  • In this comprehensive guide to aquarium plant fertilization, we dive deep into the world of aquascaping and the critical role that fertilizers play in maintaining a thriving planted tank. Whether you're a beginner or an experienced aquarist, understanding the nuances of plant nutrition is essential.
    We start by discussing the two primary fertilization methods: lean and rich. Lean fertilization involves providing just enough nutrients to sustain plant growth without promoting excessive growth or algae. Rich fertilization, on the other hand, encourages lush plant growth but requires more maintenance.
    We explore the various macro and trace elements essential for plant health, including nitrates, phosphates, potassium, and iron. Learn how these nutrients impact plant growth and coloration and how to maintain the right balance in your aquarium.
    Discover the signs of nutrient deficiencies in plants and how to address them effectively. We also touch on the importance of the Estimative Index fertilization method and its role in providing a stable nutrient supply for aquatic plants.
    Throughout the video, we emphasize the significance of regular water changes and careful observation to maintain a healthy and beautiful planted aquarium. Join us on this journey into the fascinating world of aquarium plant fertilization and achieve remarkable results in your aquascaping endeavors.

    I have YT account(s) for 10+ years and this is my very first comment: The amount and the quality of the content is miles ahead of the best videos I've seen, the level of understanding the law of nature and its evolvement is purely remarkable, all driven by passion, dedication and experience. Needless to say this lecture is super-motivating and inspiring, it's also a highlighted path in further research. A massive thank you for the Green Aqua team for the continuous knowledge sharing, and thank you Balázs for the charismatic approach of narration, it's full of excitement and truly unique. Keep on aquascaping :)

    I kept having problems with BBA, kept all my nutrients perfectly levelled with auto dosing. Tried tons of nuanced differences in my dosing amounts (was mixing my own macros and micros etc.) And never got it to go away even with dosing a ton of gluteraldehyde (excel) and blasting the tank with h2o2 occasionally. Turns out my co2 system wasn't working properly and it was fluctuating constanyly.. 2 years of trying to get rid of it, it was faulty equipment. Moral of the story i 100% agree with balazs, keep it simple and stop overcomplicating things. I have an engineering degree in biochemistry and work in wastewater, and my aquarium beat my ass. Really good video green aqua!!

    Very nice and comprehensive Tutorial / Guide and you're totally right, it is a complicated topic and you surely can tackle that from various different angles. One addition, though: Manganese isn't a micro, it's a macro Nutrient regarding its levels in the water and in a planted tank in general. Levels of 3-5mg/l are fairly common even in non-aquascapes and therefor way higher then the highest micro nutrient, which is correctly iron.

    • @GreenAquaShop
      @GreenAquaShop  4 роки тому

      I'm not gonna go into this now Toby. :) But Mn is always added together with the Micro elements - even in the EI, in very small quantities. :) The presence in some waters it another thing.

    Nice tutorial. Before shifting to Seachem product line (N, P, K, IRON, TRACE, EXCEL), I had used so called "ONE PRESS" fert for two years. It worked in low tech tank (dim light without CO2) but not in high tech tank (Strong light with lots CO2). Now I just follow the dosing chart provided by Seachem with some adjustments, and the result comes very well. I think the challenge of fertilizing without algae boom is to find the harmony or balance between light, CO2 and temperature, especially if you live in tropic area like me.

    • @GreenAquaShop

      Yes, you clearly know what you're doing, that is very good to read! One press fert is a good expression, I will use it. ;) Cheers.

  • @omfon
    @omfon 4 роки тому +1

    Finally, thank you!
    First, it is very brave of you to go into fertilization topic as you know how it is these days on social media everybody knows everything better than others :D
    But, seriously it is unbelievable what is going on. One group using lean is basically saying that is the only right way all others are stupid. Then second group using rich fertilization is saying the same. Then, the third using salts making their own fertilizers saying people using branded ferts are stupid. As, I already said very brave of you.
    I am using on one tank rich fertilization, my version of EI with very low nitrates dosing as my tap water is quite high in nitrates. Tank is doing great, no algae and very nice plants. On other tank with different needs I am using all in one fertilizer but lean fertilization and adding some potassium and phosphate from time to time if it is needed. It was always amusing for me watching people saying only one way is right way.
    Also it is very good you explained disadvantages of lean fertilization over the time and need for adding some additional nutrients from time to time as that is what I experienced, usually phosphates and potassium and iron are needed at least from my experience.
    Each aquarium is different, nobody has same plants and same tap water so you need to learn how your aquarium is breathing and act accordingly.
    And in the end if it works for your aquarium it is right way doesn't matter what everybody else is saying.

    • @GreenAquaShop

      Yepp, you sure know what you're doing and you are right in the fact that there's no one true solution, and there's always a big fight between believers. It will take 'blood, sweat, and tears' to surpass the educational value of this vlog. I even would not be able to put a price tag on this one.
    That is so very true that there is absolutely no ‘one size fits all’ solution. Why? Because every tank has its own ecosystem, which is very complex. (Yes, I do have Multiple Tank Syndrome for 20 plus years and even bare bottom breeding tanks differ from each other.)
    However, as you had mentioned that one should look for ferts whose manufacturer has broad testing means at their disposal, is not easy. For an average customer entering a LFS that is a huge hurdle. Most manufacturers are extremely secretive, and (unfortunately) many people selling them does not have the faintest idea, they are simply profit-oriented.
    I am particularly happy that you touched the subject of NPT. All too many self-proclaimed ‘experts’ throw their advice onto the Internet as if they were Diana Walstadt. Nope, they are not. They do not have the proper knowledge, above all, they are most often not familiar with the basics. So, please fellow Green Aqua followers, take the words of Balázs to your heart.
    In the end, let me add one important thought. Patience is the greatest virtue of any aquarist. Let your plants do the talking: what they need and/or what is too much for them. Plants talk slowly and silently. But if you have the patience and resilience, you could have as much a beautiful tank as Green Aqua has.

