The hand carving, the hand bending on the snakes, the perfect surface polish.. all down to the 2 side screws even lining up with a vertical drive slot. That was unreal, I don’t think I’ve seen a more superbly crafted, filmed, and edited piece of art. All around amazing. The pieces themselves were so perfect it looked like computer renderings. I had that moment when he hand-engraved the whole plate. I was completely expecting something like photoresist with the way he drew it out on paper first.
if anyone is wondering what this device is used for, here is an explanation: Playing card presses have been around for more than a century. Early playing cards were very expensive and were made of poor quality paper that would easily warp after a few uses. To protect the cards and keep them flat these types of card presses were invented. Many different models were manufactured out of different materials and many of them were intricately designed. As the quality of cards improved the demand for these presses dwindled. Modern card presses are used by card players who live in very humid climates and magicians who prefer using playing cards that are completely flat.

20 minutes of picking my jaw up off the floor and putting my eyes back in their sockets over and over again! There are a bunch of full length videos I'd love to see in here about the engraving process and tools, that plating setup and process, the dark silver finish, even just a stream of consciousness while sketching the pattern on the top of the plate. Chris Ramsay was spot on in his description of this masterpiece. By that I mean he really could not come up with the words to describe the precision, artistry, and craftsmanship of this card press. Chris, you are an amazing craftsman, artist, and machinist. Your dedication to your craft is without equal. I am absolutely in awe of your work.
sometimes you see art and you're like "that's nifty" then you see a master of their craft and the hours they put into a single project like this.... and there are no words
I see Jewelers and clock makers, as needing similar skill sets to machinists and like metalworkers, except jewelers and clockmakers have a bit more patience and a few more magnifying glasses.
there is nothing more mesmerizing than to see a true master craftsman push the envelope and create a piece that the only description you'll be able to say is "Jewelry" for a card press.
I'll just make this snake pattern by hand, no problem! and then Imma just bend it in some random way! oh look, I did another identical one! how weird is that?
He never did play fair. Every other machinist channel has gone "I don't need a Clickspring finish on this.. so... ehhh...." for ages. Chris, like Beethoven and Einstein, don't even have to play fair.... Because they are/were the only ones in their league at that point in time :P
I was just beginning to appreciate this dudes talent and then I saw the amateur move of cutting the serpents in two pieces instead of weaving them through crossholes before forming them to final shape (yyyeah, right). Had someone showed me these works and told me it was done all by hand, I would have called BS as I didn't realize such a Master Craftsman still existed these days. This is by far the most inspiring work I've ever seen. Ever. You are amazing! Thank you for sharing this video! I never knew what a Playing Card Press was and I still don't, but I want this one!
Words can't even express how amazing your work is. I've always considered you a high talented and creative person, but now I am convinced. You, sir, are a downright artisan.
Only clock makers have the absolute precision and eye for the tiniest detail that you show in every one of your builds..just..every single piece that you make is just an incredible work of art that shows how much you care for each and every tiny little spec in a build
I skipped to the end of the video because I mainly wanted to know what this thing was for, and when I saw the plate I figured it was CNC'd. Saw your comment and had to go back and watch. Unbelievable!
I'm not sure which is more impressive, hand drawing the design, or engraving it. Both exceed my skill levels by multiples normally only used in calculating distances between galaxies!
@@windsunh2o I watched it all the way through, and while it's beautiful work I still have no idea what it's for. Why the heck do you want to "press" a deck of cards? To work the curvature out caused by too much shuffling?
I've watched this video 3 or 4 times now, and I still can't figure out the spacial awareness necessary to get the snakes into the correct formation so you can make it work. Well freakin' done.
Yes there are methods to all this that he doesn't entirely show. He probably is comparing to a wire frame like the other comment said. But that doesn't take away from how masterfully crafted this all is. Just shows how much knowledge and passed down wisdom you need to get to this level. Heck even small things like how he filed a perfectly square, perfect straight hole for that handle, like I don't even know how he did that by hand.
i know! the camera helps lose any sense of scale, making it look like he just milled a piece of 2" steel bar, and then you find out outs just a little screw, or pommel cap.
That was possibly one of the most amazing works of craftsmanship I’ve ever seen, even considering the already high bar your other work has set. The finished shots of the engraved plate made it look so perfect that I could have easily been convinced it was a computer rendering. Great to see another video from you.
A word to describe the shear artistry in the piece has yet to be thought up. It was a pleasure to watch just how great this piece of art was made. Congratulations to all who participated in this project you can all be truly proud of yourselves. Thank you.
@@ShinyMajor I was literally going to make this comment. Some things in life require a little more care. The nice things, if you will. Like Clickspring.
So I’m watching him draw this beautiful design on paper, and then when he laser prints it on a transparency I think “cool, He’s going to acid etch the design, there’s no way even Chris can hand engrave all of ...” well, shit. How many previous lives do you have to go without caffeine to have hands this steady? Dude’s a wizard.
The consistency of that engraving when you're making helixes is maddening. 😀 I loved watching you make the first snake and logo, but the process you used on the second set really interested me.
When you think you've seen it all on clickspring and then: nope - he goes on to engrave an intricate pattern onto a brass platter....by hand! Awesome beyond words.
Same here. I was impressed by the hand bending, and then out of nowhere comes a second that is bent identical! What?! And then seeing them interwoven into that...whatever it is? #nextlevel

