for it to open the other direction, lengthwise.. Especially if you're intending to open it on occasion while on it's side. Would be even cooler if the lid could be folded down flush against the inside of the bag's sides when not in use. I saw something similar back in the 90's and it was basically these rigid flaps with folds, much like a pull-down visor in a car.. And they lay against the side to be used as a bucket or folded up to be used as lid. A piece of strap from the outside of the bag was then slotted through loops that were on those flaps, when up in the lidded position, to secure it close. I have no idea what this bag was, it was on my grandma's church donations by someone and I only saw it briefly but I've always remembered how cool and functional it was, while still keeping it's shape.
It was cool meeting you and getting to say hello at the TSA lane at SFO the other week. Keep up the good work…and if you ever need anything aquarium-related for future experiments, I’d be happy to help!
I love you Adam, but I also love seeing simple things over-engineered! The airport security will love all that metal!!!! Love love love!!!! Safe travels!
The lightweight aluminum is actually such an interesting material for bag... I think if you redid the frame from scratch (maybe titanium?) you could probably even utilize the bendyness to have it slide into the sides of the bag. The idea of sliding open an overhead or under-seat bag without any zips or opening space seems elite. Kinda makes me wanna take a breadbox as a flight bag
I would love to get one of these bags when they come out! I think I would personally try and modify mine to have a release mechanism on or near the handle you use to pull it open so I could operate it in “one motion” with one hand!
To stop the wire bending around too much maybe add something like some small belt clips towards the middle to go around the wire? They may fit perfectly where the side stoppers were installed around 10:50. I’m not sure how much it would help to keep the shape of the wire but it may be worth a shot?
Your bag looks like it's space program spec. A carry-on essential for the discerning astronaut, embarking on a mission requiring sandwiches and clean undies.
Now that I’ve seen this I’m going to have to wait for this to be available before I make a purchase. Just a beautiful design. It even sounds nice as you close it.
I was watching a spacewalk recently, and the trash bag they had was so interesting, I've wanted to make something like it since seeing it. It was a soft bag with a stiff, clear, magnetic-latching, double flap lid. It's fun how similar aesthetic preferences lead us both to want such similar items
A wire frame that goes to the bottom to hold the lid? To help it to stand better? Or just clip it to existing frame? How does it affect carry? I'm on a similar path as your edc one was except for mine is a backpack. Using waxed canvas or oilcloth. Gonna try both. I'm slightly broken and normal packs don't fit right. And as much as I like your bags, all of them, they're not what I want to hike with. I'm definitely considering some of your pouches tho!
I'm starting to think this would make an excellent bag for work. Might need to add dividers into the interior and am a little concerned how quickly it would get dirty (being white) but it might be worth it!
Using a small simple slide lock like for a door to lock the top would be cool and if you made the top trays magnetic it would be nice for holding screws and such.
Wouldnt it be easier and cheaper to make the lid out of the same thing as the rest of the bag? Canvas or whatever it is, with a zip? That lid looks like you could cut or hurt yourself on it.
When seeing the initial bag and flat aluminum stock I assumed it'd be cupped edge and fit over the top like a lid rather than an inset hatch design. Could still have the half lids that way, but it could be secured with two low profile hasps on the outside edge.
I like the idea of a lid for the bag. When biking lpds make bags more useful. I like your first pass and hope you refine it and bring to market. While the handle for opening looks useful, it removes the flat top I would prefer.
Adam. For your latching mech. Would you ever consider a spring loaded pin latch. I’m not sure if they make something super small in that format. But I know your skills could cobble something together.
I covet one of those bags. They're way more than I can afford, but it's always nice to have a few (what I would dub) "ambition items" that you work and save for.
You can even put modules of things to the velcro, not sure how easy it will be to take off. for instance, you need screws, grab out the module, stick it to one of the velcros, and maybe another module could be types of glue. If you want to use the bag as a work bag... I'm sure someone could make their own modules for their own uses.
Fantastic video. But as some who has been travelling lot lately. I'm thinking a non metal material for the lid? Might make going through TSA easier? Just a thought
I would probably 3d print one and make a canvas sleeve to go over it so that it matches the look of the bag, and maybe put pen holders or even a little zippered bag.
watching Adam pounding on the bench vice in the hardware store...seeing the royal orb and the Indiana Jones idol wobbling...I'm itching, just waiting for them to topple off the bench! You've gotta put some cross-braces on that table! lol
Interesting, why not have a rotating latch? like a bar in the middle that goes into slots on the surface and one end you have an upright to lock through. That will hold both sides down for you and be opposite to the force applied, so unlikely to come undone on its own.
Given its for travel you might just run a set of reinforcement straps across made out of slightly thicker Aluminium rather than thicken the entire thing. As weight is a factor. A set of rib straps would help with rigidity and strength.
You should have used washers behind rivets or smashed them flat. There is a lock chuck on cordless drill when using smooth drill bits. Lock in chuck then click chuck back with your hand. Hay prestow 😊😊😊 keep up with content 😊
I really, really want to know what this 'problem with the last file' was that is the motivation for the re-upload. I noticed nothing wrong when I watched it the first time around!
I wonder if the bag can be damaged by picking it up by the centre lid handle. This is, because anyone other than the owner, is very likely to do just that.
Looking at the pin closure next to the handle makes me wonder if there's some way to incorporate sliding or rotating the handle as the locking system like this old cook kit lid: ua-cam.com/video/s7ZOgxt5QXI/v-deo.html
Did the air Port security have any problems with the cover made of metal. Could you use one of those mesh laundry bags for the top and just use a draw string.
I guess I don't get the overall concept. A rigid metal lid to a soft bag seems to defeat the purpose of having a soft bag to begin with. At that point why wouldn't I just go for a dedicated carry-on bag?
I had a similar thought at first. Thinking about it because it is his bag and he wants to use it, I would guess. Also, the lid is removable so he can change it back when needed. Also, he would rather build something than buy it since it is within his skill set.
The only reason I won't get one of these bags is because I got a first-run kit bag and it's seen me through almost a decade of airports and weekenders and road trips. Damn thing is tougher than Buster.
Great project for your interns and them sell them as add-ons. Someone orders a bag and wants a lid, take an extra week, make the lids then ship them as a kit to install on the bag ...
I love this lid you created, but I also feel like this is somewhat over-engineered. Why not just make the tote a doctor's bag style opening that hinges shut?
I feel that the solution isn't thicker material (it wasn't for NASA) rather corrugation (or an X shape pressed into the caps). For sure tho, it needs its own frame that "clips" in the existing one. Also, smoothed out edges, perhaps a turned lip. So this needs to be a pliable aluminium to allow fabrication.
That aluminum seems really dangerous; someone reaching past your bag to get theirs could get sliced. Seems like the 3d print would be safer. Rounded edges for the win.
I have a challenge for Adam, put on a moon space suit, spend as much time on the X-ray machine as Armstrong spent on the surface of the moon, and tell us your impressions afterwards.