    Dirted tanks work. It is probably the best method to recommend for beginners. Once they get used to it they will graduate to more demanding tanks. I myself am trying a high tech method now after 10+ years of dirted tanks. People like you who discourage dirted low tech tanks probably are contributing a lot to people getting intimidated by the hobby. We need a lot more people in this hobby.

    Great video. As someone fresh back into aquariums and newer to aquascaping, information and PATIENCE is key.
    I bought master test kits, not to just test the water, but to make sure I could recognize the changes as the readings changed. Now the kits sit until I start another tank. (Uh oh)
    A fertiliser schedule is key. I found that under-dosing on a daily or semi-daily basis was of great benefit, because my tanks (betta and threadfin rainbows) run at 26.3 degrees celsius and the temperature didn't mesh well with skipping days with ferts.
    I asked the great Balázs about moss and even that led me to knowledge. Higher temps meant deeper greens in my moss. I originally thought it was a phosphate deficiency, but there were no other signs.
    I use excel everyday - well under dosed - to keep algae away which increases supply for my plant uptake. I don't actually think the carbon from excel boosts growth in my tanks, but the algae prevention means more nutrients for them.
    It is all fascinating, and the only way to understand is to do it and check in with your findings!

    • @GreenAquaShop
      @GreenAquaShop  4 роки тому

      Thanks for sharing your experience with us, I also think that mosses will get darker in warm water, we see that with the Betta tank too. Cheers.

    I know I'm 2 years late, but this is still one of the best overviews of fertilization. It may be too much for absolute beginners, but honestly I think even most relative beginners or intermediate levels would deeply benefit from this video.
    The only thing made me scratch my head a bit is the perpetuation of the idea that iron helps with reds, when all of the quality evidence shows that only iron deficiencies play any role in not obtaining reds. Extra iron doesn't increase red, especially as red pigmentations like anthocyanins, betacyanins, xanthins, etc have no Fe in them.
    Iron is of course vital to the process of synthesizing pigments, but typically green pigments actually have a stronger need for iron than others. My understanding is that the idea of iron increasing reds originally came from iron deficiencies in older fertilization systems that resulted in reduced plant health in general. Well, that and geology/textiles, where iron is the main source of red colorations, but we now know that's a false equivalence.
    Otherwise, excellent information and I'd say, still only intermediate water, not deep

    Hallo, best Video for beginners I have ever seen.I am in this beautiful hobby for more than 40 years.The first 10 years I had not much success because of less experience.But since the late 80s with upcoming of better light ( HQL back then ) and CO2-systems it became very better.Yes, you're right when saying always to observe the tank.I am still in love with dutch - style tanks, maybe it's because I grew up with that,but I am always fascinated by looking into a Amano - style tank.

      @@GreenAquaShop Hello again.Please let me ask one question : I'm very satisfied with my tank. All my plants doing fine, even HCC and
      Ludwigia Rubin for example.N is ~ 20, P~ 1, Potassium ~15, Magnesium ~15, FE ~ 0,15 , CO2 ~ 30. Light : LED, ~ 45 Lumen/ L.
      But the wonderful plant Pogostemon Helferi always starts to suffer after some weeks doing fine.Looking pale,some leafs melting.
      What is the need of this plant?Have you experience , did you keep her in good condition?
      I've been searching for this question for a long while,but till today never found an satisfying answer.
      If you can help me, please let me know.
      Thank you.

    I’m new to Aquascaping (about 9 months or so) and it’s been up and down ride for me. One thing I realized is that; as you mentioned in the video, looking at your tank is the best way to know if all good or something’s wrong. I setup a tank with aquasoil and sand as my first tank. Plants were growing beautifully, things seemed okay. Dosing lightly here and there with ferts and it was good. Few months pass and I notice my reds aren’t as vibrant as they were so I researched and figured it out. Then I proceeded to setup 2 more tanks and similarly I noticed either a deficiency or something and would research for hours or days at some points and I tried so many different things until I figured it out. Many people get discouraged, as I did 2 years ago when I bought my first aquatic plants (they died and I gave up on live plants till 9months ago). What I did differently this time was that I watched the plants closer and as soon as I noticed different leaves or weird new growth or whatever it was, I would research till I figured it out. I’m still learning as I go but my tanks are growing beautifully now! Didn’t loose any plants since I started and have actually done so many trimmings that I was able to fully plants 3 other tanks and all are thriving. Recently I ran into another issue with algae in my co2 tank and very bad growth in another non-co2 tank and I messed with times, settings, ferts and did weeks of work and I finally got them balanced and on the right track again and realized in the end what I did wrong. It’s a big process for sure! Lots of work. The key for me was to enjoy it and don’t stress it. The results of all that hard work pays off and I sit and stare at my tanks any chance I get. I love it and I love content like this for making it easier to understand things. Thanks