Gotta love when every single part and component is as intricate and beautiful as the entire assembly as a whole
sometimes you see art and you're like "that's nifty"
then you see a master of their craft and the hours they put into a single project like this.... and there are no words
Couldn't have said it better
This is not metal working, this is jewelry of the highest order.
Robert Langford yeah I honestly think this guy must be a jeweler because his level of skill and precision is absurd
Professional clock maker.
He's not even trying to pretend he's playing fair anymore, is he?
I'll just make this snake pattern by hand, no problem!
and then Imma just bend it in some random way!
oh look, I did another identical one! how weird is that?
He never did play fair. Every other machinist channel has gone "I don't need a Clickspring finish on this.. so... ehhh...." for ages. Chris, like Beethoven and Einstein, don't even have to play fair.... Because they are/were the only ones in their league at that point in time :P
Me: oh cool, he's going to acid etch the bottom plate to get that amazing design!
Me 10 seconds later: 😯😯😯
clickspring: *starts drawing very intricate floral pattern*
me: oh no...
clickspring *copies it on film*
me: thank god, it's gonna get etched
clickspring: *doesn't etch a thing*
me: you absolute mad man!
found it interesting that he's left handed!
That was the part that really impressed me this time. Always something with these videos that just amazes me.
@@wiflare He's probably not, he just decided to use his left hand for this project for the extra challenge... LOL
that part gave me anxiety for some reason
@@wiflare I didn't even notice.
"Exquisite" is not a word I've ever actually had occasion to use before. This is exquisite work.
I was looking for the right word, maybe "perfection" or "premium", but "exquisite" sounds right.
Took the word right out of my mouth.
I went with "masterclass"
That ingraving is just at such a masterlevel quality, incredible
I love the piece and I how you used This Old Tony's manufacturing techniiques. Beautiful work.
#1 comment for this video
Truly stunning! I really love the influence This Old Tony has had on your editing :-)
Only clock makers have the absolute precision and eye for the tiniest detail that you show in every one of your builds..just..every single piece that you make is just an incredible work of art that shows how much you care for each and every tiny little spec in a build
12:20 "Oh, he's going to etch it. Of course, not even he would be crazy enough to..."
Chuu Ni my thoughts too haha
Exactly the same thought hahaha
i know there are some great gunsmiths that wouldnt even touch that kind of engraving. either you're good at it or you suck.
Yep same here! He's a mad man! 😆 the v grove does add so much to it tho.
Yes! That’s exactly what I though! Then I saw the poor transfer after he pulled the acetate away and thought “No way...”
Watching him do the plate with the sun in the middle literally made my jaw drop open...I am in awe..
Those engraving skills though... Damn.
@@Syncopator Chris Ramsay himself explains its use on this video ua-cam.com/video/ws99HWLzjlo/v-deo.html
You're a class act Chris. If there is ever an Emmy or Oscar equivalent for You tube posts, that, is in the running.
Beautiful Design.
Beautiful Craftsmanship.
Beautiful Music.
Beautiful Video Work.
Excellence in Art.
Bravo!
I've watched this video 3 or 4 times now, and I still can't figure out the spacial awareness necessary to get the snakes into the correct formation so you can make it work.
Well freakin' done.
The bit you don’t see is him testing the form with a wire first but nonetheless it’s still incredible seeing what he does
Yeah blew my mind too
Yes there are methods to all this that he doesn't entirely show.
I know how he did the 2nd one, he just snapped his fingers 👍
I love watching the lathe parts where I lose a sense of scale, then when he comes in for the hand work I realize it's been like #6 threads all along!
i know! the camera helps lose any sense of scale, making it look like he just milled a piece of 2" steel bar, and then you find out outs just a little screw, or pommel cap.
That was possibly one of the most amazing works of craftsmanship I’ve ever seen, even considering the already high bar your other work has set. The finished shots of the engraved plate made it look so perfect that I could have easily been convinced it was a computer rendering. Great to see another video from you.
The skills some people have .. just mind-blowing. Calling it simply craftsmanship wouldn't do it justice. Outstanding! Thanks for sharing.
A word to describe the shear artistry in the piece has yet to be thought up. It was a pleasure to watch just how great this piece of art was made. Congratulations to all who participated in this project you can all be truly proud of yourselves. Thank you.
Great ode to ToT in this. Chris - freaking amazing work. You've outdone everything we could have expected. Great to see your work again.
Okay, show of hands. Who else wants to see an Alec Steele/Clickspring collab? That engraving is gorgeous!
I was thinking a collab with Uri Tuchman would be amazing. He has such unique designs and is a damn good engraver as well.
@@lamontcranston8181 would be neat
Alec will freak out
@@Intrigarium Ah, but that's half the fun!
Uri would be a much better person to work with. Alec is rather too aggressive in his video approach to marry nicely with Clickspring's work.
Welcome back! Its been like 6 months! This isn't showing in my sub feed yet but thankfully I was subbed to Chris Ramsey.
This is one of the few channels I actually have notifications on for
@@ShinyMajor I was literally going to make this comment.
Yay he's back, he hasn't forgotten us after all!!!
That bluing just kills me. Beautiful, beautiful stuff, mate. Very well done.
When you think you've seen it all on clickspring and then: nope - he goes on to engrave an intricate pattern onto a brass platter....by hand! Awesome beyond words.
But first drew the pattern free hand
brandon boyd which is equally as impressive as the freehand engraving.
Some of those parts look so perfect I have to keep reminding myself that they aren't just rendered models.
Oh my goodness!! CLICKSPRING HAS RETURNED!!! Best machining videos EVER, man. I’m at work and had to click this.
And a lot of delicate hand work without machines.
The snakes were the point where I dropped my jaw.
OttoH my jaw is in pieces its dropped so much during this video! Lol
@@JonnyD3ath Oh no!
Same here. I was impressed by the hand bending, and then out of nowhere comes a second that is bent identical! What?! And then seeing them interwoven into that...whatever it is? #nextlevel
@@yungfleip for real fucking insane talent and fine motor skills.
wow a bent piece of rod how did he accomplish such a feat