Any chance that pdf or printed plans will be available for this model?

P.S. to@@SeanBZA -- IMHO, that comment would have been better as a top-level comment. It's kind of off-topic here.
What was the issue?
I think if someone told me to describe Adam using only an abstract noise, I would choose the wobbly sound sheet metal makes when you shake it.
Bead roll or press in X patterns or corrugations into the aluminum lid to increase stiffness.
Came here to suggest the same thing. Wouldn't have to be too big to make a difference 👍

The aluminium lid might have been a rapid build, but to avoid it being flagged by TSA I might have used your lovely X1-C and made it out of PA6-CF.
I'm a "tactical tailor" myself so I love these sewing videos
Late night Tested? Appreciate you guys putting in the hours reuploading.

What in the world is blurred out on the edge of the bench?
There was a name and phone number written on the bench in the original upload
@@dlhartwell ah ok hope all is ok then and stayed private 👌

you could flute the lid halves with a bead roller to stiffen it up without adding weight maybe a simple x pattern like on the side of a jerry can
You remind me of my Dad, he loves building gadgets upon gadgets, widgets and upgrades, for the eventual efficiency of doing.

That blue tone that anodizied aluminium takes is just so vibrant. Wish i could have a car in that exact colour ;)
Your bag looks like it's space program spec. A carry-on essential for the discerning astronaut, embarking on a mission requiring sandwiches and clean undies.
It even looks like he has picked up some lunar regolith
Curious - could the aluminum be dimpled to provide more structural rigidity?

I once got told the story of the Old Bull and the Young Bull!
Adam has Still got a lot of Young Bull in him. 🤣
Adam I love watching you work!😊
Awesome
Can you just bead roll in strengthening as per aircraft?
Why is there something little censored on the table?
It was personal information, so was hidden

WHY IS THERE A BLURRED SPOT ON ADAMS DESK? it is in the upper left corner in this frame. just at the tip of the angle.
I'd wager that he probably wrote a phone number or other personal info down while on a call and forgot it was there.
Amazing how Adam can make any subject fascinating.

I have so many ideas for a tool carrier but I’ve been trying to use off-the-shelf molle systems and there are features I’d like that are missing..

Hope you put it on its side so TSA can scan it. Otherwise, I hope you like manual bag searching every time you check in to the airport.
Easier and cheaper…remember this is Adam.

Bead rolling wohld make that thin metal more bobust, it would be a trade off though of work time vs. material cost for the extra rigidity.
Ah, so Adam traveled from home to BC. I _knew_ he was working on a secret time machine build!
It looks great one small thing what happens when it rains. The lid would fill up quite quickly and you did say that you were coming to England. 🌧☔.

Look into RV water heater door latch to use as a closure, folds flat when closed.
You can even put modules of things to the velcro, not sure how easy it will be to take off. for instance, you need screws, grab out the module, stick it to one of the velcros, and maybe another module could be types of glue. Maybe strengthen the thin aluminium with a press by using dimple dies.

It seems like the latch could be like a spiral on a swivel rather than having to find wherever it fell away on the lanyard. Cool bag idea tho!