I FUCKING KNOW, EVERYTHING, THE FOOTAGE THE CREATION THE TOOLS THE WORKSHOP IS FLAWLESS, ITS LIKE HE MADE A PACT WITH THE DEVIL
Hi Chris, I have just discovered your channel and instantly subscribed! I am a recently retired machinist having worked in a variety of machining environments. I have worked with master machinists and instrument makers and recognize perfection when I see it. I will sum up with one word "astounding".
I look forward to many hours of you videos.
The "This Old Tony" production infection is strong with this one.
Honestly I think Tony has kidnapped Chris and is forcing him to make trials bike parts.
YES....that would transcend any bike ever made! :D
This old tony could only dream of being able to do stuff like this

If Aliens come to Earth and need to see what humans are capable of creating in order to determine if we're worthy of their mercy, they should be shown Chris's projects.
Chris may not be human, he may well be one of those aliens sent to teach us about art and beauty and technology
Brad Ahrens i think Chris IS THE ALIEN!! he does some things that i didn’t think were possible
I watched this whole thing wondering what a crad press does.
It would've been better had you spelled"card" but you get a like anyway lol, I literally fell asleep last night trying watch and figure it out...I finished the video today, I still don't know what the purpose is. I assume to flatten over time, you already had 10 like I'm assuming someone maybe Chris will answer👍
I need to edit/spell check mine too lol

That is one of the most beautiful projects I've ever seen. Astounding craftsmanship! Utterly captivating video!
OMG So happy you're back, have been wondering where you disappeared. Can't wait for the continuation of the Antikythera project.
Chris, I've been holding my breath for months waiting for the next Antikythera video, so I clicked on the video as soon as I could. And boy am I ever glad I did! I am in awe of your craftsmanship, attention to detail, and obvious love and passion you have for everything you create. You are by far the best creator on the internet! Hats off and a deep bow, Chris. This is unbelievable. And the video editing too. Respect.
